Calls itself a bar, kitchen, but customers can't order at the par and have a "discretionary" 12.5% service charge. That is not a bar. No are conditioning available, despite it being a hot day and clearly having air conditioning units. No gluten free beer, which is unacceptable in 2023 London (especially Hackey).

Poorly presented margaritas (salt all over the glass rather than on the rim). Thin, unimaginative, overpriced, menu that doesn't favour non-meat-eaters and hasn't changed in many years. Some staff officious and unfriendly (though others are pleasant). So it's tolerable for al fresco drinking on a sunny afternoon as it has the best position on Broadway Market, but otherwise no. I wish owners/management would notice the poor reviews and up their game as it's a waste and a shame

I’ve eaten in this cafe pre-kids (mine are 20 months old and it was okay. Since taking the children, I’ve noticed how rude and awful the service is from the two older staff (I say this because the younger people try hard to rectify it). In the summer, I tried to take my two boys in for some brunch/lunch. The man looked at me with the pram and, after asking if I could take a four seat table, I was told “as it’s just you, no”. I thought it was disgraceful. My partner and I attempted it again this morning with the twins and we were made to feel nothing but an irritation. Raised eyebrows, funny looks, stepping back as if we were in the way. We ordered smashed avocado for the boys which came sliced. When asked the woman told us to mash it ourselves and walked off. The food was average at best but the prices remain high. It’s was a hugely uncomfortable experience. I can’t fault the younger staff but based on the two older managers, we will not be returning. Their attitude is a disgrace.

They seem OK up until you start asking about the Menu, I have had another experience here before, decided to overlook and and give another chance when I asked how our coffee's were doing , I was told they were very busy. quarter of an hour later, asked about breakfast only to find that the order hadn't been put in. Just gave up at this point ,very grabbing.

I have been several times to this cafe unfortunately, and every single time have received extremely rude service, very very slow service and extremely average to below average food. The last time I came with a friend (both with babies) the waitresses made it abundantly clear that we were not welcome (it was more than half empty and a rainstorm outside), to the extent that we felt we had to leave before ordering. I will never waste my money in this place again and urge travellers to search elsewhere for a good restaurant in Hackney.

To detail our recent Market Cafe experience would be to rehash the rude manager's remarks to not only us regarding our meal but also to the dishwasher downstairs, the stale toast, salty salad (how?!), oddly colored hollandaise, and underdone shakshouka. Our waitress was kind but had no control over the quality of the food or wait time (about an hour). I would avoid this cafe at all costs.

My daughter brought me here for brunch on a crisp, sunny winter’s day. The exterior is modest as is the interior, no fancy signs or gimmicks. Just simple, comfortable canteen furniture with large windows. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed, so you can enjoy a good conversation. The staff were friendly and efficient. The menu had all my favourites: freshly squeezed orange juice, eggs Benedict, full English and all the usual teas and coffees. We both went for full English and it was excellent. The food arrived within 10 minutes. Perfectly cooked scrambled eggs, mushrooms cooked in lightly salted butter, grilled tomatoes sprinkled with oregano, a generous portion of tasty sausage , whole meal toast, bacon, proper baked beans and a hash brown. It was all cooked and presented as you’d like it at home. The cappuccino was smooth and the orange juice had just the right balance of acidity and sweetness. We left the cafe extremely happy and satisfied, then walked all the way down the Regent’s Canal to Limehouse. Perfect. Very highly recommended.

I’ve been visiting this place for years, and recently I have noticed a huge dip in the standard of food and service. The prices have gone up, and the quality of the food and service has dipped massively. Really slow, bad service from the staff, with drinks and food taking unnecessarily long to arrive. When our burgers arrived, it was very clear that we were served over-cooked, shop bought burgers. Really disappointing. I’d recommend taking your money to somewhere decent like Bistrotheque. I truly wouldn’t bother going to the Market Cafe, it’s a total waste of your money and time.

We visited today and did not stay to eat nor would we ever bother to return. The waitress was appallingly off hand despite the place being empty. Had a delicious meal but when the bill came we couldn’t understand how it amounted to so much. We queried it with the barman who was initially dismissive and then became aggressive when we presented evidence that we’d been overcharged. (Charged £15.30 for a veggie burger that was priced at £11.90 on the menu. The cheap, bad wine was completely overpriced too - conveniently no price on the menu though). Barman acknowledged that the menu price was wrong but refused flat out to refund us, telling me he was the manager and that if I was that bothered I should “email the owner”.

