Mellow's Bar & Restaurant in Birmingham

Went here last night to grab some takeaway, wasn't sure it was available but asked the barman on entering who confirmed. Then proceeded to be ignored for 10 minutes in a near empty restaurant despite various staff walking past me, answering phones and enjoying themselves. Had enough and walked out without ordering. Poor service, lack of customer respect. Should have read the other reviews before wasting my time

Took almost an hour for us to get seated and then when we got seated had to ask 3 times for a drinks menu. they ran out of chicken and any other meat and the only option was sea bass which was disappointing wish we were told earlier so we didn’t have to wait almost an hour to be seated as we could of gone somewhere else. Food didn’t look great but tasted okay.

Came here for a table booked at 7pm. Food order was taken at 7:25 to be told half the meats were no longer available. We all ordered the chicken and fish. Food came out at 8:10 to be told there was no chicken left. If the communication had been better we would have then got up and left. Everything was just poor. Food was good but left a sour taste in our mouths after the service

Sad experience tbh came here on a Sunday was seated 20mins after my reservation without any explanation or apology. Ordered food and drinks as seated. Ate my meal before my drinks even arrived, drinks came over once again no apology for the delay. The chefs in the kitchen ringing off the bell for waiters to collect and send out food. The food was mediocre, frozen roast potatoes, very sad looking vegetables. The lamb was edible but dry as a bone. Easy to say mellows is on a downhill, won’t be visiting again

Me , my boyfriend , his auntie and her boyfriend recently visited mellows on the Saturday night. Upon arrival, we were seated straight away and given a food menu. Unbeknown to us , we were waiting for a drinks menu , which we then realised you had to scan the QR code on the table (which the waitress never said). We then ordered our lunch food, which took 45 minutes for the starter to arrive as they “couldn’t find” the chicken wings. We then recieved our mains which was cold , dry & the prawns were missing out the pasta which we paid extra for. Drinks were also really slow , we had to order 2 drinks at a time. The waitress started clearing our table before a couple of us had even finished eating which was extremely rude, then throws the bill on the table before we even asked for it. The overall atmosphere was good in there, food and service however wasn’t.

Food was nice, the wait was quite long. The drinks are too expensive. The menu is too small to read needs revamping. Not everyone has the app for scanning

went 24th september, was so lovely i got the jerk lamb with rice and peas, my cousin got the jerk chicken with rice and peas and my grandma got the curry mutton. The atmosphere was lovely and the food was amazing! i really reccomend the jerk lamb and curry mutton with rice and peas!

First time at this restaurant and definately won’t be our last…very quickly greeted on arrival we were a little early so sat at the bar area,it’s a lovely looking restaurant…seated on time and you order everything at the same time which really works…our food was by far the best we’ve had and we have had a lot of Caribbean food…staff we’re absolutely lovely very friendly and accommodating…I highly recommend giving this place a try you won’t be disappointed

The food was good. The service and the staffing team were nothing short of exceptional. One of the male servers helped me put my buggy away in a secure area. He really went out of his way and made us feel so welcome. The lady that took our order was amazing. The service was fast and professional. But, whilst we were dining we were bothered by fruit flies. At the end of the meal we were surrounded by six of them. My partner said they were also in the men’s toilets. It’s such a shame. From working in pubs I know this can often come from corkage/sugary spills or open fruit from the bar, ice machine build ups etc. I would imagine this needs attention. Please can this be addressed as we would love to come back!

Did not disappoint food was great and well seasoned! There was an issue with my cooking but staff made a very big effort to accommodate us on short notice.

Booked on line a week Tues 24th took my bank details I sent emails to confirm no reply after three times ringing as someone was going to call me the night before nobody did or the next day before 2 when they were opening. Two of my guest actually went to the restaurant to be told unfortunately due to online booking service had gone down there were no tables available other than one table of 4 which we had booked for a party of 13 people. This was very disappointing unprofessional friends and family travelling moving shifts and finishing work early. We booked an earlier slot for the 3 guest at 4.30 4 other guests at 5.30 the rest had to swop seats in between we managed. We all had a wonderful time drinks food was fabulous but such a disappointment on the booking side. No reply no response I'd like to say we persevered. Please think about your customers.

