Called in for a light lunch on a day out to Castle Douglas, had our dogs with us so looked for a dog friendly place. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and immediately offered our dogs a bowl of water as it was a warm day. The food was good cafe food, no frills but quick, tasty and well cooked. The place is very pleasant inside, well decorated (loved the mad hatter drawings and the dog bags) and surprisingly spacious and comfortable. If we are ever in that part of the world again we will definitely return.

Friendly welcome and excellent food. I come every year. I noticed last year that baked beans had become part of the Scottish breakfast. Today I felt I got far too many beans, but you do get toast with it so you can have beans on toast as well as bacon, egg, sausage and tattie scone!

Came here whilst on holiday for a week in September. The staff were really friendly and the place was spotless! All seats and tables were cleaned straight after someone left their table. It was a lovely place to stop with our dog for a coffee. The homemade soup was delicious and very filling. My partner also said the breakfast was very tasty and the portions were a good size

Went in for a quick bite. Food was really nice and excellent value for money. Service was also very quick and efficient. It was also really busy and had a nice atmosphere. Have to agree with previous review though that decor was a bit odd for the name of the cafe and the toilets could have been cleaner. Nice enough though.

Visited here for first time, food was good and service was quick. It was cheaper than other cafes around too.Although the decor is a bit tacky! Not sure why they call it mad hatters? Parked outside got out of car and approached the door to have it shut in our faces and the lights turned off. The lady just glared at us. It was 3/4 of an hour before the closing time stages. All the lady had to do was say sorry closing early and that would have been acceptable but the hard faced clear off face was extremely bad mannered. I have eaten here before but never again and will advise family and friends to avoid.

This is a small pet friendly cafe on the main street in Castle Douglas, it has a few tables and chairs in the entrance, comfy seating in the middle. If you looked in you would think it was full but go in and check, there is more hidden seating at the back. The food is reasonably charged, basic menu, but all food prepared to a high standard. The cafe staff a all very friendly, nothing was too much trouble for them.I would recommend you pop in, if your ever in Castle Douglas. The only negative and it is slight, the cafe is called Mad Hatters and yes you can see bits of things that relate to the Alice in Wonderland theme, then it is over looked by the numerous shopping bags with pictures of dogs on them. I am a dog owner and if I wanted to buy cards or bags with dog pictures on them, I would purchase them If they were in one place on a stand near the paying counter and not splattered all over the shop! It’s a shame really because the cafe could be made to look much better in the theme the name suggests!

Lovely cafe which sells a cracking Scottish breckfast . Coffee is nice too. Anywhere that allows dogs will always get our custom it's such a great thing to do. Small coffee shop at front then nice little sitting area with bout 5 tables and comfy chairs, then another dining area I think this is mainly for children as toys and other items for kids situated there, and mostly families eating in that section. Coffee ws lovely I had a scone which though edible wasnt the best i have tasted but ok and served with a smile. Gluten free options were 4 bought in tray bakes which were nothing exciting but fine. The one thing that really let it down was they had no accessible toilets for disabled customers. I use a rollator walking frame and had difficulty getting into the ladies so I dont think anyone in a wheelchair could in there. The toilets also leave a lot to be desired, the floor between the 2 cubicles was absolutely filthy and needs to be addressed also the ceiling fan was very dirty too. Such a shame as the staff were very nice and friendly and the food was not expensive. Jut felt let thmselves down with the hygiene part.

Called in on a rainy afternoon with our 3 dogs in tow. Slightly luke-warm reception from the staff,we wondered if we'd made a mistake trying this cafe. However we took a table near the back of the cafe as there were a couple of other diners with dogs+ a bit of wooffing ensued. The place is much bigger+ brighter than it looks from outside.Comfy tub chairs+ an area for children at the back. A comprehensive menu but we just fancied a sweet treat. I had fruit crumble+ custard + a pot of tea and hubby had sticky toffee pud+ ice cream and an orange juice. Very generous portions! The crumble was just the right sweetness+came with a proper jug of custard. The sticky toffee came with 2x scoops of ice cream. After we'd ordered, various staff came over to fuss the dogs+ give them treats which was kind. There's also a large selection of cloth shopping bags for sale on the walls featuring different breeds of dog.Was tempted to buy a whippet one. £7.50 each. Our bill came to £8.40 for our food+ drinks so definitely good value. Will call here again on future holidays

Called into this cafe for coffee while on a short break. Experienced an extremely rude middle-aged waitress who was a perfect example to our children of how not to act or treat others. Shaking your head and rolling your eyes at customers when they are trying to clarify how they wish their coffee to be served then stomping off and telling one of the young waitresses to “serve these people” is really not endearing or polite! Somebody needs to go and learn a few manners particularly in front of children and the younger members of staff who worked there. Needless to say we left and had pleasant service at the Marchbank bakery further up the street.

