Staff where amazing so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the menu. Food was amazing and cocktails went down a treat. Only criticims are billboards advertising the food and drink offers outside are misleading. My colleagues and I went on a Thursday night which is 50%off steak (Great deal) but when we got in you only got the 50% off if you had 2 courses. Also as connected to the bar that had happy hour advertised until 7pm, this offer couldn't be used in the restaurant which seems silly as that same bar was provided us our drink.

Service was amazing and waiters were very accommodating to our preference. The hake and trout were delicious !! Don’t recommend the aubergine or prawn linguine unfortunately but other mains and desserts were very good!

Staff very accommodating requests are always met standard exceptional. Manager Sorin warm, welcoming makes you feel special service excellent !!!

Tom my wife for afternoon tea here, it was lovely. Staff were very accommodating, friendly and helpful. The food was better than what was expected, with a good range and great taste. The surroundings were comfortable, cosy and welcoming.

Sophia served us after a long drive, her service was exceptional, catered to our every need and made sure we were well fed and watered. Lovely and approachable, kind and friendly, this woman went above and beyond and made our sitting feel VIP , thankyou Sophia

I came for a private meeting event and upon arrival I was greeted by a lovely staff member who asked for my coat and asked if I wanted to keep my bag somewhere. The food was great and we had water, with a mixture of bottles of wine which was a nice touch. Everyone was really lovely and helpful on the day. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience 🫶🏾

Have had food poisoning couple of hours after eating here yesterday. Had scollops for starter and sea-bass for main course. The restaurant was cold and we had to ask for the heating to be turned up.

Their afternoon tea is not nut allergy friends. Checked the allergen menu beforehand and there was no mention of may contain nuts just to find out on the day off, that every dish contains nuts? Why is your allergen menu incorrect?

It's one my favourite places to come chill and get a drink and a dessert(sticky toffee pudding highly recommended). There always nice chill out music playing and the ambience of the place is very relaxing and laid-back.

Visited Malmaison on 16th January 2025 with a friend to have the Classic Mal Afternoon Tea advertised via Wowcher. Presentation of the food was on point however, the food was not the best. All hot dishes came out cold - as if it food had been sat there waiting. We had to ask to have fresh hot chocolate as it came out lukewarm. Pot of tea was the same! The best thing about the experience was the hospitality of one the waiters - I think he may be from Indonesia. His personality is infectious! He was great and made us feel so welcome! I would not return or recommend. Better hotels around the city offering Afternoon Tea.

When you’re away on business, it’s usually a compromise to dine in the hotel. Sometimes even in reasonably smart hotels, you’re confronted with a steak and ale pie, or fish and chips. They used to say in cities you’re never more than 5 metres from a rat. Now you’re never more than 5 metres from a Thai green curry. So imagine my surprise… nay… delight this evening, when Malmaison Birmingham’s brasserie knocked it out of the park. There was something in the room about half price steaks on a Thursday. I asked myself if I could put myself through it. After all, you never know if you’re going to get one of those zeebo things instead of a cow or a side serving of CJD. Despite me turning up in a steely mood, bracing myself for a depressing and anodyne meal cooked by an imbecile, I was escorted across the restaurant with great finesse by Bismark. I half assumed he was pointing me to a table for two in the window, but he actually afforded me an entire booth to myself. When does anywhere do that for a lone diner? That’s a good start, I told myself. Then my eyes started scanning the place for filth, and there was none. Nothing. Not even a watermark on the cutlery or the glassware. Service was swift, personal, well rehearsed, and never too professional to simply be nice. So after all that, I expected my medium fillet steak to ruin everything, with some combination of still having a pulse, being cooked like Freddy Kreuger, or being so full of gristle my plate would go back looking like I’d taken out someone’s appendix. It was literally perfect. One of the top 5 fillet steaks I think I’ve had anywhere. Assiduously cooked to my order and smartly presented. The side dish of salad was a bit naff though. The leaves were very fresh, the dressing was better than I imagined, and the presentation did its best, but it was far too large and needed much more diversity – not just a huge bowl of anodyne leaves, of which only the top ones benefited from the dressing. That was only 4 quid so I am over it. Just. Almost ordered the Vahlrona Torte, then noticed it was 1300 calories. Really? How on earth can one portion of anything have 1300 calories this side of Florida? To each his own, and really they’re to be praised for putting the calories on the menu and giving people a choice. They had a cheesecake for 350 calories so there was something for everyone. I went for the Mounjaro-friendly crème brûlée and it turned out to be a good call. It was enormous but not at the expense of quality. Not the best I’ve ever had but not a frozen 3664 / Brake Brothers atrocity either. As the meal progressed, I was served by Raj, Hasti and Warren at various points too. I saw less of them than Bismark of course, but what I saw was thoroughly up to scratch. Not only has this experience improved my perception of Malmaison, it has also left me with a better impression of Birmingham. That is no mean feat with me being a Manc. After all, ask a Brummie what England’s second city is and they’ll say it’s Birmingham. Ask a Manc the same question and we’ll tell you it’s London.

