A brilliant place to spend if you want either a quiet drink in traditional maritime bar surroundings, or outside on The Shoreside in the sun. A major attraction for many locals on a hot day and very good prices at the bar.

Live jazz. Lively pub atmosphere. Lovely beer. Loved it.

Everything you want in a local pub, lovely staff and excellent vibe, the perfect spot for a drink with friends. I went on a Momday and was quite busy so I imagine it might be hard to get a seat on weekends though

Incredible pub. Will be the last beacon for the real ale drinkers in Edinburgh, once everyone else drops it, eventually. It's a pub, so no food. Recently dropped the lighting in the evenings, which mixed with fantastic people behind the bar and some exceptional chats you can have here have created an outstanding atmosphere.

I didn't have the opportunity to eat there. In fact, we drank too much because it's a friendly and lively place. There was a rugby match going on so the bar was very lively. The guys serving are pretty relaxed. Don't worry if you come across a few drunk people there! It's great, not too touristy, but definitely worth it!

Really nice cosy pub, great beer selection, and a warm fire making this a great retreat in cold winter months, or you can sit outside in summer. Definitely worth a visit.

Lovely, cosy pub with a broad selection of real ales, local keg and mainline beers as well as a good selection of Scotch whiskies. There is a roaring coal fire (a rarity in Edinburgh), low / warm lighting and rows of dried hops decorating the wooden ceiling beams. The traditional windows and wooden cladding add to the ambience with a casual, relaxed feel. Located on the picturesque ‘Shore’ of the Water of Leith, it is well-served by a number of bus routes. There are 8 real ale pumps offering different styles from Scottish and northern English breweries. On keg, there are local options from Newbarns and Campervan. Staff are really nice.

Great wee pub with a bit of character. Would recommend popping in for one or two.

Went here for a few drinks before a homebrew competition. First me Frankie, who was super friendly and chatty, made you feel very welcome. I then weirdly sitting at the bar a lovely young lady from leith and a Liverpudlian, Everyon fan called Phil, and for two hours we mattered as if we knew each other for years. Just amazing little pub. Ps unfortunately no winners with my beers, but it’s the taking part that counts. I will return one day, and you never, I might meet the two at the bar again. Get to this place, for great atmosphere and amazing service.

In short: Really greasy, rustic pub - large selection of beers and other alcoholic beverages, totally friendly, helpful service. A great mix of guests, young and old, jeans and jackets, great atmosphere. Very fun and not a tourist trap.

Hermoso bar ocupado junto al agua que sirve precioso Guinness. Salió a tomar unas copas antes de salir a comer y se sentó afuera mirando por encima del agua. Bonito lugar.

Very nice Pub on the Water of Leith! Atmospheric interior with nice decoration! It has a few tables outside with a view of the river, while you can also sit on the bank with your drink! Friendly staff. Good prices - not touristic! Perfect for enjoying a sunny day in Leith!

Live music, good beer, what's not to like?

Pleasant terrace, on the banks of the Leith, which can be very windy. There are plenty of choices of beers at reasonable prices. The atmosphere is very friendly, frequented by locals. I had a great time there although when I left I was a little drunk.

Fun cozy atmosphere with outdoor seating as well! Nice local beer on tap, there’s two to choose from, I liked the Pils. Friendly service and nice views of the canals from the outdoor seating area.

Visited here with friends during the Jazz and Blues Festival. Great night soaking up the atmosphere and catching the tunes. Pub was busy, busy and staff were so friendly and helpful despite the pressures. Clearly a popular venue in the neighbourhood with great views o er the Water of Leith especially on a warm, sunny evening.

My god does this place need a deep clean. The carpet is disgusting the tables are incredibly sticky and a coat of paint wouldn't go a miss.

Can't be a better place in Sunny Leith for a decent pint of cask ale. Have to say though that prices are on the up compared to similar pubs in the immediate area.

Poor welcome. Told we couldn't sit at the bar as it was reserved.... What pub pub reserves the bar area? Then to be told another free area of the bar was order only so wasn't allowed to sit there either. That aside, the lassie behind the bar was rude! Our pints tasted like the smell of wet dog. If the lassie wasn't so rude we would have said so we just left.

Traditional friendly proper pub, excellent choice of beer, larger and ales the choice charges frequently. The whisky selection is also tremendous. The service was professional and friendly I would highly recommend anyone to visit here.

Nice staff nice feel to the place

Both times I've been in here I have felt like I've been judged for being a woman. But as soon as I order a pint of beer it goes away, it's as if being a woman in here is less than but ordering beer makes up for it? The pints are quite expensive for what it is but the pub itself is cosy. The staff are very focused on catering for men, and don't really care about their female customers. Not sure if I'll come back. Don't know if they serve food.

Very bad experience. The waiter who told us he was the manager was very rude to us. I don't know if he was having a bad day, his ego or what he was thinking but you can't treat people like that. I tried to talk to him because I didn't understand how a person could behave like that at work and he told me that if I didn't understand him it was my problem (saying that my English was bad). He seemed like a customer who was upset because another customer was ignoring him… a very unpleasant and uncomfortable situation. We will not return and I do not recommend it.

First visit, great local, packed full bit did not feel chaotic, nice atmosphere. Good range of beer, and I'm sure other tipples too. Live music is sometimes played.

The Malt and Hops is a traditional cozy, friendly pub on the shore at Leith. Inside is unusual with bunches of hops and old mugs/whisky jugs hanging from the ceiling. The walls are adorned with old mirrored beer adverts and other interesting pub/drink memorabilia. There's also a real fire which was great to stand near to on a cold day in December.  If you visit in the summer there are tables outside with views of the Water of Leith. Great selection of beers and whiskies. Service was excellent and friendly with the lone barman coping well when about 20 of us arrived. 👍😀 Definitely recommended.

They charged me 7.20 for my Moonwake IPA which feels like it’s more than it should be. Maybe it’s because I’m not a local? I guess I’ll never find out.

Absolutely brilliant evening here having strolled to the sheep heid, through the park to the willow then we walked down past and into old haunts before landing here. What a great place full of locals who gave us a second glance and a seat. Thanks for being so welcoming and hope to join the party again soon. Brilliant value too

We called in for a drink as recommended by a local bistro owner. The atmosphere is pumping what a great place to call in for a drink whilst walking round Leith!

I've never had a rubbish time here, always a good vibe, nice beers and the best playlist! Also, sometimes you get to sit next to a dog!

Popped in for a pint and a dram, the beer selection was good if a little pricey. Plenty of whiskies but all were quite standard and low end, with no independent bottlers or anything special to peak the interest of a whisky fan.

Found this place a few months ago and happy now to call it my local. The staff and customers are very pleasant and the atmosphere is great, a nice place to chill and relax. Good selection of beer and IPAs too. I love coming here a few times a week, well.... why not right? 😁
