Not much competition around, but then that doesn't matter as they do great light lunches and cakes etc. at a reasonable price. Despite the queue being quite long, service was fairly quick and the staff were friendly - recommended.

Great sausage roll! Choice of three cakes 1 vegan 1 gluten free and 1 “normal’ 😂 loads of choice get over it! Nice spot to take a rest from the trails.

We had a cuppa and slice of gluten free cake from the cafe after our walk and sat by the lake. There was only one gluten free option for cake unfortunately, ginger and lemon, but it was tasty. They could take a leaf out of the book of The Log Cabin at Symonds Yat Rock (also a Forest England site), where there were numerous gluten free lunch options, along with five or six different gluten free cakes!

There is a beautiful lake you can walk around, plus an adjacent café, albeit without inside seating, but with many picnic tables. The range of light and delicious food is well worth sampling. There are also various other facilities that can be sampled, such as canoeing, kayaking and a tree adventure. Plenty to do for all ages!

Under current covid restrictions, you cant enter the cafe. There is a very good system in place at this cafe with all social distancing rules adhered to. There was a little delay on a busy weekend lunch time period but both staff were working very hard to keep all the orders ticking over, just a bit of patience & understanding needed given some of the other reviews during a difficult period for the hospitality sector. Its worth the wait for the pecan choc brownies alone, absolutely divine!

Stopped off at Mallards cafe for lunch with children whilst cycling the family trail. Had a lovely lunch in a beautiful setting overlooking the lake. The food was all fresh and very tasty and they went to great lengths to prepare a special meal for my SEN son. Couldn’t have been more accommodating. Highly recommend.

Be prepared for a long wait as staff unable to cope very well with such small numbers in the queue.£13.10 for 2 coffees and 2 sausage rolls, absolute ripoff. I understand that everyone has overheads but after lockdown is it necessary to charge such prices for unsuspecting people just going to lake for first time then faced with being robbed or going thirsty and hungry for a couple of hours.

Visited because Members of family were going around Go Ape. Very Covid friendly with social distancing. Cafe had good range only one thing to critise if you have a cup of tea ask for 2 teabags as tea very weak and willing.

Lakeside cafe, full English was excellent and the Victoria sponge was the best ever. Quite small, but plenty of seating outside.

The lake is a beautiful place to stop at while walking or cycling in The Forest Of Dean. The cafe is a perfect stop for a relaxing rest but it's a bit expensive and should serve more choice of ice cream, not just tubs.

New cafe at Mallards, nice to have something there but went there on Saturday and not that much choice in the way of ice creams. Just very expensice little tubs. Would be much better if they had a choice of lollies/magnums/cornettos etc, especially for children.

Stayed in Alvington while seeing Tom Jones in Chepstow. Lovely little pub. Classic proper pub. Vintage decor, nice and cosy. Pool table and darts board. Staff were really nice. The little restaurant is on the other side of the building so it doesn’t feel like a gastro pub. Had food there as well a couple of times. Jackson the waiter was nice and polite. Only a young lad. Hope it doesn’t change. Need more classic pubs like this. Really nice place.

We spent a family holiday in Gloucestershire over the half term break and had booked another local restaurant for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately we’d been let down as our booking hadn’t been taken properly however they did us a big favour as we then phoned The Red Hart who were able to accommodate 9 of us for Sunday lunch at very short notice, our ages ranging from 17 to 87! We knew the pub previously having spent several family holidays at Blaisdon Hall as kids. The staff at The Red Hart were really welcoming, it’s a great little country pub and the food was amazing. We returned for dinner a few evenings later. I would highly recommend it!

My husband and I both had severe diarrhoea soon after our meal on Saturday 21 September. He took over 5 days to recover as he actually finished his lamb rump whereas I left half my steak and ale pie and was ill for 2 days. Emailed through The Quality Inn response page to make them aware so they could clean up their kitchen and food preparation. They did not even have the curtesy to reply. What are they afraid of - responding is an admission of guilt? If they ignore us, we might go away? … Shame on you. Beware when visiting the White Hart Inn, Broadoak, Newnham.