We ate there on a Sunday afternoon and had absolutely fabulous service. Our waiter (I forgot to check his name but know he is Indonesian) was absolutely wonderful, he was so friendly and helpful, he made it a great experience! I’ve really only come on here to make it known how brilliant he was. Our food came in a reasonable time and the burger was absolutely delicious with a really tasty relish. The half chicken was also delicious but could do with coming with a side of potatoes or something as you really have no choice but to order a separate side to go with it. The fries were lovely and a good size portion but the chunky chips, while very good, was a very small portion for the price. The setting itself was very pleasant, felt a little luxurious without being too pretentious. Overall a really good experience.

Top marks all round for our lovely meal at the bar and grill - the steaks and lobster Mac n’ cheese were incredible. Big thanks to Warren - you were lovely and provided 10/10 service.

Great great place food bar staff restaurant all fantastic set of staff I would recommend 100% can't wait to visit again

Firstly I have to say the services and atmosphere of the Melmasion Bar and Grill was superb. We spent Saturday night in Birmingham and stay at the Melmasion hotel, as we knew we going to have a long day so booked a table at the hotel in house restaurant for ease. We ordered food and drink and waited for our starters to arrive. After what seemed like a long wait the started arrived. The starter were ok but nothing special, I had the steak tartar and my partner had the scollops. The Tartar was a little grey and not the normal pink colour and felt like it had been sitting in a fridge for a while. For the main I have the fillet steak with 3 time cooked chip and Cauliflower cheese, the other half had the New York strip steak, fries and again the Cauliflower cheese. There was another fairly long wait before the food was brought to our table. The main course was an utter disappointment, while both steaks had been cooked as requested (blue for the fillet and rare for the New York Stripe) every thing was cold. There was nothing hot, everything was tepid at best. My cauliflower was just cold, it like all of the sides were served in small cast iron pots, which were all cold to the touch. It felt like everything had been precooked, chilled and then warmed up to serve, but nothing had been warmed up to the point it was hot. The menu made a big thing about how the kitchen used a special charcoal to give that authentic BBQ flavour to the steaks. They shouldn't had bothered and there was absolutely no BBQ flavour at all. I sent back my Cauliflower cheese as this was so cold it had congealed. A replacement did appear but only after I had finished eating and the plates were about to be cleared away. We both decided to have the Creme Brûlée for dessert as we felt that given how the rest of the meal had gone, a cold dessert would be cold when it arrived. To our surprise the crisp caramel top was warm and the creme custard was chilled. We can only guess it was blow torched after being removed from the fridge, before being served. However having eaten the dessert we both noticed that there was a small amount black residue left on the inside of the dish it was served in. Given how disappointing the rest of the meal was we didn't even bother to point this out to the serving staff as we had given up at this point. To be honest I wouldn't have even bothered to write a review as the meal was mediocre at best. We both felt we could and have cooked more appealing and flavoursome steak dinners at home. But when you spend just over £100.00 a head on a meal, you do expect and really should get a hot, well cooked, flavoursome meal, instead of the boring cold offering that was served up to us. This would have been a 1 star review if it hadn't been for the staff and atmosphere. But if you want a good hot meal don't book here there are plenty of other good restaurants near the hotel and we wished we had made the effort and booked one of them instead of wasting our money here.

