Marlowe's in Canterbury

I’m flying solo before the Stewart Lee gig tonight, in the nearby Marlow theatre. I thought I’d treat my lonely little self to a pre theatre meal. The excellent service and value were only surpassed by the quality of cut of sirloin, that was perfectly seasoned (the side salad dressing also stood out). Complimented by a fine Malbec. I’ll be back, much too good to keep for theatre nights only.

We called in here for an evening meal after the performance of Dear Evan Hanson on Saturday.Front of house very welcoming.We both had starters and mains and shared a dessert. The food was very flavoursome I had the duck and it melted in my mouth.My wife had the corn fed chicken . The food prices are really reasonable and so was the wine. Keep doing what you are doing as it is a winning formula!!

Loved the ?50s decor and old music to match. Great service and great food too.

My friend and I had a meal there yesterday lunchtime. We had Fish chips and peas. For a dessert we had Salted Caramel Tart with Ice Cream. The service was impeccable. We would definitely go there again.

This was our first visit. The restaurant was well decorated with black and white photos which covered the walls. We had good service and good food. Reasonably priced for a decent meal.

Visited for the first time yesterday evening for a pre-theatre dinner as very close to the Marlowe. Very reasonably priced, lovely decor and cosy atmosphere. Service was superb. And food was excellent. We opted for the 3 course set menu which had a huge range. We all had something different for our mains and all were beautifully presented and tasted amazing! So glad to have found this little place and will definitely be back. Thank you!

Seemingly a more a theatre time restaurant , because when we went it was deserted which was surprising given the quality and the price of the food we re had which were good.

We ate here last March and came back twice this time on our mid week break between Christmas and New Year We had sirloin steak (cooked to perfection for us) and salted caramel tart with ice cream which was divine! Next evening we went for the set menu but couldn't resist the steak again and caramel tart but also had starters of calamari and pate both good. Love the pictures of actors of bygone days and it feels a bit french style bistro inside All the staff are attentive and professional The place to try when in Canterbury and not a chain!

Fabulous food and great service. We went before going to the Pantomime and had superb sharing board. So good we went back for lunch the following day to repeat the Apple Tart and ice cream which was absolutely the best ever!

Très bonne ambiance dans cet endroit où nous avons été happé par des habitués alors que nous regardions la carte. Le plus: le patron/serveur qui est ADORABLE! La nourriture est top, la déco et la musique aussi! Je recommande vivement! (Petit conseil cependant: ne vous asseyez pas derrière la porte! 😉)

A lovely, relaxed evening with a helpful waitress, lots of Christmas decorations and of course countless photos of old time actors for us to try to name! The food was beautifully presented and full of flavour. 3 of us had the beetroot salad and all agreed it was excellent. And my husband was equally happy with his soup. The waitress was patient and didn't rush us as we decided what to have and made changes, adding fries to my sea bass and swopping fries for new potatoes on the fish and chips. 2 had steak which both said was perfectly cooked and we had a variety of desserts including lemon tart and apple crumble with everything being of the same high quality. We ate from the set menu with a couple of additions/ changes and shared a bottle of wine which with 3 courses was still below £30 each. We will be back. Thank you to the team at Marlowe restaurant.

Had a really good meal with friends. All 4 of us in our group rated the food as 5 *. We all liked our starters (warm beetroot salad and soup)and mains too (fish and chips, steaks and sea bass). Puds too. And we gave it 10* for the sparkly Christmas decorations!

Pre theatre excellence! Lamb chops or sirloin? Either delicious, good attentive service and very reasonable prices. Great.

I recently enjoyed a delightful pre-theatre dining experience that perfectly set the tone for the evening. This is the second time that I’ve eaten here. The restaurant was conveniently located near the theatre, making it an ideal choice for a relaxed meal before the show. The service was attentive and efficient, ensuring we had plenty of time to enjoy our courses without feeling rushed. The menu offered a variety of light, flavorful options that didn’t leave us feeling too full, but satisfied and ready for the performance. Popped in here before a theatre show and the food was outstanding. I recommend the cornfed chicken. Brilliant. Excellent value for money. Shame its not disable access but not surprising due to age of the building.

