Mamas Italian Kitchen in Sunderland

Having often driven past this restaurant we decided to give it a try. We booked a last minute table (20 minutes in advance) and turned up not knowing what to expect as we had never been before. It is cash only and parking is limited so bear this in mind before you go. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, the staff were really friendly and the food was fantastic! We all enjoyed 3 courses and a couple of drinks (alcoholic) and both were delicious. It worked out around £40 each for our meals and drinks which was excellent value. They even made a cocktail that was not on the menu for one of our group! Excellent food and service, we will definitely be back!

Out for a family meal starter was lovely everyone's mains came out thought oo they look lovely could t wait for mine. Mine came out supposed to be penne carbonara but it was more like carbonara sauce I literally needed a spoon to eat it. Iv even googled to see if it's meant to be like that and it's not. I don't like complaining as I didn't want to spoil the night but it was disappointing when everything else looked nice. The carbonara tasted nice but was too watery ruining it. It was very busy people just sort of standing about everywhere the place is long but narrow and it just doesn't work. I was also annoyed about no card payments such a mess on to pay for a drink as I didnt know this was the case. I have been here everytime it's changed hands and iv never been impressed. Il stick with Amalfi or the godfather next time

My 13 year old daughter went with a few of her friends for a meal yesterday.When finished their meal they all put their money in to pay. They were due £15 change but the staff put the £15 in the tip jar thinking they could get away with it as they are children. When the girls asked about the change they gave them £9 and told them the rest was staying in the tip jar. Absolutely disgusting way to treat paying customers

First time at this restaurant, and I must say from the moment we walked in to leaving we were looked after , the staff are friendly approachable and very proffesional. The food was amazing , generous portion sizes and very tasty , will definitely be going back . Thanks guys!!!

We’ve always gone to mamas and never had a bad meal, food is delicious and good value for money, staff are friendly and they all go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Our son loves it there and they always make a big fuss of him.

Was amazing as always we go all the time my little boy loves the deserts and they make us so welcome . So much choice on the menu I always have a hard time picking as everything is delicious !

Had a table booked at 6pm on a Saturday for me and 4 friends. We arrived 10 mins early and sat in the bar with drinks we had ordered from the bar. The waitress came over and took us to our table and walked off. We sat down looked at the menu and talked for 45 minutes. Our drinks were empty and we hadn’t been asked for a refill or if we wanted to order any food at this point. I got up and asked the waitress if we could order as we had been waiting a while. The waitress said yes and then walked off in the opposite direction. Then a manager came over and said “she is taking another tables order, we have to do it like that so it’s in order for the kitchen” - no apology for the now hour wait and it would have actually taken less time for her to just take our order rather than talk down to us. A different waitress came over and took our order (all mains, no starters or sides). Again, no apology for the wait just “are you ready now?” We made our order and then waited another hour for a pizza and 4 lots of pasta. When it came, the manager put down a plate and said “pass that along”, no apology for the wait and I was there to enjoy a meal not to be barked orders at. One pasta was bland and cold and another was supposed to come with chicken breast and only came with one small piece. I then had to ask if we could order drinks as we still hadn’t been offered. After waiting 2 hours and being served bland and cold food, we were fed up. The waitress cleaned our table and we asked for the bill. We were never asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu or if we needed anything else. The waitress asked how the meal was and I explained that we weren’t satisfied. She said “right okay” and walked off. We then sat and waited another 15 minutes for someone to come over and finish clearing the table and for a manager to come over. The manager came with an attitude and said “you wanted to speak to me?” I tried to explain to her and her staff were rude to us all night, we had to ask to order three times and our wait was ridiculous. However, I never got to finish my sentence as she walked off halfway through it and shouted “right I’ll get your bill” I got up and followed her, where I found her loudly talking about my table to another waitress. I managed to finish my sentence this time and still she said she would get the bill. After another 15 minute wait, we did get the bill and was barked at if we would be “paying cash or bank transfer” the bill was slammed in front of us we we left without a thanks for your business and we are sorry for your whole awful experience. Overall, a dreadful experience and I wouldn’t go back if I was paid to. All staff need training on customer service and they were all bothered about getting in new customers rather than serving the ones that had already been waiting for 2 hours. The manager is ruining the reputation of the business. I had been visiting Mamas for years as it is local to me but that experience has put me off now.

