We came here based on positive reviews. But what a terrible disappointment. We ordered coffees and crumpets with avocado and salmon (at £9.50 a pop). We waited 20 mins for the coffee and then another 20 for the food. Whilst the coffees were fine, the food when it finally arrived was cold. I’m not sure if you’ve had a cold poached egg but it’s not an experience I’d want to repeat. When we complained, the manager offered a discount and invited us just to eat the avocado. She also offered to replace the dishes with new ones but having already waited so long we didn’t have time. The manager seemed very put out when we asked for a refund and dealt with us rather rudely. This is obviously a place where there are more covers than they really have the capacity to serve. I will not be visiting again.

On a regular Saturday morning, not even that crowd, I ordered a cappuccino and a flat white to take away. Overpriced, way too small sized and not even filled up to the top. But the most painful thing was waiting ages cause they were putting more effort into making drawings over the milk than actually serving me what I (over)paid for. Much nicer places all around there, not worth the visit.

Love this place and visited it twice last week for a coffee and cake before I headed into work as it's just around the corner. It's the kinda place that you wish was closer to home as it's very cosy and welcoming. So different from the other Islington cafes that feel more impersonal. The coffee is good and the courgette cake I had was fab - fresh, tasty and with flecks of green. It was preferable to the almond crossaint which was one day too old as it has lost its freshness and felt very stale. This was heated up to cover this but it's a different thing to mask.It does get busy in the hours when people get their morning coffees and lunch periods so service can be a bit slow but if you get there a little early or are prepared to wait, then you'll be awarded. This cafe is usually busy and have people that frequently return and I will be one of them.

When I use to live in London this was my favorite cafè. The owner, a young French lady is very sweet and always in a positive mood. The staff is very friendly. The cafè is quite small on Highbury corner but super cute and the food is always fresh and delicious. there is a range of homemade jams from "the London jam factory". you can taste orange, rhubarb, strawberry and lavender... amazing!! I recommend the brioche bread with jam or some cakes. is also very good on Sunday for brunch, delicious pancakes! I love it!!

I often walk in front of this coffee shop while I am going to work, today I get in and discovered they have almond milk, I was very happy so I ordered my almond latte and my pain au chocolat. The baristas werevery nice to me, so I am very sorry to write this review but their niceness was the only good thing For my order I paid 5,50£ (I didn't read the price list, my bad, but for a take away latte and a brioche I would never expect to be so expensive), anyway I thought reading the reviews here maybe it was worth the price. I've got my pain au chocolat straight away, my latte took 10 minutes to get ready despite the barista was just cleaning the coffee area so she wasn't busy (I almost missed my bus), at some point meanwhile I was waiting my coffee a guy walks in and all the baristas and waitresses were there chatting with him in french, forgetting totally about me and other people who were waiting their order. When finally they give me my latte I was shocked, the size was a flat white, very small cup, I sip it and even if the temperature was good the taste was awful, very bitter and disgusting, I bin it immediately. I started to eat my pain au chocolat and the bag that was in (very thin paper) start to fall apart. I had the most negative experience in a coffee shop in London.Even if they have almond milk, even if they are just around the corner I will never step by again.

I used to really love coming here but it's previous success has become a curse it is no too busy to function properly and the staff often seem overwhelmed. Food and drinks can often take a very long time.Getting a table can quite often be totally chaotic as people will cut in front of you to get served and being polite and doing the right thing waiting at the "please wait here to be seated" sign doesn't achieve anything as the inconsiderate line cutters are guaranteed to get served first. If they got themselves better organised I would come back but I'm giving this place a miss for now.

I hardly ever write reviews but have to make an exception for my favourite cafe, Maison D'Etre. Yes, the coffee is excellent, the food is fresh and tasty and well prepared with delicious ingredients, the cakes are fabulous and the service is super-efficient; but those qualities are to be found in some other cafes. However, none of them compare with the remarkable Maison D'Etre, with its unique ambience. It's like a philosophy. The people who work there are happy all the time! The are happy to see you, happy to serve you, happy to chat to you. Their positive energy is wonderful. It makes me want to stay there and not return to work. These people are dangerous, in a good way :)

The reviews suggested this should be a great breakfast...We were seated promptly which was good as it gets very busy. We ordered our coffee as we were seated... We then ordered food 10 minutes later. Our food cam out 15 minutes later. We asked where our coffees were and the team member said she would follow up. The Granola was OK, but there was not much of it. The croque madame looked average and was half eaten. As the team member came to collect our plates, she asked if we still did not have our coffees... We asked to have them placed in take away cups and the team member went to follow up. 5 minutes later we still had not received our coffee. The food was poor and the service was in chaos. So disappointing! We then went up to Vagabond N7 to get our coffee! It was brilliant!