Never fails to deliver! as a pre theatre restaurant, it is convenient, the service is very good, the food (lamb chops!!) is first class, a bit noisy but !!!!1 very reasonable prices.

Great place for a meet-up with friends. We arrived early for coffee, stayed for lunch and chat afterwards. Sea bass was incredible - absolutely delicious. Friends had salmon and chicken, again all really happy with the food, service, environment. Right in the middle of Canterbury and therefore convenient for everything the city has to offer. We will definitely come again. Options of fixed price lunch (2 or 3 courses) or a la carte - both very well priced.

It is located on the street leading to the cathedral. Great for a light drink or lunch. It's kind of gorgeous and has a nice bright light coming in. Take a break.

Went there for dinner tonight and was very happy with my whole order and service. The food was honestly great, found no fault with it whatsoever. The waitress was brilliant and very attentive all night and got us everything we needed being a table of 6 adults and a child. Very happy overall not complaints. Will be back soon.

This restaurant has amazing food I he’s the lamb chops which was cooked to perfection, my husband had the duck which was also cooked to perfection. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere was wonderful. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Ate here last night and the food was amazing I had the lamb chops, husband had the duck breast. The staff are so friendly too and very efficient. We will definitely be returning when we are back in Canterbury. 🥰

Very nice place, comfortable, nice ambience. We enjoyed our meal here although I can't remember what we ate! The type of place where you can have an interesting conversation with the next table, which we did. Just a pleasant experience.

The weather was perfect and the food was even better ! By far the best chicken I've ever had. The sauce was DELICIOUS 😋 The service was a little slow but he was very nice 🙂

Basic no frills food but well cooked and extremely good value. Mature staff friendly and helpful. What's not to like?

Great little spot on the street in the city area of Canterbury. Usually reservations are a good idea but we managed to walk in off the street and got a cosy table with street view. There's an upstairs dining area as well. Service was great, and a nice vibe. We enjoyed a really delicious vegan burger and sumptuous wee dessert. ❤

This restaurant was a stand-out for fresh ingredients, nicely balanced flavors, just-enough portion size and dishes (we had chicken supreme and sea bass from the prix fixe menu) served piping hot and pleasing in presentation. The desert was just so : puckery lemon tart smoothed by a dab of creme fraiche and crowned with a delicate caramelized sugar topping. Combined with cheerful and attentive service this was a memorable dining experience.

Took a chance as not booked prior to show. Sat upstairs. Stairs are not for the faint hearted! Well presented meal but expensive as portion size small. Had the duck dish at £20.95, this could have been served on a tea plate. No dessert. Waiter not very talkative. Bill given to us before we asked for it. All felt quite rushed to be honest.

Spotted this place when walking through Canterbury on Sunday afternoon, when we had first arrived for our holiday and thought it looked nice, so made a mental note. Four of us went this evening and had a lovely meal, we all chose 3 courses from the set menu, all of us enjoyed our meal choices, not huge portions -but I much prefer a slightly smaller portion of nicely cooked food than a huge plate of junk food - anyway we thought it was very good value, nice atmosphere and efficient friendly service. Would definitely return!

Decent restaurant in the center of Canterbury. Friendly service, a little too friendly. The menu is quite varied and the prices are reasonable. The food was good, although the meat was not cooked as requested.

Lovely little restaurant close to the theatre, with the walls full of black and white photos of bygone film stars. We had a really nice meal - my lamb chops with mint and pomegranate were very good - and the service was friendly and attentive.

