If you are trying Haggis for the first, second or third time, this location is a great place to try it. The Haggis is very tasty and comes as a small serving (if you like) so great for trying or as a snack. This restaurant is located in the lower section of the city and well worth looking for. Keep an eye out for men in kilts😘

Restaurant only half full on a Saturday night and I think I know why; we were all still hungry after 2 courses! The atmosphere was good and the staff were nice but small portions and hellish expensive for what you get. On arrival we were given bread and dipping oil with balsamic vinegar - French bread should have a nice crust which their bread didn't though. For starters 2 of us had calamari which were tasty but soggy and 1 had a Chinese style beef thing which was also v nice. Main courses were coconut chicken with rice, gumbo and beef cheeks with mash - all very tasty but slightly larger than a starter size! We also all had a glass of wine each. £88 for 3 people which did not include the bags of chips we bought on the way home! The bill did not include the 'pay it forward' option so we paid extra so a homeless person can have a decent meal but I hope they get a larger portion than we did!!

This restaurant is now rebranded as "Vesta". The idea of good vegetarian and vegan food is a good one and they have retained the social aspect of "paying forward", however the prices have risen dramatically and there is no longer a fixed price lunch and dinner menu. This is a mistake and I am fairly sure they will lose custom as a result. Visited this restaurant for lunch last week - bearing in mind that this was during the Festival, I would have expected the place to be very busy. However this was not the case and I suspect the prices may have something to do with this. There is no fixed price lunch menu. Given that there are many other places in this area that do offer a fixed price menu, I think Vesta may live to regret no having such an option. Whilst the menu was imaginative and the food itself was good, it was not outstanding and we all felt it was overpriced for what it was - eg roast duck salad consisted of a large bowl with four or five slices of duck and a very large amount of lettuce. At £12.50 for lunch, this does seem pretty expensive. We did not have dessert as by 2.15pm, 2 of the items (there were 5 in total) were already unavailable. Whilst not particularly busy, the service was not quick. A good 15 minutes between clearance of our bread & olives before the main courses (all salads) arrived. Regrettably we will not be back. Such a shame as the food choices are imaginative and the pay it forward idea is a great one but unless prices are reduced or a reasonably fixed price menu is introduced, I suspect Vesta in its current form will not survive.

As business travellers to Edinburgh we didn't really plan where to eat. We stumbled across this place after the first one we went into was only seating people with reservations. The wait staff seemed either like they'd had quite a hard service, weren't quite a cohesive team or were tired. That being said they were affable enough and brought our Ford and drinks to us when ready. The food was excellent we had stayed and mains. My colleague ended up having a pudding as well since his dinner was about half the size of mine. I had the lamb shank and he had the beouf Bourgogne (spelling?) he had the pudding and we had a pleasant low key meal. The prices seemed reasonable.

We had an excellent lunch here last week in all aspects ........... quality of food and service and value for money too ! What’s not to like about that. With the added bonus of being able to ‘Pay it Forward’ too by donating anything from a £2 coffee upwards to the Social Bite work. This venue was the express choice of the graduate herself as her social conscience and love of good food could be enjoyed/fed simultaneously. We will definitely visit again to try their evening menu which reads very well.

I use this restaurant a lot. I want to continue to support this but someone has stopped looking after it. Really badly. it is such a great concept and I have taken lots of people here since it opened for business meals as well as socially. I took a friend recently and she was the first to point out the food splatters up the wall right next to where we were eating - it was seriously off putting. Just basic freshness and cleanliness. the downstairs toilet was really unclean, just basic things. why would you leave a filthy toilet brush out? I don't get it - maybe other people don't either at the moment because it used to be really busy but was very quiet that night. I hope things change and it gets some t and c. there is so much great and well priced competition right round the corner .

Went here for a recovery meal after the Edinburgh Marathon. Lovely friendly staff and amazing food. Only slight issue was that they had run out of a few things including the beer that I was drinking. Set menu is really good value for money and like I say it’s all delicious. The best thing though is that you can ‘pay forward’ for a meal for a homeless person who have exclusive use of the restaurant on Mondays. It’s a fantastic concept and really does work.

The restaurant is definitely worth visiting. Even though it is not the cheapest restaurant, but you get what you pay for. We managed to get a deal - 2 courses + glass of wine for 17.95 and it was great. I tried pulled rabbit for my main and it exceeded my expectations. The interior of the restaurant is really beautiful making you feel cosy and relaxed. The staff was brilliant, too. the guy who served us was very chatty and informative. and after all, the restaurant is one of the greatest places to eat at because of its contribution towards improvement of homeless people lives. therefore, I would highly recommend to go there if you are in edinburgh and have a nice dinner knowing that your money is going to be used for a good cause

We booked here as we were up on a visit for a few days and my wife saw that it helped out the homeless by doing a pay forward scheme. The food was excellent as was the service, as soon as we sat down we were offered table water (something you normally have to plead for at other restaurants). The choices we made for dinner were great although if i am totally honest the portion sizes could have been a bit more (but then i am big lad so that shouldn’t surprise anyone). The only reason its not getting a 5 is that the stairs leading up to the toilets could do with some attention, it looks like you are going out the back where they store spare tables. If they spend a bit of time sorting that then it will be fantastic. All in all i would highly recommend this restaurant as it gives something else in what is a highly competitive market.