Cocktails were lovely and they changed them abit for us. Food was delicious! Keep debating if we'd go back and eat in because where we sat wasn't the most comfortable, felt canteeny. But the food!! And large portions. We had mac and cheese, curry goat, oxtail, dumplings, plantain and jerk chicken. Wish they did takeaway, had more comfortable seating and took larger bookings.

Really enjoyed the food, flavourful with good portion sizes. The service was really good too, great friendly staff. Overall would recommend and will come back to try more things off the menu.

I would have loved to have written a review about this place , however we booked a table on their site and when we arrived it was closed !!! They even sent an email on the day as a reminder of the booking. Why did they let us book and even remind us of the booking and not even be open!?? This was my first time visiting and will be the last , so unprofessional despite all the hype. On a positive note I had a lovely Chinese instead and saved alot of money 😎

We turned up without booking and was pleasantly surprised to have been accommodated within 5 minutes. We both ordered the oxtail with rice and peas. We as also had sides of fried plantain and dumplings. Thoroughly enjoyed it, great service and food. Would thoroughly recommend.

I have been wanting to go to Mellow’s for years and booked to go with family over the weekend. After we were seated it took about 30 minutes for someone to come and take our drinks order, they only came over as I went up to the bar to ask if someone could come over and take our order. We ordered food at the same time to avoid having to wait for someone to come again. The food took a while to come but it was nice when it did come. The Mac and cheese and mocktails were really good. However no one came over to the table to offer us to order any other drinks the whole time we were there. The staff weren’t in the restaurant they were all talking in the bar area the whole time. It took a while to flag someone down to get the bill and then we gave up and went to the bar to pay as it was obvious no one would come back. I was really disappointed in the experience due to the customer service and there didn’t seem to be anyone managing the restaurant . I wouldn’t return due to the service

It wasn't a busy day, due to bad weather. However we was made to wait 10+mins before a waitress came over to take a drink order. That order seemed quite a while to fulfil also. At which point we ordered starters and mains. The food itself was really well portioned and simply heavenly.

My fave spot whenever I travel to Birmingham, Chef Mellow is fantastic. The care and passion really shows in his food without losing authenticity. Rare to find these days.

I brought my partner here for lunch. I had the vegan xl jerk plantain which came with dumpling and plantain and I chose avocado and sweet potato fries. It was absolutely delicious. Service was good and the restaurant was clean and well looked after. Don’t forget to take cash for a tip as I wasn’t able to tip on my card.

Such a quality restaurant with amazing flavours! Was served by Natty and he had exceptional customer service, checked if the food was okay & whether we needed anything else. He also recommended the Jerk Chicken and this was delicious! Came from London and it was definitely worth it!

Bad service. Walked in 1 min late to a booking we made online due to lack of parking and they turned us away.

Terrible experience: The restaurant is over-run with flies. One remember of staff was spraying insecticide over customers, their food & drink. The service was slow & the staff don't have great customer service skills, they seated us 30 mins late for a 2 hour booking & hadn't finished bringing out our food & drinks when they asked for the table back. The food itself was not well made or good quality, lots of it was overcooked (fries / dumplings), dry (Chicken) & gave members of the party food poisoning (Fish) which the manager has blamed on a stomach bug. The salads looked old / withered & the waiter said they had missed a delivery. Wouldn't recommend or return.

Went for a family birthday, table of 8 drinks look 30mins to arrive at the table with one drink outstanding that took a further 20mins. Food arrived not long after around a 55min wait! Ordered chicken off the bone for one meal as meat on the bone isn’t for everyone, food arrived with every dish having meat on the bone, the waiter purposely avoided the table and sent someone else. I believed if your taking the order and confirmed the meals as the last dish to be brought over this should have been picked up & bringing something else to there attention just gets tiring!

