The Chequers Inn reviews Feedback Ivan Tilman £20–30 Our visit the afternoon of Friday 3rd May this year. From setting foot inside The Mill Inn, we were welcomed with an immediate genuine and comfortable greeting. We were served drinks , whilst awaiting our main course. On tasting I knew I had made the right choice, on sampling both my wife's meal and our children's We had all made the right choice. My inlaws were also bowled over on quality and flavours. Clearly cooked with passion to create perfection. An absolutely amazing experience making my father in law's birthday extra special. World class ...outstanding. Person behind the bar was rude, no customer service, didn’t make you feel welcome. Food was not good either, boiled potatoes with eyes in!! Oily gravy. When you pop out for dinner you expect the food to be as good as or better than you make at home.

Old style pub with true home cooking including homemade chips! Super value, you'd struggle to spend more than £10 on a main meal. Turned up with a party of 10 for Saturday lunch without booking and it was no problem at all and the lovely food came very promptly. Thoroughly recommended.

While in the area on holiday, we ate here last Thursday, taking advantage of the Seniors Lunch, which @ £7 for 2 courses (main and dessert) is remarkable value. We both had chicken, sauté potatoes and vegetables; the chicken was extremely tender and tasty. For dessert my wife had Black Forest gateau and I had a rum and raisin tart; both were delicious. Portions were reasonable and certainly not reduced to reflect the bargain price. We also shared a plate of cheese (4 types) and biscuits and this was very generous, given the price of £4.50. Wine and coffee are charged at normal pub prices, which is fair enough, given the modest food prices. The pub was busy and had a cosy atmosphere; all the staff were very pleasant. So a very enjoyable lunch occasion!

I recently visited this pub with family for an evening meal. It is a traditional country pub with similar furnishings. Our meals didn't take long to appear and were very tasty with ample portions. The menu caters for traditional pub grub with vegetarian options and a specials board. Staff are friendly. There is a car park. We would definitely return.

As group of 5 we went for lunch on a Saturday. The Inn itself is dated but clean. The women on the bar was quite gruff including making a bit of a fuss that we didn't want to pay all together; card payments seemed a bit of a trial too! A wide selection of food was available and good prices; all mains were under £10. When the food arrived it was clear it was freshly made including homemade chips which was nice. In summary good value and reasonable quality but the attitude towards customers needs a fair bit of work.

Initial reception could have been better left waiting, and then not the best welcome from the first member of staff who spoke to us, there was no engagement of conversation and we didn't feel valued as a customers. We were served very quickly and we agree that the food was very good. the waitresses who served us were very pleasant and said all the right things, which made the experience for our first visit to the Inn better. The food was good value for the money. Despite our initial concerns we would make a return visit.

Just had a group meeting in the restaurant. Chips Scampi and sandwiches where served. Disgusting. Chips and scampi tasted like old oil, sandwiches made with paste, I went home hungry and will never return. These people do not have any idea of catering. Forget the notion of home made food that other reviewers promote. Just plain bad. They need to employ a chef, not some ametuer cook from a local village. Really annoyed.

My partner and I visited with our Labrador on a Friday evening. We were all made very welcome in the bar, which is a traditional style pub. There was an extensive selection of homemade meals, all extremely reasonably priced at ~£7.50! Nothing fancy, just really good grub, in a relaxed pub setting, at great prices. I’m struggling to think of many other pubs that remain in this traditional sense - most have either closed or become more gastro-orientated. There’s also a lovely quaint garden at the back and a large private car park.

I had had a recommendation by a local resident. The specials board was good and we has Rabbit casserole and chicken casserole £7.50 each. It service was very fast (5-10 minutes). My rabbit casserole had very little rabbit but was otherwise tasty. However the Mincemeat, banana and almond tart was scrumptious, £3.60 each.Service was quiet and efficient, fast service as we did not want to take a long leisurely meal.Total bill just over £25 - very generous for 2x two courses plus 2 portions of seasonal veg, plus two J2O's.Pleasant enough decor, but rather tired. We would be very happy to eat there again if we were passing through and personally would have a different main course but would hope the desert was available again.

The menu was varied and suited all tastes, and their Thursday special of 2 courses for less than £6 was amazing. I had steak and kidney pie (all home-made with local sourced ingredients) with vegetables and I can honestly say it was the best I have ever tasted. The portion was so large that I had to change my second course selection from treacle tart to ice-cream! The local beer was excellent and complimented the food, so in all, a superb lunch with good friends and in a real British pub. Certainly a Pub that the owners can be proud of. The fish was over cooked as well. My husband had steak and ale pie with chips and he said it was ok.I would say to anyone it is a nice country pub with a warm welcome but I think the food could be a bit hit and miss, would go back but only for a drink. Very sorry to say our meal was mediocre, which is a shame as I would love to support this community local pub. I felt the menu choices were fairly limited, the only main special was the pie - roast pork and leek, which I thought an odd combo for a pie. I had the chicken burger - the bread was that floppy cheap sort of roll that comes ready cut, the burger was just OK, nothing special. The service was very good however, no complaints there. Maybe we just hit a bad night.

Went in for some food on a very wet night. Wife makes some comment about bad weather to landlord whose reply is that we could do with more bad weather to discourage the boat people from crossing the channel. She orders vegetable lasagne from his menu . When he brings it says he doesn't know how she could eat it as it is bordering on the disgusting. When I ask for a cup of tea to go with her meal he says he does not serve tea as the English have tearooms to cater for that. Strange chap. Food was very good but he did not cook it ?. I have noticed other comments about the rude landlord on here. True to form?
