Menier Chocolate Factory in Southwark

Great small theatre venue that often acts as a stepping stone for acts to transition to the West End. Undergoing significant renovations as of April 2025 but theatre space still doing shows

My friend and I went to the Menier Chocolate Factory to see Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors. The play was hilarious and the cast were brilliant. Absolutely loved it. Met three of the cast afterwards and they were so lovely and friendly. The theatre is fairly small but that just makes it more immersive. The outside of the building was covered in scaffolding so couldn’t see it in its full glory. Will definitely be visiting again.

Small theatre, really Comfy. Dracula's a comedy of terrors is the funniest show I've seen in an age.

Visited to see Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors. The theatre is lovely : easy to find (8 min walk from borough station), really comfortable seats with good views wherever you sit, friendly staff and a lovely bar. All in all it was a great experience and the okay was fab!

Currently undergoing renovations, so the toilets are outside. But I went here to see a show and the staff was very nice and I loved the homey feel of the theatre.

Awful and silly exchange policy.

Nice little theatre. The play and the cast was awesome. Even though they do only have portals at the moment, it is ok as it the luxurious kind. :)

Very special theater space with almost always top-level shows

The building is undergoing a much-needed reovation so not all the usual facilities are available. Great show though!

Due to travel delays myself and two others were two minutes late and denied entry despite being told that other customers were still coming and going to use the bar. No accommodation for travel delays when asking for a refund or exhange and we weren't going to cause any more disruption than those returning from the bar if we'd been let in a tiny bit after. I understand ten minutes, but overall really poor experience and frustrating as it ruined a birthday celebration.

It's a small theatre that can easily be missed on first going there. Fortunately, the street is short so its easy to find your way back to it. On entering, there's a good sized bar / refreshments area. The seating is on reasonably well padded bench style seating. Row A is almost on the small stage. Every seat has a good view of the stage. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. I was at the theatre to see Dracula, which runs until the end of May 2025. Its an absolute hoot. The actors appear to be enjoying themselves as much as the audience. I highly recommend bot the theatre and Dracula.

Avoid appears to be a bit of a scam place. Attended a performance advertised as starting at 3pm. We arrived a few minutes before and waited with a member of staff by the door for another member of staff to appear - only to be told they already seated everyone and show had began. By then it had only turned 3pm. Told to email box office for a refund and then passed again onto the third party ticket provider who won't refund because the theatre claimwe were late. £66 down the drain because the show started earlier than the time stipulated on the website. Will be going to small claims court for the refund.

Extremely small and cramped foyer. Arrive no earlier than 10 min before the start of the show. Even 5 if you can.

Excellent venue - productions are always amazing 👏

Small theater, located in an old chocolate factory (Menier), where many of the theater projects of the city of London are “cooked”, which are then usually transferred to the West End. Both musical and text. The quality of the productions and casts, as well as the proximity of the action, are impressive. The building is currently being rehabilitated, although this has not stopped its theatrical activity. You enter through a temporary door, on a side street. Before they had a restaurant that used to make a menu that was linked in some way to the work represented. Ideal for lunch or dinner before the performance. I hope they get it back when they finish the restoration. It is comparable to another venue in London called the Donmar Warehouse, near Covent Garden. Although the Menier is not centrally located, it is located in a very active area, just 400 meters from Borrough Market, opposite the City, Saint Paul, London Tower, Tower Bridge, London Bridge and the Beer Mile.

Producers was a wonderful show, 5 stars

This is a sweet little theatre which produces great shows. However the bench seats leave a lot to be desired. There is not enough room to sit comfortably

Brilliant Show, laughed from the start to the finish, absolutely brilliant cast in the Producers

First time here. Front is undergoing building work and alteration. Difficult to find entrance ( it's down the side). Bar good. Staff friendly and helpful. Toilets currently outside in a mobile block AND closed after the performance. Seating is benching which is OK BUT no seat arms means the space you have can be encroached into by your neighbours.