The location of market cafe is great and the owner was very friendly. The vibe is good, though loud, but the service and the food were both pretty poor. We went for Sunday brunch and all had cold eggs, the avocado was tasteless, and the one piece of toast was too thick, impossible to cut, and all a bit so-so. My partner asked for marmelade instead of ham and they tried to charge him for it. That’s just an embarrassment. I paid £6 for extra smoked salmon and ended up with the rough skin bits. The service could not have been less welcoming, and one of our two servers was wearing a t-shirt so dirty that I wouldn’t wear it to clean my house. It’s clear from reading other reviews that Market Cafe is very hit or miss. A shame, because they were very busy, and have enormous potential, but they need hot food, and staff who act like they want to be there, and more importantly, that they want *you* to be there!

Seated outside on a sunny day but our problems started when we wanted a menu. It was impossible to get one or catch anyone’s attention. When my husband went inside to ask for a menu the guy said ‘give me a chance mate, we’re busy!’ in an aggressive way. I wish we’d left at this point but we decided to persevere. When we finally got a menu, the guy disappeared as soon as he could and we didn’t have a change to order drinks. After waiting ages to order we asked to sit inside in the hope of better service. We should have known better…Whilst waiting for what seemed like an hour, but was in reality was a good 15 minutes, to order we witnessed the first guy being rude to a table near us as they complained about an incorrect order and the table next to us complaining that their food was stone cold as it has been left in the pass for ages. The Table opposite got the wrong drinks, the table next to us got the wrong drink twice and the right one still hadn’t materialised by the time we left. When we finally ordered our food it came quickly and was ok, although my cappuccino was burnt. I wish could say it was because they were busy, but at one point I counted more staff than customers! A stressful and chaotic experience in a badly run café. Won’t return and would recommend other people try one of the many places around the market.

Before we visited the Broadway Market, we had breakfast here. The place was crowded, so that's always a good sign. But not in this case. The reviews on Tripadvisor are mixed. We had the poached eggs with avocado on toast. The avocado and eggs were perfect. The toast however was too hard. The knife couldn't cut the crust, not even when the egg yolk covered the toast. A different kind of knife would have helped, but no other kind were available. We were seated by a nice person. But the service was done by a waitress that didn't have a passion for her job. The place is clean, but don't visit the toilets. The toilets need renovation and cleaning. So, I have a mixed, confusing feeling about this Cafe. On both occasions the service was pretty appalling- from walking through the door to eating breakfast was just under an hour...we also had to stop staff to order after 25 mins and asked a couple of times for water...this place also adds service automatically- I might go back (e.g for a lazy brunch with the papers) primarily because the location is great and food is generally good- definitely not if I was in a rush though.

A group of friends and I decided to have brunch at Market Café last Saturday morning. The interior of the café is perfectly fine and the food itself was edible. However, we were surprised to see a bizarre rule surrounding substitutions in breakfasts, meaning any change led to an increase in the price by a set rate of £2.50. My friend is allergic to eggs and tried to substitute these for another item, but was not allowed by the waitress. This act led to myself and my friend having to buy 'customised' English breakfasts, which came to £15 each, for merely trying to swap one item. After a decidedly average brunch, we all paid separately and did not pay the discretionary service charge. A waitress (who seemed very experienced, and who we suspect may have been the manager), came over and accused us of underpaying. Upon examination of the bill, we realised the shortfall was the service charge. We stated that we would not be paying it, but she kept repeating "yes, but there's a service charge". After stating explicitly to her that the service charge was discretionary, as stated on the menu, she stormed off and appeared to rant in an irate manner to colleagues. Her expectation that we would pay the service charge was a joke, especially in light of the average nature of the brunch. Particularly, we felt waitress spoke down to us because of our age (we are in our mid-20s). I would suggest you avoid the Market Café. Broadway Market is a wonderful and vibrant area, with so much on offer. Weekends are far too short for overpriced, average brunches served by sanctimonious staff who will moralise over you not paying an [undeserved] service charge! So, in short: avoid, avoid, avoid!

