Masala Craft Fine Indian Kitchen & Bar in York

Delightful hidden gem! Recommended by a friend and it certainly didn’t disappointment. Curries were full of flavour (can’t recommend the potato one enough!) and the tapas dishes were a delicious side.Cocktails were fantastic and a great price. If we lived local, we would certainly come again and again.Can’t fault the service, everyone was friendly and wore a smile (even beneath the masks). Would recommend to anyone visiting York looking for a place a little off the beaten track.

Visited early evening with my 13 year old grandson - intending to widen his experience of indian food without scaring him off. Always difficult to gauge the heat level of common dishes in new restaurants so, with the help of the waiter, we decided to play safe with a chicken balti. He albsotutely loved it except it could have been hotter (spicier) for him. We'll do better next time. Otherwise, my Lamb Madras was to die for. Succulent pieces of meat of a quality I'm not used to from the lacal take-away. Thank you chef! Although quiet with just a couple of other families with young children, the location was ideal, the atmosphere pleasant, the service immpecable and the value for money good.

The food here was absolutely delicious, came promptly and was piping hot but the whole evening was let down by the horrendous service. There were only 3/4 other tables filled in the restaurant but the staff seemed to hide near the kitchen, and do everything possible to avoid making eye contact and we had to go out of our way to attract attention to get drinks, to order and to get the bill. Staff seemed to lack any leadership and this definitely made this not as pleasant of an evening as it should have been. Huge thanks to the amazing chefs however

Service was terrible, the food did not appear to be as it was described on the menu and we asked twice for drinks which we never received but were charged for. Other diners were unhappy and no one on the staffing team seemed to take charge. AVOID.

Found this restaurant by accident and so glad we did. Six of us ordered different street food and can say everything was fabulous! So tasty and well looked after. Would definitely recommend. Go!

Maybe this place should stick to vegan and vegetarian dishes because their meat dishes seem to be awful. Ordered a delivery of a mixed grill meal and got last week's grilled lamb (hard and tough to eat) and lots of strngy chicken in sour grease. A bog-standard takeaway would do better than this. Revolting.

The food was truly delicious. Some of the best Indian food that I have had. The vegan selection is fantastic. I have really missed naan bread since going vegan and this was the best naan bread I have ever tasted so I would return just for this! The other food was all brilliant, really interesting, delicate and tasty. Good service and ambience. Thank you!

Me and my boyfriend came here for food and cocktails and had such a brilliant evening. All the staff were friendly and very helpful, the food was some of the best Indian food I have ever had and the cocktails were brilliant. All in all an absolutely fabulous time.

Incredible authentic Dosa's if you know you know! Unbelievably tasty just like we had on our travels... So glad we've found somewhere very local to us that transports us back to a memorable time. Big thanks to the chef! Saag Paneer and garlic nan & rice also delicious. Good and cheap cocktails too. We can't wait to come back next time we are in York.

Highly recommend, it has a street food vibe, which I thought wouldn't be up my street. But was very surprised how good it was. The food was very tasty lots of gluten free options as I'm a Coeliac. Onion bhaji starter was really good 👍

A concise menu but still spoilt for choice. I ordered the butter chicken masala and it had a perfect heat to it and good size chunks of meat. The staff were super friendly and definitely somewhere I would return to.

This was our first Indian in an actual Indian restaurant! We ordered several vegan dishes Inc a potato curry, onion bargi, a lentil dish. All we're delicious 😋 and we had great service with Ana who helped us choose our order.

We came here assuming it would be moderate quality indian street food, we weren’t expecting anything amazing but it was really really bad The food was brought out to us in less than 15 minutes (it was 8 different dishes) which assured me it was not freshly cooked. It was overall just bland and clearly oven food. The service at our table wasn’t horrendous but our waitress and a waiter arguing behind the bar was completely awful and so unprofessional a very classic domestic in front of the restaurant Absolutely do not recommend just don’t bother plenty of better places to go to x

