Mandarin Palace in Havering

My 17 year old son took his girlfriend for dinner. They served him 3 pints of lager without checking any ID and 4 hours later he was violently sick. I have phoned a few times but no one has got back to me. Won't be going in there from now on.

I have now visited this venue over a dozen times this year and I am yet to have a single poor dish. The staff are attentive without being overpowering and the pricing is very fair for the quality of the food they serve. Drinks tend to arrive swiftly as does the food courses and I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. Try it Guys!

Rude manager. Food absolutely below average. So we made an order mid week and accidentally ordered too early. We called the restaurant and explained. The manager said no problem, we haven’t started your order, I’ll cancel it this end and you won’t be charged. We then re-ordered and discovered a couple days later they had charged twice. When I spoke to the same manager a few days later he was rude and took zero responsibility. Just blamed Uber eats. He was rude and aggressive and hung up on me when I tired to explain the situation. Greedy. Thief’s! Paid twice for one lot of food which was below par anyway. Would never order again

Staff were nice polite and attentive. Overpriced food portions were small and the whole place was dated. It was ok but I would not go again… save your money and go elsewhere

My husband and I visited this restaurant for the first time on the 13/09/23. From the moment we walked In to the restaurant we were immediately made to feel welcome and the service was great throughout our time in the restaurant. The staff also accommodated any changes we asked for without any issues. The food was delicious and fresh at a good price. We will definitely recommend this restaurant to our family and friends. We are looking forward to coming back soon

It doesn’t matter if you dine in or have a takeaway, the food is the same fantastic quantity. It’s certainly not cheap but the quality is amazing. Mixed appetisers had good size ribs and spring rolls and you could see the prawns in the prawn toast. Special chow mein had lots of squid and prawns. For takeaway the food is carefully packaged with cling film around the sauces to prevent spills. Definitely worth splashing out for.

Definitely would not recommend this restaurant. The prices are over inflated and the managers very rude and entitled. The restaurant was dirty and not cleaned in years dust was everywhere and the furniture and decor was very dated. Ribs were dry, sparkling water was flat (which they amend they would not charge for) and the portions were sparse. We could not believe that the manager gave us a bag to put the leftovers he placed his hand on my nieces breast!! Then wanted to add a tip which we asked to be removed as we waited ages for the bill in an empty restaurant and of course they added the cost of the flat water they said they would remove. My tip is clean your restaurant, learn to provide a good service and don’t be vexed when the customer does not feel that you have and keep your bloody hands to yourself!!

After living in Hornchurch all my life, I decided to try the Mandarin Palace with a friend on a Friday night. We chose the set menu and asked one of the servers if we were able to swap some of the dishes on the menu (for other items which were similar in price) and she said that this was not a problem. When another server came over to take the order we were told that we were only able to swap 2 dishes. The starters were good (satay chicken, seaweed, ribs, spring roll, sesame prawn toast) and so were the duck and pancakes.. the main dishes did not live up to the same expectations sadly. The dessert from the set menu was fruit and a blob of vanilla ice cream and we asked if we could swap this dessert for just some ice cream but this was refused. It was tinned fruit and nothing special, cheap vanilla ice cream with some squirty strawberry sauce on top, surrounded by a grape, a clementine segment and a small square of melon. I did not see how two scoops of chocolate ice cream would have been an issue. It is very clear on the menu that a discretionary 10% is added to the bill, however we did not wish to pay the service charge as we felt that the service was not anything special (and the fact we weren’t able to swap tinned fruit for some ice cream also) and we had already paid enough for our food as it was more expensive than other places in the area. When the bill arrived, I advised that we are just going to pay for our food/drinks and we do not wish to pay for the service charge and the server asked what the problem was. I said that there wasn’t a problem, it is because it is discretionary. She said that she would have to get the manager and walked off. When she returned with the amended bill, this was in a stroppy manner, nothing further was said and we were made to feel unwelcome. We paid the bill and when we left no one said goodbye. We will not be returning sadly. Attitude around a discretionary service charge, when the food is expensive already and average is not really acceptable. Would maybe expect this charge from a restaurant in central London, but not from a local Chinese.