We were on a brunch hunt yesterday, and with people always pouring out of the cafes along broadway market, yesterday was going to be the day I tried one. Market Cafe is located at the beginning of the broadway markets. On offer was all day brunch which is great, as you have the choice of sweet or savoury. Now this is where maybe i mis-read the menu. When you are hungry for brunch, you are looking for that substantial, delicious dish that will keep you full to the afternoon. However on this occasion this wasn’t the case. I ordered the Salmon Gravlax, with heirloom beetroots and rye. For £12 I was sorely disappointed. Literally all that was served was salmon with dill, a weird rye crumb down the middle and some beetroots. To be honest – this was not a salad and was no open sandwich which when saying rye — I assumed bread to be served. Maybe I should have asked to clarify? Although I felt this was not a complete dish, literally salmon and beetroots. Would you be happy if that was served to you? With regards to the eggs royale, my dining partner says the eggs were cooked perfectly however the hollandaise just lacked seasoning. We cant complain about the juices. They were refreshing and offered a lot of flavour. The cafe itself has a nice atmosphere, I just think it would be great to see the salmon dish to be more substantial – whether served with bread or actual green leaves as a salad. My other suggestion is, maybe update your menu description to be more clear for future diners, if you are going for the more minimalistic dishes. This cafe has potential, just a few changes would really make it awesome.RatingFood: 5/10Service: 7/10Value for Money: Average2 Broadway Market, London E8 4QJOpening Hours:Mon-Fri: 11am-11pmSat: 10am-MidnightSun: 10am-10pm

My partner and I went to this place as we were craving steak (we're usually vegetarian) and they had it on their menu. The steak was a bit pricey- £20 so we figured it would be extra good. We asked to swap out the chips that came with it for some sort of salad or vegetable and were treated with a few pieces of rocket next to our steak. The steak was 1/3 fat, averagely sized and ok tasting. We were very underwhelmed and still charged full price despite complaining. I rated this place 2 stars because the location is good and I guess they have to rip customers off to pay for the rent.

This restaurant has always been hit and miss but after today we shan't be back. The staff are miserable, sour faces and no apology for any of the 3 mistakes we had over our breakfast. Avocado was mostly hard, shouldn't have been sent out, the poached eggs were boiled and they mucked up our order 3 times. We are not ones for complaining normally and would have let this slide if the staff had given a damn and were friendly. Overall a disappointing experience.

Other than the fact that the service was RIDICULOUSLY slow, my steak arrived well done in stead of rare and the chips and bernaise sauce was INCREDIBLY salty! Generally poor food and slow service and I wouldn't go back

Stopped by for an early dinner. Awesome drinks. Very good service. Unusual menu but very tasty, Jumbo hot dog for my granddaughter. Excellent grilled hake for me and a very tasty cheeseburger for my son in law. Would definitely stop by here again,

I had passed this place a hundred times and was certainly impressed with hoe it looked from the outside. I decided to go in tonight and was not disappointed with the atmosphere. It wads Monday so quiet but friebdky bar staff and the bar Hausa. Try nice old fashioned decor. Trying to get to the 1950s and does so. The bottle ands half of wine I shared was really pleasant with out being anything to write home about. I would like to try the food here at some point.

Popped in for a coffee, but the Market was on, (worth a visit) and was told we had to have food if we wanted a table. Coffee was awesome. I am not local, so it came as a bit of surprise when I saw the prices of the food, so it either normal for the location, or by Southern standards, a tad expensive, and by Northern standards, face slapping expensive for what was on offer. The menu looked nice, but sadly wasn't Gluten Free friendly, which did surprise me for e trendy London place. It was full of twenty/thirty somethings (without Children) mostly couples or groups of couples primary. The seating area was cramped, due to the busyness, but then so was every other cafe, and likewise the service understandably slowish, but friendly and pleasant. However, I had a creme brûlée just to keep them happy in ordering food, and its was very nice indeed. So, I would go back for the fantastic coffee, and creme brûlée, and put up with the rest.

Feeling a little peckish after a morning of intrigue at Broadway Market, my friends and I popped in here for some food. Being Saturday lunchtime the place was pretty busy, however the service we received was timely and friendly. The ham hock I ordered was very tasty, just what was needed on a cold day, washed down with a jug of potent, yet easily drinkable cocktail, all very reasonably priced. Definitely worth stopping by if visiting Broadway market.

Now this is a hip cafe where you definitely have your smashed avocado on sourdough and granola (what were we eating before these entered our lives?)We were there for a late breakfast (no, not brunch), cosy atmosphere with friendly folks working. We ordered granola with Greek yoghurt, berries and honey (6 pounds) and the quinoa salad with yams, spinach, pomegranates and beetroots (7.5 pounds). They were served in old school metal bowls and both dishes tasted good but again what could possibly go wrong with mixing the granola? We had long blacks (2.20 pounds each) and I must say I did not enjoy the coffee at all. It was too watery for my taste and the coffee got immediately cool because of the wide cups they use. I'd say there are better places for coffee on the same road - which I have found out in the following days. But it seemed like there are many drinks and meals on the menu, one should give it a go. For our simple breakfast, it was average.Nevertheless, it is a charming place, great for long sit ins!