We placed an order by phone for collection at 10 past the hour. It wasn't 100% straightforward placing the order but we got there in the end. I remember very consciously confirming "10 past?" with the guy on the phone to be sure of no mistakes.When I turned up at nine minutes past the hour (i.e. a minute early!) I was gently ticked off for being late by the guy who had taken my order. (He was wearing a facemask on his neck?!) Anyway the guy said my food had been ready "a while" and they'd been wondering what was going on. I pointed at the clock and said "...why?". I noticed the receipt on the bag said "10 TO the hour on it". The food itself was very, very good - with the sole exception of the lamb chops which were either 90% bone or just 90% too hard to actually get any meat off. But don't let me put you off. The rest of the food and the bread we ordered was awesome and I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again - I'd just order for 8pm or 9pm to avoid any language barrier issues with specific times of the clock. :-)

Had a takeaway (all vegetarian). Literally the tastiest and freshest curry I have ever had. The aubergine curry was unbelievable... Couldn't recommend it more highly.

These guys are great, above and beyond in the service aspect, the food was bloody tasty as well and reasonably priced. Will deffo order again.

I would go as far as saying this is the best Indian meal I have had in York. Everything was delicious and the service was outstanding. I went with my partner during the week of the floods (they are still open!). We had to push our reservation back slightly which was no problem. Arvind and all the staff were very attentive throughout.We had popadoms and shared 5 tapas dishes between us and had rice. This was a perfect amount. My partner is vegetarian and there was a good selection for us both.We will be back!

When I moved to York last year Masala Craft was one of the first places I saw that I was determined to visit and I can say without a doubt that it did not disappoint!I dined with my partner and we opted for 5 of the tapas dishes and some rice... we were hungry! All of the dishes were fab, but for me, the Vada Pav was the winner (the green chutney accompaniment was so tasty I could have eaten it as soup! ). I will be recommending this place to anyone and everyone and can't wait to go back and try some more.If you like tasty food with a kick, in a quirky, clean, friendly restaurant, it would be a shame to miss out!Arvind you are a legend!

My lovely wife and I visited Masala Craft for dinner one evening. It styles itself as an Indian street food kitchen so you can get stuff like pav bhaji, vada pav and samosa chaat as well as the typical high street curries. The ambiance is pleasant, with old Bollywood posters and Indian company logos adorning the walls. We shared samosa chaat, bagan bharta, prawn madras, pilau rice and a chilli naan. Everything was pretty good - but don't order the madras unless you like it really spicy. I'd normally give them four stars but the service was super slow so I'm going to have to deduct one star and give them three out of five. I did feel a bit sorry for the waiter as he was the only person front of house. I get the feeling there weren't many people back in the kitchen either. They really need to employ more people if they want customers to have a good experience.

Normalmente, esto me preocuparía enormemente, pero al preguntar sobre esto, se explicó que habían estado ocupados antes de las 7 pm. Además, había escuchado muchas cosas buenas sobre la comida y fue la razón para elegir el lugar.Comenzamos la comida compartiendo una bandeja de encurtidos, más que suficiente para 5 personas y un delicioso sabor crujiente y todas las salsas se podían comer. Un par de nosotros tenía entrantes, cebolla bhaji y un chati que era impresionante. Como plato principal, nuestro único amigo que come inglés tiene chuletas de cordero y papas fritas, que le encantaron. Para mi decepción, 3 de mis amigos comieron el pollo tikka masala, pero hasta el último pedazo de los platos estaban vacíos. Yo personalmente tuve un hermoso cordero especial cocinado a fuego lento, que fue el mejor plato indio que he tenido. Agregue una cerveza cada uno, 3 naans y 3 precios, el total de la comida fue de poco más de 100, 20 por cabeza fue un valor impresionante. Todo el personal fue atento y servicial y gracias chefs.En resumen, si no le importa un ambiente tranquilo un sábado por la noche, pero le encanta la excelente comida india, le recomendaría una visita a Masala Craft. ¡Vuelvo enseguida!

Comimos aquí entre semana y no estaba ocupado pero llegamos temprano. Elegí el menú vegano yo y mi esposo comimos del menú carnoso. La comida era deliciosa en general. Picante, sabroso, abundante y a un precio muy razonable. El camarero fue acogedor, feliz y muy servicial. Si viviéramos cerca, visitaríamos regularmente.

We went on Saturday 21/12 . Party of 5 , food was fantastic . Starters were unique and very tasty , packed full of spice and flavour . Our main courses were equally as good . My prawn curry was amazing . Can not wait to go back . Service was excellent as well .

