Melbourne Fry in North Ayrshire

This chipshop used to be the best but now it is awful. White chips and you get more fish in a pack for £2 in Morrison's. I am a Stevenston Local and this chip shop is now barred in our house. Never Again £15 wasted.

White chips and fish had very little filling. This chippy used to be excellent but now poor at best. This chippy is now banned in our house. Total waste of £15.

Best fish and chips in Ayrshire. We were visiting from Ireland. Tried a few places. Staff are brilliant. Great value.

Outstanding traditional chippy! My favourite for fish by a mile and I’ve tried fish up and down Scotland! It’s freshly made to order so sometimes a little wait but trust me it’s worth it! Not a bone in sight! Pure white fish inside. The rest of the chippy stuff is great also and all great value we often get the family meal box which has plenty for all the family (family of 4) I’ve always take away so can’t comment on the sitting in experience, I often take my meal down to the beach and enjoy it with a view …..bliss!

Very tasty steak pie supper! Nice cuppa tea too. Prices are great too, for sitting in. Staff are very attentive, cheery and helpful. The place to go for chips!!

Took my girls for dinner tonight. The staff were excellent and very friendly. Food was cooked fresh and did not have to wait too long. The sit in is very cozy and has a friendly atmosphere, staff were very welcoming to my very chatty 6 year old. Would recommend to everyone. Best chippy in the three towns.

Decent chippy; fish was lovely and cooked fresh, chips & cheese was a tiny portion with very little cheese, next time i would ask for 2 portions of chips and cheese. Was good that it was wrapped in old school news paper.

Delicious fish and chips (Scampi was yummy). Cooked very nicely. Service was attentive and friendly. Place was comfortable and clean. Prices extremely reasonable - portions were massive, we left stuffed. Loved the fact that there was loads of seating. Just gutted we didn't get to go back to try a quarter deep fried pizza during our stay in the area. Highly recommend for a generous, homely chippie tea. Please support local gems like these! Thanks to the staff for a lovely dinner and the warm welcome.

What a gem of a chippie! Excellent special fish (haddock in breadcrumbs) and a generous helping of chips - we got some coleslaw on the side to have some vegetable - and a really good price too. The staff were amazingly friendly, and everything was done with a big smile! All told, an excellent experience, and I'll definitely go again.

Fresh! Crispy and super chips! Despite living in the next town we'd never tried The Melbourne before, don't know how we missed it, so glad we tried it tonight. Small fish supper was a great sized portion, the fish just flaked away and tasted really fresh. Great price too!

Best chips iv had in a long time and very good prices too

All 3 of us had a small fish supper, 2 battered and 1 in breadcrumbs. Didn't take long to cook and was delicious, just enough and no waste. Tasty fish and chips were not too chunky or just shrapnel. Takeaway wrapped in newspaper, just like the old days ❤

Found this place by accident and now come back every weekend for the last month. Freshly fried and great quality fish every time, really tasty (the batter is so different and better than others). Chips are always fresh and not too greasy. Coupled with this, the staff are very friendly and make the whole experience so much better. Top marks!,

A wee gem in Saltcoats. The food is excellent, great selection and the staff are always so welcoming and can't do enough for you. They also have heinz tomato sauce which is always a bonus with the kids 😉

Ah, le "Fish'n Chips" un met exceptionnel et dans ce cas, délicat. Le poisson était croustillant, les patates frites croquantes à shouhait. Et vous savez pourquoi? Tout est frais, préparé sur place et devant vous. Bon appétit!!

I’ve tried many fish suppers and this is by far the best I’ve had! It’s fresh and amazing and not a bone in sight! The other chip shop things are also delicious too but the fish is unbelievable!

Anytime I'm in the area I pop into The Melbourne Fry. Never had a bad fish supper from there. Yesterday I sat in and had delicious crispy non-greasy fish, perfect chips washed down with a mug of hot tea. Great value tasty food.

Typical chip shop cafe with good menu. On street parking, easy access and clean toilets, well worth a visit and reasonably priced menu.

