Another more recent review. I know the new owners have been trying to find their feet since taking over with various chefs and menus. Been here a couple of times now since the newer menu. Its all been good food. The porty burger is excellent. Very reasonable prices compared to rest of town these days. Brucie has been back for a while now.Shame it was quiet. Id say it's well worth a try if you haven't been for ages.

Been all over the world work wise and tbh that was the best steak I’ve had. Fillet for me and ribeye for my wife. Cooked to perfection. Cheers David and Sean

Popped in fir a barlunch, service was OK we selected 1/2 portions which was ample. Was surprised it wasn't busy.

Was in portcullis for a family birthday on 4th may was rudely told to leave and sit outside with my hearing dog totally embarrassed me in front of family and friends will never be back will never recommend this place to anyone

Just in to the beer garden for a couple of pints. Table Service, payment by card machine.... no hassles whatsoever. Fantastic service at a great pub. Update! Been in for a meal for the first time with the newest team in charge... EXCELLENT!!!

Had a meal with my mum tonight. I took 45 mins for our meal to come out, steak pie and chips. The chips were luke warm, steak was chewy and the pie pastry was paper thin and soggy. Veg had been over cooked and had burnt crispy things on it. Won't ever go back

Service is fantastic,. Food was not great when we visited. Steak pie's gravey was like water the veg was lovely but was undercooked for some of us. Great place to have a drink though and the people are great, can't help enough

Me and family went there for a meal waited 1hr 30 mins then they came with 4 meal out of 6 then another ten mins before the other 2 came ,they did say there short staffed but surely they could've got a temp in

We were there for tea the other night, 20minutes for the staff to take our orders another 1 and a half hours to get our meals in the meantime two couples cancelled there orders and left another couple commented they didn't enjoy there meal and wouldn't be back alas I would agree with them £28.50 for surf &turf £23,50 for sizzler (not big portions chips were soggy) we won't be back and wouldn't recommend judging on the experience we had

Went with family for Christmas Dinner. 3 course meal at £60 per head . Very bland .vegetables were hard .wasn't real Turkey ie cut from the Turkey more likely processed . No atmosphere. Certainly wasn't worth the money.

Very friendly staff, delicious meals and fast service. My favourite place to eat out.

Definitely one of the better pubs in Arbroath. Good food for lunch and dinner too. Well priced.

Had a lovely meal and kids loved seeing Santa , but was advertised as kids eat for a £ with every paying adult, we were charged for kids ,and msg to query this ,sent apologies,but on sending receipt and promise of a refund have been ignored

Went to the portcullis for Sunday evening meal with Wife & child. Went through front door to be hit with the worst smell ever. Sewage smell possibly from the toilets. Went through to the restaurant to be greeted by the pleasant staff. We were seated and had good interaction with them. Took are order and 20mins later we received are food on first impressions looked good. Myself and wife ordered the same main meal lasagne and once we started to eat the meal it was apparent that there was very little meat if actually any in the pot. seemed to be a bowl of cheese and pasta sheets. I was very disappointed with this place. The previous experience was alot better. The front staff were on point.

First time here today and definitely go back. Food hot and good portion sizes.. Friendly barman to boot.

Great food served by friendly and efficient staff. Worked out at a reasonable cost of £25 per person for 3 generous size courses, accompanied by soft drinks. I can personally recommend the steak pie as being the best steak pie I’ve tasted in years! The steak was cooked to perfection 😋 Will definitely be returning for more in the near future… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

its been a while since we visited the portcullis ,and we were not disappointed ,today is the 30 dec 2021 we were there for a bar lunch . the service was very good ,food,well we could not fault 'good servings' and hot .if back in Arbroath and needing fed ,would go back .

Great function room,staff friendly, only problem was drink was abit pricey.

Food was really good, but large portions, so didn't get chance to sample desserts. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The new layout is nice and bright.

Was here today for a catch up lunch with my friend and had my 2 year old little boy with me too. He very quickly got bored with our chat and started playing up. So the lovely people working stepped into help. The lady asked if she could take him for a wee walk round the garden, off he went instantly on his little adventure to the garden and to explore round the pub, then the gentleman took him to meet their lovely dog where he got to feed him biscuits. My little boy absolutely loved it and I got to eat my lunch hot. Now this is what I call amazing!!! I can not thank them enough and I will sure be back... the food was lovely too!

Good visit, haven't been there for a while, great bar staff fast service

First time back since lockdowns, menu stated fresh, homemade, but when it arrived I was shocked, frozen chips, frozen veg, 6 pieces of steak under massive piece of pastry, watery gravey. I will not be going back to this establishment as it looked and felt mediocre at best. No atmosphere, no decor. I would not recommend this establishment, better off going to McDonald's where you'd actually get value for your money.

