Not the best of pubs I’ve been to, not much atmosphere. Had a pint of Moretti and didn’t taste like it normally should, also smelt weird, like vinegar. So decided to pop up to the other pub up the road which had a nicer feel and also better tasting Morreti pint. Lady behind the bar was friendly though.

Food was just OK person with me couldn’t cut the beef it was so tough, veg was nice. Vegetarian option they had nothing available except the nut roast, was clearly frozen and put in microwave, was tasteless. Tables were sticky with cracks they need a good rubbing down, not clean at all taps in bathroom thick with baked on grime, needs a decent cleaner and viakal. The birds are in a draftly doorway please Move them inside they will get sick. Staff are great though very friendly and welcoming especially the lovely lady behind the bar on Sunday.

This is my local. I love the staff - they are always so very friendly and accommodate food choices wherever they can. The Hampshire Magician Sean Boon runs a quiz the first and third Wednesday of the month and it's always fun. Last night was outstanding with a bunch of new people involved - it was such a laugh. Plus we won! Our share of the winnings will be going to the donkey sanctuary. It's so lovely to see Sophie and co doing well - they certainly work hard enough! Great evening had by all.

A truly hideous and neglected dive, this pub really is a disgrace and should be closed down. Our visit ended in us leaving when the landlady announced that they didn’t have any food. We arrived at around 1pm on a Sunday afternoon, hungry and looking forward to a nice pub-lunch. We’ve never been to the Maypole prior, and we will never return. On entering, the place looks tired, poorly cared for and unclean - a family were sat at a table eating fish & chips from paper wrappers, and we sat sheepishly at a table, having not been welcomed or spoken to. We waited for menus, until in the end, the family at the table passed some to us. It was a disappointment, with barely any choice other than pie and mash, fish and chips or burgers. The landlady seemed too busy dealing with old drinkers propping up the bar, with no attention to her guests. No Sunday lunch, no comprehensive menu - poor service, but we decided to order the burgers - only to find that they didn’t have any left! That was enough for us, we upped and walked out. This place is a disaster, and a disgusting excuse for a pub. Dated, unclean, inefficient and poorly run. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

We had lunch here, the food was ok but nothing to rave about. One thing urgently needed is that the place needs a good deep clean, went to the toilet, and it was awful. The sink was shocking and cobwebs everywhere. It looked like it never got cleaned. The table was so sticky, and the vinegar had things floating in it. If we hadn't already placed a food order, I would have walked out. Sadly, I wouldn't return.

Took a chance based on all the good reviews, ordered the sirloin steak for both of us medium rare and got it in very well done. My wief being the nice person she is accepted it and ate halfof her steak whilst I sent mine out and got back something very well done on the surface and raw in the middle. Just got tired of it, ate it and left. Chef would do well to practice a bit more with his cooking. Waitress who brought the second one for me thought she was funny saying that the chef left this one alive. As it was the most expensive course on the menu I expected more. Not even average and will not be back.

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch at The Maypole with my husband and 2 daughters on Bank Holiday Sunday. We were visiting the area and wanted a lovely roast so booked this pub online because of good reviews. Totally agree with the 5 star ratings. We were greeted with smiles & given our table and menus. Staff were happy, welcoming & knowledgeable on the food and drinks available. My youngest had fish goujons, chips and peas and the size of the meal was great - could have suited an adult even! Children's roast equally great size! We had 2 adult roasts and they were good sizes and flavoursome. Definitely cooked perfectly! Would absolutely come back again if we were in the area again and would recommend a friend too. The pub was quirky & traditional rolled into one. Thank you for a lovely meal!

Due to all the good reviews we thought we would try Sunday roast. Bitterly disappointed with the whole experience and it will never be repeated despite living on the island. We booked for 4pm. The roast potatoes and stuffing ball had clearly been kept warm somewhere for hours and if I had attempted to eat them would have broken my teeth. The roast parsnips (two pieces) were rubbery, the one piece of carrot the same. There was a pile of mushy cabbage and green beans in the same state, and the pork may have been ok had it not been cut in doorsteps. I can honestly say the best bits were the crackling (which only gets better if its cooked to death) and gravy. Also what is going on with the decor? Carpets and wall coverings have seen far better days, sticky tables. The barmaid talked to some people at the bar for practically the whole of the time we were there apart from when she bought our food, I couldn't help thinking she could have made better use of her time by cleaning some of the window cills and getting rid of dead flowers - I was itching to get my hands on a duster and give it all a good clean! Also in the entrance hallway there is a cage with a couple of parakeets who have managed to make a terrible mess all over the floor with their seed that you can't help but walk through the pub. Very strange set up indeed.

