Marks and Spencer Cafe in Edinburgh, City of

From entering the cafe the staff appeared to have plenty of time to stand around and chat to each other rather than serve a queue of customers. Upon reaching the till the two female staff members were stood chatting, only one was was actually doing some working as she was preparing hot drinks. After several minutes we had asked politely if we could order food as we were told that they stopped taking food orders after 4.30pm. One member of staff was making drinks whilst the other just talked and said she would be with us in a minute. That staff member then muttered to her colleague and pointed, nodded and laughed at us. The attitude and lack of customer service skills was utterly appalling to say the least. We were then spoken to by another member of the team like crap, no manners or respect was given as we were awaiting glasses to be given to us which we had to ask for 3 times, so that we could get some water. We were also waiting to collect the hot drinks that were ordered. We were expected to move further back down the queue in the opposite direction of the water tank. So very unsure what was expected of us in order to fill the glass with water. After pointing this out she was continually being rude and abrupt and continued to ask us to move in the opposite direction to rejoin the queue of customers awaiting to be served. I had then asked to speak with the manager, the male turned round and he was also rather abrupt and rude and lacked skills in how customers should be spoken too. Not one apology was given by any of the staff in the cafe. The seating area was filled with empty tables uncleared and we had to clear our own table. After a discussion at the table our party of 5 had discussed contacting head office and suddenly the attitude of the staff changed and the manager had made an effort to be nice. Albeit to little too late!! His attitude before was also rude and disrespectful, if he wants customers to be polite and respectful then I suggest this works both ways, our response was a reflection of their attitude and sheer disrespect towards us as customers. Upon leaving and entering the food hall we were heading for Aisle two to access the toilets. A lady had over heard us and the level of service from this lady was high end in comparison to what we had just encountered. We had a discussion with this lady who apologised on behalf of the experience we had encountered and she was absolutely lovely. 10/10. During our visit I may also add that several loud smashing bangs came from behind the counter several times as crockery had been dropped and broken. The staff seemed to be in a rush to finish but had no time for the customers.

Awful service from 2 young ladies,Julie in particular. Impolite, attitude awful, not helpful to older customers at all. Not at all a good impression for guests, some being foreign visitors. Not good enough M&S.

Arrived late afternoon, very quiet plenty of seats. Ordered 3 iced frappes. Sat ages on our order, while customers after us got their drinks before us. Seemed huge hassle to get a shot of coffee added to an iced frappe! They weren’t even cold , like no ice in them! Got the order completely mixed up, one was meant to be in a take away cup for my daughter but they got order completely wrong. Too many staff trying to communicate and they were not the ones making them, they should have got the member of staff making them to come check the order. Didn’t even get an apology for getting it mixed up, won’t be back. Stick to Starbucks for Frappes in future. Check out photo, how can you justify all 3 cups being the same price, £4.40 each! Different sizes. Shocking tasted more like a milkshake

I was there on the 26th July for a cappuccino and prawn sandwich. I can honestly say it was the WORST coffee I have had for a very long time, Perhaps the machine was dirty ?

Been here a few times and generally normal service with no complaints. A lovely verbally challenged lady helped me with a tray cos I didn’t know where to get one. But sadly the cashier was nasty and rude, but was surprisingly pleasant to the lady right after me who happened to be white. I’m not. She slammed the milk on the counter. Made the tea like she was forced to, and just left them on the counter, and looked away. I was so embarrassed.

It's okay but the range of food including sandwiches is a bit limited and over priced. Nevertheless, staff are friendly and professional and it's pleasant, clean and tidy.

Had the breakfast wrap and decaf cappuccino. Firstly breakfast wrap was unappetising, beans were dried out and bacon was all fat and no bacon, had to spit it our as couldn't chew it down, felt like I was chewing on a bike inner tube. Pulled the remaining stringy fatty substance out that was supposed to be bacon. Wrap itself had a strange taste, similar to coriander, perhaps it was the sauce they used, strange combination anyway. The coffee was very very bland and tasted like hot milk, not sure they put any coffee in it. Tables were dirty and not being cleaned regularly. Cost 9 pound odd which was a rip off for the standard and quality of food. Sorry won't be back. I'd have been better going to Tim Hortons who offer an amazing breakfast wrap, hash brown and delicious coffee for £3.49. At 3 times the price and at least 3 times less quality I feel I've been diddled, especially in this cost of living crisis. Staff at the counter were all disinterested and too busy chatting amongst themselves. Very poor customer service by young girl and gentleman serving on the morning of Friday 31 March 2023. The older gentleman that was serving was very polite and helpful. Avoid, better places around.