Dined last night for the first time after looking for good chinese food and having searched on the internet I am glad we visited the Mandarin Palace! Superb authentic food, very nice staff and very good service. We couldn't fault anything. The best lobster on crispy noodles ever, wonderful steamed sea bass with gnger and spring onions, amazing crispy belly of pork and Peking duck! What a treat! Can't wait to visit again

I visited this place for a bit of dinner the manager was rude on the phone when booking the table. but we thought we would still give it a try we arrived at the reastraunt to have to wait up to 15minutes to be seated which I found was terrible considering it wasn’t busy. We had finally got a seat it took them a while to come over and even take the drinks order it go to the point we waited so long for them to take the drinks order. We kindly asked the manager why we have had to wait so long. Which he told us he doesn’t have to explain my best advise is STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE

Visited here on Wednesday. Food was delicious and waiter/waitress really lovely. Not been here for ages but will definitely be back. Added bonus is their own car park right next door which is free.

We had a good night out and food was very nice. When it came to pay the bill I was handed the card machine asking whether I wanted to add a tip. When I looked a the bill service was already included. What makes it worse is we have been a regular to this restaurant and this was a senior female member of the waiting staff who should have known better The service was ok but didn’t warrant TWO TIPs - took the edge off what a good evening- why do this ??

Very simply put, the portions served here on a Friday night visit in May 2022 were half the size I expected and I am used to from other places. £100 for 3 people and we all left feeling we could have eaten a little more. Even my 78 year old mum mentioned how small the portions were. Quality of food was reasonably good. Service pleasant.

It’s been quite a few years now since our last visit but last night we finally went back to the Mandarin Palace in my hometown of Hornchurch. I can honestly say that we won’t be leaving it very long before we return again. We enjoyed great Chinese food along with excellent friendly service from every member of the team. We also loved a couple of old school touches that reminded you of years gone by. Let’s begin with our arrival which really set the tone for the evening. It was as friendly as you could ever want before being escorted to our table. Once seated we were immediately brought a large helping of prawn crackers. We then ordered a pint of carlsberg (80s) and a glass of rose wine while we looked at the extensive menu. We decided that despite the appeal of the set menu’s we would order of the main menu to which the waitress was very helpful and said what order the food could be brought to the table. It sounded great so we left it with them. We started with the Gourmet Platter of Five Delicacies ( satay chicken , bbq spare ribs , pancake roll , sesame prawns on toast & crispy seaweed ). We followed this with the with the Assorted Steamed Dumplings. We now moved on to the main courses where we had the Dried Crispy Pork Belly with hot chilli & garlic , Spiced Chicken in garlic sauce , Mixed Vegetable Chow Mein & Spicy Singapore Fried Rice. All the dishes were perfectly cooked and full of flavour. We then moved to dessert and I was in for an old school treat when I saw the Fantastica on the menu. This is a crispy chocolate base with layered vanilla & caramel ice cream , caramel sauce and dusted with chocolate biscuit. I followed this with another treat as they did a Floater Coffee. This brought to an end an evening of great Chinese food with excellent friendly service that makes this restaurant a real credit to not only my hometown of Hornchurch but hospitality itself. I would definitely recommend a visit and for one can’t wait to return once again very soon.

Visited the Mandarin Palace for an evening meal when lockdown ended. Fantastic food. Very good service. Made to feel most welcome. Very safe environment. Will definitely go again. Not the cheapest, but well worth it.

I've used Mandarin before and my children were over for dinner so we ordered out. We had too much! Duck, ribs, rice, curry, chick kung po, noodles, squid, chicken balls!! It was all tasty, and as usual the Madarin presented it nicely, food tasted fresh, and nice flavours. Decent local chinese food.