This restaurant has very attractive decor and I chose to eat here because it looked so appealing from the exterior. I received a friendly welcome and the service was very good throughout. Venison carpaccio to start was lovely, though I'd probably say there could have been a little more of it. The chicken tagine main course wonderfully tasty and a decent size portion. Good home-baked (I think?) bread. A couple of minor gripes - cheap napkins and certainly not what I would expect for a £30 meal. The staircase down to the toilets looked decidedly grubby, again not befitting the price-tag. Apart from that I'd say a great place to eat and I would definitely visit again.

We went her last night for dinner as part of an itison deal - 2 courses and a glass of wine. The restaurant was fairly quiet when we arrived so pretty much had pick of the tables which was nice. The waiter then came over and handed us a specific itison deal menu - which made you feel slightly cheated as on buying the deal it didnt say it would be a reduced menu. Having said that the menu we were offered did have plenty of variety to pick from. The starters all sounded very good but we both opted for the calamari as I have had it before and it is so good. For mains we asked our waiter if the mains came with any vegetables or should we order separately (happy to pay for the additional dish) we were told it came with mash. Well when my dish (beef) arrived it came with 3 of the smallest dollups of mash I have ever seen! If I had known this I would have asked for a side of mash as well as veg. From partner went for the chicken in Gruyere sauce which again came with minimal mash and given the sauce it could really have done with more or the option of veg. As I say we had asked our waiter if we could buy more veg as a side but were assured we wouldn't need so did feel slightly cheated when our dishes came. The food was very good - its just a shame as it would have benefited from the option of some side vegetables or a bit more mash to enjoy the sauces a bit more as part of the meal.

A great little restaurant as you head into the West End of Edinburgh from Princess Street. The food was superb as was the service from the front of house and the serving team. The refreshing side to this place was the charitable aspect of the business, being run as not for profit, with 50% of the profit being donated to the local homeless charity’s with the other 50% being split between other worthy causes. In addition you can also ‘pay forward’ ie add a donation to your bill to pay for a meal for the less fortunate who are welcomed into the restaurant daily between 3 and 5 for food and company. An excellent idea done without compromise of a lovely atmosphere and great food and service. A lesson to be learnt here for other similar establishments, particularly those headed by celebrity chefs who have done very nicely for themselves over the years. Well done you guys. Most recommended, will definitely visit again

My boyfriend and I decided on a starter and main course. Unfortunately the starter I chose wasn't available, and my boyfriend had to decide upon a different main course. Not to worry, these things happen. I have to point out the fact that both our starters came out almost cold, so not very impressed with that. The main course was another disappointment unfortunately. For the price we paid I would have expected a much higher standard. I always go on trip advisor before booking any restaurant, I am clueless as to why this place gets such a high score!!!

I had the cullen skink but it tasted pretty thin and basic, no bits of fish nor potato to be seen. It came with nice bread. For the main dish I opted for the chicken tagine and my god, did it look sad: 2 pieces of skinny chicken legs and some floating peas but thankfully a generous portion of couscous. I am not sure if this dish was aptly named as having eaten the same in Marrakesh I really was looking forward to it. So, unfortunately well disappointed. I was expecting more from this place but what I found was a sense of confusion and not a defined idea of the type and origin of the food they would like to serve. As the name suggests it should be more French inspired but then you can find tapas style dishes which all taste the same as they get served with peppers (commonly Mediterranean). Among the dishes we had, the chicken skewers were very dry and the calamari rings' coating was quite wet and not crispy at all. The haggis balls had a similar coating as if they came out of the microwave.

Overall a disappointing experience, particularly as we were with friends who had been before and thought the food much better on the previous occasion. We felt the place is confused as to what it is offering - is it serving bistro type food as typified by many of the dishes or does it aspire to something more sophisticated as other dishes (and the prices) would indicate. The erratic portion sizing just reinforces the sense of confusion. The food overall was OK but for nearly £30 a I expect better than just OK. The one area of consistency was the dessert menu which would have shamed the average pub even without two of the five choices being unavailable (at 7.30 in the evening)

Abbiamo cenato in questo locale arredato in modo molto carino. Personale gentile. Piatti buoni ma non eccellenti ma adeguati per il prezzo.

The sentiment and social conscience behind here is fantastic and very admirable especially in a society where excess is not frowned upon.

The cassoulet was hugely disappointing - despite the boast that they simply couldn't take it off the menu due to popular demand! - basically it was a microwaved sausage and duck leg on what tasted like tinned beans. Awful. The food was served boiling hot fresh from the microwave - we couldn't actually eat until it had been in front of us for about 4 -5 minutes. It was so bad we nearly refused to pay. Thank God L'escargot blanc is nearby for authentic French food cooked with love.