A typical M&S restaurant. A decent selection of snacks, reasonably priced but very slow service and even slower clearing of tables

Stayed in the Mercure next door but this simple cafe is a good spot to get a simple breakfast with a good choice and decent coffee.

Called in for a snack with two friends. We had a good choice to pick from. One of my friends tossed her glass of water which was all over the table and floor. An assistant called Nicola came to our rescue and was very willing to mop up and check if we were ok. This lady made the visit worthwhile and memorable.

Very poor choice. Sourdough bread in nearly everything. Sandwich selection poor. Not what you would expect from MnS

Called in for a coffee. Staff friendly but slow. Horrified to see at least two customers finger, sniff them put back fresh scones with their fingers!! Totally ignoring the tongs. I think M&S need to rethink their strategy as people cannot be trusted.

Went for late breakfast and found plenty from which to choose. The queue was long and moved only slowly but the tea, hot chocolate and sandwiches were more than adequate.

Regularly visit m&s when in the retail park On the whole, staff in the shop floor and bakery , were pretty good Member of staff on the til, was alas nowhere close First class misery guts, disinterested, did not wish to engage in any conversation ( she made it abundantly clear) No I know we’re all up a certain creek without a paddle, but the thing is we’re all in the mire I came pretty close to leaving the stuff we bought. Lengthy queue as limited people allowed in. Good socially distanced tables and screens. Scones with jam and cream with hot drink on offer which were very nice. Cafe in Government Eat Out Scheme so a nice surprise at the till. Would visit again

Came here for lunch with friends and both had soup, chicken and rice, spicy lentil. A small wait caused by the slow coffee machine however, food arrived hot and tasty, coffee was also good. Friendly staff. Overall, a good pit stop for lunch.

Really like Marks and Spencer however it doesn't matter which one you go to they are always very disorganized and you end up waiting an age to get service

Marks and Spencer is one of the largest store on Princes Street . It is sitauted on various levels , due to the store now occupyinmg various buildings. typical M and S selection

The cafe is in the basement, so no views! However my choice was fine- a Scone and tea, consistently good. I did honk the lunch run was a bit pricey and not very exciting but my choice was fine and service ok.

One thing about M&S cafes is that you know that the food and drinks are consistently good and I suppose that's part of the reason why they are so popular. The Princes St one is no different and its conveniently situated in the centre of the city. There's a wide choice of drinks and hot and cold food snacks all at reasonable prices.The problem we faced was finding a table that wasn't stacked high with used crockery and awaiting clearing and cleaning. There were plenty of tables available but seemingly very few staff removing used crockery etc. Eventually we found two empty tables together so managed to combine the considerable amounts of used crockery onto one table and wipe that other table with a plentiful supply of tissues! We were there for about 30 minutes and in that time no one cleared the other table.

Very disappointed in the service at marks and Spencer cafe. ordered 1 coffee and 3 pots of tea. received only 2 tea cups 3rd cup was a coffee cup being picky would normally say yes but after having to ask for the accompanying biscuit free with coffee or tea the look the girl gave me and the way she throw the biscuits onto the saucers really was disrespectful. Then we noticed the cups are not washed properly chipped and sticky will be going to Costa from now on

Filthy. Cups, saucers, knives, the lot. When I complained about my cup I was told it was ok as the dirty Mark was on the outside. You’ve got to give it to them, that was not just any throw back line it was a Marks & Spencer throw back line.

While shopping for some necessary ingredients for banana nut and zucchini nut breads, I stopped in to the M&S Cafe. My friend Andrew K. is the GM of both in store cafes (upstairs and downstairs) at the Princess St. location. Amazing entrees and desserts for a cafe. It sort of leaves one with the feeling of an “old style” cafeteria with modern decor and menu. Unfortunately, I failed to take photographs; however, the breads I made back at the bed and breakfast, using the M&S ingredients, turned out quite well. Not the regular idea of a tourist restaurant, but, when I’m in Edinburgh, I’m not a tourist!....it’s home away from home!

the food was cold...and shouldn't be served....the staff shouted at my mother because she asked why the chicken burger was burned and black in the side ...worst experience ever ....i will never get back to this place again...they never respect elderly people !!!!!

