The master fryer has been closed for a while and is now a mobility shop, so if you are after fish and chips your out of luck if your looking for a mobility scooter and helpful tools for easier living then come here.

Filthy eatery, expensive with very poor food. Unfriendly staff milling around complete with dead flies on the window cills, what's not to like? Please do yourselves a favour and eat elsewhere, ANYWHERE but here.

Absolutely vile avoid at all costs fish was like dough too thick batter chicken burger was rock hard and the batter sausage had something in it looks like maggot and tomato sauce was pink and vinegary DO NOT EAT IN HERE chips were burnt and cooked in old oil

The lady who served us was nice but the food was not. Very poor and very expensive. Annoying to pay over the odds for such poor food. The red sauce is worth a mention ... it was pink! We didn’t let our kids eat it. Avoid

We ordered 2 cod and chips and 2 teas - cost £20! This would have been okay if food was top quality but it was far from that. The 2 cod fillets we’re identical to one another and made from re-constituted white fish, like you buy in cheap supermarkets. Portion of chips was measly. Tacky surroundings to sit in and eat. Staff grumpy. Steer clear of this place and buy fresh fish and chips on seafront.

We stopped for a plate of chips to go. They had no taste whatsoever. We threw them straight in the bin and went somewhere else. We would never go back. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

Popped in last weekend for take away fish and chips and then went down to the sea front to eat them. Really friendly staff and great fish and chips too. Well cooked and tasted amazing. Relaxing and eating by the beach what more can you ask for?

We found this restaurant by chance, a very nice warm welcome from the staff. We ordered Cod and chips with a pot of tea. The food was excellent, the tea great and the service perfect. We asked why it was not busy on a Friday night, the waitress said that the previous owners had a few bad reviews and they had not been given a chance yet to prove themselves. If you are in the area, try them out.

It has reopened with a new and very enthusiastic team, at the moment Waiting for a liquor license ( BYO ) we ate there last night and found The owners and staff extremely keen to please, with a few tweaks and Advice, my word, you will get excellent cooking and fabulous service, give it a try. This could well be the spot in Exmouth for an extremely well cooked and Diverse meal with fantastic service at a price that will make you return Meal for 4 freshly cooked and delicious just over £50, Go on give it a try

We ordered fish, chips, and mushy peas with a pot of tea, and ate them in the restaurant. The fish was good with tasty crisp batter, the chips were lovely, and the mushy peas were a bit different being mashed garden peas with mint - really gorgeous!. The meal was served with a big wedge of lemon and a pot of delicious home made tartare sauce. It was great value and we enjoyed it so much we went back the next day for the same again, before heading home from our weekend in Exmouth. The business is under new management and run by a family who made us very welcome.

Where to start?? Takeaway fish and chips really isn’t difficult! Is it? The empty shop had about 6 family/staff members just stood loitering around making the atmosphere unpleasant. 5 minutes after ordering and the woman disappearing out back I was told they didn’t have the haddock I wanted so was cod ok. The chip portions are small and they were undercooked. The also undercooked cod was in something that they must think is batter, I could of used it as glue in its liquid state. Soggy, thick and not crispy at all and no flavour. Then to top it off was charged £2 for a can of soft drink!! A can!! Won’t be back again that’s for sure I’d rather let my 3 year old cook for me!

chips tasted reheated, pie was like a rock, chicken nuggets were rubbery battered sausage tasted funny (as my daughter said) and the tomato ketchup if you could call it that was like transparent pink goo. the menu was grubby as well as the window sill next to where we were eating, it was covered in sort and dead flies ect. also prices were ridiculous £36 for 5 of us 3 were kids meals and it was £10 for 5 drink cans!

We went to Exmouth shopping for the day, and we fancied some fish and chips, and we found the Master Fryer. So in we go and ordered fish and chips for two. When it arrived at the table it look reasonably until you started to eat it the fish had more batter than fish and the chip were disgusting they had been reheated, we didn’t even eat half of the meal, waste of money.

We went here for lunch and very soon realised that we had made a terrible error. The food was tepid; the chips either rock hard or mushy and the various fish seemed undercooked. I commented as such to the owner a received a reply not printable here.

I don't normal leave reviews but everything was so bad that it had to be done. Firstly it was our mistake for not walking straight back out as soon as we walked in and smelt the rotten chip fat! Secondly after we were seated I needed the toilet. We should have grabbed our things and scampered after seeing the state of the loo. But being the polite British kind that we are we stayed. The food is of the worst kind I've ever tasted. I have never tasted chips that bad in my life. The fish tbf wasnt too bad. But it wasn't fresh as advised. The place just reeked of old dirty chip fat. The decor, tired and dated. I didn't dare put my daughter in the high chair. And well don't get me started on the price! It cost £18.50 for two cans of pepsi, 2 portions of frozen chips, a pie and piece of fish. They certainly saw us coming!! Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs..