Firstly, the food was excellent, authentic with no compromise on taste. The service (not with the food) was amateur, slow and distracting. One of the male 'servers' was prancing around full of ego, not going anywhere to do anything in particular just walking around in an animated manner being very distracting. The cutlery was taken away with the 'amazing' starter plate. When the main came out, I had to ask for fresh cutlery but instead of bringing it straight away she decided just to chill for a while chatting to the the man who was walking around, mentioned above. We were ASKED if we wanted more drinks when our mains arrived, we also asked for water for the table, the water never arrived and by the time our drinks turned up, after prompting, we had all but finished our mains. Table napkins were the small black square type you have in most place to rest your drinks on, these were being used as table napkins!! The cutlery came wrapped in these, see picture. These are not intended to be used as napkins as they are just too small therefore inadequate, especially when dealing with juicy finger food. The music was via a boom box rather than strategically place speakers giving out surround sound. Which was also distracting for conversations. Couldn't have dessert as the kitchen had closed. This is something most other restaurants would have alerted us to so we could place our orders a head of time. So no dessert. The food I can say was really good. Not sure if they do takeaways as I would rather take out than eat in.

Mellows was a great place to dine with friends and family, the food tasted perfect and the portion sizes were good. We had some trouble trying to book a table for 8, we were informed that group sizes of no more than 8 were allowed and they wanted to cancel our booking when we asked for a highchair for the baby (this would have made a group booking of 9) so we went ahead with the table for 8 with the intention of the baby sitting on our laps. When we arrived, there was another group who had booked for 14 people, those 14 people were directed to their tables with no issues, the tables were all set and ready for them and they enjoyed their evening. One of the staff members saw we had a baby who was a little restless having to sit on our laps and asked us if we wanted a highchair. Our drink orders were written down and once given to us, a member of the groups drink didn't arrive. This was pointed out to the staff and they apologised and said it would be brought over. 15 minutes later, a member of my group approached the bar and ordered a drink and surprise, surprise, his drink arrived before the missing drink! Eventually the missing drink arrived and we could continue with our meal. Like I said, the food and environment was brilliant, we cheered on everyone who was celebrating a birthday and had a nice evening but the customer service was a let down. I'm not sure why you advertise that group bookings can be no more than 8 when I clearly saw bigger groups being allocated spaces. The missing drinks issues was due to them only having 1 member of the bar team preparing drinks. During our time there, we were taken care of - after the slip ups, and the team made sure they would approach us several times to ask if everything was alright. Again with this, we could hear and see them telling people to make sure they came over and asked, it did make us feel like we're were a troublesome group when really we were just celebrating a 30th Birthday in which we didn't bring the cake and wanted very little fuss. I would go back again, I'd maybe end up arguing when they tell me a table of more than 8 people can't be booked but it would be worth the hastle! All I can ask is for you to please treat everyone the same and not change the rules for your friends or family.

Mellow’s Bar needs to franchise!! The jerk chicken was tender and succulent, the curry goat tasted like it came straight from Montego Bay at aunty Pats! Good vibes, good staff, good music and all at a very good price! 👍

We visited here for my daughters 18th birthday. The food was amazing and really generous portions definitely worth the money! The cocktails were lush too! Great atmosphere and the staff were all lovely especially the man that served us while we was there. Highly recommend!

This place is amazing food drinks absolutely the best place for me and my wife to celebrate our wedding anniversary we will be back soon. A massive shout out Adele she was friendly and very professional served us with a smile all night. Recommend all to come and try it was our first and won't be our last thank for making our night very special.

One Friday I called to book a table and was told to do this on the website. When I checked there were no suitable times. The following day I again tried to book but this proved too complicated as they required all of my details including a credit card, so I decided to walk there as we were only a few minutes away. When I got there, I asked for a table. The guy asked if I had a reservation and I said no, but I had tried to book one. He replied by saying that they don't accept walk-ins. I looked around at the empty tables. Clearly, they didn't want my custom nor were they welcoming or friedndly. I won't go there again and I suggest going to one of the many other great restaurants which are nearby.

Service isn’t the best and needs to be worked on. For example, we had to specifically ask them if they’re only serving Sunday roast once we were sat down as they didn’t explain it to us. Also, some waiters could do with being a bit more friendly and smile more. Nevertheless, the food was banging. Would definitely come back. It was a Sunday so they were only serving Sunday roast, really enjoyed the food and flavours. It tasted authentic

If you are ever in Birmingham, I urge you to try this authentic Caribbean Jamaican restaurant. When you walk in the ambience of the restaurant is great, it is warm and welcoming and the staff are just the same. The food is delicious with a real authentic taste, the seasoning and what they offer is just out of this world. I have been following them on Instagram for a long time now and it was on my bucket list on a restaurant to visit when I visited Birmingham and I was fortunate to be able to do that on on the 6th of July. This restaurant you will need to book as it is in demand and gets booked out quite quickly especially on Saturday evenings. You will not regret it, you will just keep coming back for more. Compliments to the chef and the staff for making my visit a wonderful experience.

