Fantastic place, spent a lot longer in there than I intended. And considering it was free, I only have one word. Fantastic. Well worth a visit if you're in the area. Parking nearby is very very expensive £3 per hour but if you can, park a little further away and walk 10-15 mins. It's saved you a fortune. Soo much to see 😍

Very very interesting about the history of British maritime exploration. The section on the Titanic is very well done. The coolest thing is an underground space where you can enter an environment identical to the ships that emigrants took to America or Australia. Free entry and location is great on the docks.

Very interesting, especially the Titanic and Lusitania exhibits. The museum is huge, with loads of see, and all for a donation. Nice. You will definitely need at least a few hours to see stuff here. The only negatives for me was: firstly the odd layout of the exhibits. It often felt like we had come in at the wrong end and had to back-track. Secondly, no map of the museum, this would have been handy for navigating our way around. Thirdly, next door to the beginning of the Lusitania exhibit was a WW2 exhibit which had sound. I'm sure it was meant to be ambient, but it was very loud and quite annoying (howling wind noises). (4/9/24)

This museum introduces the history of Britain as a gateway to the world from various perspectives. The book covers a wide range of maritime topics, including the history of shipping, the slave trade, and customs, and delves particularly into the history of the Port of Liverpool, which flourished as a maritime city. Main features of the exhibition content Connection with the Titanic: As the Titanic was registered in Liverpool, there are detailed exhibits about its history and tragedy. History of shipping: Exhibits show how the Port of Liverpool developed into one of the world's largest trading ports, as well as models of various ships. Slave Trade: The history of the slave trade and Liverpool's involvement is also touched on, making you think deeply about the social issues of the time. Customs: Introducing various aspects of the sea, including the history and role of customs, smuggling, and more.

The museum is absolutely packed with stuff, so a good deal of time to get around. iads of very interesting exhibits, although the bit on the Lusitania went an a bit. The Battle of the Atlantic section neatly complements the Western Approaches HQ museum, and the sections on maritime trade was fascinating. One criticism is that we found the layout incredibly confusing, we always seemed to be enter the exhibits from the wrong end and the floor arrows seemed to assume you were coming from the lifts? Sometimes the arrows pointed in two directions at once! That apart, it is well worth a visit.

Visited here today and was enjoying it until we were hearded out like sheep. At quarter to 5 an announcement came on saying we are closing in 15 minutes, not even 2 mins later a female member of staff turned up saying we are closed now so you need to leave. I noticed we still had 15 minutes until closing so tried to finish reading one of the displays and the staff member came over again and told us to leave and she wouldn't move until we were gone walking behind everyone until it was empty. When we got to the ground floor the gift shop was well closed and staff all hanging round waiting to go. I asked another staff member why they were chucking us out 15 mins early just told be told you need to leave as we need to be out by 5, I pointed out that it says close at 5 not staff leave at 5 and was told again staff have to be out by 5.

We came to Liverpool and specifically wanted to visit the maritime museum knowing of Liverpool’s central role in the slave trade and Britain’s merchant marine operations during both world wars. It covered the Battle of the Atlantic and merchant shipping well and the coverage of the sinking of the Lusitania was detailed and enlightening, especially on the effect of the sinking on the people of Liverpool as crew members and families. The coverage of the slavery aspects was a little less strong but I expect it will develop. The stories are powerful and need to be told. Lighting for a number of exhibits was below par making it hard to read some labels. The museum itself was easy to find, easy to walk to other attractions and the staff friendly. Good wifi for travellers. Overall worth the several hours we spent here.

Wow! There is so much to see in just one Museum! We came in just after lunch and still got in a time crunch already having had to skip some parts, because there is just so much stuff to learn and look at: from the history of the Liverpool Docks to Liverpool during the world wars, the Lusitania, the Titanic exibit PLUS the International Slavery Museum. In my honest opinion, if all of this sounds interesting to you, you might want to come twice. And don't skip on the Slavery Museum just because it is at the very top/end of the museum, it is also a very well thought out museum.

Great museum to be sure based on the exhibits available … but it clearly is not being maintained to be world-class (as it should be). There were lighting problems all over the place, making it near impossible to read the information beside the exhibits (I had to use my phone’s torch many times). There were many pull-outs beside exhibits to show more artifacts - none of them had any lighting. There were a lot of actual/copies of handwritten letters - that were impossible to read (faded and/or poor handwriting), but literally no transcription for most of them. Quite a few of the video presentations were not working. The museum is free, which, of course is good to get visitors in, but it’s either lacking in funding and/or good management to track and resolve all the problems.

There's SO MUCH to see here! Spread over 4 floors including the basement there's definitely something for everyone. The highlight for me was Seized, which focuses on border controls and customs. I also loved that they have items from the Titanic and the history of the Luisitania which I didn't know much more than the basics about. Another small part I loved was the video showcasing the MV Derbyshire and the changes that have been made following the enquiry, which I really recommend watching in full. Very rude staff. They made an announcement that the museum was closing so we immediately headed for the stairs to exit, when a member of staff walked past and said word for word “can you leave now please, I want to go home” as if we weren’t literally on our way out. I would understand if we were just hanging around or looking at more of the exhibition, but we were actively leaving, and even if we weren’t, he still could’ve approached us with kindness instead of being hostile. As a side note, the museum had made an announcement at 4.45pm that they were closing in 15 minutes, then at not even 4.50pm, they said it was closed now. Why make an announcement saying there’s more time than there is, then have staff be cheeky when you can’t teleport outside in 0.5 seconds 🫠

We got a takeaway here and it was the best Indian takeaway we’ve had for a long time! I get a chicken tikka masala which is usually really sweet and overly dyed (bright red) from other takeaways, but this one was authentic and the perfect amount of spiciness for me. Good value for the quality, and even though we’re 20 mins from the city, it was delivered piping hot. We will definitely be back!.
