This restaurant moved across the street and down a little bit. They now serve ramen, which my wife said was outstanding, in addition to other fare. My server was able to immediately understand my need for gluten free sushi and told me exactly what I could and could not have. The pickled ginger on my sushi plate was some of the best I’ve had in a long time, not the dyed red garbage from a jar. I would absolutely go back in the future.

Great, affordable food, fantastic vegan options. Our waiter, Su-Rui, was incredibly friendly and efficient and made the visit that much more enjoyable. Really calming atmosphere, that was comfortable and intimate. The décor added to the casual atmosphere as well. One of the few places in Edinburgh that serves exquisite Japanese food, definitely worth a visit.

Went for an impromptu brunch as the place we were thinking of going to were not open. We had two pork tonkatsu ramen, two of the wakame, the pumpkin croquettes, prawn tempura, a sashimi selection and oyster sashimi. The food were very nice but a bit expensive for the portion that you'll get but it's ok seeing as you're in Scotland. The restaurant is a bit small.

Me and my boyfriend had lunch here today and it was honestly the most delicious sushi we have both had in a while! A real authentic gem in the middle of Edinburgh! The staff were also so lovely and friendly and it was a real treat seeing the chef at work who I must say is such a talent!! Eel was delicious and the dragon roll I had was so tasty. Wish we were staying longer as I would go back and try the ramen which looked amazing too! 10/10 and if in Edinburgh you MUST eat here. Go now! What are you waiting for !!

I am more than just fond of Japanese cuisine and I have tried pretty much every place in Edinburgh that claims to serve Japanese food and believe me Maki Maki is as good as it gets. First of all though, I am not comparing this place to the food I actually had in Japan, but to the Japanese food I have had everywhere else outside of it and yes, it is one of the best places I have ever been to.

Found this small cosy sushi bar yesterday on Nicholson street right in the heart of all the events in the edinburgh festival and had the best sushi for a long long time. We had to que for a short time as it was busy and the place only cater for about 8 person. The service was excellent by the young girl serving and the chef. We shared the ramen and the mix salmon sashimi nigiri and California rolls. Very genuine flavours and reasonable price. Good value. We will return. Highly recommended

From the outside this is a very unassuming little restaurant, and you could easily walk/drive by, which would be a shame. The food is excellent! The Japanese Chef prepares your food in front of you, supported by a small kitchen team. The fish is all fresh and cleanly prepared, some locally sourced. Chef is happy to talk to the customers and explain what he is doing. We would recommend you stop when passing for a quick tasty and well priced meal.

This place was literally next road to where me and my friend was staying and decided to have dinner here. Upon entering I realised at how nice the inside is (especially as Southside is a little more high street/university area). The chefs were making the sushi in 1front of you, which was a nice touch and reminded me of the small restaurants in Japan. We ordered the spicy pork ramen, pork gyozas, Salmon plate (sushi), Prawn tempura and sake. All the food was delicious, really enjoyed the ramen the most, loved that the soup was spicy and not mild. I would recommend this restaurant and would definitely come back again.

We were craving for sushi. Googled and landed up at maki maki, a small sushi place on the main road of south bridge. The place consisted of only a small kitchen and counter big enough for about 10 persons. We managed to find a place for 2. Ordered salmon sushi platter, spicy tuna platter and some miso ramen. All were delicious. Good place to tickle-the jap taste buds in Edinburgh.

The sushi was so fresh and tasty. The salmon was buttery and a generous portion. The ratio between rice and salmon was perfect. It' so common to find so much rice rather than salmon and this really ruins the flavor, not only that it barely fits in your mouth so it takes a while to chew.

Maki Maki is a tiny hidden gem of Japanese cuisine in Nicolson Street. I still remember the first times I ate at this place. Opened firstly with a Ramen and Japanese food restaurant, it adopted a bistro concept, with a standard menu. You get what you pay, good money for value. The service was absolutely pristine, the staff worked diligently, the ingredients follow all the requirements, and at the end, the staff members are eager to speak with you. All the team was from Asia, but I am not expecting an austere atmosphere, so I like to see the staff acting naturally. They work hard, and need a fair share of happiness. On my late visit, I and my guest ordered for starters mackerel and pumpkin fritters, for the main course we ate a fiery Ramen. But do not panic, it was delicious, and the noodles tasted neutral. In other words, I do not know how the chefs managed to create that Ramen, and avoid to put extra spiciness on the noodles. Must be a secret! I never tasted fresh mackerel in my life, it was fantastic. We stayed almost one hour and half on the restaurant. In the end, we return to our lives, happy and our mouths spicy. Maki maki, we shall return.

Maki maki seems like a good place to grab a quick bite either alone or with someone else. Service was excellent, we were seated straight away (not a lot of spaces) and the waiter got our coats and hanged them for us. He was also very helpful when we had a couple of questions about the menu and he was smiling the whole time. Food was good, everything seemed to be fresh and was prepared fast. I ordered the salmon, avocado and tobiko chirashi which came with a miso soup. Very tasty although I felt that the salmon was cut too thin and I love my salmon. Then my boyfriend got a pork ramen dish (dont remember the name) and he enjoyed it. We also got the rainbow rolls to share, excellent and tasted as good as they looked. Would revisit.

We found this tiny place just by walking past it while we had an urge for sushi. Nothing on the outside really prepares you for the experience. We were hoping to just get a couple of plates to share, but we ended up going with an Omakase - 12 courses prepared freshly in front of you by the wonderful sushi chef. It's a regular option on menus in Japan, but a complete rarity in Scotland. The highlights were definitely the fresh wasabi grated from a homegrown plant, the red tuna (melts on the tongue!), the sea bass nigiri and the yellowtail nigiri. It's pricier than the other menu options but worth every penny. The fish is extremely fresh and classically prepared - it's excellently seasoned but uncomplicated. The staff are efficient, friendly and very knowledgeable. The restaurant itself is lovely as well - minimal decor, but a relaxing and exclusive vibe.

We found this place just up the road from our AirBnB flat and were staying in Edinburgh for the Fringe. It's a small place but always looked very welcoming and eventually we just had to pop in. Nobody else was there at around 3pm when we were so it was quiet but that just meant we got a good chat in with one of the lovely chefs there while he prepped our order and some other delivery orders. He said most fish is either fresh from the sea around Scotland or especially ordered from overseas from preferred suppliers and you coils taste the quality. The Sashimi was some of the best I've had outside of London and I agree that the freshly grated Wasabi was top notch and rare! Miso soup was tasty and we had some nice warm sake too in traditional sale cups with little sake cup warmers. I ordered bits and bobs off the menu that I knew we'd all like to share between three of us. Only thing that could have been slightly altered was the tempura batter which was a little on the heavy side for me, but otherwise I really can't fault this food! Great service and friendly faces all around. My one regret? No time to return! I sincerely hope it's still there next year, so please keep dining there all you locals and keep this place trading!

Originally intended to go to a better-known ramen restaurant up the road but they were full so we tried this. So glad we did. The pepper beer ramen was fantastic. Broth full of flavour. Seafood ramen also excellent. Nice gyoza. Staff friendly and efficient. Only taking a point off because they add a service charge which has no place in the UK.
