This is our local fish and chop shop and usually we drive to another one as we didn’t have a great experience with this one a few years ago. Thought we’d try it again. Fish was lovely and fresh with light batter but the chips tasted like they’d been sat there for hours, they were all tiny crispy little chips, not potatoey chips so quite disappointed, especially for £17 something for 2 fish and chips and a battered sausage. This was 6pm so at peak time so would expect fresher chips. Would try again as 3rd time luckily but if it’s disappointing for a third time will probably give up.

Wanted to place a large order for collection. Emma couldn't have been more helpful. Food as always delicious, generous portions, great with allergens, fantastic service, thank you

My only complaint is that there is always a queue as they are so good! They are also cashless, so don't forget your card.

I wasn’t impressed at all, the portion size, the taste of the fish , it needs to be a bit less crispy on the batter I felt it was burnt. Took for ever also , I felt they needed important improvement,

Fish and Chips on Thames Avenue has been my go to chip shop every week since early 2018. Sometimes I pop down to the chip shop even when I don’t want chips, I enjoy the customer service and quality of staff working there. There is nothing the girls (and the recent addition of the boys) won’t do, nothing is ever too much for them. Their staff are friendly, funny and fantastic. They are always laughing and joking with one another, whilst remaining perfectly professional. Service with a smile always! Even when the shop appears insanely busy the staff keep their cool and get the job done! Enough about the incredible staff, who are an absolute credit to themselves and the management. The food… Food, glorious food! They have an extensive menu (which the staff have the most incredible knowledge about- especially with allergies) so all diets can be accommodated for. What other chip shop offers Gluten Free on a Monday, burgers of all kinds and even battered halloumi?! The portion sizes are generous, food is filling and definitely worth that extra bit of money. You get what you pay for, and you’re most definitely getting the hugest quality of food for not so much money in my opinion. Which other chip shop also offers delivery through Just Eat and a Click and Collect Service AND a covid safe and secure way of ordering at the door? The only place I can think of is Fish and Chips on Thames Avenue. They’ve won the good food award 2 (nearly 3) years in a row, and that wasn’t for nothing. The commitment and dedication which all staff have put into the chip shop does not go unnoticed at all. They have customers queuing from half past four on a Friday just to get their fish and chips to avoid a mile long queue- if that doesn’t tell you how good their food is, I don’t know what else will. The best of the best :)

Can't understand what all the fuss is? I normally go out of my way to County Fayre on York Rd which a little pricier than average but outstanding! . I decided to give Thames Ave a go as I live local, never again bog standard food, very small portions and the prices are astronomical!! For fish and chips you're paying at least £3 more than York Rd charges, and YR is with large chips and always freshly cooked, Quality! Il carry on going 3 miles out of my way to YR, or if I want local go up the hill to the Chinese chippy on Blair Parade, just as nice as Thames but a lot lot cheaper.

Ordered on just eat. Great value for money! Delivered promptly! Shame you have to order a meal? Some people just wanted chips not a complete meal. Meals start at £9.99.

Was very disappointed i ordered large cod & regular chips £11.99 plus £1.99 curry sauce and £2,49 delivery. First of all 20 mins late delivery and food not hot. Fish was more small/regular size definitely not large. To be honest only thing worth the money was curry sauce because at least hot and had some taste. Wont be ordering from here again

Excellent but smallb room to improve. Bit of a long wait with deliver guys coming in every other order.. seemed like long wait for just chips. My favourite chip shop in swindon.. great food. Didnt get asked for salt and vinegar though. I forgot to say because i expected to be asked like they usually do. So a bit annoying. But always like this place though Rand will continue to use it :)

Nice fish and chips HOWEVER we had to about 40/45mins!! As they were doing loads of Just Eat orders as well etc. WAY TOO LONG!

Best fish and chips in town by far, may have to wait a bit but worth it as it’s cooked fresh and to order. I use a couple of times a month and wouldn’t go anywhere else, top notch !

Not brilliant and have had better, sometimes the chips are spot on, freaky, hot and crispy and on other days the chips taste old, like they’ve been carried over from earlier on in the day, dry like cardboard. It’s such a shame, but the chips need to be made freshly. Unfortunately frequently (weekly) there’re not, I think tonight’s have been the worse so far and have decided to give up on this chippy due to the inconsistency in the quality of chips, sorry

The best fish and chips in town! Absolutely delicious. The batter was crisp and no trace of fat. Chips were just right. Prompt service. Good value. Recommended .

Visited this evening and I have to say I was very underwhelmed. We ordered some battered sausages, a portion of cod bites and two portions of chips. Upon seeing the 5 tiny cod bites come out of the fryer priced at £3.95 I immediately changed the order to a small cod. The cod bites were tiny, smaller than a chicken nugget and terrible value. The portions of chips were tiny, in a cardboard box and undercooked. The sausages were as cheap as you can buy, almost smooth texture without any clear sign of meat content. We usually go to Monica’s in St. Andrews ridge but as we were at my mums house we tried this as it is local, It’s much more expensive than Monica’s and nowhere near as nice. I wouldn’t go here again.

