Midgleys in Leeds

Use to call in at dinner time before doing the school bus run home. Came in yesterday Monday 7th October. Ordered fish and chips. the fish was undercooked and now off work with food poisoning. Will not be returning

Delicious food, generous portions, really reasonable price, and lovely staff. Will be coming back again!

Clean shop with tender fish, chicken and chips

The fish and chips never disappoint. Normally a reasonable turnaround to get in and out. They won't take telephone orders for collection, which is annoying, as they have a phone and do answer it. The fryer is on the ball and is clearly attentive to what customers are ordering. But some of the counter staff don't listen to the orders in detail. And are quite frankly, unfriendly and rude. It is a busy shop, I am unsure whether they just don't like working there or are underpaid. Good fish and chips, shame about some of the staff.

Decent fish and chips, does the job but nothing to rave too much about

My partner had a steak and onion pie from here last night and has been violently throwing up from 3am till 6am. It’s also caused it to come out the other end so it has clearly given him food poisoning. I know it happens but was the pie not cooked? Was it left out for too long or out of date ?! I’ve never seen him this poorly in my life!!

Nice fish and chips but sudden price increase on every item on menu! £9 for fish and chips is steep considering the size of the portion is not classed as ‘large’ and that’s without any sides included.

I was over charged for my fish and chips this has happened once to many times now it’s put me off going there again they are dishonest I don’t understand there game plan doing this I guess it’s there way of saving there pennies I won’t be returning sad but true

Do not eat food from Michelle fish shop no good chips like wood fish like cardboard no good I will be calling traning standards with this ok.

Love the place won't go anywhere else ,Staff are always lovely and fast and the fish and chips are the best I've tasted .

Were staying a couple of miles away and `oop north` for a gig, wanting proper food and Midgeley`s, Bramley did not disappoint in any way. I`d say the fish was outstanding - really healthy as we chose the lightly-battered version and there were thick flakes of white fish throughout . The mushy peas seemed to be unsalty / devoid of colouring agents, too. To get perfection, I think they`d need to exclude the crispy bits of chips - as the proper chips were delicious and , no doubt, really nutricious. All in all a stupendous meal. :) :)

The fish is very small. Since the increase in energy costs and supply price increases they have upped the prices and reduced the fish fillet size. Nice fish I have to say but poor value.

Wow! Thanks for the tip! Gluten free fish and chips were wonderful, with a light crispy batter, and a thick fillet of really fresh tasting haddock. Worth travelling for! (Specially if you are Celiac), but their regular fish and chips looked wonderful too.

Been a customer here for over 15 years and usually the fish and chips are excellent. Sadly tonight's were dreadful. The fish was truly awful we were very disappointed it didn't seem to be fresh - it was chewy and dry - yuk!

Just got fish and chips, although the fish was lovely the chips had on previous occassions have not bee cooked long enough and are white, there is no colour to them at all, very dissappointed especialy the price off them today.

Always good fish & chips on a Friday lunch time. Service is friendly and efficient. The lunch time special is always good & great value too!!

I have asked for 2x Lunchtime Special 1 and one Large Fish and Chips. Staff have charged me for Regular Fish and Chips where Its more expensive and I have to buy separate Mushy peas. As soon as I paid and looked at the Receipt found out I have been charged different than what I asked for. Lunchtime Special 1 is £5.95 with Mushy Pease but charged £8.50 for Regular Fish and Chips and then made me pay separate £1.40 for Mushy peas. Cost me extra and when I asked just 30sec after paying another customer asked for Lunchtime Special 1 offer and they have served him. They said that's what I have asked for and giving me attitude and rudeness about we are not gonna waste this fish now what I have just started for you. Staff is not friendly at all and overcharging customers and trying to make sale.

Been here many times and it's a great fish & chip shop when they get it right. The odd occasion when they're really busy they tend to rush the chips, we'd rather wait than have underdone chips. Portion size is massive and taste perfect when they're not rushed. I'd recommend ordering the bigger fish. Nothing wrong with the regular size though, seen way smaller portions elsewhere. Batter is golden brown and crispy. Mushy peas, 10 on 10.

3 times now I've been in the afternoon tried their chips ,3 times they went in the bin, just soaked in grease, fish wasn't much wider than a fish finger ,never will I go again .

Busy but quick service good food as always

Always nice here and find it easier by doing click and collect, esp on big complexity orders. Unfortunately the only thing they don't do are scallops but they do do a Minted Pea & Potato Fritter, which is pea and potatoes mashed up with mint sauce and fried. It was lovely, reminded me of pie and peas with mint sauce. Only issue here, which is not fault to the business is parking 🅿️ outside

Called into bramley shop late evening got fish and chips . Chips over cooked plus half of the them was too hard to eat . Fish was very dry. Will not go there again

We asked if they could do gluten free, and we heard the woman behind the counter say "urgh I can't be doing with them". My niece is severely allergic, she's not just being fussy, so it was pretty upsetting to hear her say that ☹️ definitely wouldn't go again.

They do use a third party provider if you order on line who will take the money out of your account before the order is confirmed by the shop. You will get the money back the next day but your order will not have gone through and you will need to pay (again) in the shop until the next day .

Not been having fish and chips lately due partly to them not being up to standard at my local F/C shop. Kirkstall but I thought to hell with price increases and am going to try Midgley's F/C..... Flipping BRILLIANT!!! Had a medium fish and chips and at £6.50 they were well worth it even taking on board the price increase. Thanks to the staff also for their help. As ARNIE would say.... I WILL BE BACK!!!!

