A small but interesting menu including pastas, gazpacho and ragu. Cool environment too. The staff couldn't have been more polite and helpful. You are encouraged to buy a variety of items to share, which was great as we all got to taste all the delicious flavours and textures.

Magpie has a lovely relaxed feel with nice lighting. We ordered a selection of snack and first courses rather than going for any mains and every dish we had was exceptional! We tried the sourdough bread, beef tartare, olives, seasonal vegetables (the miso dip with the bread crumb type thing was so yummy - raw veg which we didn't realise when ordering but actually loved the dish and would get again), burrata and the pork rillettes which we ended up ordering a second of as they were so good. All the cocktails and wines were great and it was nice to be able to try each wine from the tap before choosing. Really great service! We didn't catch our waitress' name but thank you for making our evening really great! (her chosen charity is say no to racism, just to help identify)

I don’t know what it is about me and restaurants these days. It seems easier to say ‘everything was great thanks’ than say what I actually felt. The service was definitely excellent. And the fried chicken snacks were off the chart. No quibbles there. However, when you are paying £58/head for 1 snack, main, pud, 1 wine and 1 cocktail, I think you expect more. For example, the onglet steak. Sure, it was tasty - one of my fave cuts. But it was a bit dull - no sauce to liven it up. My wife had the salmon - she liked it, but too smokey and leaving her gasping for water. The orange cake was delish. Light, zingy and fresh. But the chocolate mousse was so dense... it wasn’t right. And as others have said, if you have to put a sign up saying ‘apologies the humble mess of our bathroom’, then why not do something about it? As I say, the fried chicken was delightful - we could have eaten that all night. And a wonky toilet seat and garish led strip light would be absolutely fine in a chicken shop. At chicken shop prices. But this is supposed to be a suave, paired back Mayfair restaurant. And with prices to match, we couldn’t help but expect more.

Friday night date night did not disappoint. Really delicious and clever meal. Sharing menus can always be a lottery, especially is the portions are small, but it was just right and tasty bites. We had haddock croquettes and fried chicken from the bites and red mullet from the starter. Lots of flavour. Salmon and the onglet for the main, washed down with a fab bottle of the Laughing Magpie Shiraz. Absolutely delicious. Comments about the service are a little unfair for me - yes some of the staff were a little reserved, but they know what they’re talking about and with tastes that good who cares?! Throughly recommend it

Came here with my husband a couple of weeks ago on a Friday evening. When you walk in there is no host to greet you and instead the bartender comes out from the bar, checks your reservation, takes your coats and takes you to your table. Bartender was v friendly though. The (blond) waitress (very casual dressed) came to take our drinks order, did not smile or show any warmth throughout the entire evening. I would say she had a big impact on the evening as she lacked hospitality skills...or at least she did with us although I saw her smiling and being friendly to the table next to us. Which made her lack of warmth to us even more obvious. Not sure why, as were are a young professional couple - perhaps not as cool looking as the table next to us, I asked her if there there were any white wines similar to Sauvignon and her answer was “no, not really”. Menu is small (not generally a bad thing) but I didn’t feel there was that much that appealed to me. Starters were nice (well I had two bar snacks as my starter) and we both ended up having steak for mains (for me because there was not much else that appealed) and it was a bad choice...very grisly and not enjoyable at all. I had to ask for salt and pepper as there were none on the tables (salt for my fries) and when someone else asked for the same, the waitress took the S&P from our table...clearly need more on hand! I went to the wc after dinner, and lighting was so poor when you walked in I couldn’t see which door was men’s and which ladies. Stumbled around to the cubicle which was so pokey had to squeeze in to shut door. And the cubicle had a vertical tube lighting in this tiny cubicle that was too bright so much so it was blinding! And absolutely no insulation as I could hear pans and noise from the kitchen...wonder if they could hear me! Felt like I was literally in the kitchen. As I was leaving the toilets, on the inside door there was a professionally written message saying something to the effect of “excuse our sloppy bathroom appearance” ..?!? WTF. If you think it’s sloppy clean it up! Though it was clean but very very dark. Plus men and women use that one area so didn’t feel safe for that reason as it was so dark. Don’t think I would return.

Visited here with 6 friends for an evening birthday meal just before Christmas. The restaurant was not too busy/noisy for us to be able to talk amongst ourselves. Our waitress was very friendly, professional and efficient with a lovely accent. To start we had a few nibbles.....warmed olives, nuts and bread served with this gorgeous tasting butter that I had to ask how was made (half burnt/half non burnt butter- simple but so tasty). The majority of the table ordered the mushroom risotto which was full of different flavours, textures- it felt like every mouthful was a new taste sensation! There is an open kitchen so it's lovely to see the chefs passionately cooking the food and I guess it's nice for them to see their food being enjoyed also! The prosecco was a delight too! I believe the menu is also seasonal so fresh ingredients! Would definitely visit again.

The whole process was seamless and Georgie was really helpful when arranaging the logistics of the evening. They even made us a 'signature cocktail' and were accomodating for different dietary requirements. Everyone raved about the food, the staff were friendly and efficient, the atmosphere was fab. Had a fantastic dinner at Magpie, absolutely everything was cooked to perfection and so delicious...the ribeye steak and artichoke starter with truffle were to die for, and so were the cocktails. Staff was lovely and we felt truly looked after. Even though it was a busy evening the place had a calm atmosphere, great playlist and cozy lighting. I can't wait to return here, would highly recommend!

I had one of the best cocktails ever at Magpie. The Depeche Mode was tender, sweet and absolutely delicious. It was by far the best thing I had at Magpie. Honestly I was left underwhelmed by the food. The croquette was quite interesting and the chicken was fine, but I remember thinking that the mayonnaise was the tastiest element of the snacks we tried, which I don't think is a great sign. The Sunday roast was a mixed bag, the beef was delicious but too cold and too fatty for my tastes. I also ordered a side of broccoli, and would have appreciated being told that my dish already came with broccoli. I ended up with so much broccoli that a fair amount went to waste! Honestly the meal was fine, but it wasn't really good enough and had we not had a 50% off voucher I would have felt really cheated. The staff were really very pleasant and that does deserve a mention!

We sat outside, weather amazing, Heddon street buzzing from the collection of restaurants and people passing by. Very lucky to sit outside. Initially a bit annoying with one couple and blowing all the smoke towards us, but they soon left, so no big deal (I have recently seen restaurants with no smoking even outside, maybe a good idea, there were children and buggies there as well). Great bloody mary. We had the chickory salad which was fantastic; full of nuts for those with allergies, but the nuts and salad combination with dressing was divine. The mackerel was ok, not as good as the salad. The risotto fantastic and the hake as well. The chocolate mousse has to be eaten together with the ice cream for maximum pleasure. Overall really good experience, young people working hard and providing a really nice overall experience, so I do recommend.

I am a great fan of Pidgin (run by the same team), and have been looking for a chance to visit Magpie. But what is the restaurant for? The menu was surprisingly unexciting and with the exception of the starters was mediocre and overpriced. A delicious Burrata with roast beetroot and smoked almonds was a great start but the pork failed dismally (strange and uninteresting vegetables), and the sticky toffee pudding was ordinary and there wasn't enough ice cream. WE had their cheapest bottle of red (Sicilian) which was served in a carafe and clearly came from a bulk vessel of some kind. At £36 this was gouging. Friendly service but I won't be going back and nor will my friends.