Why is the service so slow in absolutely every M & S no matter what end of the Country you are in. The Staff always look under stress and not particularly happy to be there The prices are M & S prices and the food is just edible the only exception is the tasty scones.

I came here following a dissappointing visit to a Pret a Manger who were unable to warm up croissant. M&S; were wonderful. It turned out warming a croissant was very easy and could even be done with a smile, There was a problem in that I think the order was lost but the mistake was rectified with such grace and genuine remorse that it became insignificant. The delay meant I was late meeting my wife and the staff PERSONALLY posted a guard on my table and belongings while I went in search of the better half. The delay, caused I think by the place being extremely busy gave the caring staff an opportunity to really impress me with the dedication to excellent service. Stuff does sometimes go wrong. It's how you react that's really important.

Coffee and a bacon bap to start the day off. Its M&S; so you know it what to expect. Decent coffee and a good bacon sandwich.

we have been here before but never again the staff were very rude and they really couldn't cope with the amount of people there. The choice of food wasn't good and the place was so messy. You do expect more from M@S but not here the person running the café need to sort it out.

I often pop into M and S cafe for a quick lunch when working. However, in the last few months the selection has been decimated. they often run out of main meals and have stopped serving any form of salad! Not all of us want heavy bread and potato dishes at lunchtime. There used to be salads in the chilled section and a salad on the menu but now there is nothing but a mass of carbohydrates. Please, M and S help me out and bring some salads back!

Extremely disappointing visit!! Long queues to counter - one member of staff at desk who was struggling to cope, no teapots ready, and waiting for clean cups - no spoons or sugar at help yourself area. Dirty uncleared tables. One to avoid!

Reasonable espresso and a nice fresh croissant but I found the basement setting a little grim. Ok for a pit stop.

We had two scones with jam and clotted cream and a coffee and tea. These scones were so nice, they just came out while we were deciding on what cake to get and these scone were so fresh. This was the first time we tried clotted cream and it was delicious. The tea and coffee was also perfect and the staff were very pleasant.

We felt this was a high standard eating place. You are on Princes Street, there is up and down escalator to the cafe. Fast friendly service and staff. Excellent scones and a nice cup of tea.

Dropped in for an Earl Grey Tea and a cake around 3pm. Yes , a busy time and festival still on although petering out. Many of the sweet items (croissants, cakes and slices) are 'serve yourself' in two different places. At both places there were small serving plates - all which were still wet (from the dishwasher). If you put your slice of cake on one, it would have absorbed each puddle! I eventually chose a shortbread slice and dried a plate myself.

Very busy at 4.30pm but still clean and all hands on deck as well as helpful. Now too the food - ploughman's platter this was amazing. Well presented and so worth the money. You would pay a lot most in some places for this meal. The presentation was very good and fresh from the fridge. If in m&s; you have to give this a try.

Went in for a quick bite of lunch during the Fringe there was very little food left and it is far far too small for the size of the store. The staff need to manage the tables better the few tables that there are some were tables of four with one person sitting at it and others where people were sitting have finished long before we got there and people wandering around with trays trying to find a seat

Went during the festival Very good Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with barista made coffee at a fraction if the hotel price. So why not ,it is what says on the can

They have the air conditioning so cold that your teeth chatter. Pick a table far away from the massive air conditioner. You can’t miss it as the little flags below are almost blowing away.....

Good selections of snacks or quick meals. More for a bite to eat quickly than a leisurely lunch or coffee due to more cafeteria surroundings.

We stopped here for a quick meal. The food was reasonably priced and well prepared. I had chicken and rice soup, and it was a good sized portion with two good rolls.

Part of the actual grocery store, this was our stop for lunch as we walked on Princes Street and the Royal Mile. It's at the back of the market. Lots of nice choices. You order, they heat it up and then bring it to your table. Nice clean restrooms as well. A nice,surprise find!

Small cafe and supermarket right by the M and S store. Go downstairs and go to the back of the supermarket. Nice choices. Staff heats up items and then bring it to your table. Had some sandwiches and they were very good. We were in the middle of sightseeing and just needed a small lunch and this was perfect. You can then grab a snack from the supermarket itself on the way out. Staff cleaning tables immediately. Also, clean restroom. Glad we found the sign for it!

