Max's Sandwich Shop in Islington

Sandwiches were fine, reasonably tasty but nothing to really write home about. The experience itself was no good - slow service and on one of the coldest days of the year it seemed there was no heating switched on with everyone sat inside wearing their hats and gloves, waiting over an hour for their sandwiches to arrive.

Loved the atmosphere, really good vibes! My sandwich was served coldish, bread was stone cold which isn’t great for a restaurant that’s known for hot sandwiches! I also ordered spuds which never arrived. Max’s won’t be a destination for me but I would go back if Im in the neighbourhood.

This is the best sandwich shop in London, HANDS DOWN! Not only are the sarnies delicious but the vibe is immaculate and the staff are wonderful. Obviously a sandwich is personal preference, but the Hamm, egg and chips is a culinary masterpiece to me. A someone who loves sandwiches, Max's is a comforting home away from home to enjoy a lovely sandwich.

I’ve been once before and the 2nd time did not disappoint. You’re made to feel like you’re just round some mates house and he’s going to make you a sarnie and give you a beer. The chicken sandwich and jalapeño cheese thing, was amazing and I will be visiting for a 3rd time in the not so distant future

Awesome food (my goat korean sandwich was awesome!), service and ambience on a Saturday night out. Also, green wine!! Defo recommend!

Veggie options are weak. Shop is dirty. Staff return to work after smoking outside without washing their hands. Dinghy place living off its previous reputation.

Arrived at 2pm and told to come back at 5pm. I’m glad the place is busy but if it’s that busy take reservations. I really want to try these sandwiches as I’m sure they are good…but I don’t really want to wait 3 hours having already traveled for an hour to get here.

Guys it's COOL. But not like cool "we're smoking behind the bikesheds and you're not invited, Will coz Pete said you're annoying and will tell Miss" Cool like "come on in, we have stylish nice staff who will make you excellent sandwiches and actually you were never even that annoying, Will" Had the veggie option because I'm a great guy. Onion bhaji sandwich that was incredibly well seasoned, great textural balance and just thoroughly herby and brilliant. Also bottomless filter coffee for £2.50 (I think) and it was like I was in a sexy diner. Got a takeaway so I could be smug all over London. Love it. Try it.

Some of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had.

Not worth the wait, average. Waiter told us after we paid that it will take 30min. Ended up waiting 45min and didn’t even get a sorry, despite asking a few times where my sandwich was. Objectively the sandwich isn’t worth £12. It’s rather small, not generous in terms of ingredients and pretty basic. The bread is good though. But not worth queuing for it at all.

Truly incredible sandwiches, it has been on my list for over 7 years and I can’t believe I waited this long! Absolutely worth the trek here

Really loved this place - very unique sandwiches. Tried the Korean goat one, which was lovely. I also appreciated the smaller snack option of a sausage with marmalade! Very friendly service. We’ll be back to try more of the menu.

Hands down the best sandwich shop in London. Better than Rogue Sarnies. Better than Doms Subs. Better than Mondo Sando. Better than Dusty Knuckle. The list goes on… Get the ham, egg and chips and a portion of spuds. You won’t look back. Service is also always great. You might have to wait but it is truly worth it.

Excellent sandwiches and sides were fab too. Certainly plan to go back again soon.

We had the kimchi spring roll sandwich - was delish! Recommend the fried potato side dish too. Great chilled atmosphere and very friendly staff. Bit expensive for what it is.

V good. Will be back. Not too busy for Friday lunch 1pm walk. V limited veggie options, spring rolls lacked crunch, sandwich unevenly sliced (v thin bottom). Super tasty, massively preferred to Dom's Subs, on par with Rogue Sarnies.

Food was good enough but with their prices already high, the 25% service charge they placed on our order, after having forgotten it and taking 45 minutes to bring us a sandwich, was eye-watering. We ended up paying £25 per person for a sandwich and a michelada. Hard not to conclude that there is better value food and experience elsewhere.

