Madre in Liverpool

Amazing mexican lunch. Very good enchiladas. Great atmosphere and good service. Ideal after a visit to the Beatles museum.

Walked here from the other side of Liverpool as the restaurant had come highly recommended. Checked online and they were serving until 9:15 however when we arrived at 8:45 we were told they had stopped serving food as it was a quiet night…..they did apologise and say the webpage should have been updated but wasn’t so we couldn’t get food. Not great service at all, literally ring before you go to check if they are still serving!

Dit is een Mexicaans restaurant in de hippe Albert Docks. Als je tot de een op de drie mensen hoort bij wie koriander naar zeep smaakt, dan moet je deze tent overslaan, want het zit vrijwel overal in. De kaart is redelijk bescheiden. Drie categorieën hoofdgerechtjes, snacks, taco's en mains. Waarschijnlijk ook een dessertkaart, maar die hebben we niet gehaald. Op de achterkant staat drank, waaronder wijnen per glas en fles. Als je afrekent, dan heb je opeens 'medium' glazen wijn besteld, maar die staan niet op de kaart en kosten wel 2 pond extra. Let daar goed op en weiger dat te betalen als je gewoon 'een glas wijn' hebt besteld. Wij bestelden een taco die aan de buitenkant met kaas gebakken was. Dat levert dan een bijna zwarte buitenkant krijgt (want de kaas verbrandt daarbij) en daardoor bremzout wordt. Het ergste is, dat de kaas daarbij verhard en niet meer te snijden is. Terug laten halen een nieuwe kunnen bestellen, maar doordat overal koriander op zit, alleen het taco met een gepaneerd stukje vis gekregen. Geen sausje of groenten, helemaal niks. Niet te vreten. De andere taco's die wel lekker ware, kostten 8 pond per stuk, drie happen en ze waren op. Oh, en de muziek staat er wel erg hard Plus nog gedoe over de rekening. De nachos zagen er wel aardig uit van een afstandje.

Not much selection on the menu, tasteless meat, nachos tasted stale, music that loud you had to shout for the person opposite to hear you felt more like a bar than a restaurant

Here on a Wednesday night with two friends for dinner, first time for us all. The place itself is very nice inside, with a relaxed 'cantina' look/vibe to it, and there's also a nice outdoor space too. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and service good throughout. Food-wise, there's some mains, but it's more like Mexican tapas with a selection of snacks/sides, and tacos. We ordered 7 of the 9 sides/snacks, and 3 plates of tacos to share. We also had churros, tea/coffee each to finish. The food, such as it was was all pretty tasty. That said, the portions were small, and seemed pretty overpriced for what you got. Partic the tacos, the beef and chicken ones were very thin with not much filling at their prices. Virtually just strands of meat and sauce. And having been to Mexica a few times, I'm famil with a good taco. Overall, it wasn't a bad night (seemingly), but coming home we couldn't help but feel a little short changed considering the bill, for the amount of food we received. That, and I say we shared everything, not quite. One of the dishes we had, crab tostada, only one friend and I shared, and only us two were unwell the next day. Maybe a coincidence, but on price, and portion size alone I'd be unlikely to return.

Madre is a lovely venue, and upon entering we all ordered a cocktail each, and they were very tasty (each one will set you back around 9-11pounds). We ordered a few things to share off the menu, which consists of mostly tapas-style dishes; each dish came separately which was frustrating considering there was around 30-40mins between the first and last dish - not to mention 2 servings of tacos were forgotten which we ended up cancelling. A few of the dishes were nice, such as the spicy chicken, the Mexican corn etc. However, there was some clear disappointments: the beef tacos we ordered were burnt on the outside, and we ordered a crab tostada which was really quite disgusting (if you’re going to serve crab cold this really should be highlighted on the menu, or at least mentioned upon ordering because honestly who is expecting that?). The staff were friendly but ultimately inattentive, we made countless attempts to get someone’s attention. As someone who has worked in the service industry, the importance of staff being alert cannot be stressed enough. To round it off, the food is a bit overpriced for what it is. Probably won’t be returning.

