Why play such loud music, it's a pleasant enough pub but dear me, the landlord seems to want the world to hear what's playing...wither that or just doesn't want to hear/speak to anyone because he obviously can't engage with them

Definitely not worth the money, dated rooms, not that clean in the rooms or stairs etc, dog hairs and dust, not the friendliest of welcomes but she was covering the bar, staff for breakfast not that friendly either, but staff on reception in the morning very friendly (definitely makes a difference), parking is limited and timed as it is public streets, last comment showers drain very slowly.

For a one night stay over, The Angel was the place I chose. The hotel itself is in the town centre, the only downside being no private car park, but was advised where there was free parking by staff, a 2 min walk away. To drop off bag & check in initially, there is a public car park with a free hour parking a similar walk away. Recommended. 🙂

Entrance is into the traditional bar which was a little off-putting since it was mainly men drinking beer, however the hotel reception is through a locked door and the noise wasn't an issue later. Twin room with en-suite very clean, beds very comfortable. Could do with a blackout blind as very bright overlooking the front. Excellent full English breakfast. Good value for the money.

Popped in for a drink whilst visiting the area. Lovely friendly people. Pub area can get very busy. Food served upto 1.45pm and the restaurant opened again at 6pm. The restaurant area is away from the drinking area. Food was Brilliant! It was our favourite place we eat at. The waitress, (she had butterflies tattoo) was very polite, helpful and friendly not just with us, but with all the customers she served. When we return to Coleford, we will definitely have another meal at this place. Update 2024: returned to the angel hotel for drinks/meals. Once again fantastic, friendly service from the butterflies tattoo lady (she even remembered us visiting in 2023 and where we sat)! The food...well, we'll be returning 😁! What does that tell you?

The owner shouldn’t run the place ! He’s pissed up behind the bar swearing around children. We stayed in room 106 the room was boggin ! Carpet full of stains and covered with old scatty rugs. The shower either had hot or cold water. Now we went to the bar that the owner was working behind as no staff at the reception and told him that the water was either boiling or freezing he replied with (did you turn it on ) clearly I have and he then said well there is nothing I can do then …… you what mate ! I would even bother to be honest s**t show really

Firstly, the roast dinners were perfectly pleasant. What wasn’t pleasant was 2 of our party getting their dinners a good ten minutes before the rest of the table, then hearing the cook screaming at the waiting staff whilst we all sat in the dining room listening. No apology for the staggered service times. When I pointed out we were still waiting for one more dinner the cook shouted at me across the room. Then despite no one else being around we were ushered out of the dining room so they could tidy up ready for tomorrow (tomorrow is a Monday so to struggle to see how busy they expect to be, or why they didn’t want to continue getting drink money from a table of 16…). We weren’t asked if we wanted desserts and when we enquired about having some, (admittedly it was just gone 3pm) we were told we couldn’t have them. Won’t be returning. Had we been a smaller group we would have voted with our feet earlier in proceedings but felt that we were unlikely to find anywhere else locally that could do such a large group on Father’s Day

As visitors to the area we weren’t sure where to eat. We visited the Angel for lunch and were pleasantly surprised. There was 6 of us and a toddler. They were very helpful and although no set kids menu, the basket meals were great portions and they even let us add veg to them. The staff were very patient even with our toddler crying and moaning because she didn’t want to sit down. Service was quick and drinks kept flowing. Recommended for lunch definitely

On a very wet day we decided to go have a nice traditional Sunday roast. With a few choices in Coleford, we choose the angel as it looked cosy, clean and homey. The waitress was very sweet but I feel she was not given the training to provide better customer service. Again not her doing I might add. We ordered quickly and our drinks arrived, when I said I didn’t order a pint of soft drink and a coffee, there was no acknowledgement, apology or correction on the bill might I add. Okay, so the food arrived not too long a wait and huge portions. When asked did we want any condiments, like you do lamb mint sauce and apple sauce for pork. No apple sauce sorry, which was a shock being Tesco and cool are both right by. Started the meal and I had to ask my partner for his side plate in order to load it full with the fat from the pork, disappointing. Whilst eating the meal another family cane in and at 1.15, were told sorry no more orders which was a shock there were only four tables of people, so assumed something had happened but that’s not the issue. Whilst eating we then heard very loud and very clear the chef shout out from the kitchen, at what we can only assume was a dissatisfied customer, well if you don’t f****** like go elsewhere. The whole restaurant stopped and looked at each other in astonishment. The family with 3 very young children decided not to continue waiting for their food and when told this to the waitress no apology was offered, no support to her either. She still had to charge the customers for their drinks ... the plates were not cleared if they had then they could see I did not finish my meal and a huge plate of fat on the side. Instead we left with no apology to the customers, or gesture. I gave a poor bit awful because my partner finished his meal it was okay. Never have I heard this before in a family restaurant, very poor.

Expectations were moderated with the price we had paid but we loved this place (so much more than the rubbish hotel we had paid £130 for the night before). Room was large, modern, and clean. Huge bathroom. Very comfortable night's stay. Breakfast was fantastic; loads of choice and delicious. If you need to stay in Coleford, stay here. Don't be put off by the outside and pub bit downstairs (we didn't eat dinner here).

