This place does by far the best chips in Plymouth without a doubt!! The fish has lots of flavour and a good potion size to with Lovely crispy batter. And the Gravy in this place is amazing. I found my new go to chippy and also the owners are very friendly and welcoming.

Had a full day out so thought we would grab chippy for tea. I seen other people fish before so thought we would give it a go but I feel disappointed and ripped off. It wasn’t much bigger than a jumbo sausage and was mainly batter ( very thick soft batter) I don’t mind sausage and chips here etc but after paying £12.60 for cod and chips and curry sauce I am not impressed. Seemed a lot of money for the portion tonight.

I’ve recently moved to the area and was passing by and thought it smelt lovely so I popped in. My order was simple. Just a regular chips. Firstly, £3.50 for a regular chips is a rip off. I was told it would be a few minutes wait for the chips and got a bit exited as I knew they’d be fresh when I got home. About 3 mins later my order was complete and I was walking home. Got home all exited to eat my chips. Only To open them up and discover that they were literally anaemic. They had no colour on them whatsoever and still looked frozen. I took one out of the bag and ate it. And lo and behold. It was partly frozen still. I would’ve gone back but it was closed by the time I had gotten home and realised they wasn’t cooked properly. Bitterly disappointed at this. The amount of salt and vinegar was poor as well I asked for extra and got barely anything. This is coming from someone who used to work in a fish and chip shop too. Won’t be going again any time soon.

The batter around the fish was not cooked properly, it was soggy, and spoilt the meal, Had to peel it off the fish and bin it making the remaining fish much smaller because the uncooked batter stuck to the fish. This is the second time it has happened so will not chance it again.

Very disappointing, very expensive and not much taste. We were in Plymouth visiting relatives on Tuesday 22 May around 6 pm. We are from Hartlepool and we were disappointed in what we bought

Found a black hair in my food not happy

First time I had been here for a very long time. I heard they had new owners... Staff were friendly.. Michelle was lovely to talk to while I was waiting for the freshly cooked food... The food itself was great. Tasty . Fish was perfect ...Still hot when I got it home... Will definitely there again.

Very nice, they do all sorts, I enjoy there Haddock with a regular chips. Then when at home, its plenty of tomato sauce and a slice of bread and butter. Just 5 stars all the way so if your around Mariners fish n chips pop in and ask for Michelle .. 👍👍😁😁

Top notch food and service every time

Update April 2024: Definitely not what it once was, I'm sure it's no doubt down to trying to juggle costs and product quality, but after the last take away I doubt we will be using here again, everything was just very bland. Update March 2023: The quality of the food seems to have gone down hill recently. We first noticed this when the chicken kebab changed. This has definitely put me off getting it. We now tend to get a mix with the kebab shop a couple of doors down. Definate fall from grace. Previous review: One of the best chip shops I've been to in Plymouth, we've had quite a few things here since the new management, all of which were excellent. Definitely one of the nicest kebabs I've had in a looong time, even better that it's with proper chips. Here's hoping the standards are maintained.

Fish'n'chips for tea today. We do this about once a month or so. Mariners has been variable over the years but, right now, these people have got it absolutely nailed. Excellent fish, great batter, sensible chip portions. Makes for a really good value meal and always friendly service. Highly recommended.

Since being under new management the food is absolutely delicious. Definitely will use them again.

We used this chippy tonight for the first time in a very long time, we heard it was under new management so thought we would give it a go. We ordered 2 large cod and a small chips. It was cooked fresh while we waited. The first thing I noticed was the fact it didn’t smell fishy…fresh fish doesn’t smell, so this made me hopeful 😂anyway, it was nice and hot, very tasty and would recommend it.

Amazing service great food and big portions. The staff were lovely. The young girl that served us is doing a great job.

This evening we got x2 fish and chips. Shop is under new management so wasn't sure what it would be like. Well the staff are so friendly, the food was cooked fresh to order so no soggy chips or batter. It was really busy so shows how it’s improved. Was served by a young girl who was really friendly and had a lovely smile. Would definitely recommend!!!

The new owners and staff are so friendly and the portion sizes are great. Was fat and full after our trip on Friday. Will definitely be making it a regular Friday trip now . Thanks also very clean and efficient

Went here tonight just for chips against my better judgement. They were vile, like yesterday's re-heats. Been to this chippy quite a few times in the last few years. It is terrible and overpriced. I just keep thinking it must have got better, it doesn't. 6.00pm and no que must speak volumes.

