I have visited Madisons in Carnoustie several times now, the location for a coffee after a walk on the beach is great and to be fair the food is average, not a huge selection but ok for what it is, my complaint though is about the tips. I have left tips every time I go but have now discovered that management take all the tips and share it out between ALL the staff in every cafe they own and most likely management too, the girls who actually serve me get a pittance and a fraction of what I tipped and this I find is shocking. The person serving me is who I want to tip not the kitchen hand in another branch. So if you visit either tell the girl to put it in her pocket or don't tip ! Poor show management.

Madison's is the place to go too. Well so we have always thought before. I couldn't believe the prices have gone up so much since the last time we've been. Today I was in the mood for a baked tattie with tuna. £7.45! for a great tasting decent tattie with 3 piece of cucumber, 4 tiny slices of tomato skin with no actual tomato and watery lettuce. Hubby's egg roll was just a scraping of egg. Very poor, felt empty.

I have used this cafe since it opened & have never had a problem. On entering, especially at busy times, it can appear quite cramped with seating for around 50 people inside. In decent weather there are also a few tables outside. The tables inside are fairly close together and when busy can be a bit of a squeeze for customers & staff alike.Having eaten there previously I can highly recommended the hot food. The American breakfasts are my favourite. Scrambled egg, streaky bacon & pancakes with a side order of syrup if, like me, you want to go Full American & cover it all (Sounds weird until you try it).Fortunately today its was relatively quiet with only about 20 people so no problem getting a seat. I ordered a latte & a cake. The cake arrived pretty sharp but I was informed there had been a mix up with the coffee. The staff were very apologetic & despite the hold up their attitude made up for it. We're all human and can make mistakes. There only appeared to be 2 waiting staff but although they were constantly on the go their smile never once slipped. A credit to the establishment.

The building from outside is very nice but once inside it is cheap and squashed. The wooden tables and chairs are so close to each other I felt I was involved in the next table's conversation I heard every word! The feeling is pack them in, there are tables outside on nice days but you have to go inside to order! Maybe it would be nice to have a dedicated waitress for outside! The milkshake I ordered was disgusting, a glass of lukewarm milk with powder floating on top!. The prices were expensive for not great quality or service. I will not be back. I like comfy seats, a little privacy, good food, reasonable prices and staff who treat me as a valued customer - I am afraid I found none of these here at all!! It was chaos trying to pay too as people were coming in to order, a waitress was trying to get outside with food and people were coming in to sit down. One less table would open up more room to maneuver at the entrance but I think this cafe is all about packing people in I know that Madisons has the sports centre cafe too which is why a lot of my friends take flasks now as the inflated prices are horrendous there too!!

The real problem here is that the aisles are too small so the waitresses get under each other's feet which causes spills and nuisances for the customers.I visited for the first time today and although not a great experience I would go back.A relaxed atmosphere with a loud chatter from the customers also music in the background which caused a tendency for me and the Mrs to shout at each other. The waitress spilled my coffee because another waitress got in the way.The waitresses do try to please and I found them helpful and cheerful.Quite a mix of customers ranging from elderly middle class women through to not middle class couples and a good helping of chatty young women. Some older men.No young men around. The place attempts to be a bit of a bistro so offers bistro type grub like American breakfasts. More ordinary things like bacon and rolls are on offer as well. The grub is OK and amazingly my Mrs liked her pick what you want breakfast with no complaint from her!I had a bacon and egg roll which I ate but the bacon was over cooked to my tastes and the egg undercooked (shudder). I was asked which roll I wanted but while the waitresses was asking the Mrs how she wanted her egg I was busy sorting out my spilled coffee so missed that boat. All in all it is OK but do not look for much. A quick cuppa and a bite then off is what I suggest.

My daughter, feeling a bit peckish, had some nachos with cheese and sour cream, a sizeably nice portion. The waitress was lovely and went the extra mile for my gluten intolerant wife by actually bringing the huge slab of chocolate they use in their cakes to let her read the ingredients. We visit Montrose fairly often and if its late morning we prefer to eat at Madisons in the town's High Street. The main reason we do so is because of the great breakfast/brunch type dishes served there, in particular the American style pancakes with bacon, eggs, and of course maple syrup. The coffee too is excellent although recently I've 'converted' to a mug of hot chocolate with all the trimmings. It is a busy restaurant (always a good sign) serving a wide range of dishes including panninis, baked potatoes, wraps, sandwiches, and so on. Children are also well catered for.The staff are always pleasant, helpful and attentive, one of the main reasons for us eating there so often.