Me and my gf had a couple of nights in the pub. First night: lovely. Nice beers nicely pulled. The tall dark haired barmaid was v friendly. Nice atmosphere. Comfy sofa. Back a couple of nights later. V warm welcome from the tall dark haired barmaid who seemed very pleased to have us back. However, for the first hour we had bizarre and sexually explicit songs played on the jukebox by a group who initially appeared to be locals but later transpired to be staff when after spending two of our own pounds on a selection songs one produced a key for juke box which cut off the sound from the area we were sitting before switching to Master of the House from the West End Show, Les Miserable. Additionally, upon hearing my London accent while making enquiries to the group about how to use the juke box, I was referred to by one of the group as ‘Dennis Waterman’. Now, I’m as big a fan of Minder as the next man. Indeed, even, On The Up was, in my view, a follow up sitcom for Mr Waterman which is woefully underrated. But, I take great umbrage in having 50 years added to my age while being effectively barred from hearing Robert De Nero’s Waiting by Bananarama. I will not be returning. J 40

We walked into the bar of the Angel Hotel in search of a light lunch. It was quite busy with what seemed to be local residents. We ordered a drink at the bar and went to find a table. To be honest we were almost put off by a ‘delightful’ young female sitting at a table near the bar who talked extremely loudly with every other word uttered beginning with the letter F. Fortunately we decided to stay (sitting as far away as possible) and thoroughly enjoyed our sandwiches. The bread was fresh, the fillings tasty and the salad garnish nicely dressed. The crisps were a little on the stale side. The bar maid was nice and friendly and the service was good.

Mi hotel en Coleford decidió no servir después de 19. 00 en favor de un gran bloque de reservas, quizás una boda o una cena de golf. Yo estaba impresionado. Called in here last week for a lunchtime drink and food. We opted to sit in the bar which was a little dark but had a nice large table for the 4 of us.Ordered drinks and perused the menu; barman pointed out quickly that one of the mains was finished but that turned out not to be an issue.4 meals came out about 15 minutes later and ranged from 3 very goods to one good. Burgers were home made and buns were really fresh and tasty. Only criticism was that a bit more ham with the egg and chips was expected. Shame because it was nice. We'd go back.

We were on a cycling trip round the Forest of Dean and this particular route included the town of Coleford. After a 5 klm uphill gradient from Park End we called at The Angel for a well deserved pint. The barman was not welcoming at all. Surly and disinterested was the politest description I can give. My partner ordered a pint of Hob Goblin which proved to be very substandard. Indeed they clearly don't sell much and it had gone off. Due to the unfriendly Ness of the barman my partner, an expert on beer having worked in the industry for many years, decided not to say anything. This pub has good reviews. It's a shame that this surly person spoiled what could have been a good experience for us. Not keeping 'a good pint' is inexcusable!

We came here on a recommendation and were so disappointed that we left without ordering!Although not particularly busy, there were too few staff to cope with customers and we sat for ten minutes before being given menus. The barman seemed overwrought and wasn't able to show us to a table in the restaurant, which we had to find for ourselves. When the waitress did arrive we ordered drinks and we were told that there were no burgers. After a further ten minutes we went in search of our own drinks but to no avail: the waitress seemed to have forgotten us and was pouring drinks for bar customers instead, so we left and found somewhere else to eat.Such a pity - I had heard lovely things about this pub but was very disappointed when we visited.

Went for a meal on a Saturday night in January. Immaculate outside and in, but no effort at all with food. I had a chicken burger. The piece of chicken hardly filled half the bun, and the bun was so hard it was like toast. It was also filled with a "nan's salad", presumably to fill the empty space. My husband had a curry and was happy with it. All " boil in the bag". Such a lovely looking place, it would be nice if they made some tiny bit of effort with their food. The service was fine. We were the only two in the eating area which is separate from the bar. It was ordinary pub food prices. My advice, raise your prices just a bit and get a real cook! Finally, I asked the waitress for extra dry Martini, and she didn't know what it was. Train your bar staff. This is not an unusual drink.

We struggled to find a restaurant for lunch in Coleford and came across the Angel. The restaurant was busy (see later). We had to rearrange the tables to cope with our party of 4 + 2 under 3's without any welcome or assistance from staff. We found some menus and a waitress took our order a few minutes later, drinks soon arrived and we sat back awaiting our meal. After 30 minutes a member of staff informed us (without apology) that they had no beef and ale pie, we reordered and waited another 15 minutes for meals to arrive. At last, some were OK, but my wife had to sort through the salad leaves to remove the decaying ones and there was a a globule of something which I can best describe as slimmy gelatinous fat in the childs spaghetti carbanara. We asked about baby changing facilities but were told none was available, we were allowed to change the baby on the restaurant floor! We also noted a couple walking out because of delay and concluded the restaurant was busy because of the delayed service, not because of demand. I paid and was offered no receipt. My review gives one star because the chips were fresh and quite good, but that's all.

We spent a family holiday in Gloucestershire over the half term break and had booked another local restaurant for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately we’d been let down as our booking hadn’t been taken properly however they did us a big favour as we then phoned The Red Hart who were able to accommodate 9 of us for Sunday lunch at very short notice, our ages ranging from 17 to 87! We knew the pub previously having spent several family holidays at Blaisdon Hall as kids. The staff at The Red Hart were really welcoming, it’s a great little country pub and the food was amazing. We returned for dinner a few evenings later. I would highly recommend it!

Stayed in Alvington while seeing Tom Jones in Chepstow. Lovely little pub. Classic proper pub. Vintage decor, nice and cosy. Pool table and darts board. Staff were really nice. The little restaurant is on the other side of the building so it doesn’t feel like a gastro pub. Had food there as well a couple of times. Jackson the waiter was nice and polite. Only a young lad. Hope it doesn’t change. Need more classic pubs like this. Really nice place.