A great fish supper from a friendly team. Round the corner from the legendary Melbourne cafe sits this fine establishment. There is plenty of on street car parking and a Sainsbury’s car park only about a hundred metres away. Inside, the place is spotless. I had a freshly cooked traditional fish supper (shown) and it really was very tasty. The staff were friendly and attentive. This venue is also known for featuring on the TV programme Still Game when it was reportedly situated in the town called Finport (other scenes shot at Saltcoats Harbour and Largs).

Chippy has the best fish around but unfortunately its a big let down when it comes to delivery they only deliver for 4 hours and only on certain days and you cant pay through app or card im surprised its still open a wee bit of modernising wouldnt go a miss

Amazing! Went with my friends and was £20 for 3 full meals, 3 drinks and extra sauce! The curry sauce was to die for and fish was lovely and soft and flaky on the inside with a great crunch😍 Would definitely return again

After a fantastic day on Arran and the ferryvride back everyone was starved. There was not a lot of choice available for a large party with a dog. This fish shop was recommended to us by locals and we were not disappointed. Humble though it was the chips were perfectly cooked, the fish fresh and the batter very light. We were very impressed with the warm welcome and excellent service. We highly recommend.

Despite the language barrier, we managed to communicate suitably well, the two young ladies serving were outstanding ambassadors for both the restaurant and the town. Advice on fish suppers and steak pies was on the button, but the gravy…. Exceeded all expectations, The two young ladies and the food stop should be a landmark on the West Coast of Scotland and the gravy considered UNESCO status.

We only had a fish supper but apart from being underseasoned and the smallest portion I have experienced, it was very nice. Possibly one of the best I have tasted. When I took my phone out to pay for it, I was told by the delightful young lady, "cash only", really?, in a pandemic? I take it the payment method is to keep prices down, ok, then please make the meal larger. Had I been able to stand in the shop and see what I was getting, I would have bought more, what we had was nice though, this may have been a "one off".

Went down tonight (15-5-21 ) ordered a king rib and special fish after having to run round to a bank as was told "we only take cash" a phrase I thot was long gone I got home only to open chip bag up to only what I can describe a "shammy" style soggy king rib what a disgrace to actually call this food I,ll NEVER be back in this place what a waste of money

Best fish and chips I've had in years! Ordered the special fish supper - the fish was huge, flaky,as it should be and cooked to perfection. The chips were plentiful and not at all greasy. Highly recommend a visit!

As a regular customer, this is by far my favourite takeaway. The fish is great quality and is always served with a smile. Will definitely be back!

I placed an order via phone to collect, picked up order to take home, upon opening it was totally wrong food, phoned back to inform them only to be told they gave me a family deal as a bonus ( chips, cheese, onions, fritters, curry sauce,) who would class this as a family meal, l insisted on my original order which was 3 different suppers, l then had to drive back to exchange food, eventually after returning home and opening food, it looked unappealing, disgusting to be honest, l would be surprised if they have any Oil left in the Fryer as it saturated not only the wrapping of my orderbut also my workshop, the full order went in my dust bin, my advice would be to avoid this place, worst service and food ever experienced.

Fish and chips in general are a fast food in trouble as the price keeps going up. £6.50 now for a fish supper !!! It is a shame as fish and chops were always Scotland's fast food and now it is slowly fading away. I don't see an answer or alternative as fish and fishing prices keep rising and perhaps fish and chips will soon fall into something different than a fast food alternative because of the price.

Oh first went here for a coffee which was lovely , then decided to go back another time for a snack at lunch time with my husband who is in a wheelchair , easy to get in as double doors and staff always ready to help , so had the best bacon roll there we have had for a long time , would def recommend the food x

Been eating out of here for around the last 16 years on and off. Got to be honest I support quality from local company's This visit on the 30th August. Family ordered the special fish supper. To be fair the fish was done is something other than batter should be breadcrumbs but not sure what the fish was done in but it was tasteless and also in multiple bits. It was a fish supper I wanted and not a bits of fish supper. Going elsewhere as I had a similar one mid May but put that down to a one off. Seriously just avoid because I will not be back

Had a smashin fish supper doon the shore front, Bears first yin and he loved it, he was greetin at me as i was blowing on his bit tae cool it for him. X

This is a great wee fish and chip shop, especially the wee sit in area. Nice and pleasant staff and the wood was fantastic. First time but definitely not my last time.