Soo banging couldn't fault anything, ham and egg sandwich was special and we loved the mac and cheese balls

Spring roll sandwich was not good. Bread to insides ratio was off. Too saucy as well.

The chicken is my favorite, followed closely by their rotating goat sandwich with different vibes. I love this place. Highly recommend, is properly messy for a damn good sandwich.

So sick and tired of how this shops customers stand outside every weekend like fools obstructing the public pavement. I don't know what the hype is about this place, but the original people (not these fake out of town non Londoners) of Crouch Hill should be able to walk on the pavement freely and safely without all the shops customers standing in the way. No one should have to walk in a busy road with double decker buses and all other sorts of vehicles just to walk past this shop. Islington council sort it out!

Having seen Max on MasterChef a few years back, I was inspired to try his place. Went for the first time yesterday on the way to the Arsenal vs Leicester match, and bought myself the Spring Roll sandwich, which was truly scrumptious. Added to the fact that the staff were very friendly and the service was excellent, I will definitely coming back in the not too distant future!

We tried two different sandwiches, one ham, egg and chips, one Tikka other piece (goat masala). Both delicious. The Hofmeister Zero lager was nicely chilled too. It's not cheap but it is rather special. One tip is, if you go on a busy day, especially when there's an Arsenal home match, be prepared to wait. There was even a queue outside waiting for takeaway orders. Cameron kept us informed and gave us mac'n cheese balls to try, but it's very popular so just be aware!

Not the best if you’re not a meat eater

Absolute fantastic sandwich shop with specials on rotation that have you coming back. These are messy sandwiches and need the proper care and attention such masterpieces deserve. Well worth it, also recommend grabbing a sandwich and heading a few meters over to The Robin. A fantastic pub with live jazz

Great and unique sandwiches. We ordered Et tu brute (a take on chicken Caesar), ham egg n chips and a Mac n cheese ball. The ham egg and chips sandwich is exactly as delicious as it sounds, no notes. Was let down slightly by the chicken caesar sandwich - could do with some bacon/parm/a saltier element. Was just a tad too tangy/sweet. The Mac and cheese ball was delicious but needs dip. Service was nice and efficient, we were told 15 minutes and waited 15 minutes on the dot. Overall, would be perfect if the sandwiches were maybe 2 quid cheaper.

Great service! Delicious and tender food, bread is so soft it’s like eating butter. I love love love their goat tikka masala, such a gem! It’s dog friendly and the space is not very big but the service it’s amazing and friendly! Defo a must when in Finsbury!

Ordered spuds for takeout and it’s the BEST POTATOES I’ve ever had in my life. I’d run back for seconds if I wasn’t already in my pj’s. Wish I ordered more and tried out their sandwiches. Will be back for sure!!

The lasagna sandwich is the most magical and magnificent thing I have ever stuffed into my face. With each individual bite i was delighted and perplexed- how could a sandwich actually be this effing good. But it is. Im still thinking about this sandwich all day. Im not sure where the line between obsession and desire is anymore.

Really good sarnie. I was worried the bread would be stodgy and thick but it was fluffy and light. I should have got two because I was hungry when I got home. The potatos looked insane to. Good filter coffee in a lovely mug. Brilliant music playing overhead.

Absolutely Bussin… Can’t say this lightly, but I never thought that the fairly banal task of making sandwiches could be an art, until I walked through the doors of Max’s Sandwich shop. A small menu, but very well done, the portion sizes are pretty decent for the price. The sandwiches are cooked and the unique fillings aren’t something you would think of when packing lunch for the office. The joint has a casual millennial, hipster-ish vibe, which certainly aids in digestion.

We aways come here when we get an opportunity to be in this bit of town. Awesome, unique and tasty sandwiches (had the lasagna one yesterday and I think it was one of my faves, alongside ham, egg and chips). Drinks are awesome, discovered here that the Ceaser cocktail is my favourite. Great vibes, staff, decor - just all round good fun 😊

Max always has and always be the go-to place in London. Travel far and wide for these mammoth sarnies and delicious sides and the great team and service. Greeted as a friend and treated like royalty! Also the decor will always give you something to smile about!

