Matane Sushi in Norwich

Decent sushi and rolls with decent prices.

I ordered via their online website. Paid. Walked to the shop and it was closed. Apparently they are on holiday. We all need a break. But taking peoples money and getting them to walk to your establishment, only to find it isn't open is despicable behaviour. And to top it off, there is no one and no way to get my money back. Mantane Sushi should be ashamed of themselves. Dishonest time wasters. UPDATE - the owners assertion that I wasn’t charged is incorrect. I’ve looked at my account and the money has been taken. And it wasn’t an inconvenience. It was a massive disappointment for myself and my family. And now I have to spend time chasing for a refund. Blaming a third party just isnt good enough. ADDITIONAL UPDATE - I waited until they had reopened after their holiday. Note I had no cog ice as they have no way of getting in touch other than by phone. And when I do call, I find I still can’t get my money back. Apparently I have to talk with the owner, Andy, who is on holiday, and can’t be contacted for another 2 days. Fascinating that Andy will take time to reply to a review, but won’t take to the time to reconcile the issues associated with the review. Now I have to spend more time chasing a refund. Disgraceful behaviour that could have been avoided, initially by checking the system and then by working to get a resolution.

Great restaurant for takeaway sushi, prices are reasonable and is always served quickly, haven't had any issues.

Always top quality quick and fresh sushi served here. It’s a shame it is not a restaurant or a bigger cafe as the small tables laid out are not really attractive to eat at but the food and service is always top notch.

I heard it was opened by Chinese people so I came to try it. I bought three boxes, but the fish and sashimi were not very fresh and were average.

I love Sushi and have eaten in all the Japanese restaurants in Norwich. Although Matane has a very different vibe, cafe/take away, their Sushi in my opinion is the Best.

Love this sushi place! Excellent tasting sushi, fresh and cooked on the day. Clean place. Great service and staff. Really nice atmosphere and enjoyed the music playing in the background. Really good price too. Definitely recommended.

The sushi is ok for an Asia like me, service is very good. The environment is just so so, but understand this is mainly a takeaway restaurant. It is recommendable.

The sushi is not bad for the price but not sure about the hyginene. Looks like they never clean the window since open. I can't imagine the cleanliness of the chopping board.

I am a customer for 3 years. I love Matane but this time oh boy the tuna on my sushi was bad... texture bad, taste bad and smell bad... the funiest of all is on my Dragon roll they did place so much fish eggs to cover how bad the tuna looked... bad bad experience and I did call back to complain but no one answered the phone.. not a nice experience for a customer who is loyal and comes back even week for Sunday dinner.

Just collected my order and was annoyed to discover that a few items that I had been paid for were missing Annoyed, I phoned to see what they could do Upon calling I was really shocked at their reaction Upon learning of the missing items the guy did not apologise he just laughed and said 'Oh this often happens its really easy to forget to put items like this in the bag' Somewhat taken a back I explained that this was not not good enough and asked what they intended to do about it. 'Well nothing really' was the response I was not expecting, 'unless you want to come back to the shop and collect it' Not wanting to to drive 10 miles back into Norwich I said this was not practical and asked if they could just refund the missing items back onto my credit card. They were not even prepared to do that! I understand mistakes happen but their unsympathetic, cavalier attitude makes me think that this might happen a little too often... Buyer beware!

This sushi was some of the freshest I've eaten. The salmon/tuna sashimi is thick cut and super tasty. Although I didn't eat inside, there are a fair number of tables and what seemed to be a decent playlist. I would highly recommend Matane Sushi, it's reasonably priced and has fast service (especially if you order the larger platters in advance). I'll definitely be back!

Just ordered sashimi for lunch via Deliveroo. The Tuna Sashimi was not remotely fresh, both mushy to the touch and taste. The Salmon Sashimi also smelled very strongly. Threw it all in the bin after one bite. This is a shame as we have had great sushi in the past from here but won't be ordering again.

Some of the highest quality Japanese food I’ve ever had. The sushi I had was so delicious and fresh. The gyozas are steamed and the definitely the best I’ve had out of anywhere I’ve been. The staff were patient, helpful and kind. Would highly recommend dining in or picking up food from here!

Really yummy food and really friendly people! I popped in around 4.30-5 yesterday (Monday) and I was the only person eating in. There were a couple of other people who popped in for takeout while I was there and the staff were just as polite to them as they were to me. The food was absolutely delish, I had salmon maki, wakame salad (seaweed salad) and the chap in the kitchen made me some inarizushi as there wasn’t any on the shelf. Everything was fresh, it was tasty, and the place was clean as well. The only thing I’d suggest to improve this place would be to get some little soy sauce dipping dishes, as I had to put the soy sauce in the lid of one of the containers (I prefer to dip rather than squirt the soy sauce over the top), but let’s face it that’s a preference and not a ‘must have’. Will definitely be back next time I’m in Norwich! Advice for anyone planning to eat there - there’s only 8 seats inside and 2 outside so be prepared to grab takeout and sit somewhere nice with that if the place is full. Also always ask if what you want isn’t in the fridges - they’re really friendly and happy to make up what you want if they’ve got it in.

I came to this place after hearing good things about it. In reality, every single word is less than this place deserves! One of the best sushi place I've been to! Still licking my fingers. Variety of dishes (including dumpling), excellent+++ food. You just want more! Don't dare missing it. Dine in, order or take away. Amazing! Ohhh, and don't skip the cheesecake mochi as a desert!

Really tasty the first time I tried sushi from here (although the custard pancake packaging had fish juice on it, lol). Today, I ordered on deliveroo and waited for 45 mins to be told that Matane Sushi was closed when the rider arrived to collect it? Why have it available on deliveroo if it's closed? Really disappointing.

