Excellent food, wonderful staff! It is a beautiful place to eat and has a lovely, well stocked shop too with provisions and gifts. I love it there, plus, it's dog friendly - dogs even have their own choice of food. Highly recommended!

I never usually leave reviews but felt compelled to write one after attending Mersea Barns. The food is very highly priced for the area - i'd say close to London prices - but the quality is just not good enough. I had a fish and chips, the chips were cold and incredibly salty, and the fish was really bad. My friend had the chicken caesar salad but there was no dressing on it, so it was essentially chicken and some leaves. We ordered some cake hoping it would make us feel better about the bad lunch, and whilst they looked amazing, they were completely dry with no flavour. Everything came to around £50 which I just find so overpriced for what it was. I will say however that the the waitresses were kind and approachable. It's such a shame about the food as it's such a lovely location and shop!

i visited a friend who was staying on Mersea Island, and she recommended this place. I'm so glad she did. What a lovely place, plenty of parking and a large play area for anybody with children. The staff were so friendly and really helpful. We needed a couple of changes to our order, and they were really happy to do so, and also offered alternative ideas too. Absolutely gorgeous food......and so many choices of CAKE !! :). I really look forward to visiting this place again. Thank you Mersea Barns x

Went as a group of nine, the lady in charge as we ordered the roast told us there was a "thin" bit of fat running through beef. This is to be expected but on arrival our dinner was absolutely inedible. The beef should NOT of been served especially at £22! I do not believe this was a Hereford cut of sirloin, it was just gristle and fat. As we were eating we then heard her tell customers the beef had been taken off the menu. The pork belly was burnt with no crackling. We had to ask for cauliflower cheese as it was stated on the menu the beef came with it. A tablespoon of gravy on each dinner, and all very cold.Service was poor, asked for high chair and ended up getting our own, nobody around when we wanted to send our dinners back or ask for extra gravy/drinks etc.We felt they knew the day was a disaster as nobody once asked how was everything... apparently the usual chef was off and the two currently on terrible, we overheard the lady tell other customers. The food was so dry and so dissapointing. Only 50% off the two dinners that couldn't be eaten, I suggested the full amount should be deducted as it was so poor yet she disagreed so we had no choice but to pay. They were clearly understaffed in the kitchen and should of shut rather than serve that day! We are all locals and will not return.

Good to return. Very pleased to get Tea, Coffee, lovely Shortbread and a Loo! Arrived @ 4.15pm and their nominal closing time is 4.00pm! Often wondered why do Tea Rooms close before 5.00pm? 3.00pm is time for the Englishman (& woman) to take their Tea. Anyway, delicious Shortbread and a fine Macchiato. Called in with a friend and had a great experience and in a lovely setting. The Barn is very spacious, immaculately clean and the staff were fantastic. They were very helpful, friendly, and accommodating. We both had the mushrooms on toast which were very tasty, the best I've ever had, as was the toffee apple cake which the waitress warmed through and she gave us some cream - it was all delicious. When we I was on my way home I realised I had left my phone in the loo. The place was closed but the staff were still there and they were just in the process of trying to locate me so that they could return it. I will definitely be making a special trip for lunch again.

Have eaten here before and really enjoyed it. Today may have been an off day. Food was ok, well cooked and decent portions but have eaten same things elsewhere and enjoyed them more. Shared a bowl of chips which came with a garlic mayo but the chips themselves had an almost garlic-like aftertaste. The most disappointing aspect was the service, Tea was served but we were left to go find some sugar ourselves. Mains were served - this time we had to go find cutlery for ourselves and there was no offer of ‘can I get you anything else’ I.e. cutlery, sauce, salt and pepper. I could understand if the items we had to find were missing from our table because we’d just walked in but it had been reserved online earlier in the day.

The service was dreadful. Wrong order delivered to my friend, not an apology in sight! Staff looked miserable and completely inattentive, we had to call someone to take our order even though the place was almost empty. They had savoury scones to go with soup but would not serve one on its own, I was told only enough are made to go with a soup order, so had to have a fruit one. Needless to say we won’t be going back!!