Unprofessional and unfriendly staff! Chaotic organization

I treated my mum to dinner here last Friday (9th Aug) just before a show at the theatre. She ordered tuna nicoise and I ordered lamb chops. The food did take a little while to come and when it did arrive it looked beautiful however the tuna and lamb were both EXTREMELY over cooked, especially the tuna it was like cotton wool. As we weren’t asked how we would like our food we incorrectly assumed the tuna would seared and the lamb pink. We didn’t say anything at the time as we needed to dash to see our show, and ultimately we would have felt bad to have anything changed there and then. But I HATE to see good produce ruined.

What a good price-quality ratio! Delicious burgers and fries. We sat inside but the doors to the terrace were open. Very nice service too.

Lovely place to have a meal, loads of different photos of old Film Stars around the place, had a Set Menu which was very nice indeed, Black and White photos making it an enjoyable evening indeed.

It was ok but I wouldn’t say it was great. The bread was delicious. The calamari was oily and grim. The chicken and gratin potato with mushroom sauce was good. Overall average hence 3 stars

I think this is the worst restaurant I have ever been to, we asked for calamari as a starter and it came over fried, fish and ships as a main it came also over fried and tasteless, last thing was the chocolate fondant and it came cold!!!!! Not sure what to say more!

Nice place to have dinner on St Peter’s Street. Friendly service and good food. We were there at the end of the evening and some dishes and beers were not available anymore. Outside seating, very nice to watch people passing by. Vega options scored most points!

Sat and ate steaks in the sun, delicious

Two contrasting experiences. Went a few weeks ago for pre theatre dinner booking at 5.30pm. Food was excellent, service fantastic three course meal done well in time for the theatre. Last night booked again for 5.30pm downstairs was full so was placed upstairs. Felt from that moment on we were forgotten toom a while to place and order. Had garlic bread starter and main course but by this time it was 6.45. When asked about deserts we said if we could have them quickly as we had to go and was told that was unlikely as there were lots of people waiting on deserts. So we left not having completed our meal. Seemed that the place was overbooked and rather spoilt the evening.

Amazing food and service superb

I had a fantastic time dining by myself at Marlowe’s. I did the set meal of two courses and got the brie and bread along with the chicken supreme. Paired with a glass of pinot grigio, the entire meal was superb.

Great food! Amazing local lager! We had the breaded brie! wild mushroom risotto and the duck and it was cooked to perfection. Friendly staff and the seats outside are cozy. Good wine selection as well.

Been here a few times on my travels to Canterbury and it is always delicious and delightful. The menu is full of lots of different options and a very reasonable priced set menu is also avaliable. A handy location for the theatre and has lots of seating inside and a few outside for alfresco dinning. Staff very welcoming and friendly, will be going again!

Excellent pre theatre three course dinner. The food was very good, as was the service, and it was so reasonably priced. Our whole bill for 2 x three course dinners on a set menu plus a large wine, a beer, and a tea and coffee only came to £65. Have often passed by Marlowes and gone to a chain restaurant instead , won't be doing that in the future.

Great Little restaurant right around the corner from the theatre and the cathedral. We popped in for dinner and had the duck breast and wild mushroom risotto. Both were perfectly prepared and the presentation was top notch as well. The kids had burgers and even those weren't small little burgers - proper portions. The host was very friendly and accommodated us even though we didn't have a reservation. Good service overall. Overall, I was extremely impressed with the Marlowe's. The prices was also very reasonable given the portions and quality of the food. I'll definitely visit again when I'm in Canterbury again.

We booked Marlowe’s before a night at the Marlowe theatre. When we walked in I was a little concerned as we were the only people in the restaurant however, it filled up quite quickly! We ordered the sirloin steak and oh my goodness!!!! It was the best steak we had tasted for a LONG time!!!! Was an incredible meal!! We only had a meal, potato gratin on the side (which my partner confirmed was the best one he had tried!) and a drink each (Stella and large white wine) but it came to £60 which we thought was very fair! We came from Maidstone area but have said we will make the return to Canterbury to bring family up as we enjoyed our meal that much! Our server was so polite, I didn’t catch her name but she was a young girl with mid length brown hair. Owner (I’m guessing) was very welcoming. We were so impressed!! My partner is still raving about his steak!

