2020 review for Vegan Spartan Restaurant: Very tasty food and medium size portions. Decorations are lovely, staff is friendly and on Mondays you get 50% off on desserts. Rather expensive compared to other local restaurants but it's worth every penny. Definitely will return.

Delicious food, beautifully presented in a lovely atmosphere. It was just a weekday evening, but this place was really quiet. It deserves more customers! One suggestion for the owner - I wanted to leave an extra tip for the service & chef, but, when I asked, even tips above the 10% set service charge don’t go to the staff. Would be great if it was possible to give extra to the staff :)

Very quiet at Sunday lunchtime, which was ominous, but tripadvisor said it was the best nearby after a trip to see Santa so dived in without reading any reviews (which I'd normally do). Huge restaurant, nice modern decor. Had our pic of tables and plenty of space for the pram and a high-chair, The menu was extensive with everything from posh sounding modern-european dishes, to pizzas, burgers and sunday lunch. Was never going to order sunday lunch in this sort of restaurant, couldn't imagine it would be their thing. Was going to do the posh menu, and had already picked a starter when we spotted there were Romanian dishes on the back of the menu. The staff looked Romanian, so that was decision made for mains, if a restaurant is quiet go for what they probably specialise in. And glad we did. The belly-pork bun starter was delicious, as were the Romanian soup and the pick of the bunch - a main of various pork meats, pickles, polenta, fried egg and brinza (cheese from the region). Really tasty and nice presentation. Too stuffed for dessert as the portions were generous. Service was friendly though not polished. Came to under £20 a head including a drink and service, so mighty fine value for the excellent food. A few more folks came in whilst we were eating and I saw pizzas and burgers delivered both of which looked very nice. The whole town centre was pretty quiet so maybe that's why they're not busy. Would definitely return and try more from the menu. One ask though, how about a Romanian beer on the menu? Had several of my favourite craft beers on, so it's not like I didn't enjoy my drink, but I like to try a "local" beer with my local food.

The place really clean and the food amazing, big portions and the prices really good. So happy. Just mention that everything I order was vegan.

Really bad service. Very slow and server was away with the fairies. We mentioned an allergy that was ignored, and we had to send my friend's food back. My other friend didn't get their meal until everyone else had finished eating. Staff weren't even apologetic about it.

I went to this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. Although on the Internet it is mentioned that on Sunday the program is until 10pm, at 6pm they told us that they will close soon. Because we were the last clients in the restaurant we didn't feel comfortable as we had that feeling that they want to close but we are still there. It was difficult to decide what to order as they didn't have some meals from the menu, like fish and lamb. They said that they run out of stock because Saturday was fully booked. The food was just average. I won't go back.

Best steak ever! The food was amazing and the presentation was incredible.

Barraca has an extensive choice of foods and dishes. They also have a separate Romanian menu with a lot of choice as well. We ordered the duck breast, pork belly, Romanian soup, mussels, fries and Romanian cheese donuts. I would recommend the duck breast, which was cooked well. Romanian soup was quite salty though the portion size was more than adequate. The Romanian cheese donuts were quite unique with a combination of sweet and sour tastes. Waitress was friendly however it would've been useful to be informed of what dishes were not available on the day as a lot of the dishes were sold out.

Went for a special Bithday treat, 4 adults 2 kids, love it because they always rush the kids food through so they fo t have to wait.

Before the food was outstanding but now something strange happened. I've been given burned food and not tasty at all...I have had some expectations from this restaurant but unfortunately I was disappointed ..

The place was nice and inviting but couldn't say the same about food. My lamb kebab didn't taste like lamb at all and chips smelled overwhelmingly of rapeseed oil. It was more like eating in a cheap diner. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing but my experience wasn't great.

Such amazing reviews - what a great place to celebrate my daughter’s graduation. Very organised and booked well ahead of time and received my email confirmation. Thank goodness we happened to check the menu out (1 hour before leaving home) to discover the restaurant had closed - that day!!!! I tried to call and text but no response. Beyond disappointed that no one had attempted to make contact. I see the phone number remains the same, yet after my distressed text, I received no response whatsoever. Thankfully we managed to find a booking for a wonderful meal and in restaurant that knows how to treat their customers.

Really fancied to try this place. Let down booked for Sat night turned up on time, paid for parking and there shut. Apparently change of management such a let down as we had confirmation email it was for a birthday meal. 👎🏽Reply is incorrect there was no cancellation email I have just checked. Poor management to try and justify a poor review. Left even more disappointed after the reply. Don't think We will go back. Using Google maps as we are local why would you?