That was absolutely the most TERRIBLE steak I’ve ever had!👎 The meat was bland and it didn’t worth the money at all for what you get on that price! The garnish was elementary school level! The atmosphere of restaurant didn’t even exist! So boring. The only good thing about it was the tall waiter he was friendly and polite. Do not recommend at all 👎

Visited today, we had booked for 12 pm and on arrival was told we don’t open until half 12 and basically told to wait. I don’t know why bookings are taken for 12 if they don’t open u til half past. I asked to speak to a manager to see if we could get our pre booked afternoon tea as we booked prior to the theatre and the staff member was really off with us, it was only by chance a manager walked past and she helped us albeit we were still late getting in. The food was ok but the scones we had on the afternoon tea had been blasted in the microwave, they were rock solid so had to swap all of them and were served microwaved scones again. It’s a shame as the rest of the food was ok but we won’t be returning based on this experience.

Overcooked meat, dishes without flavor, price not in line with quality

Visited here with a group of 10 of us from work on a Friday evening for a retirement meal. We were put in a private area which was cold and did not warm up, considering it was freezing outside that night! Food was nice and decently priced on their set menu, 3 courses for £25. However, would not recommend any large groups to visit as come the end of the night our bill had been totaled up completely wrong, charging us nearly £900 initially. After over half an hour of trying to sort out the bill and being asked to be shown proof of payments on our online banking at 11o'clock at night as the bill was so messed up we had had enough and just wanted to leave which to be honest ruined the evening. I had sent an email to try to get an explanation from management of how it could have ended up such a disaster however after initial contact, no one followed up. Lack of strong management, very un-organized and pretty poor customer service for an establishment that considers itself 'high-end'

Amazing afternoon tea and service! I booked Chez Mal’s afternoon tea for my sisters birthday and it’s been the best afternoon tea experience we’ve had! Everything was delicious! There was nothing on the menu that we didn’t enjoy! 100% recommend!

Quiet and relaxing Monday afternoon cocktail and a light bite. Excellent attention to detail by Antonio who brought our attention to the 3pm drinks offer. So friendly and polite.

They mix a good cocktail but you pay a high price for slow service, lack of atmosphere and a table piled high with glasses. There are much better places in the Mailbox to go for a drink.

I booked two nights at malmaison hotel with the 2 courses and full breakfast. I want to mention that the staff from reception and from the breakfast were amazing ,professionals and kid's friendly. Unfortunately I can't say the same thing about the Manager from the restaurant the food was delicious but the services ... was totally lack of ethics. The second night I was, the Manager from the restaurant knew that I have packages and he sent me a bill of £100 for supplements and he was "busy " 10 -15 minutes ,I explained to the waiter that I have package and that the bill is a mistake then he comes back with a new bill for supplements which I signed after I signed I checked the receipt and I asked the waitress if 2 cheesecake, 1 still water and 1 fruit bol can't be £56 he apologized and he bringed a new bill of £26 and I said that he can put on my room . I had to go to my room with the dessert because my daughter she felt asleep in the restaurant. Few minutes later the waiter appear to my room and asked me to pay the bill because they don't have my card details, I told him that I'm in pijamas and that I can call reception and give my details over the phone he insisted to go at the reception which finally I went. I went to the reception to pay and wasn't possible to pay because the restaurant didn't sent my bill to my room therefore I was with the card at the restaurant and I paid and the Manager assured me that everything is 0 and that he will confirm with the reception. When I checked out in the morning a bill of €50 something was on my room. Therefore the staff from the restaurant tried to over charge me for no reason even I left tips £10 each time I was at the restaurant. I explained at the reception what happened and luckily they believed me and he apologized for the restaurant staff behavior. Now I know that there are camera and they easy can see that last night I was up and down 3 times with the card around 8:30 -9 pm.and they clearly can see that indeed I paid and also I can take bank statements from the bank and show because I live in Birmingham and I can go with the bank statements back anytime. Now this is lack of respect and ethics because they put me to sign a wrong bill then apologies bring a new one but send the old one to the reception. Even the rooms and the food are amazing I will never go to eat at Chez Mal because their behavior and lack of respect I'm a nice person it doesn't mean that I'm stupid.