Been trying to get here for a while and wasn't disappointed. We tried 3 sandwiches, all of which on paper shouldn't work but we couldn't have been any happier. Absolutely wonderful ideas surrounded by the best sandwich bread ever. Super friendly and chilled out atmosphere make this a great place to grab some food and have a beer!

I had a very tasty lasagne sandwich while my wife had a chicken sandwich that was nice but not as good as the Lasagne one. Service was fine. My drink was overpriced but overall a good experience.

Everytime I go there; It’s such a treat The service is always very warm and friendly I moan when I eat my ‘et tu brute’ sandwich, a mix of sour, crunchy, tasty, juicy… 🤤 The Mac ‘n cheese balls are delicious I recommend a pickle back and their cider ! But also, the music, the deco, the fun … I am a fan !

I had high expectations of this place, but did not like it. Sandwich was ok ish, not many options to pick from though. Bit pricey for what it is, bread was ok but overall I did not see what s the big fuss. I will not return. Also, bit dirty inside and the rug is just discusting! Toilet have no words how dirty it was

Great sandwiches and lovely atmosphere. I went there with a friend and we really enjoyed our dinner out. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, the food was yummy and they have amaro too!

The sandwiches were delicious, but they were a bit smaller than expected, so I found them to be a bit overpriced at £13. We went in for takeaway, the staff were friendly and our order was prepared quite quickly.

Was excited to try but left wondering what the fuss was about. Not bad, but not as good as dusty knuckle, grove lane deli, etc Also took ~40 mins to get a sandwich once inside, after waiting outside for ~30 mins

The Korean sandwich was amazing - the addition of the fried noodles and the kimchi made such a difference. Honestly worth the 16km run to try it.

What a sandwich 🥪 excellent atmosphere and the food was just brilliant was not 100% sure about a sandwich for dinner but this was total the right choice. Could be good to have another veggie option in the menu and a non alcoholic beer but that's would just add to the experience.

I went here today and had the Ham egg and chips sandwich. Also ordered a Negroni. The sandwich was outstanding, the staff were welcoming and service was great. Not enough places like this in London in my opinion. I went all the way from Shepherds Bush to try it out so I wouldn’t be a regular but I would definitely make the pilgrimage over there from time to time. It’s worth the hike trust me!

One of the BEST sandwiches I've ever had! A random find that turned into a place I'll definitely go back to! Sandwiches are flavourful and packed with fillings. Plus, you get a glass of tap water as soon as you sit down (great service)! I recommend The Korean Gangster and the Ham, Egg 'N' Chips! Can't stress it enough, go HERE!

the vegetarian sandwich was SO GOOD I'm still thinking about it, a bit pricey but worth it. we only had to queue for 20 mins or so, and they were really understanding and helpful with my mate who has lots of allergies and food-restrictions. and it's dog-friendly! 10/10

Wow - the rumors about Max’s is true! This is one of londons, if not the, best sandwich joints. As we were here for brunch it would have rude not to hit the Ham Egg & Chips sandwich! Knockout. Service is simple, entertaining and prompt. Can definitely recommend a cup of Joe, will be back next time for the house special cocktails. 🍸

The thing about having the best sandwich in the world is you’re sure as hell not gonna think to take a photo (or video) until your halfway through (or done). And that’s exactly why you’re watching a video of 1/2 a gluten free ceaser salad sandwich (which had a much pithier, wittier name than how I’ve just described it - and which was made on pretty abysmal gluten free bed from the corner shop - but which somehow made the best sandwich I’ve EVER HAD) and the remaining crumbs from the Korean sandwich (which also was much more eloquently described on the menu). Long and short of it is - come to Max’s. This place is phenomenal. Can’t wait to return!

A fabulous sandwich! One of the best i’ve ever had in London. It was so busy that i got take away and despite being stuffed in my backpack for 40 minutes, it was perfect when i unwrapped it at home. Great place, i will be back!