Good food and a wonderful concept! At least one day each week, staff provide regular, restaurant meals to local homeless people, paid for from profits from other customers. "They're being served the same food as you're being served", explained our waiter, which we thought was a brilliant and generous way to overcome the stigma of traditional foodbanks. Since prices were not at all high, staff must be devoting considerable effort to this project. Plus, as my wife noted, it's probably the only time in our lives that we have eaten at the same restaurant as had George Clooney!

Although they said they had no record of our booking (my friends had actually walked in the night before to book!), we were able to enjoy a lovely meal at this socially aware eatery. Fresh ingredients well cooked and presented in a relaxed atmosphere meant for an enjoyable evening. A huge bonus is the concept of paying forward, meals for the homeless, etc. Very good indeed!

I love the mission of Social Bite that MB@H supports which perhaps had them on the front foot with my opinion.

Went to Maisonettes Breuer recently and has a really pleasant meal. The food was excellent and the service was very friendly indeed. The only slight criticism I have, was that the white wine was not chilled enough and we all thought that the main Course portions could have been slightly larger. Other than that, we had a really nice meal.

Nice place, helpful staff, and good food but the portion size and therefore value for money was poor. e.g £10.95 for 3 merguez sausages. Wouldn't go back.

We were a group of friends wanting to chat and had a lovely meal with good service that was not at all intrusive. We never felt rushed but the food was served quickly and was delicious. The waitress was helpful with recommendations whilst choosing drinks and food - we had an excellent get together. It was easy to add extra money to allow others to have a meal at our expense.

Tried out this restaurant via a Groupon voucher and really impressed. Quality of food is excellent and really tasty. Saw on the menu there are fixed price options that are really reasonably priced so definitely a go back to place. Staff were really friendly and I liked the decor of the restaurant, it gave out a really good atmosphere. Most definitely would recommend.

This is a nicely decorated restaurant with decent food and good service. Had the calamari starter which was very tasty and the beef starter though the beef was overcooked. My beef cheeks were very tender but was missing some vegetables. Lastly we ordered a crème brule which was huge and a lime panna cotta which unfortunately was too set. Overall food was almost there with some tweaks. Very good service as well

Had lunch here with a friend. The table d'hote suited us both and with a bottle of Picpoul and a shared chees plate we came out at £27.50 each. The terrine was delicious and the sea bream too - only quibble was the identical heap of leaves with both.. Pal had the quails egg with black pudding (plus more ditto leaves) and a meat course I cant remember but she liked.

Interesting restaurant which give half of its profits to charity, & you get the opportunity to pay for extra meals for the homeless, which they close the restaurant every Monday just for the homeless to come & eat! Good quality food too at reasonable prices! Well worth visiting.

We've eaten here a few times now and the food, drinks and service have always been high quality. Our Hogmanay visit was especially good. Make sure you 'buy forward' a meal for a homeless person.

My wife and I went to Maison Bleue at Home on an Itison voucher as it looked interesting. I had the Calamari starter, and my wife took the veggie option of aubergine. Calamari was nothing special - just battered and deep fried, and with it came a spicy pepper based sauce which was way over the top with salt, confirmed by my wife. My wife's Aubergine starter was disappointing as well, and for £6-50 seemed very expensive for what she had.

My wife and I had lunch at this restaurant and she had a starter and main from the a la carte and I had mine from the set menu. My starter was terrine with out biscuits and chutney, and lots of it followed by bream with potatoes. Both dishes were tasty, well presented and filling. My wife had coated haggis balls deep fried followed by spinach and cheese chausson and again was tasty and filling. We share a bottle of white wine from the not over priced menu. The restaurant is linked into Social Bite to help others achieve there potential goals in the service sector. Well worth a visit.

Had a wonderful meal at home. It's for a great cause which the staff were very passionate about. They give you the option to "pay it forward" with a meal for the homeless too which is a great idea! The food was fantastic and very fairly priced and the staff were able to recommend appropriate dishes for our group. Would highly recommend.

Fabuleux !

Unprofessional and not clear with their rules, didn't let people in for being under 18, even tho the event organisers made it clear that it's for under 18 aswell. The guard / one in charge/ jennie was also SMOKING INSIDE THE BUILDING.

The noodles were excellent thick and chewy. The braised beef brisket was full of flavour, tender and bitey. The broth was very flavourful. It retained clear nourishing quality. If you look for a freshly- made beef noodle soup in Edinburgh, look no further. It is a place you simply must try.

First night of Lotus Leith was fab… Thai prawns… the juiciest satay chicken… flavourful fluffy bao buns and homemade dumplings and spring rolls 😊 All served with the tastiest asian slaw that I’d happily scoff a bowl of on its own…. Give it a try. Can’t wait to see how the menu develops 😊