Excellent fish (Haddock) freshly cooked and reasonable chips. One piece of fish is enough for 2 people.

Second time in last 2 weeks stonecold chips in the new packaging. Last time I use as not only cold but small portion of chips when paid for large and far from fresh.

Started using this chip shop a few months ago and the food is always lovely however on our last visit they have started using polystyrene boxes instead of paper and our usual 2 portions of chips was not enough for the three of us as it was previously (also surely not as good for the environment), it’s a shame as such good food but will now cost us more so we will probably look for another place next time.

Since they decided to stop using paper to serve and wrap the chips I’ve noticed on each occasion now served in a box the chips go cold almost immediately, real shame, used to love this place but now have to travel further to Redhouse who still serve piping hot food wrapped in traditional paper, I wonder why it’s always been paper??? Perhaps it’s the only real way of keeping the air out and the heat in, tried and tested over many many years, if it’s not broke don’t fix it springs to mind. its totally unacceptable to get home a few minutes away and the food is practically stone cold, first time they made the change I gave it a go, second visit still the same so I thought teething troubles, third and final time, what a joke, One thing for sure I won’t be buying for the family again from what used to be Swindon’s best.

Always have large cod, the fish is beautifully cooked every time, and staff are very friendly. They have a very large menu. Food ordered on arrival into shop and then it’s cooked fresh. They have gluten free days.

This place is always heaving, not a complaint, after all that’s a sign of good food. The food is nice and service is as fast as they could possibly be ( 1 cooking and 2 serving). My only gripe with this is the portions are extremely small. I ordered a large chips which in any other chip shop I’ve ever been to wouldn’t even be a small!

We called in to have a chip supper, we ordered a sausage in batter and chips. The food was all cooked perfectly, the chips for me were a little small I prefer chunky chips. That does not mean the chips were not nice I just prefer fatter chips. The sausage was hot and tasty.

Heard good things about this chip shop so visited Sunday evening. The queue was quite long but I think this just goes to show how popular it is. The girls working behind the counter are an absolute credit to the management, working so fast and knowing exactly what they were doing. Apologised for the delay and were very polite even though they were rushed of their feet.

Having read quite a lot of reviews from social media and hearing about how great "Fish and Chips on Thames Avenue" is, I thought I'd try it out on their busiest night of the week. Having previously visited, and being a frequent visitor in fact, I was well aware of the high standards that Emma and her team meet. I phoned my order up and was greeted with the best customer service on the phone, Emma was accommodating and funny. Despite being a busy night, they answered quite quickly. I said I'd be there for eight o'clock and I turned up at five to. As soon as I entered the shop I was greeted with a chorus of "Hellos" and three shining smiles. My food was ready for me but I decided to have a chat with the two girls on takeaway as they took the other orders. The atmosphere within the shop is lovely, I wish they were not so speedy as I'd happily spend more time within there. I hope Emma and her girls realise the amazing job they are doing! The shop is always full of laughter, no matter what day of the week. Also, the food was beautiful. Beautiful food for next to nothing, quite literally as cheap as chips. I recommend the battered Oreos as they turn into little fudge cakes and are the best. Everyone who works at the shop are amazing. I will most definitely be back!

Ordered large cod and chips.got home was small cod and chips and no salt and vinegar which i ask for.rang them up they said come back and we will give you large.got home for second time chips where crap and cod was tasteless.oh and they forgot salt and vinegar again. Was best chippy in swindon but not no more

Fish always succulent and good selection of other mains, staff excellent and very friendly...always very busy, so sometimes you do have to wait

The range of food is extensive. Fish, sausages, pies etc as normal. You can have your fish in breadcrumbs (panko) which absorbs less oil and tastes very different. You have cook to order items also; burgers, onion rings, chicken. Good size portions, even for someone with a healthy appetite. Friendly helpful staff.

I couldn't eat my chips and pasty. Bi ordered this on 15/5/18 at 8pm. I said I would collect at 9pm. Lady came out of the door to give me my packet at 20.58. Very poor customer service and food inedible as loaded with an ocean of salt. Will Never return

Visited last Sunday after hearing lots about the amazing vegan and veggie menu and we weren't disappointed!! Lots of options and all freshly cooked and delicious! The staff were all lovely and happy to talk through the menu and the vegan initiative, and were interested in other suggestions they could add. It's amazing to see such a forward thinking Fish & Chip Shop and would 100% recommend!!

This was our first visit, and we’ll definitely be back. Lovely staff who welcomed us as regulars regardless. The vegan menu is extensive, and includes battered sausages, onion rings, potato fritters, chips, mushy peas, and curry sauce ... to name a few. Food was prepared quickly and was absolutely delicious. Generous portions, and great value for money.