Had lunch here last week and ordered a small doner kebab. It was £5.00 and came with lots of salad and tons of meat. It was very tasty. I would not class this as a restaurant but a fish and chip shop with seats. I did not find it dirty or expensive, the food was tasty and the owner was very nice to me. I would definitely recommend the kebabs.

Fish was over cooked and frozen not fresh as advertised. Staff didn't speak much English . Chips were raw and no flavour. Very expensive £ 20.00 for Two. Won't ever go back.

Inmediatamente tomó mis manos fuera del mostrador cuando me pareció que estaba pegajosa. El lugar parece muy viejo y sucio, realmente no estoy seguro de cómo sigue abierto si soy honesto.

Decided to try there fish and chips last night on the way to the beach I normally go to krispies or capels and never been disappointed but last night they both had queues out the doors so decided to try master fryer Bad move !! I'm not from Exmouth but walked into this place lunchtime this week and said hello to the young lady behind the counter but got no response.I asked for plaice but was given cod.After pointing out the mistake you could hear the sighs from the staff.Wanted to sit down but it was wrapped up to take away.Asked for pepper but told abruptly don't have it.Anyway I did sit down and wish I hadn't as it was clear this place was a mess.Dead plants in the corners,dirty children high chair,and furniture that was looked like it was pulled from a house fire.Even the clocks had stopped which gives you an image of what this shop is like.They even had the nerve to put one of those ghastly"we thank you for your custom"boxes on the counter and even that was stained.It is clear this place is ready to close so why is still allowed to trade ?Devon Council please sort this place out !!

Firstly the bloke who served was just plain rude. The fish was tiny and the batter was what I'd expect from a battered sausage not a fish. The word fish is a loose term, I'm not sure it had ever been in the water. Chips were ok. Probably the worst fish and chips I've ever had and coming from Salisbury that takes some doing.

Everything was good apart from the fried mushrooms as they were way too oily. Also had to walk to the end of the road to meet the driver as they couldn't find the house but apart from that everything was good, would eat here again

Pity you can't give minus stars for this place, chips where the scraping of the barrel, fish batter was so bad I can't even think of the words to put here, coffee was instant even though we paid for ground. Exmouth council you need to close this place down now it gives your town a bad image.

The meal was atrocious. Absolutely no taste to the garlic bread, the chicken nuggets were covered in grease, the kebab meet was as thin as a sheet of paper and the chips were undercooked. Most definitely not impressed, terrible value for money and I will never be eating there again!

I worked here last summer , which as a first job i though would be good. I was completely wrong and it was horrible to be there the very little time i was. The owner smokes and drinks on the premises illegally and also in the kitchen around the food. After dropping food on the floor he would continue to serve it to the customers , once i saw this i couldn't believe my eyes. Not only this he would give another girl money there as tell her ' treat yourself, buy something special' which is not right for an older man to be saying to a 15 year old girl. Finally after being insulted , grabbed and made cry in front of a customer i never returned. I wish I done something before hand and went to the police , but please do not risk going here...

I wish I had read these reviews before eating at the 'master fryer' which they most certainly aren't! I was in Devon recently and visited exmouth town to shop around a bit. Me and my family went to the master fryer to try some seaside fish and chips. Always exciting when you are right by the sea. I ordered four meals , three fish and chips and one child's meal. £24...£24!!! I couldn't believe my ears when the 'owner' said this was the cost he tried to get me to buy drinks too which would have cost more than likely £30 in total. Never heard of a fish and chip shop to cost so much so I thought we must have come to a brilliant place for them to charge so much. We decided to eat in and were the only family which was strange considering it was lunchtime but this thought didn't enter my head at the time I was more looking forward to this £24 meal. After 15 mins of waiting the waiter brought over four tiny plates with fish that I could eat within a few bites, it certainly didn't look like it would taste great. I was right. The chips were hard and the fish batter was soggy, too much batter so little fish. The tomato ketchup was pink...? Never seen that before in my life. My son squeezed it all over his chips but never ate them as it tasted funny. I left most of my meal as did the rest of my family and we all felt completely ripped off. The waiter came back to take our plates asking if everything was ok I wish I had told him now how disgusting their meals are and they should be am shamed to charge so much but I was so dissapointed I just shrugged my shoulders and got up to leave. I loved visiting Devon and will most likely visit again, but I will never set foot in this rip off 'master fryer' ever again and I hope people read these reviews and decide to not go there. You will only be disappointed and with a lot less money in your pocket. This place needs shutting down!

Although in the centre of town, this place is rarely open. I asked the staff about some of their products, and they said they hadn't tried any of the ones I asked for. I had scampy and chips. The Scampy was overcooked, and the chips were a mixture of raw, overcooked or green. It wasn't particularly cheap either. No one in the town has anything good to say about it. I don't often write poor review, but this place stands out.