Went with friends. We were aware that we hadnt booked, so had to be away from our table, by a certain time.....BUT...OMG...rushed..was the big point. Overpriced drinks..£35 for a bottle of wine!!!! Food came slowly, in bits and drabs... Two starters, then all the others, then mains, whilst eating starters. Tasteless!!!! Then having plates being cleared before, we all had finished 😡 one of my pet hates. 20% service charged, personally non us thought the service was worth that....Overpriced crap!!!

First visit, big lover of Mexican food Inc making own tacos at home. Went for bottomless tacos and the first round felt like the tortillas had been left out, quite dry. Thankfully the 2nd, 3rd, 4th round was a lot better. Good selection of tacos. Nicely delivered with good timing and service. Ice cream sandwiches to finish were also v good.

Friendly staff and fast service. The food was below average, lacking in zing, freshness and heat. All in all, a rather tired, flavourless offering. Disappointing and by no means cheap.

I went to visit Liverpool for the weekend, I booked a table for 2 people, 3 days in advance for sat 11th Nov -7:15pm directly on your website, I did not received a confirmation email but I had an screenshot, on arrival your host did not even say hello, from the very first minute acting very rude, he seemed very busy having a chat with other customers... After he decided to talk to us he said the booking was not in the system, so I showed the screenshot, he replied literally "you do not have a booking, wait there for 26 minutes and have a drink" OMG not even would you like? Can I get the drinks menu for you? Please have  asit? zero customer service and even communication skills, his facial expression was so scary, he made us feel so embarrassed and uncomfortable in front of the rest of the customers. We could have waited, but after that treatment how?? We basically had to run away; HUNGRY, tired and very disappointed, the restaurant deco and vibes looked so nice and the food looked and smelled beautiful, it is a shame we could not even try, your host ruined the night, we paid 2 Uber journeys for absolutely nothing. 

Wow what fantastic food, but more than this the service was outstanding from start to finish in particular kieran on the front desk who was just gem. Visiting from Brighton for the football and we need a madre on the south coast !!

Efficient service. Starters were fine( pork belly and corn), but mains were terrible ( beef tacos, potato tacos- only veggie option available tonight). The food was so salty and there was nothing fresh, such as a bit of salad to cut through this. Portions were tiny, apart from the huge portion of nachos ( also over salty in patches). The toilets left much to be desired and hopefully aren't a reflection on standards of hygiene in the kitchen as the cleaning chart showed that they weren't checked regularly, and this was clear. Very disappointed.

Walked in, loved the decor and vibe! Initial service was very matter of fact… not the friendliest. Was shown to our table upstairs, it was lovely and warm! Relatively busy for a lunchtime and was greeted by our server, who wasn’t the happiest. Radiated a negative vibe from the offset. We ordered the Nachos to start and then a taco each, a light lunch. He almost seemed annoyed when he questioned us ordering more and we declined. Food was good. Nice. Nanchos were fully loaded and really tasty, a little bit spicy which we weren’t warned about. The tacos, the beef was nice and the vegetarian was dreadful. Tasted greasy, heavy and flavourless. I would go back in the summer for cocktails and nachos outside but definitely not for a meal.

Below part so called Mexican food. The restaurant was busy so was happy to accept a small table by the bar. The starter of guacamole was one of the blandest I have ever tasted, it did not help with the tortilla chips were strong in flavour and perhaps hiding the flavours, but some decent seasoning of salt and more lime would not have gone amiss. Main course was clams with potatoes in a broth. Problem was the broth hid the flavour of the clams. Had to ask for cutlery and tissues, in order to eat it. A big oversight was no side plate in to which the empty clam shells could be discarded, thus having to keep checking that I had not missed any clams to eat. Overall, overpriced and the food below average, was so disappointed as on paper it looked so promising.

Madre got us a table quickly without a reservation. Food excellent. Loved the margaritas. Loud music but able to hold a conversation. Fun to people watch. Recommend the enchiladas and tacos. Great shops nearby to explore before and after dinner. Very nice location.

Limited menu. Tacos and potatoes tasted bland, saving grace we got 2 free Tacos after waiting 30 mins. No salads on menu. I wouldn’t recommend.