Average chips no better or worse than most places apart from the price. Much more expensive than most. Only chippy in the area so no competition.

Sausage missing from order .Cold chips , fish with soggy batter . Presume this chip shop has changed ownership as it was so good .Worst fish and chips . Would definitely not recommend

Asked for large cod which I have had many times before and presented with a medium or small,also over cooked and batter over done.not impressed really for £8.50.

Perfect hot food for lunch, great service great food…always have chips for a chip butty and fish chip and mushy pea at the weekend for dinner.

Gone down hill, waited 25min for 2 pies to be microwaved after one bite they went straight in the bin!! The rest of the order was wrong when I got home and the batter literally slipped off my sausage because it was so full of fat, will not be going back

Really lovely little chippy. Great size portions and a good range of choices and the food is nice and crisp. Staff are really friendly and great with children. One of our favourites even though its not our local.

Haven’t been here for fish and chips since the Mortons sold it , what a disappointment, no nice crispy batter on the fish and seemed undercooked , chips a bit greasy and lukewarm . Would not bother going there again .

I had the absolute pleasure of having fish and chips today and they were absolutely Devine the batter light and airy fish cooked to perfection and the best chips I have had for a very long time complete with fresh lemon I definitely recommend this chip shop I will definitely be back oh and the standard of cleaning is excellent thank you very much

I notice there has been a few bad reviews about this local Chip Shop, the only thing I can say is that I have never been disappointed. All food has always been fully cooked and still piping hot after a 10-15 min drive home. The fish is always a proper fillet and the batter, mmm so nice and crunchy. My main happiness is the fact that the Gluten Free is cooked in a separate fryer meaning I am never poorly. Unlike some supposed gluten free foods from a ‘well known and respected’ Mutley chippy whose GF foods are cooked in the same fryers with everything else – no wonder I was so poorly for a few days after eating from there. Anyway 10/10 from me for this lovely chippy.

Used to be a good fish and chip shop until New owners. Just bought fish and chips and sausage in batter and chips. The fish was very very dry, the sausage in batter was warm and the batter was soft, and the chips were very hard as if they had been re-fryed. Would not recommend if you want to waste your money

We popped in last night as we fancied a Spam Fritter not many chip shops do these. Whilst we were waiting we couldn't help but hear this big lady server constantly having a go at the younger server. When the younger server said you have given me 4 items short the man behind the counter literally made her take out all of them and count them It was a normal size 8 and a childs size 6 = 14 which does make a shortage of 4. they did nothing about this then the older woman kept telling the younger one that she wasn't wrapping up the food properly. It is a disgrace!!! The Spam fritter was like a frisby so hard. Shall not be back. This needs sorting out as it is our local Fish & Chip shop.

The food was 5 star. It was just a shame to see all I can describe as workplace bullying. An older female member of staff was very frequently picking on one of the younger females, whilst also speaking in a very aggressive and in some cases patronising manner. I wish I had got their names however I’d did not as I didn’t want to have to stay in this environment. After this bully had been very aggressive multiple times the younger staff member had to temporarily walk away as they were quite clearly upset as it was obvious it’s not the first time they’ve been spoken to like this, upon returning this bully was being very sarcastic and patronising asking if they were ok and if they wanted to go home, just to try and make that staff member feel worse. There were 3 customers including myself, all 3 of which picked up on this behaviour, 2 of us made comments to the victim wishing all would be ok, which shows it’s not just me who picked up on this. I hope this victim gets some sort of recognition or reward for having to work in an environment like this. The older staff member was quite clearly a bully and should no longer deserve to be able to work within this business. To the victim, I hope all gets well soon.

Delicious here! Everything is super tasty and crispy and the chips are cooked perfectly every time with a good amount of seasoning. Best kebab wrap I've ever had, incredible!