Vegan option was deceiving and disappointing, ordered what was labelled as a vegan burger, turned out to be fried vegetables - mushrooms, peppers and onions in a section of ciabatta bread. They had already told me they had none of their vegan cheese. It was like going back in time, I left feeling hungry and robbed at the £12. Did mention it to member of staff who was polite, but just professed they didn’t get many vegans so it was a token effort.

Quick stop off at Mama's with a friend for a catch up. Opted to sit in the lounge area for our food for more of a relaxed feel. The interior at Mama's is lovely with one main dining room and one smaller one as well as the lounge area, all have lovely décor. We had two lovely servers, who checked to make sure everything was okay and service was also quick. The Chicken Satay Lollipops were tasty and the peanut sauce complimented them nicely however the portion was a little small. The Pizza was also nice but the base could have been a bit crispier. Great value, 2 courses for £14 during happy hour. Cash only but there is a chargeable (£1.99) cash point outside to withdraw from. Will definitely visit again.

Came here on a lunchtime for the festive menu, 2 courses for £16. Got potato skins to start then the festive sandwich. Food portions were a good size and could tell food was fresh

We have been to Mamas on numerous occasions and we have enjoyed it every time. I thought I would leave my first review as tonight’s meal was the best of them all. Gorgeous food, lovely wine, service with smile, sweets for the kids. Thanks for the EXTRA spice in my pasta dish!! A perfect evening. Thank you Mamas, so lucky to have such an amazing restaurant within walking distance!!!

Well what can I say? Nothing was too much trouble for the lovely staff, the food was amazing and as an Italian myself, I can truly say this is the most authentic Italians in the north east ( I've tried quite a few)... There was 26 of us and not one single complaint about anything at all, that says it all. We had the set lunch menu which has a choice of 5 starters and tons of mains. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.

We were a group of friends staying in the area for a few days. We liked Mamas so much we ate here both nights. The risotto gambas was particularly delicious. One of our party had several food intolerance and her main course was tailored to her needs.

Usually a great spot for Sunday lunch. Got my weekly takeaway lunch to return home 20 minute drive to zero beef in either of them. Was informed if I came back they would up two new dinners with beef in them to drive back to be given a portion of beef in two containers. Another 20 minutes drive home and cold dinners been left to then go with beef. Really let down by service and the solution I was given will be to go elsewhere now in future.

Another meal with the hubby last night, we have been regulars for years now and are never disappointed, a lovely meal and great service. See you again soon.

Table for 7 arrived when restaurant was very busy but that didn’t stop the staff been very attentive. We had drinks within 5 minutes of being there. Food was outstanding starters mains and desserts compliments to the chefs overall such a lovely experience on what I can imagine to be one of the busier days of the year

Family of 22 came here for a birthday we were seated promptly drinks order taken and recieved quickly, staff very attentive food was amazing staff kept checking we were okay for more drinks etc.. played happy birthday to the birthday girl and fetched cake out absolutely brilliant and would highly recommend