Breakfast is not bad and is not spectacular. The quality of food is decent. Fresh pressed juice is pretty good. Staffs are pretty nice. It has a long queue on the weekend. So expect to wait in queue. If not plenty of places to choose from around Broadway market. Walk around and check out other places. You might decided not to wait in queue.

Simply lovely meal in a trendy part of London. Oh how Broadway Market has changed but actually like it more now. Market Cafe is a great place for casual food with friends, the wine was great too!

We stopped for coffee and that was excellent. We also took some small pastries with it and that was a perfect match.

I came to this cafe with high hopes, as I always expect broadway markets to have a high standard of food, coffee and service. I left this cafe feeling like I did not have a very good experience at all. It started with bad service, made our orders and ordered eggs bennedict and a flat white. While my girlfriend ordered a full english and a cappuccino. First the coffees came out at a reasonable time, they were of bad quality. They could do so much better with their coffee it is kind of a shame for the price you pay. Next we waited for way too long for our food. There were not many people in the cafe and the food literally took over half an hour. When the food came out it was of average quality and once again definitely was not worth the price we paid. Staff were friendly but not very good. Overall bad experience.

We sat outside on a Saturday evening as Broadway Market closed down for the day. It's a very popular venue with great music and a big selection of drinks, some I've never seen before. Staff friendly too. Great for people watching, on the corner of the main market road.

I had reasonable but not high expectations for this place. It looked good from the outside and was reasonably priced with a decent menu. The coffee was very average. Not terrible, but it way way too hot, wasn't double shot like I ordered and just generally lacked the quality you'd expect in central London. The pancakes with banana and bacon were also pretty mediocre. They were over cooked and just didn't really taste that great. They came with a reasonable amount of bacon and banana but I wouldn't bother getting them again. Staff were friendly and efficient. But due to the bad coffee and average food I wouldn't bother coming back. So many amazing alternate options on Broadway market.

Enjoyed brunch here on market day. Great eggs florentine and benedict, and a tasty ham hock dish. Big mugs of tea and good coffee and friendly service. It's nothing fancy - formica topped tables and bare wood floor, but it is clean and well decorated and has a warm friendly atmosphere. The market is well worth visiting, and this is a great place to finish up.

The staff are friendly enough but the food is very over priced for what you get, even in London. 2 eggs on a basic white muffin with a bit of salmon (not what I ordered) was £9 - and they can't really use the "best quality ingredients" argument either, because I've had better in a greasy spoon. If you're around Broadway Market there are plenty of great options, this isn't one of them.

Thankfully I ate here before looking at reviews and I am somewhat flummoxed by the bad ones. We visited with our son who lives locally and thought the menu was varied and interesting, the service prompt and friendly and the food very enjoyable. We had padron peppers, crispy chicken skin and chicken wings followed by burgers and salt beef on marbled rye. All very tasty along with delightfully crisp fries. Dessert was frosties ice cream,Chocolate tart and strawberry posset. Enjoyed everything and three courses for three of us, plus drinks and coffee came to less than 70 pounds.

Terrible food - like your teenage child had taken to cooking - soggy deep fried squid, confused salads, and a caesar salad that involved melted cheese on half a lettuce. Polite but totally clueless staff - didn't know the menu, announced the kitchen was taking a break because they couldn't handle orders (the place wasn't full). It was as if the place was run by people who had no experience of a pub or restaurant or cafe business. Will never ever go back.

We were outside won a Monday day. Cleared the table ourselves and got our our water and menus. Good start. Ordered some food and drinks - extremely rude and un-accommodating. Food was over chillied to the point we couldn't eat it. It was just oil and chilli. The salt pepper squid had a consistency of sand? Was still tasty though.More friends joined us and we got aperol sprites with no orange and the tray was left on our table. Just plonked down really. It was about 6pm by now and all the new staff were amazing. I guess you just have to watch out for who's working.

I wanted to like this place so much but the quality of the food was very low. The menu had ambitions beyond the apparent ability of the kitchen.

Quite possibly the best night out I've had in a long time. Good simple food to start. Great comedy. Then fun music from the 70s and 80s and 90s to finish. Highly recommend.