Loved our dining experience but there were a few things that could have been better; • husbands steak was ordered medium rare...but came medium...it might have been sat waiting and thus wasn't what it could have been - was delicious nonetheless • peppercorn sauce was sweet! I'm used to deep rich flavours and this was overshadowed by sweetness • mac n cheese lacked flavour even with the cheese topping. I didn't know this could even be the case for a classics staple like mac n cheese. We barely touched it. • drinks orders were slow due to the bar staff being busy wuth cocktail week. We managed to get two drinks each the entire meal. The restaurant staff themselves were fantastic and as helpful as they could be. Loved their take on the cob salad. I had it with buffalo wings. I ordered fried pickles expecting only fried sliced gherkins but they were actually fried various pickled veggies which was fun. Overall I would return and be mindful of business etc and try get double drinks and clear feedback on food there and then

Service was great but food was awful. We had afternoon tea and the burger was cold and dry, like all of it was fridge to table. The scones were like rocks. Can only recommend the chocolate ganache tart..rest was a hard pass. (Birthday treat was served on a slate size of table and had to remove it myself so mum could reach her plate 🤦🏽‍♀️)

Quite an exquisite hotel to stay right in the centre of the city, modern looks. The restaurant menu is very limited so don’t get your hopes up. Prices are quite on the upper side.

We had a really lovely afternoon tea here at Chez Mal today November 2022. Sonny our waiter was especially amazing, friendly and very attentive, Chez Mal also had a lovely surprise for us as we were a small group of friends who'd never physically met before. Thank you for making our afternoon even more delightful Sonny.

The cakes were nice, the savoury food was below average, the service was awful. Nobody checked on us at all, we weren’t offered more drinks or anything for the whole time we were there, we had to just keep trying to get the staffs attention. When we came to pay, we had a £40 mal Maison gift card and the restaurant staff were extremely funny about accepting the card, even saying “they couldn’t promise” that we could even use it! Even though we bought it from here!

Came here for afternoon tea, and have to admit I was left feeling somewhat disappointed by the whole experience. Upon arrival and being seated we were offered a tea or coffee, which came pretty quickly. But it was the only hot drink we had during our time there. Some of my party actually requested some more tea - and a pot of hot water arrived, but no tea. The food was ok, but there wasn’t enough savoury food. I had the vegan option; which consisted of a mini beetroot burger, a very small tofu wrap, and a jar of hummus with two of the tiniest slithers of flatbread I’ve ever seen! The bread was so small and limp that I couldn’t even fold it to try and scoop up the hummus. I ended up having to scoop the hummus out with a spoon. As a result I ended up feeling really hungry; much as I like my cake, I was expecting a more substantial savoury selection. At other afternoon teas I’ve had it’s fairly balanced, and the plates are usually refilled. But not here. On a positive note - the cocktails were pretty good. The price was also good, but it was not good value for money. I would come back for cocktails, but not afternoon tea.

Mal maison afternoon tea . Nice enough to look at, and the service was good. But for £20pp the food was nowhere near. The mini slider buns were clearly frozen and weren't defrosted enough which meant when you bit in, there was an ice cold feel and the mini burger which was cooked well went cold before I could eat it. The cakes had very obviously been in a fridge and were cold and stale on the outside. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Absolutely amazing day at Mal maison Spa and gym, we went for my wife's birthday Clare and Katrina gave us great treatments we feel so relaxed, the food and service was amazing at the Mal Basseri, service by Sonny the waiter was so good, he is a credit to the Mal Maison name... thanks again...