We recently visited Marlowe's during our recent stay in Canterbury. The food and service were exceptional at Marlowe's. We opted for the 3 course set menu which I would highly recommend. Nice to eat somewhere that's not a big chain. Highly recommended 😊

Not recommend. The sirloin not sirloin tough meat you cannot chew. Calamari ehh. Don't try. I think Google comments are not appropriate.

Popped in for lunch today. Had the sea bass and my husband had the chicken supreme. I would always choose sea bass and was not disappointed. It was cooked perfectly. The skin was lovely and crispy and veg was was just right. In the words of Arnie ' I'll be back'.

My recent visit to Marlowe’s in Canterbury left much to be desired. While the steak itself was decent, earning a modest 6.5 out of 10, the overall experience fell short of expectations. Firstly, the accompanying chips were disappointingly frozen, a common occurrence that detracted from the meal’s quality. Additionally, the service was lacking warmth, with a noticeable coldness that one wouldn’t expect, especially from a manager. To add to the disappointment, the sauce provided with the meal was evidently heated in the microwave, compromising its flavor and quality. As it stands, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend Marlowe’s based on this experience.

We stumbled across this place walking through Canterbury and WOW! what a treat. The steak was to die for. Attentive service and a great atmosphere. We’ll certainly be coming back. Edit: I forgot to take the photo before I ate so that’s the empty plate lol

Two of us ate here on Thursday 15th February 2024. I had Calamari and Lamb chops. Both were substantial portions, good quality and well prepared and presented. Service was good. Restaurant was quiet at 18:30 which suited us. Highly recommended. Wine was reasonably priced

We enjoyed the 3 course set menu absoulutely delicious and nice and hot! We had been here couple of years back felt the portion sizes had shrunk abit but was all very tasty shame the banoffee pie was no longer part of the 3 course set menu meals we always had this and so delucious . Had the brie to start lovely and enjoyed the salad leaves and dressing with it could have been a little more salad leaves .Had the garlic chicken for main and apple crumble for pud lovely i like my foid hot and didnt disapount .really nice food -1* tables are a little cramp and close together.

Not often I want to write the review during the meal. This little gem, surrounded by the commercial chains, caught our eye…. Wow. Baked Camembert and the Garlic Mushrooms to start, followed by Chicken Milenese. Each of which were probably the best I’ve ever eaten. My partner, fussiest foodie alive, bowled over by the quality of the ingredients and the flavours from the food. No frills. No fuss. No stuck up ambience. Just maybe one of the best restaurants I’ve been in, in years. One caveat - we did hit it on a Weds afternoon and it was quiet with only two tables in use til we arrived. Def going back.

We popped into Marlowes today and managed to get a table for 2. We picked the breast of duck in a rich alcoholic cherry sauce as we gad seen it on someone's review. Oh my god, you normally have to go to the depths of the Dordogne in France to get a decent duck dish. But here in Marlowes Canterbury, the chef has perfected the dish to equal any French restaurant. Hats off to you sir, it was a great meal.

Wow, what a gem! The food is great and the decor is very interesting. Definitely worth visiting!

Been going to this little place since 2013 and the food was always amazing. Went horribly downhill in the last year or so, whether it was change of ownership or a head chef, but the food is awful now. For a £17 main meal you get 3 tiny lamb chops and a plate of salad. For £16 a plate of salad and an overcooked, dry as hell tuna "steak". Service is very slow and inattentive. The only good thing was the camembert starter and wine. Pity.

We stopped for a quick lunch and drinkwith family members, before leaving Canterbury. We found it to be reasonable priced with friendly staff. Our food was hot and overall, we had a good experience.

Really nice restaurant in the heart of the town, food was great quality and well cooked, recommend the lamb and apple tart. Friendly staff and nice interior.