A lovely little theatre with some excellent productions, some on the way to the West End.

Very small, with worn seats, and portable toilets outside in the street! So you cannot use them during a show as they won't let you back into your seat. This should have been advised to ticket purchasers before the purchase of the tickets.The theatre also smells.

Unusual theatre, a little uncomfortable but show was good

What a hidden gem of a theatre! Went twice over the past 6 months and each time the experience was absolutely delightful: fantastic cast, high-value production, staging. Everything was top notch. Wishing the construction works to end asap so that we can all enjoy the theatre experience at its fullest.

We went to see The Producers, fabulous musical, great actors, fantastic production, recommended definitely. Unfortunately, venue was poor, building seemed like work in progress, seats were like cushioned benches, very crammed! For £75 a ticket the venue was not good at all. Even the stage was very small. This musical should really be in the West End. Well done to the actors, they performed superbly!

It’s a hidden gem in London… Unlike many plays where you simply watch, here, you become part of the experience. 👍✨💕 I’m torn about leaving a review—part of me wants to keep it under the radar to avoid it becoming another overly commercialized, Instagram-fueled busy spot 🙈 I’ve been to this place many times, but I was over the moon when Dillie Keane stepped on stage! Sometimes, booking a play without knowing much about it—or who’s in it—can lead to the best experiences ever! 🤫

The productions are a complete guarantee . Cynthia Erivo one of her 1st roles originated thanks to this venue. For me, the best productions in London. Small but that’s part of the charm. It feels exclusive of magic happening here. I just wish the restaurant had survived COVID cause it was also good.

Brilliant show - the Menier has done it again!

Impossible to find a bad seat in this intimate little jewel of a theatre. It seems to be permanently under renovations, but that's all part of the fun. This time round we saw The Producers which was just raucously sublime!

A very interesting and versatile venue, I'm amazed with the staging and use of space every time I'm there. The only downside is that they've been going through a refurbishment for a while now which makes the toilets quite cold. Other than that love the venue!

Great little theatre just off Southwark Street and a few minutes walk from London Bridge Station. The premises are undergoing building work at the moment so a side door is currently being used. It will be interesting to see it properly once the work is done. In the performance area itself, this was the first time I have encountered benches rather than the usual theatre seats. They did become somewhat numbing during the second half of the performance. They also mean that the audience is somewhat squashed together. All in all though, it was worth going to especially as the show, The Producers, was exceptionally good.

I always used to like this as a theatre but feel it’s actually unsafe in its current state. Steps to toilets are treacherous and the steps outside have a sheer drop which isn’t manned. Crazy.

Even when under refurbishment, this place was a lot of fun and the show was fabulous

The Producers is a great show on at the moment. Fantastic songs, great comic timing and tremendous dancing. Must see show if you have the time.

This is the second time we have been to this quirky theatre and it is even more quirky. At the moment it is in a state of major refurbishment so you enter via a side door. The stage is on the same level as the 1st row of seats so it is very cosy but the performances are top notch, this place needs your support . Please fix the seating comfort as at the end of a 2 hour performance I felt like I was in sitting on 2 iron bars, it is also a tight fit as you sit on benches and some people take up more room than others. We are Looking forward to seeing it refurbished because it is still a great night out.

Great place for those late night munchies

The Cabinet Minister play was excellent however, due to the current refurbishment the temporary "front of house" facilities are poor.

This hilarious ply, « the Cabinet Minister «  close in March, so don’t miss it! Performed in a converted Victorian chocolate factory near Borough underground station.

Great theatre space, good leg room and site lines

Good small venue for close up theatre. Seating arrangement on padded benches is unusual. So quite cramped overall.

Beware seats 5-10 as the air con is right behind you and fiercely cold

What a lovely theatre. Amazing! Great show. The Cabinet Minister. Great comedy and all the actors were also musicians and blended the music as they acted their roles. Great theatre and great show.