Pretty good, definitely one of the better ones in Plymouth, I have had better but frankly not for many years.and not in Plymouth. I'd give it 7/10

First meal I've had here for ages and sooo disappointed. Fish was hot & fresh but very rectangular in shape, never seen a fish like that before!! And chips were cold and soggy. Server was grumpy and unhelpful, and if asked a question, just said "the menus all up there!!". Must admit the meal came very well boxed, the boxes probably cost more than the meals purchased put together!! Doubt I'll return, majority of meal was not as expected or edible and certainly not worth the money

Used to be really good up until new management now it's just not Chicken nuggets are now chicken balls and so greasy I could drain them and fry an egg batterd sausage is more like undercooked meat in a pastry wrap and if you order piece of chicken expect it to be fried within an inch of its life and taste like dish the only good thing is the chips which are a good portion size

Tryed Mariner fish and chip shop in Plymouth today as they have just reopened and all I can say is disappointing. When Alfred was there the chips were alway hot and fresh. Today was the new take over from Alfred, the chips were warm and tasted reheated, not enjoyable at all. We will try them once more and if this is the same, then we will find another local chippy. It does seem a shame as the portion, freshly cooked chips you had from Alfred were the best.

It's been great for some time now. The batter is crispy and tasty, the fish is really good. Chips are chips to me but they are done well not burnt or taste of oil. Very very good.

Deary me I’ve heard of last nights chips but the chips and battered sausages we just had were at least 3 days old, the salt was staggering ! Was like eating a salt lick clean on the shelf store and chasing it down with some smelling Salts The battered sausages wow ! You could of smashed a window with them and the Fish even the cats hated it, expecting proper bad poos all round tomorrow I’m truly offended at the awfulness of this place I mean it’s comically bad ! Now I’m a fat geezer and I don’t leave food ! But this was something else If I had a choice of eating this or poo for the rest of my life I’d eat poo gladly Do not ever go here ! If they offer a happy ending with every fish and chips still go hungry !! Mariners deserve to win awards for cleanliness and product consistency - I’ve NEVER had a bad takeout from these guys and believe me, I’m easily disappointed by food products that are great once and then never again. My friends and family would agree with this review. Keep up the great work guys! Great value for money too!

Working away and having to have takeaways is always a gamble, but this place was outstanding. Lovely piece of fish and a mixture of soft and crispy chips. Definitely one of the best chippys I've been to and if I was working in Plymouth again I'd definitely go back.

Me and my partner drive all the way from Whitleigh, just to get fish and chips here. Since it being taken over, the portion sizes are as generous as there prices.

Great fish and classic chip portions, a rare treat for me but well worth the wait.

First vist and we ordered for5 adults 2 kids and all the food was hot and tasty and only took 20 minutes from order to collection, will definitely be back .

Tried this place tonight and was the worst fish and chips I’ve had in a long time, not only that but our order was incomplete and when I went back to complain the server was very rude. This used to be a good place but has gone down hill massively, would not recommend at all.

Purchased fish chips and jumbo sausage X2, definitely gaps in their holding process with temperatures as one was ok yet the other was cold. Large portions with the chips but as 50% are “bitty” and hard they are inedible. My wife called the shop only to be argued with and apparently it is impossible for this to have happened! Tried them a few times now and same every time. Sadly will never use again. Shame as i only live 2mins from the shop.

Went in for 3 small fish and chips, a small portion of chips will do 2 people, they are that massive! And a small fish is the size of a baby shark haha fish done to perfection and chips yummy too. When you first look at the menu, u think it is expensive, but wait till you open up your meal and see the huge portions, and it is actually really good value. Highly recommended!

Paignton Store - My first order was not delivered and I had someone else's order offered to me. A member of staff did make the effort and bring a full refund to me with the food (even though it was cold). The next time I was told we would receive a discount for the inconvenience. This never happened. Afraid to say the food is nice but the service is shambles.

Went in to try for the first time and was met with a very rude man who just nodded at me. I told him what I wanted and the only thing he said the whole time to me was "£5.60". No interaction, no please, no thank you. He turned around and said to the other man working "she wants gravy". He then in his own language said something very offensive about me and the other lady in the shop, he obviously didn't realise that I understood what he had said. As if this didn't put me off...A few days later the same man and a colleague were stood at the door of the shop smoking so people had to ask to get by to go into the shop. They then, without washing their hands carried on serving food to people. I don't think I'm rude if I say he was a plump man with no hair (that's nothing compared to what he said about me and the other lady!) Disgusting manners and disgusting behaviour.
