Had the Royal Banquet for two - which was far too much to eat if I'm honest. Place is fine - loads of staff and yes perhaps not so keen on idle chatting or smiling but did not spoil anything. Food was OK - Dim Sum part was better but the rest was quite average and disappointing. The addition of a bill service charge is not that unusual and we didn't mind.

We were looking for dim sum in Liverpool City and were told of this restaurant. It was extremely busy inside and it indeed served dim sum but the quality was not to my usual expectations down south. Overall a bit disappointing and you feel they could do better. Service is good though

No queue time when we arrived during lunch hour on Saturday. Serving within 10 minutes upon ordering We ordered seaweed soup, and it was delicious. Fantastic cooking soup skill as seaweed still maintain its juicyness and freshness. 4 stars We ordered Roast duck and roast pork rice. First impressions when the rice was presented, it just liked a leftover dish. We never eat any hong kong restaurant in so many continents that present food like this. For taste wise, roast pork was terrible. Each slice just like leftover and the pork outer layer was too salty. It seems like reheat. 1 star. For the roast duck, we found 2 slices really taste delicious. Other slices were terrible. 1 star

We were looking forward to a Chinese in Chinatown as we thought it would be a good experience and we are adventurous eaters. Indain food from Curry miles is always so wonderful. However to say we were disappointed is to understate it significantly! My chili beef was average at best. The other dishes were absolutely disgusting to be generous. The chicken dish was congealed and gloopy. The mixed meat consistted of 99% undercooked offal. The staff were pretty rude and we couldn't get out quickly enough and it spoilt what was otherwise a lovely trip to Liverpool. Sadly there's not a zero star rating on this site otherwise I would have chosen this!

Mei Mei is a must visit if you like Chinese food and are in Liverpool. Located just by the gates of Chinatown by the Anglican Cathedral, it is your classic large, efficient and almost always full Chinese. The fact that around of 75% of diners there are normally of Chinese heritage says a lot. The food cannot be faulted, and the dumplings are excellent! Go for it. 😎👍🏻

The place was packed on a weekday afternoon compared to other Chinese restaurant nearby so decided to try. Soup dumplings were great and flavourful but other dishes didn’t impress. There were some communication issues with menus (for dim sum menu the paper that you fill the order in is in Chinese so you’d be ordering to a staff if you don’t read Chinese) which led to some incorrect order. Asked for chilli oil and vinegar, and was provided something different. We also had to ask for bowls, chopsticks and spoons whilst other tables seemed to have these as a standard.

Pretty typical Chinese restaurant in the heart of Liverpool. Service great, and pretty quick. Been here many times and every time it’s been a great experience. The menu is great, not the cheapest however it’s not too expensive. There are great choices of starters, which are absolutely delicious. The mains are also good, however I usually order many starters which fill me up. The atmosphere is pretty good, with a lot of space so not much worry on whether you will get a table or not.

Out of expectation as the portion is very generous, enough to feed 1.5 person for a rice/ noodles dish. The 焗飯is really impressive as a lot of details can be found for this. Fried rice base, instead of plain white rice. A lot of seafood, which has been cooked/ fried and seasoned with flavour. Then the rice is baked for a crispy taste.

Yup, another update : But this could possibly my last one on this restaurant, why ?Find out below. Mei Mei used to be one of the go to restaurant in Liverpool, unfortunately it had gone downhill steadily. Long story short, Dad wanted to try the Update 25 January 2020: Back here for a Chinese New Year lunch meal with family. We were shown to a table upstairs (as the lower floor is full, understandably). Wasn't too bothered from previous good experience. Well, we were very wrong. From the off, trying to catch the attention of the waiting staff to make an order is near impossible as they hide in a corner not visible from the customers. We spent a good 10 minutes trying to make an order. The food arrived relatively quickly. By then, we were out of tea. You can imagine trying to catch their attention again to fill the teapots. In the meantime, the table next to us walked out as they had enough trying to order their meal. The thing is it was not even half full upstairs, so no excuse there. To be fair, the food were up to standard, the dim sum were tasty, so we try to enjoy ourselves. Forgot to mention last time is that you don't ask for the bill, but pay at the reception. Interesting. The bill comes to a little over £100, it seems about right. But examine the bill more closely, a 10% service charge was included which was a bit of a joke. We couldn't see any advertisement of the service charge anywhere including the menu. And the service we received was more in line of the 1% mark. We didn't want to make a fuss for it is CNY, so we left it at that. Is it so hard to get a up to standard service at a Chinese Restaurant nowadays ?! In summary, service is a bit of hit and miss, so be informed. And ... remember to check your bill !! _________________________________________________ Update 5 January 2020: Went to Mei Mei for a quick Dim Sum lunch on Monday, it was unusually busy with both floors opened and had to wait for a table. After the previous experience, we were expecting the same non-service from the staff. To our surprise, the staff were very attentive; all the things they missed last time has been done quickly and professionally. Almost like two completely different sets of staff. As we were ordering our Dim Sums, we couldn't find one item on the sheet and we were talking amongst ourselves. But it was overheard by one of the staff and quickly show us where it was. I think a praise is in order, and it is little things like this that gives a good impression to customers. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

Stale pancakes that fell apart and were like cardboard, 1/2 duck also distinctly didn't taste fresh. A mushroom dish that was just British style mushrooms swimming in soy - disgusting. Lamb on sizzling platter was so chewy that we stopped trying to eat it altogether. This was the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten in the UK. The price for these dishes and 3 glasses of wine was £76. The service from an older lady was cold to the point of rudeness, but the two young lads who brought stuff too were fine. The restaurant decor is very tired and a little bit grubby. There are far, far better options for Chinese food in this area.

Beautiful restaurant in the inside. I came here from the US on vacation. I went here last night was taken back by how awful the service was. The waitresses were EXTREMELY rude and unpleasant with massive attitudes. Never checked on us one time, and made it seem like anything we asked for bothered them. This is a nice restaurant but I felt let down by them on my latest visit. We got there about 8.40 and were giving seats and menus. Waiter came along and asked if we wanted drinks while we read the menu. Shortly after this another waiter came over asking if we had decided and we would have to hurry up because they close at 9.30! If that's the case why didn't they tell us then when we arrived and shown to our table. The food was good but the experience was definitely rushed and just to make things worse they wanted us to pay before we had even finished eating. A lesson was learned maybe I should of checked the times but maybe the staff need to tell customers rather than making them feel like they need to go ☹. Got to change this 5 star review to a 3 unfortunately

Food is really good, you will not be disappointed and should deserve a 5 star, as a couple I would highly recommend it but many of us have families and with babies they don’t have high chairs with straps. This meant we had a 16month year old trying to disrupt everyone’s meal as he could escape, he’s usually absolutely brilliant, but with substandard baby chairs (with no straps what do ever) it meant we had to hold the baby for the entire meal, when spending a fair amount for a family of 4 you’d expect to enjoy your meal.

After having a look at some of the other reviews, I feel slightly that I might have missed something. We were the only English in the resturant and boy is it busy so I could understand if people felt it was a bit frantic. But we certainly did not feel we were rushed and any we felt staff were quite understanding. £90 for four of us could be seen as expensive but we felt well fed and this is a resturant not a take away or all you can eat diner. We had no issues with the food, in fact, to my taste buds it was spot on and hot. The front of house watched staff like a hawk so I am a little suprised that other diners had issues. We were let down by other dishes; eggs fried rice (please look at the photo, you can hardly see any eggs); roast duck (it was freezing cold and fatty); kung po chicken (again very cold and literally just slapped with bean sauce).