Came in the rose Street entrance and found a table ,cafe was very busy today .We took the cappuccinos and toasted hot cross buns which were delicious . The Cafe is on the small side and it is a struggle to find a table . The store could easily double the size of the place and they would have more customers

I noticed this last year that the prices in their cafes is going up and if you need something to eat you might have a better deal in the local pubs . the Bol of soup with two tiny bread rolls is at £4.50 .

Felt hungry and as it was midday I decided to go into the Marks and Spencer cafefor a light meal. I had the chicken stir fry and a piece of cake. The cake was £2.75 and the chicken £6.50 which for the location in the tourist area wasn't too bad but what a let down with the quality as the chicken was only warm and the cake was a little too dry. I will not be using this cafe again !!

Stopped for a quick bite. Staff were friendly, cafe a bit dingy. Plastic bottles, napkins, food and other rubbish all over the floor despite there only being a dozen or so customers. Young staff seemed happy to chat to each other rather than make sure the place was clean and tidy. Gents toilet by food hall full to brim with sewage, disabled toilet filthy, seat covered in urine, no toilet roll available. Had to take my daughter to baby change room and the 3 or 4 bins were full to the brim with nappies and hand towels. Mentioned to staff and wrote complaint email. Response was the usual 'sorry it wasn't up to standard' chat. Didn't seem too bothered, hence the review. Hopefully they do something to sort it out. I don't think it was the staff's fault rather the lack of management/supervision.

I know it was a busy Saturday in December but to queue for twenty minutes with only 6 people in front of me is a joke. They need to get more staff and an extra coffee machine. Also a staff member was very rude to those of us in the queue that blocked her way to behind the counter!

A vibrant in store Café with an amazing array of choice on the menu. Called in for two meals (Breakfast and Lunch) whilst we were sight seeing in Edinburgh. Friendly efficient staff, high quality food and drink. Really impressed.

Usual Marks &Spencer; restaurant. Extremely busy but managed to get a table just before the main rush. Hot chocolate and pot of tea was enjoyed, will we visit again? Maybe if we are in the area again.

Set in the basement this is not the brightest lit location. The food is normal M&S.; The staff appear to be overworked or maybe were on a go slow as the service is enough to cause customers to leave from the long queue before being served. Staff also seemed to struggle to clear tables as many had dirty dishes piled up (although some came from customers moving them from their table to free one). Overall typical M&S; so avoid unless you want to queue, get slow service and mediocre food

Went here with a friend as the scones at Jenners were like rocks and we had cheese scones which melted in your mouth, it was the first time I had been but will use again, also they were half the price of Jenner’s !!

Our hotel was nearby and this became our “go to” for breakfast, snacks and afternoon tea. Great food, reasonably priced and tasty.

Visited mid morning for coffee. Not very busy BUT at least 14 tables had not been cleared. It really does let them down. Coffee is always good BUT yet again you have to ask for the complimentary biscuit. Clearly M and S is feeling the squeeze and saving money. Found this to be the same in England .

Very busy cafe but staff are very helpful a typical scone and jam for two people and drinks cost bout 20 quid roughly cafe very spacious so even though busy there's still room i say it's not suitable for pushchairs or prams as like I say very busy and just no space for them

Decent friendly service.Positioned behind the basement food dept. Hot items delivered to the table when heated. Latte's always very milky but are in huge cups even when ordered "small".

Popped down to the cafe today after browsing the great menswear collection and a lovely girl called Jenny served me a smoothie (the berry one). Well made, perfect consistency and a smile to go with it. Will be back!

We always lunch in the cafe when we visit Edinburgh ( at least 5 times per year). The food is of good quality and is reasonably priced and the staff are helpful and pleasant. It's quite smallish , in my opinion,but that's not a problem.

Went in today for a bite to eat with my mum,we both got a sandwich each,cup of tea each and a packet of crisps and it cost nearly £15,I thought this was very expensive for a sandwich out of a packet,I now wish we went else where.

I went there to get some light meal . I had couple of tomato basil soups and white coffee. Food was fantastic but service point of view was lacking. Server served my soup in the table without butter knife and soup spoon. I know it was busy and in the cafe plates and cups was lying all over there no body’s was picking . I have some off elder people was struggling to find the clean table .

Standard M&S; Café; good choice of food and drinks. It was very busy, and the staff seemed slightly 'on the run' but we could not complain about the counter service.

