We have visited the Masons now twice for drinks. On our first visit, it was a busy Saturday afternoon the bar was understandably full and we had to wait quite a while to be served although this wasn't helped the older blond lady staff member stood at the end of bar for 5 - 10 minutes to have a chat with a friend rather than get some drinks orders though, the poor young man was juggling to try and get everyone sorted. We then visited again last weekend and stood for 10 minutes again at the bar whilst the blond woman stood at the back entrance smoking whilst everyone stood waiting with no service at all, upon her return she appeared annoyed we even wanted to order anything as if we had inconvenienced her. Locally I've been told similar stories as it sounds like she's part of the furniture and everyone just puts up with her attitude which is a shame as the pub is a great village local. We've never had the food but always looks nice.

Received a parking fine for failing to see the (badly) flagged registration hub. Despite providing credit card proof I had visited the pub, I was given short shrift from the car parking company. More disappointing was the response of the pub management when I asked if they might consider cancelling the fine, especially considering the fact that I am a fairly regular customer: they responded with ‘it’s out of our control.’ Needless to say, I’ll no longer been visiting.

Very difficult review to write because the people were so nice. so just the facts. We booked well in advance but initially were placed on a table in the middle of a very noisy bar. We were quickly and politely moved to the restaurant part upon request. We ordered a steak and stilton pie - this was overcooked and the stilton was invisible (burned?) and not apparent in the taste. I ordered a salmon Wellington. This was incinerated. It was too hard to cut and the top simply flaked all over . The contents were only identifiable by their dental records. I was kindly offered a homenade chicken jalfrezi and took it out of politeness. It was OK. In truth, I should have declined. As I say, the staff were tremendous, polite, efficient and friendly. The 'chef' came from the kitchen to apologise suggesting things slip through sometimes. We were given a free drink each to compensate, but in truth, it was a bit disastrous. I suspect that we ma have been unlucky and caught the cook on a bad night but felt it fair to offer an honest review. Nice atmosphere and lovely attentive people, but not able to recommend the food on this occasion.

Called in when passing by Pub was very busy managed to get a table in the upper bar area Good choice of food on the menu and a specials board offering a home made curry and pie. Unfortunatley they had run out of pie so settled for gammon chips peas and onion rings. Was very nice but cant really go wrong with gammon but food that was going out looked lovely. The pub is dog friendly and very popular with them Well worth the visit will be back

As it says this is a friendly local village pub. Two small rooms and four cask ales, standard pub food menu but done to a far higher standard than usual - the over-used (and inaccurate) phrase “home-cooked” is a good description of what we had. Best pub meal I’ve had this year, and very welcome after an incredibly dispiriting experience up the road.

Warm, cosy, inviting and relaxing, the Mason's Arms is the place to come to have a drink, chill out and enjoy yourself. They serve delicious food and offer a wide range of drinks, including a great selection of real ale. With the beamed ceilings and comfy chairs, and the welcoming, happy staff who always greet you with a smile, this is the place to come for a great time. The quizzes they do are loads of fun, too. Can't recommend the Mason's Arms enough. Brilliant!! Penang curry was good. However it was misserved with sweet potato fries rather than rice, which I had not requested. It’s a shame the starters are pricey relative to the mains. First choice of food was the pie but had none, second choice was cod but had none, third choice was scampi but of course they had none! Scampi was still written on the specials board! Had to settle for cod bites (which is a starter) but with chips and mushy peas. Waited quite a while for food to arrive, peas where stone cold, cod bites not very nice and chips were just ok, left most of it as had gone past being hungry! I did tell the staff when they collected the plate but they weren’t very concerned! I did not want to cause a fuss as one of the friends I was with had suggested this pub and would have been embarrassed. Will not be visiting again!

Both were delicious. This establishment is very dog friendly with dog beds and water bowls. The car park is tucked behind the pub and you need to go through a public car park to get to it. I would suggest that the pub needs to make urgent repairs or indeed completely resurface it's car park as it is in quite a poor state and is indeed in need of immediate maintenance for safety reasons alone.

Wednesday 3 July 12 noon. On entering there were only 2 people at the bar. Today we decided to sit in the lower bar as we normally go to the upper one. Easy to find a table as it was deserted, in the past there have always had customers. We sat down and looked at the menu. I decided for a change to go for the trio of sausages and my companion went for the gammon. It took 30 minuets to drive and didn't look too bad. We had noticed that a couple had come in some time after us and there food arrived well before ours. The sausages were quite good ,BUT they were only warm as were the chips which makes me think the 2 meals had been served up then forgotten about. On looking at the carpet it was well past being dirty, filthy sums it up, and to top that it had not been hoovered since the party last night as there was a lot of gold discs on the floor throughout the pub. Tables were clean. Has this place changed hands as it was certainly not up to the previous visits standards. May be a while before we return. Thats if we do !! 9th October 18 12.00. Today we both went for the mixed grill. Been a while since we had one. Ordered drinks and the meals and sat by the fire (un lit). The food came and looked very inviting, piping hot and well presented. Everything was good till we got to the rump steak, had a job to get the steak knife through it, seems a lot of sinew running through it. Never mind , the rest of the meal was spot on. All other meat well cooked, chips spot on and plenty of good peas. Gammon had a good taste and not salty and my favourite sausage had a good flavour thank goodness as i have had some very dubious sausages recently .We mentioned to the server that the steak was not up to their usual standard and he went to the kitchen. A few moments later the chef came to the table and was very apologetic and asked if there was anything he could do to put it right. We said no but my dog would have a good meal. We were chatting for a while then his wife came over and we had some good banter with them. Now this is a sign of an establishment that cares !!!. Don't worry we will be back, Great pub, nice people and excellent food. My dog enjoyed the steak. I did cut it with my chefs knife which went through to discover a seam of sinew which could not have been seen prior to cooking .

Hard to decide. But decide we did. My husband had the Hunters chicken, I chose the jacket potato with the sea bass , lime & ginger fish cakes with a salad. Oh my...so good! We had the lemon tart & ice cream to follow. The staff were great, the value excellent as was the food. Loved it so much, we decided to return on the last night of our trip. We thought we'd planned what we wanted. But the following night, we discovered as well as the menu we had seen, there was a blackboard of extra yummyness.

Visited on the way to a hotel stay just up the road and needed some lunch. The Sunday roast was beautiful and excellent value for money, much better than some more expensive ones that we have tried. 3 sizes available so pleases the smallest or largest appetite. The staff were very welcoming and friendly so much so that we went back the following day for lunch before heading back home. Will definitely be making the trip back in the very near future

This is a pub you can drive by and not notice, but worth looking out for. Parked in the car

We've been coming to Bear a few years now and we usually love it!… however, over the past few months we’ve noticed it’s just not the same service. 👎 One of the visits to mention was last week. We popped in to pick up a coffee to go. It seemed pretty quiet… yet it took a lady 15 minutes to make us one coffee? It looked like she was also attended to another drinks tab?..yet there was another lady stood putting glasses away…. Why is your staff find cleaning glasses more important than a paying customer? Do these staff members not want a business to thrive? We were stood there so long. When we finally got the coffee, we got no apology for the insanely long wait. In fact it looked like we inconvenienced her. Perhaps a lesson in customer service would benefit a few of the staff? Such a shame! :(

Lovely pub, great atmosphere - a nice quiet restaurant side and a more lively bar side. Good beer garden. Dog friendly (but not allowed in the restaurant so still friendly to people who don't want dogs running around). Excellent sunday roast and regular menu is delicious too. Really recommend, especially if you're local but even if you're not - its only a few minutes walk from the sixes and allestree bus stops.