My family and I went for a drink at Mersea Barns this morning, and we’re really disappointed with the service. We waited 15 minutes for 2 teas, a coffee and a juice. My husbands coffee came and we then had to wait ages for the rest of the drinks. The cafe wasn’t even that busy. Frustratingly I could see the tray with the rest of our drinks waiting on the counter! The lady that served my husband was extremely blunt and rude and he observed her being the same to the gentleman in front of him in the queue. One of the cups was also dirty. It’s such a shame as this is a lovely spot and the shop is really nice and reasonably priced.

The worst experience I have ever had. Whilst I was there, there were 4 dogs in the conservatory whilst people were eating, One table had 3 small dogs with them and one of the dogs was actually sitting on one of the chairs, another one had its front paws on the table. So very hygienic, and nothing was said by staff when she brought their order to their table. Also I noticed a loose dog outside urinating on the furniture whilst its owners just looked. In Spain if your pet urinates outside against street furniture or trees they have to spray with water, so all dog walkers take a bottle of water out with them whilst walking their pets, perhaps you need to adopt this procedure !! I bought a cheese scone to take away, and it was stale, hard and tasteless. In all a very unpleasant visit. PLK

Had the worst roast dinner of my life today. The beef was so tough a dog would have struggled to eat it. I was there with my wife and baby and brother and his wife and son. We had three roasts and all were terrible! Me and my wife hardly touched our food. The service was slow but passable as it was busy. We went up to pay and I told them I wasn’t prepared to pay for the two roasts as we had hardly touched them! The lady at the desk said the owner wasn’t there and the chef said no one else had complained so we ended up having one free. Although we didn’t eat either.I didn’t want to cause a massive seen as I was with my family. Just wanted to give people the heads up. Spend your money else where. Thank you for the delicious Cream Tea Box we collected. It was a thank you from my house bound parents for all the care we are providing for them in getting provisions where could especially in the beginning where people had hoarded and they needed...

Just been for lunch here and had a really lovely time. The barn is spacious, light and airy. The food freshly cooked, well presented and tasty. I was served by Mandy who was very friendly and efficient. I would definitely go back

Stopped off for coffee, and went back for lunch. Nice place and pleasant staff. Food was good, but a little pricey. We will go back.

Treated the family to breakfast out and we were not disappointed, there was a good choice, and the food was lovely. Will definitely be returning.

I went to the Donkey and Buskins with my son and parents for lunch yesterday. Service was superb - very prompt during an obviously very busy afternoon. Our meals were beautiful as well, the fish pie was delicious (topped with crunchy capers, which was a nice unique touch) as were the pie of the day, and the lambs Liver and Bacon. All cooked and presented to a really high standard.

This fish & chip shop came highly recommended. So was disappointed on Saturday evening receiving totally tasteless halloumi in a wrap & dry chicken as another part of the order. We most likely won’t be returning which is a real shame

After a bit of shopping we were looking for somewhere for lunch and came across Poppy's. Very quaint little tea room set out very nice with 50s music playing in the background with lots of old 50s posters and pictures on the walls. We ordered coffees, my with having black and me a caramel latte which was extremely nice. We both ordered sandwiches,my wife having tuna mayo with red onion and me having a club sandwich of chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo. The sandwich was then lightly toasted. They were both very well presented and were very tasty. Would highly recommend this lovely little tea room!!

Another let down …. I’ve always had great food from here but the problem I have had in my last 2 attempts at getting food is crazy …. First a few weeks ago I queued up for 20 mins then when I got to the counter and asked for just 1 cheese sandwich was told 40 mins wait !!!! So I didn’t bother …. Now today after spending 6 hours decorating a beach hut I decided at midday to go and order some food… brilliant no queue only to be told that the cook / chef was going out for 15/20 mins !!!!! Turning around to see him put his coat on and leave … at lunch time REALLY .. we have sent literally dozens of customers your way from our beach hut rentals and all of them have said what a great little cafe we have left your menus in our huts for the customers to look at ect .. unfortunately we have again been let down and found myself driving to Tesco to get lunch …. To save us from any negative feedback we are removing the menus from the huts in case something similar happens to our customers…