Great food, really tasty, flavourful, and a nice, refined take on traditional carribean food. The cocktails were tasty in some cases (strawberry daiquiri and rumbay punch, but others a bit bland e.g. vodka cranberry). Service wasn't particularly great, given dirty glasses and no apology given. However, the other staff member was friendly and had a good laugh with us. The decore, lightning and atmosphere were great and the food was very well presented. Overall, pretty good.

This restaurant is absolutely AMAZING! First visit today and it won’t be our last. The food was next level DELICIOUS ….. authentic, so tasty, good sized portions and great presentation. A open view of the kitchen where the chefs are cooking (and singing 🎵). The staff were fantastic, happy and smiling with great knowledge of the menu and excellent service. Big shout out to Zee for looking after us tonight your service was truly outstanding! Great atmosphere and beautiful dining area. Loved the garden space too! Exceeded all my expectations. Another brilliant visit to Mellow's. Great atmosphere upon entry and was greeted by polite staff members. Unfortunately had to wait 20 minutes to be seated despite our reservation, but once seated it was a 5 star experience. I had the Sunday roast which was superb. The lamb and oxtail were both cooked beautifully along with all the sides and trimmings. I will be back for this if life spare.

Lovely restaurant. There's a large welcoming bar as you walk in. Friendly staff to greet you. The menu offers plenty of choice and the food is excellent. The only small issue would be that if you like a beer there is nothing on draught, it is bottles only. Other than than I would recommend anyone to book here. We'll definitely be returning.

This was my first visit to Mellows and it will be my last. Booked a table for 4pm on 25th May, on arrival we were told to wait because our table wasn't ready, after a short wait we were shown to a table, the waitress did not greet or make eye contact with us, menus were on the table so we had a look. After a long wait another waitress came to the table to take our orders. The food came fairly quickly, the presentation was awful, meat piled up on the rice, potatoes and chips. We were half way through our meal and had to ask for our cocktails and grandaughters drink which was included with her meal, we waited and waited and had to ask for water and cocktails a second time, at no time during our meal were we asked if everthing was ok with the food? Table was cleared and the bill plunked on the table, my granddaughter had a dessert included but this was not offered so she had no dessert, we weren't offered a dessert either, instead I asked for the birthday cake that I bought in and had it at home. Although the food was ok, the attitude of the staff, atmosphere, dried food stains on the chairs, location, parking I would not recommend this restaurant. Staff needs to go on Customer Service Courses, take a leaf out of restaurant like Adians book.

Let’s keep this brief My 2nd here there is a difference… The value for the money no longer compares We all ordered XL plates and no way was it filling as what we expected.. when I upload the pics look at the hand in comparison to the salmon.. the price was 1 dumpling is ridiculous.. the mocktails are too sweet.. for me the price has increased but the portion size has massively decreased we left somewhat disappointed and to be honest I won’t be coming back here again.. I had fried chicken and the portion for the fried chicken was also smal.. one person had a normal size meal and again that was very small.. ( couple ladies had salmon and stated it was very salty) so again it was a major let down and now to over hyped!

Visited here at lunchtime on a weekend and it was fairly busy. I recommend booking in advance if possible. Very friendly greeting on arrival. I only had time for a quick meal so opted for the jackfruit curry with Rice and peas. Excellent food beautifully presented. Nice decor inside and very clean. Highly recommended.

lovely atmosphere, friendly staff with authentic food (as a jamaican). the meat was very tender and well seasoned. the portion sizes were great had to take some home! the drinks were sweet which is right up my street. will be visiting again ordered the xl oxtail with rice and peas, and mac and cheese with jerk prawns + xl curry goat with sweet chilli prawns + apple crumble and custard + tropical melody rain cocktail

