Mick's Fish & Chips in Braintree

Tried for the first time , chips were cooked perfectly, fish was amazing! Good portion size, Would definitely use again.

To be fair, this is the first time we have been disappointed with our meal. Whatever else a chippy sells, the chips have to be first class and on this occasion they were not. How do they manage that? Just that simple fact will have me shop at the next nearest chippy in the future. Sorry.

Within our area there are a few fryers of fish and chips but only two would I place in the extremely good category and Micks comes into that small group. On a Friday the queue reaches out into the road which must demonstrate how good they are at their trade. I popped in on a Monday and I was the third customer wating. Unlike Fridays, today they fried to order. Two wonderful light battered cod fillets with an enormous amount of crispy chips. Totally delicious. Micks does the usual fish and chips but also diverges to other meals. Too many to write about here just check out their menu.

Its going to the dogs sadly. The staff seem barely able. I ordered and then stood there while customers came and went over and over. I could see the piece of cod I’d ordered sitting in the cabinet, but they just weren’t going to serve me. I have a heart condition and a lung tumour. I struggle with situations that cause stress. I got to the point where I was just going to give up and go home and then they served me. They waited until the shop only had one person left waiting other than me, and he was the last person who had an order taken after all the rest. Basically kept me waiting until the game tired. Frankly I’d expect better, but its not the first time. Use this place if you want. I’m not going back. Life, sadly, is too short.

Tried Micks tonight for the first time and the fish and chips were fab! Fresh tasty chips and fresh tasty fish. We will definitely be coming back soon.

Previously given a largely positive review but I have to say the last few orders from here have been pretty poor. Specifically the most recent visit the chips were soft, squidgy, greasy and flavourless. Based on this o personally won’t be visiting for a while.

Exceptional fish and chips with friendly staff who seem to cope well with busy times (Fridays and Saturdays) All cooked fresh to order although you can now pre order Your fish to avoid waiting at all with a quick phone call. Happy to help with any special requirements too.

Fish and chips are great here the food is fresh the fish is to die for thier is little fat in the fish a large chips feeds 3 adults with the fish curry sauce gravy always hot would recommend to anyone body

I didn't mind the long wait and the food was great as always. But the customer service was horrendous and embarrassed me in front of other customers. My order was miss heard twice when payment I questioned she understood the order the order. She made this look like my fault (loudly). On receiving my food I questioned the order again to make sure and this time the order was wrong on two items!! I questioned this again and the shop were unwilling to correct the mistake. I ended up paying more for less. Very disappointed!

Family of 5 ordered 2 regular portions and it was like we were on rations. Anywhere else we have plenty left over. Portion was more like two smalls. Chips are nice though. This photo is one of the portions we had.

Absolutely a big NO NO this fish n chips cook their Saveloys in water thats disgusting, vile texture, skin peels off and bitty inside. There cooked by frying, makes them crispy & firm. Fryer didnt have a clue! AVOID!

Relatively regular visitors as it’s at the top of our estate. Food is usually pretty decent and the service is friendly. Agree with some of the other reviews that sometimes the portion sizes are smaller than other times.

Was good when first opened but now they have made the portions smaller I think. Foreign Girl on the phone who takes the orders is always bit grumpy too.

The best best & chips in Braintree, oysters being a close second. Very good value for money and very tasty food. Only down side is the service can be pretty slow

Always have haddock and chips - tried it 3 times now and very tasty. Good friendly service - only bad thing is the lack of parking at it is at a very busy cross roads.

Visited last Saturday in June when I collected an order for the family. Food was excellent - is the best fish and chip shop (in my view) in Braintree!! Staff friendly.

When they first opened this restaurant was very good however as time has moved on, I think they have got used to things and started slipping.Compared to other fish and chip shops in Braintree, I don’t believe their portion sizes of late are value for money.Don’t get me wrong, the food is good and the service seems good but compared to one’s in town, what you are paying for, especially when they advise ‘large’ portions of chips, certainly don’t appear large once unwrapped from the endless sheets of paper!Look at your portion sizes please or lose custom

We had been extremely busy this weekend and decided on a takeaway meal as a treat.Mick's large cod and large chips for £8.80 was a great price for a takeaway for 2 hungry people. The sign in the shop says they are now using new potatoes. The chips were hot, fresh and plentiful. The large cod was huge, plenty for two, nicely battered and tasty. Highly recommended, best chippy in Braintree.

Delicious each time we have had this. . Staff always pleasant. Highly recommand this place. Plenty of choices.