Everything is cooked fresh but the slow service and long ques mean I haven't been back recently as don't want to spend 20 minutes waiting for my food after work in a chipshop full of people just as fed up of waiting as me. Fish & chips used to be fast food, on a Friday evening I was told my fish would be 5 minutes and 20 minutes later it was ready. Most fish & chip shops cook large quantity’s during peak time to make service quicker. Some people may be happy to wait but by the looks on everyone's faces there were lots of people fed up of standing around waiting for their order. I would love the service to speed up & improve as although this is my local, it’s quicker for me to get in the car and drive to another chip shop than wait around for 20 minutes.

I have given 3 stars as can’t fault the food BUT the service is so slow and the system is all wrong in my opinion. We walked in and the queue was big which is what we expected as we come in every week. You have one server on the till and wrapping and the other one is just writing things on a pad and telling the manager on the cooking side what she has to cook. To me you should have the one on the till just processing it on till when customers are ordering? Then the other one should grab and wrap in paper and bag it up ? I love the takeaway and never written a bad review before but it needs to improve you had 3 groups walk out, or another alternative but due to labour prob not possible get one more person on shift to make the service quicker

We visit this chip shop regularly, as we have found it is the best in town. Food is cooked to order, always cooked well and tastes fantastic.It is a very popular shop and does get very busy at times, so patience is needed.The staff have always been friendly and attentive, not like the previous shop here.Good value for money and good sized portions

Won't return here, the girls weren't even busy when we walked in to the chip shop and they couldn't even utter a "hello". I realise it's not a restaurant but it's just polite, or maybe I'm old fashioned! We asked for large fish & large portion of chips with mushy peas. At other chip shops this is ample for 2 of us to share. Well how wrong were we on this occasion!!!This was stingiest offering we have EVER had from a chip shop. Chips weren't chunky enough either, too many thinly sliced crispy bits. Fish was NOT large, guess they must have ran out & just decided to give us a small one. Tiny pot of mushy peas which were very dry.We do like to support local businesses but we felt ripped off. I think we'll drive a bit further next time to a better chippy we know. It'll be well worth the drive!

The food here is great traditional fish and chips of good quality and price unfortunately the wait can seem like forever but it's all cooked fresh and the food is well worth the wait.The best way to judge a good eatery is the number of local customers waiting to be served and here at most times the queue is out of the door, even some lunchtimes!!

Return visit after 12 months confirmed that this is still a cracking fish & chip shop - excellent fish ( cod & haddock ) and a huge portion of chips - on the occasion that we visited at around mid day on a Saturday all ingredients were cooked fresh to order and were especially tasty even by the time we got them back to my son's home.

It does get very busy on Friday and Saturday evening , but for good quality fish and chips i do not mind the wait or the drive when im in Swindon

The fish and chips have always been cooked well, but I would rather they concentrated on having enough fish and chips cooked, hence avoiding a long wait at times. The shop is called "Fish and Chips on Thames Avenue" not "Every imaginable food stuff fried"The staff are friendly and the shop gleaming.

Earlier this year the original Mandarin Fish Bar closed. Being our local fish and shop shop we wondered where we would have to go to next. Soon it reopened as Fish and Chips on Thames Avenue, so we tried it out. What a difference, the whole place has been redecorated, and has digital pricing boards. The staff are very pleasant. Before, the chips tasted dry. Now they are cooked to order, as is everything. The fish is really good, and tasty. We have yet to try the fish in PANKO breadcrumbs, but have been told that it is well worth a try. Give this place a try, it's well worth it. Opening hours are now extended from when first opened. Prices are good, for the food given.Just one tip, have a good appetite if you order the large fish.

I've been going to this chip shop for 4 years. In the past service was very hit and miss as was the food. On me than on occasion I had to complain. To be honest it was the kind of place you'd only go because it was within walking distance. Now it's been taken over by new owners it's totally different. The food is always good, staff are helpful and friendly and talk to all customers not just those that had been going for 20+ years. And even the shop has been improved. It's now called The Fish and Chip Shop On Thames Avenue and they've done the inside up too.This evening I had veg burger and chips, my family had a chicken burger and chips and a fish cake and chips. The chips were cooked perfectly and the apology for them being new potatoes wasn't needed. Everything was perfect. If you've been there and had bad service or food in the past I urge you to go back. You wont be disappointed!

Had a portion of chips from here recently via a friend, that weren't too bad.However, I have been there previously & their service was as disgusting as their food. I stood waiting to be served for at least 5 minutes and got completely ignored by 3 women behind the counter there, yet they served 2 people that came in after me.For that reason, I won't ever actually use them myself

I have been to the Mandarin Fish Bar many times. The Chinese food is delicious and the fried goods are also scrummy! The chips are delicious and I love the extra chunks of batter that end up in the portion too (gross I know, but trust me so so tasty) my only complaint would be the young staff there...I ordered my meal in advance and was told it would be ready by 19:00 when I arrived it was extremely busy so I joined the line and waited my turn. When It was finally my turn the girls behind the counter were just chatting amongst themselves and didn't seem that interested in me or the other customers. In spite of tonight's poor service by younger team members the food was delicious as always.
