Delicious meal with friends - loads of tasty starters and really well cooked, the home made pineapple chutney and the duck samosas on the Chef’s Special menu were a real stand out

Came here on a Thursday night after looking all around Clapham for a decent Indian and was pleasantly surprised! The food was top quality and the service was incredible. The food came out in good time and we were even served a complimentary dish by the chef! I definitely will be coming back and making this my regular Indian whilst I am around the Clapham area. If you are in and around the Clapham area it would be a mistake to miss out on Maharani!

Maharani in Clapham is hands-down one of the best Indian restaurants I've visited in London. From the moment we walked in, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between cozy and vibrant, making it great for both a relaxed dinner or a special night out. This is a regular dining spot for me and my 5aside team who also happen to be the best in South West London, we regularly refuel with a trip to Maharani and it never lets us down!

This review is backdated 6 months! Cockroach in food warning**** We used to come here all the time and loved it but now it's totally different, it's not the old Maharani. The old large unit has been split into 1 smaller one and we were told it's because of cost saving/ scaling back but after having the food here I believe it's different owners using an old renowned name. The food was the blandist food we have ever eaten, everything tasted like decimated coconut, so so sweet. The onion bhaji were also totally bland and chewy and thick and clunky with flour. Add to this my curry had half a cockroach in it 🪳. I raised the issue and was told "we have no idea how that got in there", well neither do I!!!! They gave me a free bowl of ice cream and took off just the curry. I was so angry I just paid it anyway and left. Truely not like the old Maharani.

So lucky to have Maharani as my local! Would highly recommend. Delicious food

27 February 2025 The food wasn't good. We sent the poppadoms back because they were stale and chewy - the replacements weren't any better. I ordered butter chicken, what I got was chicken korma. I asked the waiter to confirm and he said it was definitely butter chicken. It absolutely was not, my friends tasted the dish and all agreed it was korma. There were even almonds on the top of the dish. I explained again to the waiter that the dish was clearly korma and that there was not a hint of tomato. The waiter said there was no tomato in the butter chicken recipe, however after seeing the description on the menu (coconut & tomato sauce) he spoke to the chef. He returned to our table and said the chef made a mistake. Just awful!

As my first time Maharani I was really happy with the variety of dishes on the menu. Included good vegitarian option as I am a meat eater but love a variety! The staff were super friendly and attentive, they recommended the saffron gin that went really well with my meal.

I give high rating based on multiple dining visits, always leaving happy. I order bread (generally roti) with vegetable dish and black coffee. Roti is decent sized and vegetable jalfrezy (ordered today) came out really tasty and satiating. Coffee was quality. Customer service is quick and hospitable. If I visit again, I'll look forward to it.

New menu and dishes ...... improved since the son took over managing the restaurant.

We hosted a birthday dinner here on friday and everything was 10/10. The service was fantastic, we were so well looked after and the food was even better, it was fresh and delicious as well as reasonably priced. No request was too much for the team, they made sure we had a wonderful time. We will be back often.

I have frequented this place for the last 17 years and used to love the food but found it underwhelming the last few visits. Things went downhill after the renovation- please bring the old menu back 9I have a copy if you need it), rehire your old chef, there are hardly any paneer or veg mains either.

First visit on a Saturday eve with a group of four. Staff were perfect.. friendly & helpful without being overbearing. The food ( including one veggie option) was delicious and plentiful . To top it all they gave us some Indian delicious to take home . Highly recommended

Our go-to Indian in Clapham. The food is delicious and we always have a great experience. The staff are so lovely especially the young lad who was working at 6.30pm on the 23rd Nov. It's the little touches like opening the door for you as you leave. We didn't catch his name but he's always so lovely :) Highly recommend!

My recent visit to Maharani, an upscale local restaurant, was quite underwhelming. Despite the appealing ambiance, the overall experience fell short of expectations. The food, though nicely presented, was ordinary in taste. Additionally, the portions were surprisingly small, especially given the extremely high prices. We ordered four dishes, and our bill amounted to a staggering £106. To make matters worse, the staff added a service charge of £11 without any prior notice, making it feel imposed and unwarranted. The disappointing food quality, meager servings, and hefty prices likely explain the sparse crowd in such a large venue. While the ambiance was the only redeeming aspect of the visit, substantial improvements are needed in other areas.

The dishes were delicious! This is my second visit, and I’ll definitely be back again. This time, I tried the chicken sholay. It was tasty but quite spicy. Next time, I’ll opt for something milder.

We live locally to Maharani and have eaten here several times. As a rule we like to try new places but the food here is that good that whenever we feel like Indian it is the only one we want to go to. Lovely service as well.

My husband and I travel a lot around the world. Last month we visited London for 4 days. We visited Maharani. We loved it. I like strong flavors and I found that here. I was able to taste amazing new flavors in Maharani. We really enjoyed it and went back to our hotel happy to have chosen Maharani. Flavorwise, it’s the best Indian restaurant I have dined in.

The new interior layout is very modern and cool. The service is on point, polite and attentive. The food took a little time to arrive but it was all cooked fresh and worth the wait. 6 people with drinks just shy of £100 great value. A steadfast character of Clapham High Street. Thank you

In my view, this is actually a Bangladeshi restaurant that also serves Indian-style food. Staff were really friendly, most of the food was delicious. The starter, king prawn butterfly was a real miss for me. It does cater well for vegetarians and it serves alcohol-free beer, which is a great bonus. It’s a personal taste, but we both definitely preferred the old Indian “curry house” red decor and atmosphere before the renovations and the size reduction. Nevertheless we had a great evening, we enjoyed the food, and we will be back.