Had a takeaway on Sunday 31 Jan. for a 40th birthday. My daughter ordered via ubereats about 18.45. Received 17.20. Ribs very fatty, the noodles were a browny colour as if they had been left stewing. Spoke to restaurant who said they were rushed. Try to get a refund from Ubereats at least for their 10% service charge. Apparently we were supposed to claim within 48 hours (we were late) and attached photos so a NO from Ubereats customer services despite writing a poor review on ubereats website on the 31/1.Will not be using restaurant or Ubereats again. Very expensive lesson.

We recently has a take away from Mandarin Palace. The food was fantastic and the staff who took our call were so nice and friendly. It is not the restaurant we would normally get our take away from but the food was far superior to our usual. We will definitely be giving Mandarin Palace our custome in the furture.

Fancied a chinese takeaway and chose Mandarin based on some reviews in ubereats. Never used them before, and ordered a chinese chicken curry, some ribs and shredded duck. The food came in well secured boxes with the right dips and some prawn crackers. The food was tasty, curry was very good. Being picky the ribs were a little greasy and the curry needed some extra veg - there was loads of chicken! All in all, I'd use again.

Really not as good as it used to be! Over the last year I think the standards have slipped, food isn’t as good and staff can be rude. Food not as tasty, dry and quite bland, inconsistent and not worth the price. Such a shame.

Our friends booked a table for 4 for last night. Having never been there before I read a few reviews and to be honest was quite sceptical as the most recent weren’t great.All I can say is that perhaps given the current climate etc, these reviews are harsh. We had the full on menu, lots of courses, all timed to arrive at just the right time. Food was hot and really good quality, and I’ve eaten in a lot of Chinese restaurants around the world. Only towards the end did things become slightly rushed but then that was due to the 10pm deadline. Prices were no worse that a lot of restaurants generally these days so overall we had no complaints and would happily return again.

First time trying this restaurant, awful experience. Our duck was freezing cold and they said because of the weather! And because we ordered our food all together. They still charged us & after explaining to them they said no you still need to pay. Waiter was extremely rude and laughed in our face! when we said we wasn’t happy, he then said we don’t have to come here again!!! And even said we had to pay service charge! We was in such shock! Never ever again! Food wasn’t all that either for the price it was!! Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone!

After 30 years of coming to the mandarin palace I think this will be the last food not like it used to be dry ribs tasteless soup and chilli beef not good expensive over all Mateus rose £22.50 ...£6.00 in supermarkets (would except it to be £16.00 )and then they now put service charge on..£82.00 for a midweek meal that had a £10 special offer discount on sad to say it’s not was his was

Bit of a letdown for us found the Ribs very dry, Mongolian Lamb overcooked and very tough, same with the Shredded Beef could not eat it and Butterfly Prawns over cooked again, looked like the food was put together in a rush, but the waiter service was good, it was also very expensive will not return to this restaurant.

went here taking advantage of the Governments generous offer. Now the last time i was here was in December and I wrote a good report, okay nothing has changed the food was still to a high standard as is the service (to Chinese standards). What was noticeable that they have certainly taken the opportunity to increased their prices certainly by more than 10%. Also another little trick is they do not bring you your change!!!!!!

Socia distancing measures followed but taken at 1m food was of its usual standard which is good but we ordered the set menu which was way too much food for us. Have been going to Peking garden for 30 years and have never been disappointed. They are closed due to lockdown so visited here instead. Shall not be returning, hair in food is completely unacceptable especially considering the current circumstances. Surely hygiene should be of utmost importance. Waste of £40. Also below average taste. Very bland.

When for my daughters 18th birthday early to also enjoy Chinese New Year. Staff very helpful as we had many dietary requirements, Gluten, Vegan and red meat. They not only took great care to ensure no contamination with other food, but also wrote three new menus for us to see prior to arrival, making everyone feel inclusive. They also allowed the children to order separately which was very helpful as one was Autistic and would only eat the noodles. The food on the night was excellent and they included greater variety of food than on the menu. For me the sweet and sour sea bass was especially good. There was a band playing and singing happy birthday. Staff brought out the food at our behest, no rushing us. Then to cap of a perfect night there was a Dragon dance, followed by a New Year gift for everyone. Best restaurant I have been to of any kind given the quality of the food, friendliness of the staff, but also the efforts they went to, to accommodate us, exceptional.