I used to really enjoy the fish and chips here, having defected to murgatroyds a few years ago. I tried them on a whim one evening so placed an order online to collect from the shop. My order was ready on arrival. The fish and chips however were a disappointment, the batter was flat, thick and still a bit undercooked on the inside. The fish size was decent so not all bad news. The chips were also a bit undercooked for my liking. Sorry to say I won't be back again in a hurry ☹️

It was alright. The chips were a bit wooden and had bad bit in a few. The fish was ok, a bit small. I'll keep searching for the perfect chippy.

Pre-order and collection very simple and convenient. Always choose Midgleys for our coeliac family member, one of the few take away foods we can enjoy as a family

This is not a restaurant review but for takewaway. No one queueing in the shop when I called in on Saturday lunchtime around 11.45am. The fish and chips I ordered were put in a box for me and they must have been sitting around for a while. They weren't very hot at all. The chips were soggy and although the fish was nice the batter wasn't cripsy at all. Very poor standard this time indeed. Nothing like what I normally get from there. Very disappointing and won't be getting any more fish and chips from this place.

Very disappointed with the fish on the last two visits, certainly not cod or haddock! May have to find another fish shop I'm afraid! 😔

Hi I have just called at this fish and chip shop today, I had fish & chips and a breadcake they were absolutely brilliant. The fish tasted lovely and was light, flakey and cooked wonderfully as were the chips. The staff were polite and friendly too, the shop was clean and I will definitely call again when im in the area. Keep it up 👍👏👏. John

Bought 2 chip bottles n got home to disgusting chips. Some was well done and some under done. Didn't eat them threw them out to see if the wildlife will eat them.

Fish watery tasteless size of 2 fishfingers at best chips old and burnt never going there again as not the first time its been bad

So disappointed.. i have bought from here twice during the day.. the food was fresh with a big decent sized crispy fish. Today a Friday night the food was rubbish.. soggy fish, barely any batter, smaller than usual, greasy chips. Will not give my money to this place again and will spread the word to my family and social media not to buy from this shop

Good customer service looked nice and clean but the food wasn’t great I threw the fish in the bin it tasted really funny put me off

The food is delicious, the spam fritters are melt in the mouth, chips are cooked to perfection. The fish is moist and tasty and the battered sausages are perfect. The customer service is great, the prices reasonable and click and collect has always been hitch free

One of the best chip shops in North Leeds, and that's some high praise given the competition locally. Always spotlessly clean, friendly staff, reasonable prices and usually a few people in the queue (always a good sign...).

Best for miles.... avoid 3pm, school nearby, drivers are crazy. But 100% food.

Very friendly staff, good quality food, portions too large if anything but not to complain about! Glad the polystyrene boxes have been replaced with cardboard and the plastic bags replaced with paper bags - so what if you have to pay a few pence for a bag if it doesn't end up in landfill or the ocean choking creatures to death.

Great food BUT whats with the tiny box containers. If i go for fish n chips thats what i want a proper chippy and not a tiny box with five chips in. Sort it out guys wont be using anymore.

Cracking chippy, good sized flaky fish , huge portion of chips . friendly staff. EDIT - 12 months after posting the above review . Been a user of this shop for over 10 years they have changed now using boxes that don't keep the food warm and portion sizes are tiny in comparison to what they were. Fish are smaller with thicker batter and the chip portion is about 50% smaller! Not good.

Been a loyal customer of Midgleys for over 10 years but tonight will be my last visit! They now use boxes and as a result the portion sizes are much smaller than they previously were (VFM was one of the reasons we stuck with them) The new boxes in no way keep the products warm and our meal was tepid by the time I got home with it. I'd also like to know who to send the bill for removing the box coating off my leather car seats to. It would seem the owners are putting profit in front of customer service now .Personally I can't see it taking long before their business suffers as a result of this , I will definitely be taking my custom elsewhere.

What a joke, now using boxes and portion is half what it used to be and same price. Said they are going green but how can that be when you wrap the boxes in paper, just being tight now with their portions and will lose loyal customers if these boxes are the future for midgley’s

Midgley's was high art fish chips. The best you could get. Walked in this evening to an empty shop, with four girls behind the counter with nothing to do as opposed to the normal sight of people queuing out the door. Spotted the boxes & immediately ordered two fish & chips instead of the normal two fish & one chips as the gig was immediately up on "portion control". Was proved right as the portion sizes were much reduced. Nailed for a chargeable paper bag also. Getting the food home, the fish was now covered in a thick batter - more cutting corners? As opposed to the glorious fat fillets poached deliciously in a light batter, this fillet was smaller, bulked out with batter that was too thick, with the slimmer ends of the fish overcooked. Someone's trying to be really clever pushing the margins here. This will work for a period. But Bretts & Bryans (or whatever it's called now) are down the road. Judging by the empty shop I suggest a rethink on giving less & expecting seasoned chippers to keep trotting by.

I love midgleys and we drive down from Cookridge to go there. New boxes mean portions of chips halved and the fish was broken to fit in it and then squashed down by the staff. The food was nice as usual and I can understand the business trying to go green but there is a problem. The boxes are coated with a thin plastic coating and they are not recyclable when they have food on them!! So instead of the paper where you can recycle some of it, the whole box needs to go in the black bin. Going green or a ploy to charge you the same for less? Half a portion of chips anyone?

I know 5 stars is high but this is a really decent chippy, in my top 3 in leeds.