I've been visiting this restaurant for more than ten years and have consistently enjoyed delicious meals, which leaves me utterly perplexed by some of the negative reviews. Myself and a group of our friends have participated in a "curry club" for many years, dining across the country, yet we frequently return here as one of our favourites. I highly recommend the Lamb Pathia. In my humble opinion, like any Indian restaurant, it's better to dine in than take away.

We wanted to love it. The servers were very nice. The prawns were in a gloppy sauce and were maybe minced? Not identifiable as prawns. The naan was ok. Biryani was good. The rice was great. The saag aloo was greasy. And at 630, we were the only people there. A sad experience. Sweet atmosphere—they really need a new chef.

A fantastic gem of a place. Exceptional cuisine which brought back my childhood memories. Every item was amazing, the lightest fluffiest naans, bite sized onion bhajis, juicy tandoori chicken, tangy king prawn dansak, and warming lamb methi washed down with perfectly balanced mango lassis. The staff were friendly and looked after our every need. Can’t wait to try more menu items. Will definitely be back again and again.

My family and I have been eating at Maharani’s since 1990. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. We love the chicken tikka masala, prawn curry and cauliflower bhaji. We’ve since moved back to Canada but everytime we are in London, we always make a special visit to Maharani. The quality of the food is consistently good and we are never disappointed.

What a very trendy warm atmosphere restaurant. Cody furnished and practical layout, nice music. A very nice restaurant to enjoy a dinner. The papadom was great we start and we chose for the Maharani platter, fresh delicious snacks. Our main course was the Delhi chi curry, Goan king prawn curry, Aloo Gobi and the dhaal maharani. We chose completely different dishes than standard. But such a delicious, authentic Indian meal with a nice twist. It was worth eating 2 km further. Too bad we couldn't have more desserts! But we would love to come back. In short, don't miss this address.

A bit unplanned we chose this restaurant to eat on a Saturday evening, it was very good, poppadom we’re served with a very sweet mango, my butter chicken curry was delicious, I had it with a garlic, chilli cheese nann, it was good together. My partner said the onion Bahaji had a food gram flour dough to them! He had a chicken madras which he said had a good tomato flavour. Service was good, restaurant seemed clean and price was reasonable.

We reunited with our family members in Maharani. The food was delicious and of excellent quality. Lamb Tarkatan and lamb Biriyani were exceptional. The two waiters, Mujib and Rasel, provided outstanding service. They treated us with the feeling that they were our family. We plan to come again.

This is a really great indian food restaurant, I have been coming on & off since the 1990s. I have been eating 'Indian' vegetarian (mainly Bangladeshi) food since I was a child in the 1970s; I am very fussy about food quality and taste and this is one of my 4 favourite in London. The service is very good too and the owner or his son is often there when I go and is very friendly too. Sometimes the food takes a while to come but I always find its well worth the wait! A friend I sometimes come with likes this place a lot too.

Really lovely and friendly staff (Rasel especially)- my food was also on the table within 15 minutes of ordering and it was still steaming on my table it was so hot when they brought it. Nice curries, quite expensive for what you get but decent. Service couldn't complain, staff were attentive and fast. The beer was flat and smelt very sulphuric, we did mention but staff didn't really care, such a shame as this made a big difference to our experience

I wish I had of read the reviews before I ate in this ‘restaurant’. The food was so bad. The chicken was so tough it was not possible to cut with my knife- the chicken in a masala is supposed to be tender . I was asked if the food was ok , I complimented that the rice (which was really good) but demonstrated that the chicken was very tough. To my surprise the waiter said it was supposed to be tough! This is not true : It is supposed to be tender. The owner said ‘every one likes our food’. The recent reviews show they certainly do not like this food. Many people have complained about the poor standard of food Not the customer service anyone would expect. I paid my bill … lesson learned… but I would avoid which is a shame as this was once a really amazing restaurant .

The highlight was leaving. Have eaten here before a couple of times (& before the recent remodeling). Food was OK. The chicken pieces in my dish very dry, which is pretty hard to achieve in a curry, if you've cooked it traditionally. To the manager. Please tone down your up-selling from 10/10 to 1/10. We saw the funny side....as it was very much a "mosquitos at dawn" selling technique; and a little like being in a situational comedy (Fawty Towers comes to mind). The icing on the cake - and truly memorable - was the bright yellow highlighter on the Bill. Don't recall seeing that ever before on any restaurant bill. Too funny. Oh BTW....Thursday is a "discount night", so perhaps that explains the anxious upselling? My suggestion....ditch it, and go back to being service oriented.

Maharani gave me diarrhoea, possibly with malicious intent. The guy on the phone refused to acknowledge the discount on his own website, so I hung up and ordered (again) on the Web (since it failed the first time due to poor design). When I called (yet again) to confirm my order, I heard someone angrily grumbling about a "mistake" in the background. Whether vindictively or otherwise, the food was either spiked or of such poor quality that it gave me the craps throughout the night. The only redeeming quality about this place is they finally tore down all the obsolete awards they had tastelessly plastered all over the windows for over a decade in an attempt live off the plaudits indefinitely. Due to this, I gave it this second chance, but it still fails to live up to its décor, let alone its (fabricated) reputation.

I don’t recomand this restaurant to anyone. The chicken was old also heated up in microwave. The waiter tuched my bread whit his hand in front of my eyes. For this money you can eat a good food in a dicent restaurant. Also there is so cold inside that you have to stay with your jacket on.