First time here and it was New Year's Eve and our Wedding Anniversary, booked last minute. Very good food, the waitress who served us was exceptionally helpful, charming and efficient. We will be back.

Although one cannot rave about the quality of Chinese food as always it depends on the chef on the night so the food last night was no better or worse then many other good restaurants. What made this evening memorable was the service that we received we actually found Chinese people that SMILE

We had a set menu, we swapped a couple of dishes, which was not a problem and added a couple. The service was friendly and fast and the food was delicious. We will definitely be going again and the round tables are so much nicer for conversation.

Had a meal last night and noticed a woman sitting by herself being chatted to and attended very courtesly by the waitress. We could hear that she was chatting about her family and it was the first time she'd been to this restaurant alone. Staff then proceeded to help with her menu choice and even cut up her dinner for her. Here's the crux she was 98 years old and the staff couldn't do enough to help her and she finished off her meal with a brandy.The staff found out that she lived nearby by herself and actually walked her home and was shown around her flat.Our meal was superb and the staff amazing. Can't wait to go back again and hear if there was any follow-up to the ladies story. Wonderful attention to detail. Brilliant

Owner/manager took advantage of my sister being vegetarian, suggesting dishes on al a carte menu then as we didn't want soup and changed a couple of items he charged us all for the al a carte. He then gave us new cutlery touching the eating part of spoon and fork and chucking it down on table. Not impressed at all. Would not recommend or go back.

My husband and ordered a takeaway from here. 1 curry, 1 rice and 3 sides which came to £50! What a joke! And was by far the worst chinese I ever had! I dont know how this place has good reviews! Would never eat here again!

Wonderful evening we had the Jade Dinner for six people - the food was delicious some of the best we have had as a group - excellent waiters and staff - couldn’t have had a better Thursday evening - and to top it all one of the guys was given a Happy Birthday surprise cake and a song.will be definitely going back

Myself and two of my family went for mid week lunch, our second visit the first around four years ago which was a nice experience and l must say this second visit really cemented my opinion that this is one of the best lunch experiences l have had for a long time, we were given a wide range of choices which included 2 starters for each diner followed by soup of choice, a main course and desert all of which was excellent, the attentive service was first class and all this in the historic wood beam environment for the price of £13.50 each.....l will not leave so long before l return this time...

Attended a family party here & we were blown away by the standard of food & the caliber of the wait staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a brilliant night. This is a well established restaurant and the experience showed. The staff were efficient, friendly & professional. However the highlight of the evening was the food. Came here on recommendation of a family member . We had the lunch set menu. Priced at £13.50 for three starters, a main with a side dish of either rice, noodles and chips and dessert. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. Good choice on set menu and starters were ok. I had chicken satay, spring rolls and sesame prawn toast. The main was a massive let down. I had Kung po chicken. It was reheated dry and hard and egg fried rice which was also reheated and stodgy. I was suspicious from the off set off how a restaurant can provide a lunch menu that gives you ample choice and generous portions. I realised after t was most likely reheated leftovers from a previous time. Can see the kitchen from the back entrance and it didn’t look very clean. Checked out hygiene ratings after and realised after I had eaten here it was giving a 1 star rating. I won’t eat here again. Their are other Chinese’s near to this one which is much better

I've been out of the UK (in California) for 28 years but this is the best Chinese food I've had in all that time. We had a set meal for four (can't remember which one) and it was superb. Beats anything I've had in San Francisco's Chinatown.