Went in to get a sandwich and a coffee to take out. Order taken quickly however I was kept standing at the till. There is a very narrow entrance into the cafe, two young mothers trying to collapse buggies to make space were apologetic - it was totally not their fault. Why the staff think lunchtime is the appropriate time to restock the shelves at the front is beyond me! The sandwich and coffee I thought were a reasonable price until I actually opened the sandwich container and the filling all fell out of the bread. There was no butter or spread to hold the filling, the meagre portion of grated mozzarella and the pepperoni slices barely covered the bread. Simply dreadful. The only reason it doesn't get the lowest rating is that the coffee was good.

Madisons is a lovely place to meet up with friends for a spot of lunch.Portions were filling and the staff were helpful and friendly.I have been a few times and would recommend it anytime.its lovely in the warmer weather being able to sit outside and relax with a lovely cup of coffee and usualy when I go I have the toasted wrap with chicken and cheese filling along side that you get crisps and salad.the staff are very efficient and didn't have to wait to long our order. When it is cold outside and your sitting in the interior is modern and very nice,It has a lovely clean look to the place with a good variety of foods to offer.

My wife and I enjoy this cafe for several reasons. Firstly, it has imaginative branding - they actually have pictures of New York on the walls which isn't something you encounter too often in eating establishments in Angus. Secondly, they have a very full, varied menu which features some tasty soups and amazing breakfasts which we drive many miles to enjoy. And thirdly, the staff are generally pretty friendly and efficient. I could also mention the sumptuous Mars cake at the well stocked cake counter but that's my guilty pleasure ! The cafe is always busy but there is plenty of seating so you can get a seat no problem. Some real thought has gone into the running of this place, it is not just your usual slightly run down cafe in a village with mediocre food ! I can not understand why this place has received some sub standard reviews. The only slight gripe I would have is that sometimes your starter and main meal get brought out at the same time (so I've ended up with the odd lukewarm tuna tatty) but given most of the staff are school girls I think you can cut them some slack and it doesn't happen very often as they learn fast and try hard - in fact, credit to the owner for helping the local Montrose economy by training up these girls and giving the punters such a pleasant place to socialise in without a background of noisy music which you get in some places I can think of. So go on folks, try the cooked breakfasts, you won't be sorry !

The restaurant temperature was a bit cool for my liking - had to leave to leave the coat on - but the soup was warm and the menu had a variety of options. One of my favorite characteristics was the a la carte breakfast option - you could order a REAL American breakfast without the blood pudding, baked beans and tomatoes.

we recently used Madisons to provide breakfast and lunches during our annual conference at NOV, Montrose. The food was delicious and our specific requests were catered for daily (right down to the exact fillings for our Bagels/panini's). We had different food each day and nothing was too much bother for Denis, the owner and Tracey, his charming sidekick, even dealing with a VERY last minute change to the lunch menu on one occasion, was dealt with professionally and our wishes were, not only catered for, but very efficiently. Denis and Tracey set up the food each day and made sure everyone knew what to do. It's great to be able to order 'bespoke' menu's when we are entertaining visitors and not having to just pick off of a set menu as most other places who provide outside catering insist upon. they also managed to accommodate our wishes and work with us to keep the cost within our budget per head, outstanding value for money. Thank you Denis, Tash and Tracey,

coffee is delicious, price is reasonable, staff are all friendly. visited a few times now, the only reason I have only gave it 3 stars is because the last time I was in I ordered the hot chocolate pancake sandwich which I expected would of been made with whipped fresh cream however it was the squirty stuff from a can which just didn't work. it went really watery and made the pancake soggy. I will be back though, i'll just know not to order that again

So glad we didn’t read some of these reviews before we went or might not have bothered. After a google search of places to eat “near me” the Speckled Hen came up. We loved it. Nice area, lovely views. Big open airy restaurant. Nothing fancy but clean and homely feel. Lovely selection of homemade sandwiches, cakes etc. My other half had bacon and egg roll which was delivered in a large roll with plenty filling while I had soup n sandwich. Salad and coleslaw with sandwich which was fresh and tasty. Delicious! The waitress also did the cooking so realised it may take longer to arrive than other places but was well worth the wait. Very relaxed and enjoyable. Service was lovely and other half saying he will be back with work colleagues!

Ordered a finger buffet for my 60th birthday as was having a few friends round and didn’t want to cook - Leona and her staff certainly didn’t disappoint. The food supplied was amazing - well presented, tasty and very reasonably priced. Would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a fuss free home buffet and will definitely be using them again. Thanks again Leona 🥰

Very nice food, staff were very helpful and couldn't do enough to help us. They even brought us a birthday cake out for us (one we had brought to the pub) then we went into another part of the building and played bingo for the rest of the evening. Brilliant