Booked a table for 6 people online for easter sunday only to get there and be told they didn't see our booking as there booking system is down. The rude woman who works there wanted to squeeze us onto a 4 seater table with no room for a high chair to be put at the end, I said we won't all fit around that table and asked if we could have the bigger table next to it, she replied no as that's for people who've got a reservation!! I had a reservation also! She then replied well you can leave if want! Such a shame to have staff like that as I really liked this pub the first time I went there, but because of her I will never go back. But thanks also, as we ended up having the nicest roast at the Inn on the beach, with a beautiful view and staff that actually smile 😃

Despite having family on the island this was the first time we had been to the Maypole. We came here with 3 elderly relatives (85+) who had booked a table for 5 people. We sat down at our table and it took a long while for us to have our order taken - which is fine. But after that it took another good 45 minutes before had our starters and another 45 for our main meals. The staff were apologetic but they said that there were two other tables who also ordered food at the same time, which was why it was taking longer. If it wasn’t for our elderly relatives, who were having trouble staying awake by the time they got their food, it wouldn’t have been an issue. I think perhaps the establishment could do with more kitchen staff - since meals for 3 tables shouldn’t have taken as long as it did. The food itself was perfectly pleasant but not so good that we will be returning in the near future, I’m afraid.

Arrived at opening time, greeted by a cosy open fire, staff & service could not be faulted. We had a group of 8 adults (5 different menu choices) and could not fault any of the food. The fish & chips was particularly good as was the burger, 3 of our group had the pie, mash & liqueur (ex londoners) and were all surprised at the quantity and quality, all said it was the best they have had in years. Could not fault anything on our visit, will happily return. Good luck to the new tenants, you deserve to have much success.

We were drawn into the Maypole by the sign out front advertising Sophies Pie Mash and Liquor. We were a party of 4 and we all had a different main. Three had pie and one the mussels. There were about 20 mussels on the plate - hardly more than a starter portion anywhere else. The pies were OK. The deep filled pie was filled with good quality steak and kidney The traditional London mince pies were mostly mushy beef mince. The pastry was hard on the top. The mash was unseasoned and just that. Mashed potato. It was bitty and not creamy at all. The worst bit was to follow. We asked for liquor and 3 jugs of gravy. The liquor was gloopy and not appetising at all and were served up in small gravy boats. I asked for another as the two pies needed more. When the bill arrived we had been charged 2x £2 for the egg-cup sized amounts of 'extra' gravy. Outrageous! Needless to say we will not be returning.

We tried several places on Hayling to get a Sunday roast but everywhere was fully booked. Leaving Hayling we stumbled across the Maypole. We entered and were glad to be told they were serving food and as the place was very quiet we got a table. The first impression was a damp table cloth (odd in a pub)which made the menu and napkins wet. We were going to move but all the cloths were damp. We ordered and within a few minutes are lunch arrived which always a worrying sign. The roast: potatoes quite good, 2 slices of meat was a bit mean, the vegetables were ever frozen or just over cooked as very mushy. We ordered the optional pigs in blankets, nice bacon but the sausage was mushy with no substance. For £16 plus the extras this is up there price wise with some great roasts so sadly will not be returning. The final annoyance was a radio playing, who wants to listen to adverts while eating. This review is meant to be constructive criticism that will help the mangers tweak things for the positive of the business.

A really poor visit, which as an Islander disappoints me as I very much want this historic venue to succeed. We visited early on a Friday lunchtime to avoid any rush which worked as it was very quiet. We ordered 2 of Sophie's pies, one with mash and one with chips. Both arrived with mash and so we asked which was which so we knew which was wrong. Although the pies were different shapes the server did not know the difference between the pies. We took a chance and sent one back to replace the mash by chips. The dish came back within 2 minutes with overcooked chips barely warm, clearly not fresh. We both started our meals and both pies being very cool, not cold but certainly not hot. My mash was the same. When asked if everything ok we said no. Replacement meals were offered but declined as already we had sent 1 back. A refund of the food parts of our order were offered and accepted. A 3-5 days process to return was stated but after 11 days nothing has been received. This was a really disappointing experience.

Left Hayling Island 8 years ago but returned today for a walk down memory lane and it lead me to Mike's Kitchen. Wonderful people, perfect food and beautiful crockery at a very reasonable price. I forgot to mention the location is great and the choice of seating areas are outstanding.