Stumbled into this cafe en route to Highbury and Islington Station. Because it was raining, I took the opportunity to get a cuppa (and a cake!) away from the rain. What's good with it?- Friendly staff - she took the time to explain to me what's what and the food and drink got to me in less than 10 mins- Free WiFi - when I came in, pretty much everyone had a laptop on the table - love the password - letthemeatcake ...- Good food - the vanilla bean cake was quite nice and got given quite a large slice and it's just £3+ and tea in a pot is £2.50- It's cosy - it makes the place feel a lot warmer- Nice musicWhat's not good with it?- It's cosy - I know it's a plus but the down side is that it could get a bit rammed... it's nice when it's quieter (but I'm just probably being a hermit) because you have more room to go on your laptop and not be elbow to elbow with the person next to you, but this is nit-picking really- Food stops at 4pm, so missed out on checking out their specials - Tom Yum Soup - it's priced at £8.50, so am expecting a pretty big bowl for that price... but you do have lots of cakes and baked good to choose fromWould I go back? If I'm in the area, most definitely and would recommend to friends who live locally if they've not heard of it.

Slightly reluctant to write a review, as it will only encourage others to come to this brilliant coffee / brunch / lunch place. But, that would be selfish (even though it is already pretty busy on the weekend). Looks nothing from the outside and right on Highbury Corner next to a takeway........but venture in for a fantastic menu of granola / pastries / sandwiches / salads / smoothies / coffee and cakes. All freshly made and everything good. Highlight was the granola - perfect balance, lightly toasted but not too sweet, delicous yoghurt (thick, but not heavy) pear and honey. Fabulous. No bookings, so you may have to wait. Staff slightly frazzled when full and some orders had to be re-iterated, but all worked out fine in the end.

My travelling companion and I stumbled over Maison D'Etre on its opening day in 2011 and had such a pleasant experience that when I got back to London in May, 2014, I sought it out and was happy to see it was still open for business. The owner, Kim, is friendly and I found the service quick and attentive. I had a fantastic sandwich and a pot of tea, which cost about $13. The front room is very cozy. I sat along a bench in the front window, which provided ample people watching opportunities. And a back room adds more seating. When I mentioned to the owner that my friend and I had been there on opening day, she led me to a faded Polaroid photo still on the wall that she had taken of us that day. I'm returning to London in September, 2014 and have every intention of paying Maison D'Etre another visit.

A nice local cafe with great tea and cakes (which were limited in supply on our visit). We enjoyed our sandwiches and salad and found it difficult to pick from the choices on the menu. The service was a little slow but we'd definitely visit again.

Maison D’etre is a cute, albeit small café full of vintage charm. The decoration, especially in the back room, is detailed with antique designs and wooden cupboards and furniture. Seating in the front area is tight; the backroom is like a conservatory, adds a bit of space, along with an extra touch of character and sunlight. The scones were recommended to me and I went straight for those. I’m a sucker for all things vintage and anything that comes in mason jars so needless to say I made an effort to try all of the flavors of their homemade jams and loved all of them: a mix of gingers, rhubarbs, cinnamons, berries…. The scones themselves were delicious! Scones preferences are subjective – some like them moist, others light or toasty. These were perfect for me, moist and smooth (not necessarily on the light side), and certainly fresh.Scones aside, the menu offers a small selection of what you’d expect from a cozy small café: sandwiches, cakes, and pastries. Fellow friends have said that other eats are hit or miss but for what it’s worth, they look promising. My flat white was solid as well. For a comforting cup of jo and scones alone, I would make the trek again. For everything else, I’d classify it as a great neighborhood café if you happen to be in the Islington/Upper St. area.

Out I went, for a thoroughly intense knees-up with Janto, Chunger and Big Mervyn. After drowning our sorrows with Big Merv’s inheritance from his deid Mam, and ingesting some lighter fluid avec workerman’s glue, we headed to The Joker for a knees up. First in, Chunger got in the pints which were all exceedingly tasty and helped wash down the acrid tang of glue at the back of my throat. It was only after Janto repeatedly and brazenly kept impersonating a couple on a date next to us, by doing the young man’s lovely, soft posh accent that things really got funny. ‘WHAT IS SO FUNNY?’ He boomed. ‘Please let’s just leave, these men are savages and I think they’re on something, they’re out of their heads!’ said his date. We laughed some more and Merv said, too right, we’re out of our heads on good times, and also a heavy dose of my deid Ma’s dosh. ‘You sick freaks’ intoned the gent. ‘You think you’re so funny!’ It was then that Chunger stood up and roared with the strength of a hurricane into his own pint glass - ‘I AM TRYING TO HAVE A LAUGH. MY FATHER WAS NOT VERY NICE TO ME’ We fell about the floor laughing and ordering more pints which flowed as fast as the beautiful currents of the Arno. Things became decidedly ugly when I took a gulp of the young gent’s gravy which was on his plate, but Big Mervyn settled accounts by leaning on the man’s shoulder and whispering a few sweet nothings. Overall, I had a cracking night and the craic was 90 as we Ho Ho Ho’d all the way home with the young couple’s umbrella which they very kindly gave to us, as well as £50, which was very generous.