Great experience here! The customer service from the staff the male and female who was on duty was so friendly, made you feel very welcome and comfortable couldn’t thank them enough. Food was very nice I will definitely be returning the guy on the bar was also lovely and helpful..thanks guys ☺️

Service and quality of food excellent

I was thoroughly disappointed with the service and food at Chez Brassiere. Staff were lazy and inattentive, noticing us at the reception podium to be seated but didn’t come to greet us until the manager signalled for them to do so ima frustrated manner. The service on the table was confusing as somebody took our drinks and then a second person came to get our drinks order again and when I asked why, it was clear they hadn’t communicated with each other. They were also regularly needing to be reminded of drinks orders as staff chatted amongst themselves quite frequently. We had also pre-ordered our food, as requested, and yet when we were served it was a very different dish to what was presented on pictures (lamb shank). At that, the food didn’t have any powerful flavours and was pretty bland, (except the pilau rice but who goes to a restaurant for pilau rice?). The food came out at different times with as much as 15 minutes between plates. By the time all the food was served, we had to send some back to the kitchen for re-heating. Overall it wasn’t the best Christmas dinner experience and I’m not sure if it’s down to Christmas staff or if that’s just how the company works but I don’t recommend.

Went for afternoon tea to celebrate a friend's 50th Birthday. The staff were amazing, so credit where credit is due. The food was a very different story! It's the worst afternoon tea we've ever had. One of our party had been here twice before for afternoon tea and enjoyed it but ours was awful and definitely not worth the money. After waiting 50 mins for it to arrive...... The beef slider/burger was stone cold, literally straight out of the fridge. (On previous visits this had been hot) The cakes were gluten free and vegan. They were standard on the afternoon tea instead of being offered as an alternative, they left a horrible taste and had a weird texture. Our scones weren't fresh and the clooted cream was missing and instead replaced with yoghurt/creme fraiche with no explanation offered. It was horrible and a terrible replacement for clotted cream. We definitely won't be booking here again and wouldn't recommend it if you're celebrating something special!

Lovely restaurant with a lively atmosphere, great food. Live music was definitely too loud even from the restaurant however the team made an extra special effort for our special occasion meal

Great wee place for nice evening

The staff at the restaurants and bar are work very hard to accommodate your request. They are very lovely and polite. We stayed at the hotel this week. They do a decent continental breakfast and the service by staff at the restaurants was the best part of the stay. Saturday morning was really busy and I am presuming the due to COVID-19 there were only a few staff on site. However, even under so much pressure they seem very calm and polite. Although, its not on the menu when requested if they can make non alcoholic cocktails for us they were more then happy to accommodate our request. The only feedback is I would like to see is more options for non alcoholic drinks or mocktails on the menu. I would come back here for a meal if they were to cater for halal dietary.

Popped in for coffees and desert at the bar. Delicious sticky toffee pudding, but our cappuccinos were not good, no froth at all, more like coffee with milk. didn’t complain, but definitely need some coffee training. pleasant staff, nice atmosphere, very modern feel.

It's a hotel bar, nothing special...

We stayed at Malmaison over Christmas and everything in the Brasserie was just perfect, amazing food and great service by friendly and attentive staff, nothing was too much trouble for them. We decided during our stay that we will be coming back next Christmas, it felt like a real home from home. Thanks for everything Chez Mal team.

Food and table service very good. Bar prices are a rip off £ 4•70 for 2/3rds of a pint very unacceptable. They need to explain why this is "company policy " the bar staff couldn't explain why this was the policy. For this reason I will give it 3 stars.

For a fancy place I would not say the service was great. I enjoyed my starters and the side prawns I had with my steak. The steak itself lacked flavour and the overall experience was not great. Would not return.

My experience at this restaurant was absolutely awful. We booked for a 9pm sitting WEEKS ago. But were made to wait until 10pm until we were shown to our seat!!!!!!! Our mains didn't come until 11pm. After paying an extra £8 supplement each to upgrade to steak...we had what can only be described as the sole of a shoe served to us. Absolutely disgraceful service and food. Ruined our evening and went to bed hungry with no dinner.

