Was at Merchant Taylors' Hall, the seat of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors (one of London's twelve livery companies dating back to Medieval times), for the dinner marking the opening 400th anniversary celebrations of the founding of Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby. The food was excellent, well cooked, well-presented and very tasty. The service was also excellent. The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors has occupied the Hall's premises on Threadneedle Street since 1347 but the present Hall is not the first. The first Hall, built some time between 1347 and 1392, was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666, when only the walls and foundations were left. The building was restored and then again suffered major damage during the London Blitz in September 1940. Reconstruction was carried out and the restored Hall was opened in March 1959. Today the Hall is used for public events, such as the dinner we attended, through a dedicated catering company. It is remarkable how excellent the service was considering the number of the diners and, especially, as the Great Kitchen has been in continuous, albeit now updated, since 1425. But why is this review entitled 'At "Sixes and Sevens"'. That phrase, beloved by commentators when describing a football's sides poor defending, actually comes from two of London's livery companies - the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors and the Worshipful Company of Skinners. Both these Companies received their first royal charter in 1327 and this gave rise to a long standing squabble between them as to which Company should be ranked sixth and which should be ranked seventh in the rankings of the City of London's livery companies. The argument came to a head in the Lord Mayor's river procession in 1484. As the Companies followed the Lord Mayor, the boats (like those in the painting on the Grand Staircase [see photos 6 and 9]) raced each other down the Thames. Eventually a brawl ensued, which left apprentices from both Companies dead. The Lord Mayor stepped in and a compromise was reached. Each year one Company would be ranked sixth and the other Company seventh. The following year the Company which had been sixth would fall to seventh and the Company which had been seventh would rise to sixth, and so on year after year. This rising and falling was set in tablets of stone when, in 1515, the livery companies' rankings were made official and it is still carried on today.

We use The Merchant Taylors for an annual event and its rich history and historic architecture makes it a perfect venue for the event. It’s particularly beautiful to host the close out cocktails around the fountain, in summer

My stepdaughter decided to have her wedding reception here and what a stunning venue it turned out to be. The location in central London was perfect for our needs. There is a long and interesting history to the building which adds to any visit. Clair, James and their team of helpers made the day go with military precision. They both give off an aura of being in complete control and nothing was too much trouble giving us the confidence that the day would go well irrespective of the weather. Our meal was of the highest standard served by exceptional staff. I've only tasted better in Michelin starred restaurants. My compliments to the chef! Overall I can't recommend this place highly enough, A perfect wedding day. Thank you Clair and James.

We hosted a full day work and client function at this venue. It's absolutely beautiful with its wood paneling, chandeliers, staircases, painings and old world feel. Lovely outside area to host the post event drinks. Catering was good.

We had our daughter's wedding on the 10th September. It was truly exceptional. The grandure and traditional of the hall is quite stunning Having read a previous review complaining that it was old fashioned and lacking glitz suggest you visit Dubai. We had 110 guests and the food and wine were quite exceptional. No wonder the Hall has a reputation as one of the best in London for dining. The service was totally professional. Yes the wedding was expensive but was tremendous value when compared with other venues.

I've been here a number of times, for both drinks receptions and black tie banquets. The quality of the food and service is consistently exceptional, and in my opinion above that which you receive at similar Central London banqueting locations. Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. The setting is beautiful, with drinks in the courtyard a particular treat on a warm summer's evening. One chap below complains its a bit old for his liking, but let's face it, if you like modern glitz then you probably won't go for this establishment, as Merchant Taylors's Hall doesn't pretend to be anything but. Utterly superb, please don't change a thing!

attended this venue for a conference and the staff were very approachable and keen to help. Food was pretty good even though the choices were limited. Some fantastic features of this period venue are not to be missed. Not very well signed for though so it is easy to walk past.

Went there for a wedding and thought the food and service were good, i found the place a bit too rustic. We all had a nice time. But the only negatif point was the manager, we could hear him shouting at the staff in the corridors which was quite awkward and unprofessional. But appart from him, we did enjoyed the weeding.

We recently stayed at the Rubens at the Palace Hotel and it was such a pleasure. From the cleaning staff, front desk, concierge, doorman, and all of the personnel in the restaurants and bars, every single person was very polite very helpful and very accommodating throughout the 10 days that we stayed there. Each evening after we returned from our daily activities, we were greeted like family. Soroosh was waiting in the restaurant eager to get us beverages and any late snacks we might want, even near closing time. I would highly recommend staying here not only because of the great location but mostly because of the great people you will meet there.

Tak for kaffe.