I've eaten there twice, firstly I had sausage and chips and I don't remember it exactly but I was hungry so it was edible. The second time was today and I ordered a cheeseburger and chips and my mum the cod and chips and that came to £12 something however we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, they have big portions and although the chips weren't as soft as I'd like they were not something I'd complain about, I couldn't fault the burger and my mum continued to say throughout how nice her fish was. I cannot explain the other negative reviews but maybe they've taken onboard complaints, an enjoyable dinner!

The waiting staff were simply rude, and impatient for people whose job is to wait! And the food? That's disgusting! The fish was like brains, the chips were like bullets! They did fried eggs, my favourite, no justice. And the worst part? Bits of the food got stuck in my moustache! Not even remotely satisfied, I threw a temper tantrum before storming out of the building without paying!So in conclusion, do not eat here! This review is a warning, not a promotion! I hate that restaurant!

"Dire" would be the only word to describe our cod and chips lunch. It was totally inedible and we do wonder whether it was even cod! The batter was thick and doughy and the chips stale and cold. The restaurant only had two others seated (despite being lunch time) and they also were complaining about their cold poor quality food. The coffee also left a lot to be desired - it smelt of the old "Camp" coffee but at barista prices. The food and coffees were terrible and not even cheap. We walked out without paying a penny admittedly and the poor waiter could not apologise enough (not that it was his fault but that of the "fryer" and/or owner). Never again!

We went there out of curiosity and lack of other f&ch opened at 3pm. There were 4 of us including 2 under 5yr toddlers-you'd think perfect clientele-they were dreaming of chips with ketchup and a fishcake. What a flippin disappointment. After one chip with something, that didn't even stand next to tomato, they said it's DISGUSTING(reminder: under 5yr old toddlers)!!! And very true it was. I ordered sparkling water-they said they have only still. I said fine. Nobody mentioned it's tap water in a dirty glass...I could go on and on...Don't go there!!!

It's dark. It's drizzly. It's depressing. It's Exmouth in August....I needed some food, nothing basic, something simple for one and stumbled on this place. I was the only person in a restaurant which could seat fifty, and this at 7.45 in high season. To be fair the service was quick, not particularly friendly, personable or welcoming, but fast. £8 for cod and chips, mushy peas and a cup of tea. Reasonable value but the food was at best average; greasy batter, cheap ketchup but the chips were okay. No follow up service once I had been served, I was left alone. No cards accepted which is unusual these days, but there you go. The meal fulfilled its purpose but I could not really endorse a recommendation.

there were 11 of us who wanted to have some decent fish & chips... and I can't actually believe the service we received. The staff were rude and unhelpful, and the fire alarm went off. Instead of telling us what to do all the staff walked in the opposite direction. Then it stopped and they didn't even apologise for the interruption to our meal. DO NOT GO THERE. Its not nice and not worth the money at all. Plus the manager was angry at us for not having change, at the end of the day if you only accept cash expect to get notes!!!!!

How hard can it be to do basic fish and chips? Rung up off their new menu which was delivered through the door. That looked so much better I assumed it may have changed hands. really nice looking from the out side, clean inside, there were 6 of us who ordered food the lasagna was from a packet and microwaved, the gammon was like card board and tasted of onion, the egg white was gloopy and under cooked. the senior citizen of cod and chips the cod had a large bones in and when i told the waitress she asked me what was she suppose to do about it in a very arrogant manner. then bought over 2 more pieces of fish at no extra cost. the chips were rock hard couldn't even squash with a fork. my son cut his lip on a glass that had a chip out of the rim. after complaining the staff didn't seem at all surprised. they knocked £10 off the bill.we all felt slightly ill afterwards. Massively over priced i went for Haddock £5 and chips £2.50 thinking for that price it must be great and very fresh, wrapped up tightly and hastily prepared the gentleman looked like he couldn't care less and wanted us out of the shop to close up. 7.30pm!?Went to the seafront absolutely starving after a sea swim, opening up the wrapper to find a limp soggy, cold, grey looking, small piece of fish. and undercooked disgusting chips. If i wasnt so hungry i would have been back there in a shot. but just about stomached the meal, to be struck with an evening of indigestion and nausea. Avoid at all costs.

We paid £12 for 2 portions of Fish & Chips, the chips were frozen and chucked into the fryer. The cod was small and chewy. I wouldn't go here again and I urge others not too! There are some great fish & chip shops in Exmouth. This is not one of them!

This place is one of those that looks like it should be good, but is disappointing. They cover virtually every cuisine imaginable for what is supposed to be a fish and chip shop i presume. Burgers, pizza, kebabs, lasagne, baked potato... And probably more that I have forgotten. We stuck to the traditional f and c. It was very disappointing, the chips soggy and the fish average. In the 30 or so minutes we were there, it wasn't busy which was quite a surprise given the location and the number of people about. Has potential, but could use a bit of a Ramsey make over!