Had a meal tonight for a friend’s birthday, 30 plus diners in our group and you simply couldn’t fault anything, excellent service and amazing food A good bottle of Malbec for £24 🍷👍 will definitely be back

Had a lovely meal with my family of 5. Lady Bassett was very impressed with her blue steak, we all had different meals and we each loved our dishes. A lot of dishes to choose from menu, and they never hold back on the food. If you’re hungry, you are fed! You will leave either full or very satisfied. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, they will aim to please. Very posh inside with lovely features. We came from Solihull Birmingham for a funeral in Hamel Hampstead. As we are staying just for the night we decided to have a meal and MY DAYS!! Barraca is now one of our top favourite restaurants to go to. So for anyone who is staying in Hamel Hempstead or anyone who wants a nice meal. I will highly recommend this restaurant!

Short summary Atmosphere - welcoming and chilled Staff and management - super helpful and extremely polite Kid friendly - yes, the kids portions are massive Menu and range selection - good all round selection of foods for vegans and meat eaters too Recommend to friends and family - yes Cleanliness - yes Note - place is really nice but a bit out of place in the chosen location and could do so much better in another location.

Delicious food; the sour chicken soup was unexpectedly amazing, and the mixed grill for 2 was a carnivore's dream. We ordered the garlic sauce to go with it, which was exactly what it needed - it's very strong though, so be cautious if you don't like raw garlic! Service was fine, couple of minor hiccups that were sorted almost immediately, likely because it was early on a Sunday evening. Would have liked a larger selection of wines, but the pinot grigio turned out to be a very acceptable Venetian wine, nice and light. Didn't order dessert as we were too full. We will be back!

Nice restaurant and good food and coffee

Was looking forward to my visit but disappointed in my meal and service

Came as part of a small group of 7. Over-priced, portion size disapppointing, inconsistence portion sizes, dessert menu very limited, poor to little customer service. Kept waiting, had to keep asking for service, And a compulsory service fee!! (For doing what?). Can't even blame the disappointing overall experience on it being busy, it wasn't, not even for a Friday. I won't return.

After a recommendation from someone else, we decided to go and were not disappointed, the food was amazing as we're the staff, nice to see a restaurant with such a good choice for vegans too, highly recommend.

Overall a good atmosphere. Very friendly bartender/mixologist. The menu is nicely curated and the food was absolutely delicious. The only slight negative was the relatively slow service.

Food was OK, I wouldn't say exceptional and the service was good, but not good enough to warrant a service charge. Not in Hemel Hempstead. And for this there is the option to leave a tip if you're happy with the service. The laminate / veneer in the table was chipped, the waiter was dressed in chinos. For a meal out in Hemel is OK, bit different than chain restaurants, so I would rate it 4 stars if it wouldn't be for the service charge...in Hemel

Mothers day set menu was a rip off. All items costed less on the main menu which you were allowed to order from. Service was very slow. Got my kids order wrong. No apology. 👎- food tasted OK.

Lovely restaurant, amazing food, very friendly staff

The food - beautifully presented and tasted good. The service….? We had to ask to be served for drinks, then waited around half an hour, and had to ask for someone to BRING us our drinks that had been sat on the bar for a good 5 mins. Then asked if we could order food. The waitress did not know the menu, nor what a j20 drink was and so had to copy from reading the menu every order from a table of 5. We ordered starters and mains, which again took a VERY long time to come. One of our mains came WITH the starters. Very odd. Then another long wait for mains, at which point one person had no main or their sides (they’d be left off) and one of us had finished our starter and main that came together! They completely missed off the order despite the waitress taking an age to write it all down! Really shocking. No service to check on our drinks etc… and when we explained our issue it took a long time to sort. We ended up cancelling the person who did not get their order, and asking for the bill. You guessed it, it took a LONG time. They DID knock off the service charge and the price of pizza and fries that never came so every cloud. Such a shame as the food that did arrive was beautifully presented and couldn’t fault it at all. The rest? :/

It's a wonderful looking restaurant with a lot of room. Although there's a lot of seating, you seem to have a lot of room to yourselves. The staff are kind and welcoming they all welcome you warmly as they pass. Once you've experienced all of this, then the food come the pièce de résistance! It's all cooked to perfection with flavours to wow you and it looks the part too 👌🏽 I'll be back very very soon!