Used to love coming here for a meal , food has definitely gone downhill since my last visit before lockdown , menu was just ridiculous but ok if you wanted a burger , steak pie has always been my favourite but even that wasn’t that good , hot choc fudge cake was certainly not hot , don’t think we will be back

We were staying in the area on holiday and booked a table here as they said reservations were needed although I'm unsure why as the place was empty with only ourselves eating which I thought odd but after having a meal there I know why. The menu was called their spring menu which appears a little late as we are in July. The choice was abysmal and most of us settled for something we did not want. The surroundings were cold and uninviting and I felt like we were sitting in an aircraft hanger as it was so empty. Will not be returning.

We went here for a meal, the service was atrocious, the food came out with hair in it, and the smell of bo of the owner was un called for, the manager had major attitude and the owner was just as bad. Wouldn’t set foot in the place again!

The food is comfort food, I always loved it before. Now I'm vegetarian, the only thing on the entire menu to eat was macaroni cheese. No vegan options either. The staff are accommodating and it's great for families. Unfortunately as the restaurants not very versatile, I won't be back.

What a fantastic meal! We booked a table for 13 (mix of adult as and kids). We were given a warm welcome. Food was delicious 😋. Not one complaint. Fresh and all appeared to be made from scratch. Steak pie was outstanding, burgers massive, the carvery was the best we’ve ever had and surf and turf cooked to perfection! As for the desserts well the mini sundaes were bigger than expected, chocolate fudge cake amazing and the aero cheesecake was light and so tasty. The chefs must have had their work cut out when we walked in but they done themselves proud. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic food and good size portions friendly atmosphere

I hate giving bad reviews to restaurants incase I've just caught it on a bad evening but I'll make an exception here. It should be difficult to make totally bland, tasteless, mildly warm steak pie with burned to a crisp chips accompanied by soggy veg, especially after taking nearly an hour from ordering to bringing it to the table.. but credit where it's due, they managed to do that. The hint was there when the starter of deep fried mushrooms had the consistency of championship winning chestnuts. My partner actually challenged me to try one of the onion rings served with her meal but it had me beat. Hey ho. Live and learn. We're hardly "regulars" but over the years I've probably ordered a dozen of the "Porty Combo" amazing mixed grill. They don't serve that now. Had I known that before I probably wouldn't have gone. Maybe it was just a bad evening but it was memorably bad enough to take it off the list of places to go.

We held an impromptu engagement celebration at the portcullis on the 10 October, and were so happy with the welcome, service, food and atmosphere:) Jamie and Lianne went out of there way to ensure we had an amazing afternoon and evening, I cannot thank them enough. The food was delicious and the setting, simply stunning. Can’t wait to come again.

Was here for the reception after my gran's funeral. Can't recommend them highly enough. Food was fantastic and the staff attentive.

Obviously new owners, food has deteriorated significantly, overpriced and poor quality.

No steak left by 6pm and lasagne about 6" by 4" and not even 1cm deep also rubbery. Been a regular in porty since 90's and that is the worst I have ever been served.

Was at the portcullis for the first time carvery. It was very good only down side was it could of been a bit warmer. So that why I gave 4 stars if warmer would of been 5+ stars

As a family we always enjoy going to the Porti, both in the dining room for meals and the function room for family parties. The food is always lovely, never any complaints just smiley faces and happy tummies all round. The menu offers a great choice of "home cooked" food, but my husband and I always look forward to a sizzling steak, and the cheesecakes and sticky toffee pudding are to die for. All the staff are extremely friendly and very approachable.

Was there playing darts tonight was a great night and very nice food thanks for a great night .

Went on Sunday for a meal very limited menu as they had a Carvery very disappointing as we expected a full menu. The restaurant was to hot very uncomfortable for eating. The Carvery meats were nice Gammon, turkey and silverside. The Macaroni was oily. We had puddings they were better although the custard was cold. One of our party found a hair in their food she told the young waitress who said sorry but no apology from management. Very dated needs a total refurb. Used to be great not so sure now, needs to improve.

The menu was uninspiring but I eventually spotted 'Caesar Salad'. Not today! I picked 'Haddock' instead. It was a long time coming as no 'main course' was served until those in our group who had chosen soup, had eaten and had their dishes removed. I have had much better fish elsewhere. The accompanying vegetables were soft. I don't happen to eat chips. However my cider was cold and delicious!