Rude and unprofessional Superior or Front House Manager Jasmin and Bar Manager. I was later for around 4-5 mins. I was not allowed to watch the show. there was no screen to watch and I had to stay at the entry point. The superior called Jasmin asked me to make a complaint to the superior and she then told me she is the superior. She asked me to complaint to the bar manager. I was confused I went for a show not bar. The bar manager shouted at me, Jasmin shut the door. The bar manager even shouted at me:" you haven't seen me shout" when I challenged her behaviour. The next day when I phone to make a complaint, Jasmin turned out to be Front House manager as well. She hadn't reveal her identity until I asked her name. She told me no one is around but someone will phone me next week. I hope it won't be her. She said normally there is no later comer (which I don't know what she mean), the late comer policy was made only for yesterday's show. But I checked later comer policy on line. I cannot complaint her to her. She should have let me know her identify when I phoned to make a complaint. I told her over the phone and in face she is rude and unprofessional. She can change policy as she wish.

My first visit to see The Baker's Wife. Fabulous show, lovely atmosphere, engaging and helpful staff, gorgeous scenery but sadly no level access to the bar and only one wheelchair space, which because it is in a highly sought area and not (as communicated to me that it would be) left available/held back for wheelchair users meant that I was severely restricted as to when I could go and watch my son perform.

Great location for tube access building is old and has a lot of character but it’s a smallish place so it’s gets very hot and you do have to take a steep flight of stairs to the toilet.

We visited on a not very warm day last week, but the temperature inside the theatre room was so hot and the air super stuffy. It really took away so much from the plesure of watching a show, because you could just concentrate how to make it breathing till the interval arrives. Why is there no air condition or at least a better way to get fresh air into the room?

We visited yesterday to see The Bakers Wife. It was a very enjoyable experience - the play itself and the venue. Staff were great and added to the experience. The theatre is in close proximity to London Bridge and the market.

We watched The Bakers Wife in this theatre and the show itself was so good, very immersive, seats were good. However, my complaint I have is the theatre was BOILING hot and I don't get warm easily. There was free tap water in the very small lobby, NB. This theatre would not be accessible for those in wheelchairs or using crutches, entry into the building was by steps, toilets are a bit of a trek downstairs and to get into the auditorium itself you have to go down a couple of stairs.

Came here to see the Baker’s wife and it was a decent production. What stole the show however, was the theatre. Amazingly immersive set up and a beautiful theatre. The foyer was under renovation but they have a good bar and reception running. Lots of nice theatre show posters on the wall. We loved this place.

The show was good. The theater was warm and stifling. We felt bad for the performers, who did their work brilliantly in the heat. Hope the renovation of this venue includes air conditioning!

Saw a matinee performance of The Bakers Wife, which was excellent. As ever, the theatre had a lovely intimacy with very friendly staff. Such a shame that the restaurant is still closed; hoping that it will reopen when the renovations are complete.

Love this theatre with nice bar area too. Have seen some great stuff here. Fiddler on the roof and the excellent and hilarious 'Brian and Roger - a highly offensive. Also saw' The 3rd Man' a musical. last week.

A fantastic theatre venue with plenty of character. Currently showing The Baker's Wife which was excellent. Staff are friendly, excellent view from all seats and a personal, intimate performance venue. Nearby there are quite a few bars so it's ideally placed if you want to continue your night afterwards.

I love this theatre. Being a regular patron, I was sad to see the restaurant close in the wake of the pandemic. I’m hoping it will reopen at some stage, returning it to a perfect venue for a little escapism from time to time. 😻

Menier Chocolate Factory is a great off westend theatre that produces an eclectic mix of generally musical theatre. The current Jerry's Girls, is a trio of actors singing a mix of Jerry Herman's songs written for women in many Broadway musicals. The seating and staging are versitile depending on the current production. The theatre generally offers cheaper pricing pre-opening.