A dreadful experience. Denied details of our booking despite our showing confirmation on a phone. Bit of a wait to take out drinks and starter orders but tbf the food was fine. Then, well over an hour for the main courses to arrive. Only then when queried and as if by magic the food appeared within minutes.... ? The duck waz grey, hard and overcooked and thr portions miserabke. Bever again

4 stars only because place itself is beautiful, there was live music on Sunday...but we were waiting extremely long(an hour +)for the food and restaurant wasn't too busy... Food was OK, mushroom soup was a bit of disappointment... Would I come here again? No, if only for something simple like drink and atmosphere...😊

For a cafe the food is OK, for a restaurant the food was not so. Nothing our group ordered was anything like the pictures we have all seen and was hoping for. The majority of food was over seasoned and my nice firm veg was so over garlic seasoned it felt like it was burning my mouth, and sadly I couldn't get a goodnight kiss from my granddaughter due to my breath. It took 10 minutes to get the attention of a waiter for some mayonnaise for the childrens chips, and when it arrived it was labelled 'Happy Shopper £1' The service was sadly lacking and the worst I have experienced in Hemel. There is an automatic 10% service charge, and when paying by card you are offered the opportunity of adding a tip, something you may be tempted to do if you were not aware of the service charge. Very disappointed !

Very good food and good atmosphere. When I was there, the owner was also present and was serving customers, which is a fairly rare thing to see. He made sure everything was good and the food and drink suggestions he had were spot on. All in all, would definitely recommend.

Forgot to take photos of the starters but enjoyed the mackerel pate and my husband had a delicious pork bao. I had vegan cumin butternut main which was lovely and husband had a lamb jalfrezi burger which he found a little salty and dry but still very nice. The waiter was so lovely to our young baby, bringing her something to play with. Nice mojito too. Very glad this place is in Hemel. Definitely worth a visit. Gorgeous presentation.

We were Delightfully treated, accommodated gladly although we didn’t book ahead, food was beautiful, well done Claudio. My favourite was the halloumi fries in sesame and sweet chill.

We are vegetarian and the menu was great for us. We had a houmous with bruchetta as a sharing dish + a mushroom risotto + goats cheese burger. All cooked really nicely with great flavour. I'll be returning again!

Best value for money. Food is absolute delight

Came here as a group of six after hearing lots of good reviews about the food. They did not disappoint! I had the pork belly bao bun (as pictured), which was tender and full of flavour. My partner had the smoked mackerel pate which was really delicious! Very fishy but not overpowering. For my main course I had a dirty beef burger with sweet potato fries (pictured) which, again, was very tasty. Unfortunately what ruined the meal was the quality of the service. Throughout most of the meal the service was very average, with nobody checking part way through to see if we needed anymore drinks or if the food was okay. After our main dishes were cleared we waited half an hour for a dessert menu, which only came after we ended up asking for it. We then waited another 20 minutes for no one to take our dessert order. In the end we asked for the bill as we decided to get dessert elsewhere. Again, another 20 minutes or so after receiving the bill and we had to actively ask someone for the card machine. Service charge was automatically added so we asked for it to be removed. When the manager asked us what the problem was we explained that the service had been very lacking. His response was "I noticed you had been sitting there but some of our staff are in training so I wanted to see what they would do". This was not an acceptable excuse, as the customer should be top priority and the new staff could have been given a prompt from said manager. We remained polite and paid for our meal. This was a real shame as the food was delicious and the presentation impressive, however the quality of the service really let them down.

Personally, I wouldn’t waste my time coming here again. Food was enjoyable but the service was completely lack lustre so much to the extent that I wouldn’t recommend it to a friend. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere 👍

Drove from Newbury based on a recommendation and I can say that everything is absolutely flawless! The staff were very attentive and I was so very pleased to find out that the owners were actually working and came to greet us, and run through the menu with us. The food is exceptional and the presentation and taste was out of this world! So glad ive been and cant wait to go back in the new year! For everyone who is reading this, please give it a go if you havent been yet!

This is a great place for a Christmas party, we had ours there and it was fantastic. The food was very enjoyable and the service was lovely with friendly staff ensuring that every one was well looked after. The atmosphere was great, we all had a great night out. Delicious food with well balanced flavours. The chef demonstrated creativity & style in the dishes we ordered. Good venue & good service. Adequately priced with good portions. Reasonable number of vegetarian options. I would request more sauce with the cauliflower steak (which was delicious) & more wine options please. Would have given 4.5 stars but no such option. Will be going back to try other dishes on the menu.

Deserts offered before mains, ice rationing in drinks, wrong bill, right bill wrong drinks, no loo roll in ladies...great pianist though and staff trying very hard. Give them a chance. My favourite restaurant in Hemel. I always look forward to going back. The food is phenomenal and service is second to none. Can’t wait to go back. I recommend to all my family and friends to visit. Took my husband for the first time tonight and he loved as well. This time I had the dirty burger and halloumi fries and it was amazing. The best halloumi fries I have ever had! Ever! The last time I had the Kofta burger and onion rings. Can’t wait to try another dish. This place an absolute gem!