People seem to rave about this new(ish) place but I just find it OK. A few times my step children have bought chips home and I have had a few and they have been pretty good. Other times we have got fish and chips and I have been underwhelmed. There are usually loads of staff BUT this does not necessarily mean you get your food any quicker. Today there was only one person ahead of me but I still had to wait a good 10 minutes for food. What we had was only OK. Fish pretty good but the chips were really quite poor. Greasy and soggy. Not great value price wise either.

went in here post golden fry and was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of choice and quality of the food I was given..will be using again.

I asked if they had a pensioners deal , I went there to find out I can say yes they do. It was cooked fresh and it is good meal for a pensioner. Thank you.

1st ever visit, it was very busy (a good sign) about 15-20 people queuing, but no way of knowing who had ordered, who was waiting to order, nobody behind the counter even acknowledging I had walked in, waiting, how long the wait was it could do with some organisation.

I have been using this chip shop on a regular basis since it opened in the Spring. The scampi cod and just cooked food is very reasonable. However the faster food such as pies and the such, on the last three occasions have only been luke warm and I also had to micro wave them and the chips, which were not hot at all.

Only one visit so far but this new fish and chip shop is very good. Great cod and chips. The staff were very nice and after a second visit I may give it five stars.

Recently Opened In BRAINTREE, the food was outstanding and the shop has been there for a while now and has kept its standards up with quality of food and service. Reasonable priced for the quality and size off food.

Thus chip shop opened just a few minutes up the road to us, whichbis ideal as the other chippy we use is in the centre of town. Food is good staff are friendly

Went in on Monday night there was two ladies behind the counter the younger of the two ask what I wanted I proceeded to say sausage in batter well the girl then kept saying batta batta just to let you know I have a strong cockney accent. She saw my face but still proceeded to mimic me to the other lady. The chips were tasteless the sausage in batter was more batter than sausage the pie lucky I have glasses because I found it hard to see the meat very dry. Hence I will not be going back didn’t realise that I would get heckled for my accent in fish shop

I decided to try Mick's shop as in my opinion there is not a good fish & chip shop in the Braintree area. It was busy but I.was happy to wait as I like my fish freshly cooked. They had sold out of the large Halibut so I excepted the extra large size. This was very much average fish although the batter was nice and the chips quite nice. I was expecting something better but I will not judge on only one visit and will be back to try them again in the near future. I did try many times to telephone the shop to order my food to save waiting but the telephone was always engaged but on arrival it seemed to have been turned off. Not ideal !!

We live locally and used to have to drive to find a decent chippy, now there is a great one on our doorstep! Brill!

I’ll keep this review simple! This is just what Braintree needs, a new high quality fish and chip shop. The food is first rate, the service excellent and if you don’t fancy takeaway they have a small 20ish cover seating area that is clean,tidy and welcoming. Try Mick’s you won’t be disappointed.

We usually use a different fish and chip shop in Braintree but thought we would give Micks a try. Everything was cooked nicely cod and chips but unfortunately they didn't have a full selection of pies. No steak and kidney or minced beef and onion. Staff were very friendly. Would probably not go back it's a bit further away than our usual shop and not any better.

We had a big order for a family gathering, and we all agreed that we've found our new regular fish and chip shop! Great value for money, the food stayed warm all the way home, and all the food tasted fresh!

We had cod and chips for three people. The batter was not properly cooked and was very doughy in places. I thought oil tasted odd.... sorry! Great and friendly staff, quick turn around. I will try again in the future.

Best fish and chips in Braintree.

Braintree finally had a great chippy! OK, so the parking may not be the greatest but this is definitely the best fish and chips you can buy locally.

Think this must be the best in braintree tasty chips and large piece chips at a fair price ..... try it

The amount of near onhead on collisions I’ve see from people parking in disrespectful places is unbeleivebale, and just tonight, someone parking the wrong side of the road right at the traffic lights, just to get his fish and chips. People park where the hell they want, even across people’s drive. I live down the road but have to drive this way every day, and it is a bloody nightmare, sorry Mick, but you’re not a favourite with the neighbours!

Newly opened, friendly staff, great service, decent portion sizes and best of all great fish and chips!

We had found the perfect fish and chips in Braintree but a short drive away. A new restaurant opened a few weeks ago, just a block away. It was worth a try but our old place would be difficult to beat. Mick's didn't beat it but came in a 'photo finish'. Nice chips with great light fish in crispy batter, perfect. Looked a nice restaurant seating area and we may try that soon. Friendly staff and a nice clean, new shop.