This place needs pulling down! Went with the family two teenagers, one child two adults. Seated promptly and the menus look decent, but then the food arrives (should of taken more photos but didn't want to appear like a chav with a camera).. potato's skins with more grease than WD40 Chips over cooked and the same. Garlic bread tasteless and overcooked and Brushetta that was cold and no flavour! No table check performed throughout! Main course, even worse... Some kind of hot spicy pasta dish for my 14 year old which was spiced up right, problem is it was tasteless throughout so the heat masked the lack of flavour. Burgers atrocious and put together sloppy with soggy bread buns... Burgers themselves would be better out if a tin! I mean really poor! Asked for vinegar and as pictured this filthy contraption was offered with what looked like a strange mixed hazy solution inside... The waitress said it was malt vinegar but I've seen nowhere that resembles Sarsons Malt Vinegar in colour or flavour! All of the food was lacking in flavour.. We sent the vegetables back as they were cold and crucified.. The defensive staff said we can change but it will be the same that comes back as it's a honeyglaze... Wow... Gordon Ramsay would have a field day in here! Defensive staff no table check and an 80 pound bill which would have certainly fed the homeless on premium burgers from the local butcher, fresh salad, hot food, and flavours included learned at grade 1 of your grandmother's kitchen any day of the week! I mean this is basic but then when we left it's no supprise as the chefs outside in the carpark in between courses on his phone scrolling socials whilst smoking a fag! What a look! Never mind, I'm going to offer them a masterclass in how to cook the food with flavour and connect with customers... If they agree ill cook the whole service for them on a Friday night and they can refund our 80 pound bill please... In a world where people cannot afford to heat their homes a hostile experience with bland low level miserable food like this is for the dark ages and for the people who eat this food and don't complain get out of the area and start living cos this deffo ain't it!!

went for Sundays dinner, absolutely shameful, vegetables to go with Sundays dinner was served in a separate plate covered in a mayonnaise/creamy sauce that tasted horrible, requested some new vegetables due to not being able to eat it, had lamb as choice of meat for Sundays roast, was just a slice of fat- I understand lamb is a fatty food, however not any meat. Would not recommend to anyone, and certainly would not bring home to give to the dogs. partner, actually vomited at the restaurant because of the state of the dinner. table service/waitress’s didn’t give good service, didn’t communicate with customers to see how everything was, had to go looking for someone. when payment was taken at the end, waitress argued that it’s the way the lamb comes in, just a roll and they cook and serve, however you pay extra for lamb, so some meat would of went a long way, Never would return P.s, £38 for two dinner’s, x2 FLAT pepsi however compliments for the roast potatoes, clearly the chef’s specialty is only been able to cook potatoes, as a only ate x2 of those!

Visited for my wife's birthday with son, daughter in law and granddaughters. We had booked a booth and it was ready when we arrived. The service was good and the menu had a good variety of dishes. We shared anti-pasta and potato skins both of which were very tasty. Variety of main dishes all presented well and well cooked. All the mains finished and enjoyed. Would recommend to all.

Arrived at around 5.45pm and there was only one other table in. Waited 45 minutes for the mains and my boyfriend had ordered a 'double chicken breast burger with stuffing, bacon and cranberry, served with pigs in blankets, gravy and dirty fries' When it arrived it was just chicken breast in a bun with pigs in blankets, a small jug of a gravy and dirty fries. We asked where the bacon, stuffing and cranberries were and the waitress said the cranberry was mixed in the gravy and the stuffing and bacon were in the pigs in blankets (?) We questioned this and then brought a pot of cranberry and a bit of stuffing (still no bacon..or apology). We were then overcharged on the bill. Came away really disappointed and won't be coming back

We went here for lunch with our 3 and 8 year old. They had the kids meals for £2.50 which was amazing and we had the 3 course special. The food was great as it always is. There is a small car park on site which is on a hill but accessible. Inside it is all on the flat with plenty of room.

Visited Mama's for an early tea after work. Garlic bread starter was enjoyable however the main course was very poor and I did not eat it. I explained to wait staff why I had not eaten the pasta dish when they cleared the table to be told they would inform the chef. When the waitress returned, she threw my boyfriend's boxed left over pizza onto the table whilst she was speaking to customers at another table. There was no apology offered and item was not removed from the bill. There was also no offer of desserts or coffee. I was very disappointed with both the food and service and will not be returning.

4 of us went in on a Monday evening. It was fairly busy but we were made welcome and the food was serve quickly and it was very tasty and the portions were generous. this is a place you can go into safe in the knowledge that the food will be tasty.