Called in for a light lunch after following misleading signs from the unusual floor layout. Plenty of choices and opted for soup and toasted tea cake with coffee. Soup was piping hot with 2 lovely fresh rolls. Plenty of seating and staff clearing the tables regularly.

The food in M&S; cafe is always very good but during December they clearly didn't have enough staff to keep on top of clearing tables. The area around the till was piled with used trays loaded with dirty dishes and the table was eventually managed to secure badly in need of wiping. The soup was excellent but the harassed waitress clearly hadn't noticed one portion had a missing bread roll and it was too busy to try to complain. Staff behind counter were obviously stressed and this was not a good M&S; experience.

The location was at the side of our Hotel and therefore we went down there for something to eat. we, my housband and went into the line and ordered a soup and bread. We paid at he cashier and got a tall number to put on our table. Few minutes later, after we found a table, a servant came with our order. It was tastefull and we went out shopping, satisfied and happy. The restaurant was ower crowded but the soup was good.

Went today at about 1p m and decided to have brunch. All day breakfast sounded a good idea, not so, toast completely burnt on one side, eggs like hard boiled ones, sausages burnt and tasted like they had been cooking for an hour. When i complained the waitress was quite rude. I got my money back but that did not make up for the terrible service and burnt food. I have been coming here for ages and keep hoping it will improve, no such luck. There are never enough people on the counter .

Visited the M&S; coffee shop in Braehead for a coffee and catch up with friends. As always, it was busy but we managed to get a table for six. It’s ok for a quick coffee and scone or cake, but the hot food is less appealing.

We use the Marks and Spencer's Cafe as a convenient place for a quick lunch or drink in the city centre. The selection is OK - its just a shame that they don't offer more of the sandwiches and salads on sale in the food hall next door as an option here.

Stopped in for a quick dinner on the way to our hotel. Amazing choice of food from quick snacks to full dinners. Orders are cafeteria style with food delivered to your table. Highly recommended for quality and value.

Had a late lunch here on a Saturday and had a 20 minute wait for our hot food to be served. Cafe was short on silverware. Our orders were satisfying in every way though. I got the chicken curry which was served on rice with fresh spinach leaves. The sauce had. Good taste and the portions were good. My friend got a cheese hot jacket (potato) which was served with a side salad and she was pleased with it. Nice thick curls of cheese on it.

I was in brehead marks Spencer's cafe and a just could not believe what a watched today very bad service only 2 people on the counters lunch time and everyone had to go up to hatch us it is suppose to be table service staff where very rude when a put in the complaint to them and to kick it off customers break out argument due to this dirty cafe tables bogging and women coming round trolley with black dress on it out of a comedy film has to change or a will not be back

Very typical of M&S; cafes I was not expecting anything different. ...including how busy it was. Food was good typical M&S.; Soup delicious...a nice lunch time rest.

A very handy cafe accessible from both Prince's and Rose streets. Menu is simple, service is brisk and the atmosphere quite pleasant. Recommended

Called for light refreshment before going to the Edinburgh Tattoo. It was close to their closing time but there was enough on show for a light snack. Like all M&S;, things aren't cheap but you can usually count on quality. A latte and an americano were reasonably tasty and didn't take forever to prepare (take note Costa).

Like M&S; stores everywhere there is a good selection of freshly made sandwiches available every day. The quality is always good and the best ingredients are always used, so you will pay more than at other outlets if you want the best.

We called in for a snack en route to a show in the Edinburgh Festival. Quite busy but served fairly swiftly and courteously. Pleasant food and drinks in a fairly nice environment. Well worth a visit especially when everywhre is busy diring the Festival..

While waiting for my wife to finish her shopping spree I crept away to the M &S; cafe for afternoon tea with scones and cream,The tea pot gave me two full cups of tea and the scones were fresh and tasty,

So cold and dreary in the basement. Why is this not on upper floors with views over Princes Street Gardens. Would certainly attract customers with so many better eating places to go! Food was look warm but tasted ok. Service very very slow.

This is a really nice cafe, plain and simple. Nothing fancy, not very cozy but we had the chicken salat and it tasted nice

Located in this fine Prnices Street Store, M&S; produce yet again another fine restaurant suitable for all visitors.

M & S seem to like in placing their cafes in basements, probably because a number of their food stores are on the same level. This store does have another, small bright cafe area on an upper floor, which benefits from natural light, and is accessed through Rose Street, on the same level. Rose Street is a lane parallel to Princes Street.