My partner tried the haggis curry and really enjoyed it. I had the lamb. But was let down. Very watery sauce and a little tasteless. Would give another try if visiting york again.

I visited the Masala Craft last Thbursday evening 7th November hoping to enjoy a light meal with a colleague.

Im a registered Gourmet Society member from Club Lloyds(Lloyds Bank) and this restaurant had an offer of 50% off food bill on Mon-Thurs. I went to this restaurant today(Wed) with my wife and I asked before ordering about my Gourmet Society membership, they turned me down. I was surprised as it clearly states in the app that the restaurant qualifies for 50% off food bill discount. The waitress didnt know about this too and told me its a false card. I showed the waitress my membership on the app, she still didnt believe it. We didnt order anything, walked away. The restaurant was empty anyway.

We booked a table but when we arrived 8.30pm Saturday evening there were only two other tables occupied. Despite this the staff were very helpful and efficient, the food was fabulous, recommended prawn jalfrezi & the coriander naan, and all together with drinks great value for money.

Quiet Thursday night at end of October meant few customers therefore quiet on atmosphere but nevertheless delicious food with great service. Prawn jalfrezi was spot on .

Great curry - had the tea infused chickpea curry and partner had mixed grill - all were superb. Really good music as well and staff were really friendly as well.

We came here on a Friday night about 7.30 after reading the great reviews we we’re excited and expected great things. The place looked more like a Caribbean restaurant than Indian cuisine. We were sat down and immediately received little service no menus, no drink requests. After the staff member came over we ordered a starter, some popadoms and a main each with sides. After waiting 25 minutes the starter never came and we never got any extra dips to go with our popadoms even though we must have asked 3 times. But then came the weird behaviour with staff turning customers away at 8 o’clock as it’s “ too busy” or “closed” when there were only 8 people in the restaurant max including myself and my partner and couldn’t understand why they were turning customers away on a quite Friday night. A couple and young child then walked in and was refused a table despite having rang up and booked earlier on. It was embarrassing the service was shocking, the staffs behaviour was lazy as they spent a lot of time talking at the bar and cleaning the same tables over and over despite them being clean. So when our Mains came ( the starter still hasn’t arrived) we are missing our sides. They then came out 15 minutes after our mains did along with our starter. It was all out of proportion the naan was cold the chips were boiling hot. Me and my partner love going out for a curry but I have never been more disappointed. I do not recommend to anyone! Poor service, weird behaviour and you’ll be waiting all night for you’re food.

Hands down the tastiest, most authentic curry available in York. All the dishes we tried were lovely and the setting is funky, I’ve had other Indian meals recently and been really let down, there’s usually a lot of choice on Indian restaurant menus but all done to a minimum standard where as I’ve found with this restaurant that there’s less option but means all dishes are made to a high standard and actually taste different and as they do in India! Fab.

We were hungry for something other than traditional British, and had noticed this place on our walks. The service was friendly and efficient, and the food really hit the spot--spicy and complex, but not so hot our mouths were on fire. The bill was reasonable--39 pounds for two beers, a shared appetizer, bread, and rice, and two entrees. Delicious!

The food and the service were outstanding. Super clean, great food and attentive, helpful staff. Super impressed with the Chef who came over and walked us through the menu. Enough to say that all the meals were excellent and unique - dont expect the usual stodgy fare that leaves you feeling grim in the morning! Top stuff.

The Punjabi Samosa Chaat was really tasty and a very generous portion. Although listed as Street Bites, it would have done me for a main. I had also ordered a vegetarian curry with a Plain Naan. The Naan was particularly good. The service was really efficient and friendly. I only visit York rarely for work, but will certainly eat here again on a future visit.

So disappointing, especially when looking the rating of this place! The naan was rubbery and had little to no garlic - was definitely microwaved. I've had better from the grocery store. Samosas were covered in a strange array of sauces and toppings- I think even shredded cheese? I had to force myself to eat the saag paneer - really rubbery paneer, and if there was ever spinach involved in that dish, I'd be shocked. It was watery, greasy, and weirdly sweet - all at the same time. I should have walked out when I was the only person there and the waitstaff was chatting amongst themselves about how "no one had come in" - except me! Sitting right there, waiting! That's 17 pounds gone. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

Delicious authentic Indian food for myself who is vegan and my friend who is a meat eater, nice atmosphere and good choice of beers! highly recommended

If you want chicken pakora don’t eat here - there was a pin head of chicken in each stodgy piece -not recommended at all - girls serving were lovely and attentive / all it had going for it

Definitely one of the best authentic Indian meals I have had in Britian. The atmosphere was casual and friendly in this quirky, modern restuarant. The staff were welcoming, friendly and interested. The Punjabi Lamb was delicious. The menu was varied with Mumbai street food and good veggie options. If I lived here, I would be a regular customer. Great food, warm personal service, good value.