We visited during the day as there are some brilliant deals on the menu! My toddler is fussy and the waitress was so nice to her and was trying to encourage her to eat, the desserts were absolutely gorgeous, this is the second time I’ve been and both times it’s been fantastic and great value for money

Someone has got a grip of this business in last year . Visited this restaurant previously but on recent months it has much changed for the better . Maybe it’s the refurbishment and changed decor but at same time the food, service and food presentation has vastly improved .

I booked a table for me and my boyfriend on Valentines evening, we arrived a little early which was fine as we were seated and served drinks straight away. Felt it was going to be a relaxing evening and I had chosen the correct restaurant... how wrong I could have been?? One of us chose the 3 course special for £10 that they had on and one was choosing from the menu.

If you are coeliac or need gluten free food do not go here, the staff do not understand cross contamination! We pre booked and pre ordered for a party of 13 for an 18th birthday celebration. In the order we specifically stipulated that 1 of the party was coeliac and detailed the gluten free meal, including a steak with no onion rings. We waited quite some time between our starters and main course, but that’s understandable as it was a busy Saturday evening. Everyone in our party received their main course apart from my Coeliac husband. Over 5 minutes later he still had no food and no one had apologised. Luckily we were sitting near the kitchen and could see his order (steak) on the pass. The plate had onion rings on it, then it disappeared and returned seconds later with no onion rings. I spoke to the server and she said that the chef had put onion rings on his order but not to worry they had been removed and the food put on a different plate! I explained to her that was not good enough and due to cross contamination the food must be recooked. The server was not happy with this but after a bit of a heated discussion she told me she would have to ‘check with the chef’. We did get a freshly cooked meal but only because we saw the meal coming out of the kitchen and argued the point. By the time it arrived the rest of our party had finished their food. If we had not seen the food with the onion rings on then the coeliac member of our party would have suffered the consequences and been dreadfully ill for days. We only received an apology when we pointed out we hadn’t received one and the staff didn’t seem to care. We have since contacted them by email to complain and received excuses and total lack of responsibility. Will certainly not be going here ever again.

Restaurant recommended by friends. Good atmosphere when we walked in. Service was good. Food a different matter. Starters were very good with excellent flavour but mains not so good with issues on gluten free pasta that became a pizza by mistake. Pizza base not very Italian more normal bread. Toppings ok but tomato base tasting more like a certain brand of tomato sauce

The venue was very clean, fresh and the staff were smart, welcoming and helpful, polite and friendly throughout. We were served by a young Greek lady whose name I can’t remember but did an excellent job. The service was fast and the food hot, tasty and plentiful. We didn’t eat dessert but they looked lush! We were pleasantly surprised when the bill arrived. Great value.

We’ve been a few times and the food is always really nice . My favourite is the sorrento fillet steak. The kids meals are only £3 and the pizza they get is a decent size. Will definitely be coming back regularly.

I booked a table for ten people for Sunday lunch and we were very disappointed. The service was poor ( they just don't have enough staff ) The beef had sold out but we advised by the waiter that they had a sirloin beef on , we ordered this only to be presented with a Sunday lunch with a piece of fatty steak on the top ! When I complained the waitress spoke to the chef and then advised he had said this was the best cut of Sirloin ! if this is what the chef thinks is a good cut of meat then he needs further training . We will not be returning for Sunday lunch , it was a waste of money and they didnt really want to know when I raised the concern !

A group of us had a lovely time at Mama's. We ordered starters consisting of ribs, garlic bread and prawns. The ribs were disappointing. However the main courses were great, healthy portion sizes for the pasta which was cooked perfectly. A great selection of deserts too.

Mamas italian kitchen provides good food with a good service. Not expensive at all. Menu is as expected for an Italian restaurant, pasta, pizza etc with burgers for good measure. The food is served hot with generous portions.

We visit this restaurant as much as we can - as we are not local to it. But love it. Recently we popped in for lunch and I ordered the Calzone. This has prompted this review which is my first EVER review. It was that good I just had to take the time to do this. My husband and son both had good meals that were so reasonable and the staff were great. I love Italian food and this was better than the usual chain restaurants, Zizzis, Prezzo, Pizza Express etc. I have even lived and worked in Italy so I know a good Calzone - it was truly delicious. Trouble is I won't want to order anything different when we visit again very soon!

