As a dog lover I was concerned to hear that a local family’s small dog was attacked and injured in the cafe at Messums West by the owner’s dog, and the lack of responsibility shown by the owner in their comments here is disappointing. A shame when regular customers are treated this way. I’ve visited Messums West and had a good time, but definitely less inclined to go back now.

We are locals who have enjoyed many regular visits to Messums West, until an incident last weekend. On Sunday we went to the cafe with our small dog and out of the blue she was viciously attacked by the owner’s dog who was wandering around not on a lead. The staff in there took immediate action as she screamed, and helped pull the dog off. Our poor dog had been bitten badly on her face and was bleeding, thankfully it was not worse. The owner, who was on the premises was told of the incident, he then made a brief appearance in the cafe and made a general apology but by not coming directly up to us, it was clear he wanted to minimise the incident. To add insult to injury, we were still charged for the coffees. We shan’t be going back anytime soon and if you’re thinking of going there and you have a small dog, please be aware.

Stunningly beautiful building with interesting exhibitions. The staff are lovely and friendly. A good way to spend a few hours whether it's enjoying the sculptures outside on a sunny day, or the artwork in the galley and tithe barn when it's cold and rainy. Just bare in mind it's a cashless venue. Caught me out once and was unable to use the cafe.

Just... Wow. The barn is astonishing. Superb 1/3 of an acre interior in a c.13th century space, well-used to display: The art: almost as good. Remarkable sculptures by Lawrence Edwards had us puzzled and entertained, and oh to have c.£12k spare to buy a marble facsimile of a traffic cone. Great stuff.

We had a fabulous lunch at Messums. The staff were lovely; relaxed but highly professional and helpful. The food was classy and truly delicious. When we left I passed a customer outside who was raving about one of the dishes. I joined in. The marks I gave for the food are: Roast pepper and tomato soup with cheese toastie 10/10. The soup was far from the pureed vegetable sludge you often get. It was a smooth rich and zingy veloute, so delicious I am salivating as I write. The cheese toastie made with smoked cheese was, literally, the best toasted cheese sandwich we have both ever had. Vegetable pithivier 9/10. The pastry was perfect, the sauce was was luscious. The filling was great but not quite mind blowing. Roasted plaice with pickled mussels, new potatoes and samphire. 9/10. Really perfectly cooked fish, browned on both sides, which is rare for plaice. The accompaniments were all lovely. I would have preferred less butter on the plate for a roasted piece of fish but that's just my personal preference; hence the 9. Dessert, deconstructed caramelised pineapple and passion fruit cheesecake with meringue. I would normally give a 2 for deconstructed anything...what's the point..and meringue with all the other sweet things should have made for an oversweet dish. However, I gave this a 10/10. Every mouthful was dreamy. The meringue was not too sweet and actually really tasty. I would travel some distance for food like this. We drove 32 miles and will do so again soon. Well done guys.

An exceptional meal at Messums Restaurant! Before I review, I will be completely honest and say that my son works in the front of house at The Mess Restaurant, but frankly that tends to make me more discerning, more critical and much harder to please! I also work in a very different part of the food industry and that also helps me to understand good food when I taste it! I took my elderly mother and my husband here yesterday for a roast dinner and it really was delicious. The offering was a traditional roast dinner of 42-day aged rib eye beef on the menu, along with a whole host of other options on a Sunday, we all went for the roast beef option and were not only impressed by the cooking but thoroughly delighted with the wonderful choice of good quality produce which made for one of the tastiest roast dinners we had in years! Needless to say, the service was impeccable too :-) but truly, honestly the whole team should be a very proud of what they are all doing as they doing it so well!

We were passing by on a bike ride and popped in for lunch. Absolutely beautiful surroundings but we were very disappointed by the portion size and cost of the food. We ordered, as a main course, salmon quiche with a leaf salad, at £9. What we got was a small slice of quiche and a few green salad leaves. The quiche was delicious but with no accompaniments (such as new potatoes) it was not at all filling and completely overpriced.

Absolutely amazing food, popped in for a spot of lunch, brilliant location too. Update February 2020: I visited this place again for lunch on Saturday 22/02/2020 and had an unusual experience. We ordered for our food, paid for it and waited. Drinks came to our table about 10 mins after ordering, but the food was nowhere to be seen. The waiter then came back to us, after about 45 mins wait and said "I apologize for the delay but my colleague didn't put your order through to the kitchen so I will do you a favor and not charge you for half the meal." I pointed out to him that I had already paid for the meal at the start and he said he will speak to his manager about it. We had ordered the Thali plate and pork belly. When the food eventually came out the rice on the Thali plate seemed over cooked. Every thing else was okay. We finished eating and I approached the waiter on our wait out to see if he had spoken with his manager, to which his reply was "I am sorry for telling you that we would not charge you for half of the food, my manager told me off for it as I should have not said that to you." I told him it was fine and just walked out. Bless him. I just felt this could have been handled better, even if the manager had come out themselves to speak to us about it.

Reasons being: - it came out immediately after ordering so clearly pre prepared and q expensive considering. - staff were really not switched and on we consistently waited for menus/service and bill. There is a lot of improvement with service to make this experience far better across the board.

Messums offers a series of beautifully restored barns house with well-considered and curated artworks from a wide range of artists. It is situated in a glorious valley with sheep dotted around the countryside. The shop has a small range of justifiably-expensive ceramics and fabrics. The cafe is equally expensive and exquisite, but with a delicious but limited menu of vegetarian food. My only gripe is charging us an extra £2 for bread. Worth a visit.

Our first visit, food and service very good, the only negative for our lower stars was the owner/manager did not in anyway control a VERY rude and noisy table who were swearing throughout the evening, and we told the management about this and left quickly. I have no doubt this table spoilt it for others too, and sadly, we doubt we would return because it's down to the owner to control their business which we don't think they are capable of doing this.