This was a bit hit and miss, mum ordered lamb chops but they were so tough and I order chicken korma and this was delicious, we had them with naan which was also very nice. The prices were high and they wanted 2 pounds for a serving of poppadoms which seem very expensive. The staff were very nice.

After hearing about "Mumbai inspired" food, I thought it would be great to visit this place to get a good dose of the food that Mowgli's den claims to serve. How wrong I was. It's just another run of the mill Bangladeshi curry house faking it to be Indian. The name is ripped off from Mowgli, a fantastic restaurant chain, including some of the dishes, including Mowgli's chat bombs. Also it claims to hail from Mumbai's "chaat Bazaar," there's no such place in Mumbai. The food is the normal generic sauce based stuff and lacks any kind of flavour. They'd be do better if they stopped pretending, and began serving Bangladeshi cuisine instead of faking being from Mumbai.

Unpretentious venue which surprises by the quality of the wonderful food, especially the entrees. The yoghurt bombs are wonderful, could eat them all night.

It’s always quiet when I pass, I’m not exactly sure why as the food makes a good effort at being a cut above the standard high street curry, the beers are good and the decor modern and bright.

The beer I ordered wasn't available which is always annoying but they made up for it with the pork vindaloo and mushroom vege curry. They were the best curries we have had in a long time! Vindaloo is not too spicy at all, it is more of a medium which was perfect.

Table of 10, My two sons who love their curry’s Said the 2 Vindaloo pork was superb, the four of us who had chicken tikka masala(brown sauce) found it to be a big miss all agreeing it tasted more like a Chinese curry, maybe our southern taste buds are different, masala in our ares have a rich reddish sauce. The other meals were good, unfortunately the service wasn’t the best with the main food being laid out but with no plates or cutlery (spoons) staff were friendly on What was a fairly busy night with other large table sittings.

We had the chat bombs, aubergine curry, tandoori paneer and the belly pork vindaloo - all superb, especially the vindaloo. The chef came out to ask if we had enjoyed the meal - nice to know he cares about his food. The food could not be faulted at all and am keen to go back for the keema mater curry and the mixed grill. The only downside was the beers. If this place wants to be a 'craft beer' option then it should have at least 2/3 options available. The Brew York Gulager was not on and the Jaipur didn't taste right so was also not offered. Maybe some more bottled beers would be a better way forward. However, this should not detract from the excellent chef here. We will be back for the food alone.

Our second visit, and great both times. Really tasty food, that is far more interesting than the average Indian restaurant. Service was personal and friendly. Really central location and plenty of room for larger groups. We will definitely be regular visitors.

We came here for my wife birthday, hoping to find Masala Craft to find it had changed hands and been bought back by the original chef. He was very front of house helping us choose what was vegan or gluten free (yes we are that awkward family). Its always pleasant to find an Indian restaurant that makes an effort not to be a run of the mill/same sauce with everything kind of place. There were plenty of new things to try and enough for a vegetarian family of four to order. Highlights were the ocra starter and the aubergine main. We will definitely return.

A quiet place within the city limits, close to the river. Authentic Indian food with a great twist of flavours. With recent make over and rebranding nothing has change much. Its still the same chef, who makes cooking easy and simply keeping in mind the taste and flavours, would say nothing is impossible.

Tasty food, interesting decor and friendly, welcoming and attentive service. The staff are clearly interested in the customers and the food, and there are dishes not commonly found in a lot of other Indian restaurants. Will definitely be back to work my way through the menu!

This is a superb Indian restaurant in York, down by the river, and has been recently re-branded from Masala Craft with vibrant new decor. Don't expect it to be full or buzzing - this isn't your typical Indian restaurant, so that must put a few people off. More fool them, though: come here for the truly excellent food. Owner/chef Arvind has an innovative and carefully crafted menu (including his exquisite desserts - save room if you can!). He will often come out and chat briefly to diners if he has time, as he takes great pride in his work and in seeing people appreciate his food.