We are from down south and came here on my cousins recommendation- it did not disappoint- I had the penne mama and banoffee pie- it was delicious! Will definitely be returning when we next visit family!

Always consistent high standard of food. The menu is varied and everything is fresh. The staff cannot do enough to make your visit enjoyable , nothing is too much trouble. New opening hours and happy hours deals are excellent !!!!

Bought two chicken wraps from the takeaway in gurteens yard and found green mould on the wrap.immediately took it back and was reimbursed and a new wrap.said some wraps were left out and had gone off.what a disappointment.

Heard lots about this place so thought I world try it for myself. Seated immediaetly, orded drinks which were served promptly. Orded food, mains only, Pork Chicken and Lamb. Plates came with potato, meat and a huge Yorkshire and then the veg on a seperate plate Cauli, broccili, carrots, roasties, turnip and mushie peas [mmmmm] Only reason I am not giving a 5 it was not hot enuogh for me but that is my personal prefernce, others with me really enjoyed it so will deffinetly return.

For mains I have the chicken stuffed with cheese and asparagus wrapped in bacon with a mushroom sauce ( so nice ) and my parter had parmo , said he had had better and lacked flavour. Chips were really soggy and we didn't eat them , veg was nice. So overall a mixed review as I enjoyed mine but it could have been better.

Ordered a large order to work, tried to make amendments to one of the chicken kebabs to change the chips to extra salad which was impossible, it arrived just missing the chips with no extra salad which I requested and they charged me the same cost. In both the kebabs the chicken was rubbery and chewy and the shop bought white tortilla wraps AKA a 'flat bread'?? had spores of green mould specked around them.

We came here last week on a busy saturday night for a suprise birthday meal for my mam 60 birthday . I cannot fault this place at all, we have been many times over a number of years as its local to us & never had a bad meal or bad service.

Lovely Sunday lunch, highly recommend the feather blade beef. Desserts were lovely also but service was a bit grumpy otherwise would have been 5!

Visited on a saturday at 4pm and the place was empty. Seated promptly but we werent given any menus. 10 minutes later and another table were seated and given menus. We managed to flag down the waiter and ask for menus, but received no apology!? We were a party of 4 adults and 2 kids and ordered a mix of pizzas and pastas. All came rather quickly but everything was lacking flavour! It is very cheap but everything very bland! Happier with a chippy or a frozen pizza.

Booked an evening for my daughters football team - 33 people in total - from beginning to end the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and the food as usual was top class. When there was an issue with one of the starters it was swapped straight away - no questions!!

Unfortunately I wouldn't return due to the rude member of staff who rolled her eyes at me when I asked to look at the dessert menu. Having not visited before I'm unaware they have to carry the desserts to the table. Isn't that her job to serve people? She also told us off for being late. I was stuck in heavy traffic for over an hour to get there! Place was scruffy. They overcharged me too until I pointed it out. Still only half a coke instead of a pint of coke in the offer. So I was still ripped off! Thankfully other members of staff were politer. But because of the rudeness of this one member of staff and being overcharged it would our me off visiting here. Don't dare ask to look at the dessert menu!!! She may throw them in your face!!!

Love this place! Mamas pasta is gorgeous!! The staff are lovely. The deserts are beautiful the lady brought them over on a slab & really spoilt for choice! All home made & gorgeous!

Amazing food and staff are always so friendly. The desserts are absolutely lovely but can't just have one. Definitely worth a visit. Decor is really stylish and the booths are a brilliant idea

We live near by this restaurant, the other night we ordered a takeaway from them and my husband is really poorly with food poisoning from it. This was confirmed by his GP.

Visited with family and took advantage of the special menu which had plenty of choice. Great service, friendly staff, hot and tasty food. Recommended

My family have always been a big fan of this place but after our latest visit on Sunday we will never ever eat here again.