We stopped here for lunch on Saturday , we had left the lake district early on the way to Port Patrick . So we were too hungry to look around for a cafe !! We parked just down from Mad Hatters so called in and nabbed a window seat for 2 .My eternal diet meant just coffee with a slice of brown toast ( with jam )! for me . But my partner opted for coronation chicken jacket potato .this was accompanied by a very fresh salad which included nachos with chilli jam , pasta , etc v . It looked delicious and my greedy partner must have thought it tasted the same because he polished the lot off leaving me one piece of pasta !! very good value for money , excellent fragrant hot coffee . Good products cooked and served to satisfy any traveller . Plus a lovely careful young man who served us . Thankyou so much, a very good start to our wkend trip .

We popped in here while on a short break in the area and were very pleasantly surprised. It's a traditional little eatery with a good menu that covers everything from soup and snacks to more filling offerings and judging by what I saw on other tables, it all looks home made. Our order was taken by a very pleasant waitress and our beverages were on the table in minutes, promptly followed by our food, which was no mean feat as the place was busy. My brunch was a smaller version of a full Scottish breakfast and my wife had the same but with veggie sausages and we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals. A pot of tea for two with toast and two satisfying well cooked fry ups for around £11 is great value in my book. If you're ever in Castle Douglas and need a bite to eat, you won't go far wrong in here.

Lovely little place. We just fancied a drink but decided on a scone and cake too it was lovely. All staff were really nice and was very clean. The menu was good and would definitely return. Likes how it wasn't just a regular cafe you could have anything from just s light snack to full main course and pudding. Plenty of space and move seating areas.

Popped in for our lunch on a visit to Castle Douglas, been here in past and to me it's a nice little cafe. The staff are very friendly, the foods good and reasonable priced. I enjoyed my lunch and would go back again anytime!

Found this café on google as we were looking for a dog friendly place to eat. We received a friendly welcome from the staff who quickly brought a bowl of water for our dog!We had the homemade mushroom soup which was so tasty and a panini - I had bacon/cheese and tomato - all nice ingredients. Hubby had haggis and cheese which he loved. This is a true, hearty Scottish café - large portions, good value and true friendly welcome. Brilliant for dog owners.

been calling to madhatter's now for 15 years it's dog friendly & the staff always bring a dish of water for her & sometimes a saugage.the food is great value ,its clean and tidy inside .you can tell when your getting good food when a cafe is full all the time like madhatter's.yes it may need a bit of paint on the out side but its inside that counts.

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.

A super bed and breakfast with a lovely vegan curry and home baked ecclefechan tart in the bar which had an open fire. Steve and Mary looked after us like a mum and a big brother. Could not do enough for us including a very welcome lift to and from hoddom Bridge as we were walking the annandale way. And a packed lunch to order. Will recommend to all, especially walkers.

We ate here and finished our meal, the waitress cleared away and we decided we'd have another round of drinks before leaving. We waited 5, 10 minutes and the waitress never came back. I went in search of someone but couldn't find our waitress. I didn't like to open the doors to the kitchen. We waited another 5 minutes and my wife said 'this is ridiculous' and went off in pursuit. She found our waitress in the bar (was she watching TV, did she fancy the barman?) and asked if we could get some service. The waitress said 'the restaurant is closed', as if we were being unreasonable in expecting to be served a round of drinks. No, the restaurant isn't closed if you've still got people sitting at a table you're serving and you haven't asked them if they want a dessert or offered them the bill but simply buggered off. So we said OK, can we just pay the bill. Which we did, and obviously didn't leave tip. We won't be going back.

A beautiful grand building in a wonderful setting. It was very quiet but the service and food were excellent. Not cheap but definitely worth it for a special occasion.