Attending mellow’s was a massive disappointment as i’d heard from friends that this place was highly recommended. The entire experience was not enjoyable at all including the food, service and i regret spending my money there. I went on the 25th May to celebrate my 21st birthday with one friend. Our reservation was at 7:30pm and were sat at 7:35, we were brought to our table and given drinks and food menus. Within a couple of minutes both of us were ready to order but ended up waiting 20 minutes for anyone to take our order. Several times we made eye contact with members of staff but was ignored until getting one’s attention, we had our order taken. We ordered the two for £15 cocktails one each, the pina colada’s and strawberry daiquiris, which were okay but felt like mocktails rather than cocktails. The service was extremely poor where we didn’t get our cocktails until 8:15 despite them sitting on the bar service waiting for a member of staff to deliver them. For food we had ordered the jerk chicken pasta with cheese which came out at 8:25, considering we had been sat at 7:35 is shocking. Worsening this, my pasta dish had hair in it and it took a couple minutes for me to find a member of staff to deal with this as no check back on the table was done. i then had to wait 15 minutes for my food to be prepared again and had to call our next place to push the original reservation forward as the delay here was longer than it should have been. Not to mention the atmosphere was warm and swarmed with fruit flies making the entire experience disruptive when eating and drinking. When my food was brought out, i was met with a brief sorry, but again no check back after 5 minutes was done. As it came to the end of our meal we were again met with 10 minutes of waiting due to staff having their own conversations and not watching over their customers. When the bill was given, they had charged me full price for the pasta dish which should’ve never been done considering there was hair in my food and i had to wait an extra 15 minutes for the new order. When discussing this with one member of staff it seemed like what i was asking was unreasonable and unrealistic. I got the bill back and was told that i only could get 25% off the pasta dish which was minus £4 from a £18.99 dish and not 50% like i had requested because the manager was not on shift that day. I ended up paying my part of the bill but left completely unsatisfied. I honestly wouldn’t recommend coming here, but if you still wanted to try it, definitely consider coming on weekdays rather than weekends.

Food was okay… small portion and rice and peas tasted bland. Really bad customer service one of the mixraced girls with curly hair had bad attitude did not serve us at all when waiting 30 mins to order , I had asked her if I could order her vexed up self gave me attitude. Thanks to the other girls who served us they were amazing. Black people need to do better one smile one little greeting would be nice instead of giving me attitude because I asked to order 😩😩.

Amazing first experince for myself, food was nice and portion size was big. Its ashame i never had enough time to fully enjoy it. Atmosphere and vibes 10/10 staff were very friendly and respectful . The only issue was x1 order was slightly wrong. We highlighted this as a learning curve rather than criticism but definitely we'd go back when we can, to spend more time in Birmingham the train strikes impacted this. Thank you very much. 😃

Horrible experience. We pre booked and table. I arrived 10 minutes early for my table. We waited ages for our pre booked table! The food was not even all that, I can cook better. The only good thing about the place was the cocktails. Horrible service, and ok food. Wouldn’t recommend.

Went for a family meal. Staff is very patient. Food was ridiculously expensive. But I'm broke so everything is expensive. Food nice, though. Everything is over £15, including the starter.

I have to be honest I wouldn’t even give this place 1 star. Went over the weekend after so many people have raved about this place for a birthday meal. I thought this was a dressy venue lucky my partner persuaded me to dress casual and I’m glad I did as this is nothing special nothing high end!! Walked in no one acknowledged us literally sat around until someone asked and we mentioned we had a table 10 minute wait to be seated tables were not clean 1 hour in we still hadn’t received our drinks! Food looked good great for pics but tasted appalling!! The jerk is not jerk is boiled chicken with a sauce over it! For anyone who’s used to proper Caribbean shops this food is not Caribbean. Curry goat was ok. The rice was clumped up!! How can you mess up rice? Lol. Everyone seemed to be complaining. Tbh for a mid priced placed this wouldn’t have been THAT bad but for the price they charge nah it’s a joke. We went 85-90? For that price bracket baring in mind we could have gone millers and been treated very well I expect clean tables and to at least be acknowledged seems like a bunch pf kids messing around running a food business. I wouldn’t return if THEY PAID ME 😭 never ever I recommended nothing at this place the food is overrated so so disappointed in all the social media influencers and celebs who have promoted this place