After having read all reviews was looking foreard to meal on Saturday night .We had booked a table but on arrival the place was empty should have realised then.

Having read the great reviews we visited on a Saturday night. We arrived around 7.15pm , a table of 4 next to us had finished and we’re leaving. This left 2 other tables of 2 , a table of 4 and our table for two. So, hardly busy for a Saturday. But the service was really poor. The table next to us where people were leaving as we arrived never got cleared in the just over 2 hours we were there. There was a lovely guy waiting tables and an even lovelier young girl , both obviously nice people but absolutely not cut out for the jobs they did. The restaurant was actually really cold, some people put coats back on, until someone asked for heating to be turned on or up. It was actually really funny as we had to ask to order, then waited and waited . I am absolutely aware that good food takes time and for this I’m willing to wait but it was excessive, all we had were popadoms , a curry each, one rice and one naan so hardly a banquet but this took 2 hours. The couple next to us had to ask to order, then asked twice for a coke but it was really funny and everyone just kept looking at each other table to tables as if to say “ is it just us” I honestly don’t get the great reviews, at all, really. When food eventually came it was nothing more than ok , I’ve definitely had better. The service was really poor but almost feel bad for being honest as the girl waiting on was really lovely . Would give it a miss next time☹️.

Even though this is not in the thick of the city and doesn't look like much from the outside this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. I was in a large group and we had pre booked. Unfortunately the size of the group meant some of them were waiting a long time for their food. The food is cooked fresh to order and was worth the wait. It was delicious. Hot plates and presented well. There is a good variety of vegetarian dishes too. Friendly staff.

Popped into here, looks can be deceiving. I had the lamb chops, best ever will defo come back if we ever visit this wonderful city again. Chef came over making sure all was ok with our meal, lovely touch.

Claramente, cuando estábamos en el hotel, tenían poco personal y estaban ocupados, ya que esperamos 40 minutos para conseguir nuestros entrantes y luego compraron los artículos equivocados. Sin embargo mantuvieron una actitud profesional amigable y no nos ignoraron. Una vez que la comida fue recibida fue excelente. Bien hecho

Great food good price surroundings and lovely staff good choice for veggies.It was my husband's birthday and at the end of the meal they brought him a cake and sang to him those little touches mean a lot go try it

What a meal. Just visited for a networking evening and I will be coming back often. I had the Pau Bhaji and Masala fish curry, absolutely beautiful and the naan bread were so light. I will be recommending this place to all my guests

We visited here late on a Monday evening and it was relatively busy which we took as a good sign. Both of our curry’s were lovely, service was good. The only reason I’ve given 4 stars rather than 5 is because the lamb samosa starters were a little too tepid for my liking but that’s me being very picky and down to personal taste. Overall I would highly recommend.

My wife and I ate here on the 12th of September and we rated our meal as one of the best curries that we have had for a very long time. Our waitress was extremely polite and friendly and the food itself was outstanding. From the Samosas and Bhajis to start to the Bhuna and Jalfrezi for our mains, everything was beautifully fresh, well presented and most importantly extremely tasty. It was a very nice touch that the Head Chef, Arvind Mamgain took time to come over to our table and ask how our meal was. Highly recommended!!!

Popped in for a late supper, food was amazing. Young waiter serving us was extremely helpful and friendly. Chef came out to chat also which is a lovely touch. Will definitely be back on our next visit. Thank you.

Hidden down a side street we only found it because it had been recommended by a friend. The food was delicious and plenty of it. We had the lamb shank and the Goan curry. Both were excellent. We finished with kulfi and a very unusual strawberry liqueur. We will certainly go again.

Just a few steps from the King's Arms, although tucked away in a side street, this delightful restaurant served us a delicious, obviously freshly cooked, and aromatic menu. We almost didn't go in as it looked quiet and the menu appeared unusual, but we're so glad we did as this is a little gem of a place. Very friendly and efficient service. Highly recommend it.

Had the most amazing dinner. The food was amazing the the staff was some of the best you would come across. Top notch I would highly recommend this restaurant.