Visited as a party of 8 including one child to celebrate a 60th Birthday on Saturday 16th June. Experience from start to finish was amazing. We had a lovely round table making it easy for us to all chat etc. The staff were very attentive and quick to supply drinks and prawn crackers. All of the food was absolutely delicious with very generous servings on the rice and chow mein dishes. We had a cake with us and the staff made a lovely fuss when bringing it out. Reasonable price a the end of the night too! Would definitely recommend and will be visiting again soon!!

Staff were very pleasant and welcoming. Service excellent. The food was good and well presented. I was a little disappointed with the lemon chicken - the chicken was very dry and the lemon sauce was in the form of a dip rather than part of the dish - but that was the only hiccup to what was a very pleasant evening. If in the area in the future I would definitely visit this restaurant again. Nice ambience.

I always come here on family occasions and it is amazing! Took my partner for the first time and he couldn’t believe how good it was. The staff are friendly, food is excellent! It’s pricey but worth it. Highly recommend it.

Disappointing visit. The food was average at best, chow mein very dry and chicken wings were tiny. Customer service was non existent. The interior of the restaurant is shabby, cob webs on ceiling etc. Won’t be back.

Been visiting this restaurant for years, and it is one of my favourite restaurants. Crispy chilli beef is amazing, and the roast pork Noodles are so nice. All accompanied by a lovely bottle of Sancerre. Great friendly services as always!

Went here for the first time with my other half and mum in law and sister in law. A lovely restaurant with such character with the wooden beams. Lovely and cosy. The staff were so friendly and helpfully let us have a break in between corses so you didn’t feel rushed. The food was of very high standard. Very good as not many restaurants sell the small bottles of pressco .

Food was nice - service was appalling. 3 hours to complete our meal.. The last hour and a half we were left without drinks. We waited for about 40 minutes to have our main course clutter cleared and not all the desserts arrived. We had to ask 3 times for the bill before it arrived and then they forgot to take the £85 deposit off. Was left feeling very disappointed with what should have been a pleasant family evening out.

Ive had two meals in the restaurant in the last week and on both occasions the food was outstanding, the service fantastic and the atmosphere very welcoming.

The lunch deal is good value. A change of staff has brought back the old Mandarin Palace style of service.

My family and I came here may years ago and returned for a birthday celebration. We ordered the Lotus meal at about £25 per head. This included mixed starter...soup. duck..a chicken..beef..fish and veg main. With rice or noodles. We are big eaters and ordered noodles as ell as rice and a sweet and sour chicken for my step son..we were told..thats enough food. Theres a lot there. Well that was a first for me being told not to spend more money. We could done with another couple of dishes as i didnt like the fish..the beef was tough and my step son polished off all the sweet and sour chicken. I liked the experience overall and would come back again..but probably order main dishes I want..not off the set menu.

The food in this chinese restaurant was delicious, the ambiance great and the staff attentive . Its nice that you can have a drink first in the VBar (just at the back of the restaurant) and they will then call you when your table is ready. Good choice of set menus.

Great food for a great price. These guys always come with a smile to a rubbish address, never missed anything from the order yet. Even though it's a fair drive, my food is never cold either! Salad was really fresh too! Would order again for sure.

My Boyfriend's friend highly recommended this restaurant and spoke highly of the dishes so i decided to give it a go.... truly the BIGGEST MISTAKE of my life. I would not go back even if they paid me. So disappointing, the quality of food specifically the Cantonese style duck tasted chewy like it was leftovers or reheated so many times to a point it is not longer edible. Cannot stress how disgusted I was with the meal. Not to mention the Har Gau (Dim sum) which tasted dreadful, not even edible. The only positive point I have to make is the friendly staff at the restaurant which did make the experience just a tad better. Definitely recommend people visiting another restaurant instead !!

40 mins late, forgot the chips and were rude when contacted

Lunchtime menu is super value for money. The selection is huge and the food delicious. Mandarin staff are so friendly and welcoming. This is a great restaurant for a quick meal at lunchtime or for a celebration meal with family and friends. Highly recommend