My meal oxtail was nice. Rest of orders bland..and plate packed with more garnish than food! . Little over priced for service and quality of food. Not as expected as came highly recommended- disappointing 😌

Been waiting to go here for a while and I was very excited to dine here, but the funny looking creature with nasty attitude at the front desk ruined for me. Her lack of customer service is ridiculous Mellows should put her in the kitchen or cleaning the toilets so we don’t have to see her face ever again if anyone is confused as to who I’m talking about, it’s the witch looking lady with the crooked teeth

Fantastic food as always great flavours and reasonable price for the quality, however service was poor , ordered a drink when food came out, finished our plates and waited a further 10 minutes still no drinks, asked for the bill and for these to be taken off , still charged for them, waited a further 5 minutes at the front to then be questioned by the same person saying that we had received the drinks.

Used to be my favourite place but what is the reason for the price jump? i used to always get the jerk lamb XL for £21 and now its £32? for the exact same thing ? smh

I had a lovely Mellow’s experience, being Caribbean I find it very hard to find restaurants that are “Caribbean Authentic” but I’ve definitely found my spot it reminds me of when im Back at home, Food is made from and with Love, Presentation wise it’s stunning, Staff are very professional and attentive very good service, the chefs are very nice kudos to them and The drinks are too damn good. If considering please dont hesitate you will love the experience. I had the Jerk Chicken Breast XL meal with sweet chill prawn, dauphinoise potatoes with Rice and peas. And Drinks wise I had the Mellow Dramatic 10/10 🩷

Came here for mothers day. As soon as you walk in restaurant, they greet you with a friendly welcome, staff are friendly. Took a while to take our order. Order some cocktails,, they were very nice. Food was hot, but came with no cutlery, the only downfall about the menu is that it is strictly Sunday roast, you don't have the option to order off the main menu, I brought my two children and they don't like roast dinner so I couldn't have the option to order fries or something they would eat. And they don't do deserts on Sundays. I was most upset about that. When I asked why they don't do deserts on Sunday they told me I need to speak to the owner. So yeah overall, was not impressed.

The food was amazing cant fault it, the service was good but the waiters had a weird obsession of taking our plates before we had finished which was very annoying, made us feel as if we needed to be hurried out

Really nice reggae music and the food was amazing too, very filling.

The food here was simply authentic and divine. Granted it is on the pricey side but the food portions are large and the service was very good. I would highly recommend visiting here.

After wanting to try this place for ages we finally went but the waiting time and service were awful. We were starving when we got there and had to wait for half an hour just for drinks and then another half hour to even order food and we got no reassurance from anyone we were literally just blanked until i finally got someones attention. Was so tempted to walkout but we were too hungry. Oh and just to add, part of my order didn’t even come but sure enough they put it on the bill

Food 10/10, service 10/10, cocktails 10/10. I would definitely come back and highly recommend!

The chefs at Mellows aren't ordinary chefs. They are culinary wizards, alchemists of Caribbean tastes, sensations and tongue indiced flavoured memories that restores and nourishes the soul. Soul food so succulent your mouth thanks you for dining there. Not even the knife and fork were worthy to hold such food. Yes, it was that good. Zee (sorry if I spelt your name wrong) and Josh were wonderful hospitality staff. Humorous, diligent and professional. How many cairbbean resturants have professional staff? Let alone young, mature, self aware professional staff? Exactly! I ordered, I saw, I gave thanks, I ate, I paid, I tipped and felt compelled to bless these conductor's of gastronomic delights who created a symphony of herbs spices flavours and soul loving pleasures that you just can't match in other gastornic establishments of fine expereincial dining. What do I mean by experiential? These demigods, weild some serious culinary carribean arts in the kitchen. Mellows has made their kitchen a sacred space. Its restorative, uplifting insoiring lovinng, caring and blessed. Food isnt simply food, its Mellows soul restoring food. Quality well cooked well served well enjoyed well priced love on a dish. As I said earlier an alchemy of vibes, soul nourishing, problem solving, give thanks to God encouraging cuisine. 🙏🏾 hmm! hmm! hmm! If ever there was a Birmingham Bible of Food, Mellows would be the first three Books: Book 1: Alchemists of Taste, Book2: Conductor's of Flavours to Savor and Book 3: Soul Food to Lift any Mood. Wow.