Very pleasant lunch with delicious food. Wine is expensive but in line with what you expect in hotels. Staff helpful and friendly. It was busy on our visit and meant it didn't lend itself to an intimate experience, however that did not detract from our experience. Other people were treating themselves to afternoon tea which looked lovely. We hope to treat ourselves to this another time.

Was coming to visit family for my birthday and i had spent a bit of time researching Afternoon Teas in Birmingham- we decided on Chez Mal for its stylish atmosphere and modern twist. We reserved a few weeks in advance and After our visit, my aunt told me when she made the reservation that she told them it was a birthday celebration and they said they would have a celebration cake she even called the day prior to confirm and remind them it was a celebration. Spoiler alert: there never was a cake. Service: They kindly accomodated us an hour early and said that our table had already been prepared for our arrival. We mentioned it was a birthday a few times to no reaction from our hostess/server (she looked like hostess but then she took our orders?). Not everyone is a birthday person, but when your job is customer service it might be considered to, at least, pretend. I didn't know my family had requested the cake in advance so i thought it was a place that doesn't have special birthday things (but with the price and image they are trying to convey? 🤷🏽‍♀️). Our waitress disappeared halfway through our meal and we never saw her again. Had to ask random servers walking by for water and then, eventually, our bill. Food: The food was fine, not amazing (especially considering the price range). They have vegan, dairy-free gluten-free options. I requested the dairy-free menu... the best part was the banana pecan brownie/bread and the chocolate mousse. I was also happy to find they still had a milkshake as part of the sweets for the dairy-free menu. My scones on the other hand were, no exaggeration, inedible. I bit into it expecting the warm soft happiness of my favorite part about afternoon tea only to find a rock hard brick that didn't even soften when i smothered it in jam. It litterally snapped when i broke it apart. I'm not sure i could recommend this to anyone in the area or coming for a visit.

Visited for afternoon tea for a work friends baby shower. The tea was lovely but they are obviously not able to cope with a big group even though we preordered. Badly organised. Wouldn't go again for the price of what we had

Food was overrated.Not worth the money.

This was our second visit. After enjoying a lovely meal here before we decided to have a celebration lunch for my husbands 60th birthday. Food was lovely, really enjoyed it all. Asked for a celebration cake which they said they did but it never arrived. Staff seemed not to know what they were doing. So I was disappointed! Couldn't discuss this with staff as didn't want to upset my husbands day.

Food - amazing taste great! Decent price for the food very happy Staff - awful only reason why we won't come back. No service, no help, food came out late and wrong, could order a drink to save a life. Only got service if we stood up and went looking for staff. Left on our own for all of the night. Took over 40mins just to be given a wine menu. Took over an hour to find staff to pay for the food. They then has the cheek to charge us service charge on our bill, when we had no service! Great food, shocking service and staff.

Went for tea, was disappointed with the amount you got for the money spent. The toilets were a mess. I'm sure a hotel of that standing should pay more attention to detail. Please make sure your toilets are up to a good standard. Standards are very important as I'm sure they know.

Party of 20 so they put us in a separate partitioned area which was nice but not asked for. Bill included charge of £220 for this privilege we hadnt asked for. They did take it off but shouldn't have put it on in first place. Had coq au vin.... sauce was nice but chicken was very dry. Small side amount of mash was pathetic. Others said there food was distinctly average. Only had 1 waitress for 20 so u can imagine she was worked off her feet meaning long waits for drinks. Nice atmos but doesnt make up underwhelming food

Pros and cons..... we booked the club room which was spaces and gorgeous, the room was perfect, we could have extend our stay and not leave the room .... Cons:- the adjoining room decide to come and go from there room from 3am onwards...letting the door slam behind them on 4 occasions ... very kind of them for the wake up call which we didn't need... for a hotel boast quilaty, you think they would have better on the doors to stop them slamming behind you ... Despite this minor inconvenience we would stay there again

We recently book a private dining room for 20 guest on the 6th October. We had one waiter to serve us, which for a large group that's not good enough. Our food arrived loop warm. I also had to wait 25min for drinks I had ordered 3 times. They also made a mistake on the bill. There are better restaurants to eat in at the Mailbox.