I used to love this place as the quality price ratio it’s quite good. Usually order delivery but as I was in the city I decided to go in and order a party mix, but the server rolled his eyes at me and didn’t acknowledge I was by the till, I work in the industry myself so I’ve cut in some slack thinking he was having a bad day and grabbed a few things that where already boxed. Had them to eat inn and this review it’s for the managers/ owner, not shore if you are aware of the situation but you will loose a lot of guests with these attitudes. The store had hard metal music loudly playing, that was 3 staff members talking to each other swearing and saying the ‘allergy of working in this place’ was kicking inn, a elder couple came to have some miso soups they were so discomfortable with the music and how loud it was , sad reality how the wrong staff can take a place down. I don’t usually leave reviews but it seems to me that is an urgent matter that managers are aware of why maybe sales been dropping.

My two teenagers love Matane Sushi. They sometimes get their lunch in there, and they recommend it to us. My friend from Ipswich visited yesterday (Saturday) and we dropped by at Matane for lunch. We loved it! So this morning (Sunday), I thought I would treat my family with the XL Platter. We were told to wait for 25 minutes, which was fine. Whilst we were waiting, a delivery driver came and was told to wait 10 minutes. This driver said that he was told 10mins ago to wait for 10 minutes. Then a woman named Helen replied back that it was not 10mins yet and that they could not give the exact time to the driver. The driver showed Helen something in the app that says about the time, and Helen started shouting to the driver. She was arguing with the driver at the top of her voice. She even asked the driver for his name, and the driver answered calmly. The driver never said a word after that. But Helen kept on and on about it, shouting to the driver! She even told the driver not to come back there! She was very rude to the driver! And after a while, I was so fed up listening to her going on and on and never stopped shouting, I intervened and said for her to shut up! It was not a very nice atmosphere for customers to hear her shouting at the driver! There was even another delivery driver waiting. I get her point that you cannot give exact time for drivers but you can say it in a professional manner. Just because they are drivers, you will treat them differently? Bear in mind that they are delivering what your customers have ordered. I was so appalled by the attitude. I don't care if you are the owner or manager. You shouldn't shout in front of customers. All you need to say to the driver is "Sorry, it's taking along time as we have other orders as well." That's easy, isn't it! For sure, drivers also have target times to deliver the food. Staff should have proper training and control their anger. Appalling conduct! But despite that scenario, we have enjoyed the platter. Just not fair to experience that kind of rudeness. The other staff apologised to us though, but not Helen! Even the driver said sorry to us. So sorry to post this kind of review but I don't tolerate rudeness and I will speak up for anyone that's being abused! #bekind

sushi is average also the wasabi provided is out of date!

It's a pop in for collection place with a table inside if you want to pay extra to sit. Best sushi in Norwich if you can't stump up for fine dining. Never going to yo sushi again.

Whilst I would generally recommend Matane Sushi, I have to give then a lower score / less than positive review based on my experience with them today. I popped into their shop and asked for some fresh sushi to be made. They refused to do this telling that all the sushi on display had been there for less than 15 minutes (which seemed unlikely looking the dishes on display). True or not, as a customer I have the right to ask for fresh food, and in my experience top quality sushi places will always prepare fresh food on request - hence a critical review in this instance. I hope I’ll be able to give better feedback after my next visit

Very disappointed, we visited last night to get some sushi and we were told a platter would take 25 minutes to prepare. Given all ingredients were made and there were three or four members of staff not doing much, this felt like an incredibly long time and we got the feeling they just didn't want to make the food as we were encouraged to get something from the fridge. Also the music they were playing was far too loud, and even though we asked it to be turned down we still struggled to communicate with the person serving us. We took the sushi away in the end as the atmosphere was not a friendly or welcoming one. That said the sushi itself was ok!

A frequent lunch spot of mine. Great sushi every time, you can see it being made freshly through out the day. Reasonably priced and a great spot to grab a light lunch to take away.

This was a new experience for me in Norwich during our family visit. Sashimi/Sushi take-out or sit-in place on Castle Meadow, virtually across from Bell Hotel. The sashimi and sushi was beautifully made and tasted gorgeous, fresh and top notch. I would definitely give it 5 stars for the food, highly recommended! Please do not forget this is hole in the wall establishment, you are there for the food not the seating arrangement.

Best sushi place in UK! Hands down! I moved 2 years ago to a different University and I still thing about this place! The guy who I think is the owner is really sweet as well! Highly recommend

I'm absolutely obsessed with the Salmon Lover and Combo Salmon menu deals which include Maki, Crunchy Salmon, Sashimi and Spicy Salmon - they're now my go to takeaway choice! The sushi is insanely tasty, so fresh and well worth the money. The wasabi tube is the hottest wasabi I've ever had, but so delicious! Highly recommend Matane sushi.

Took the kids here after a visit to the Theatre on Sunday, they crazed me for sushi. It was quite expensive to eat in and no concessions for kids deals or blue light card, so might have to be Yo Sushi next time. The salmon selection was nice, the kids aren’t huge fans of sashimi though. I’d like to have not to had to use so much single use plastic, a bottle of soy sauce would have been better.

Last night we ordered sushi from Matane sushi. We will never eat here again! When we walked in we were told that if there is no sushi on display which we like, we can order from the menu. We ordered 2x Salmon Crunch Roll and 1x Dragon Roll. Dragon Roll was ok. Unfortunately, Salmon Crunch Roll was awful. Instead of proper salmon we got salmon skin and worst salmon bits. It was so bad that we couldn't eat it, so we had to take all salmon from the sushi. If you don't want to waste your money and be disappointed avoid this place!!!

So fresh and absolutely amazing flavour. If you love sushi go try this for sure.
