Lovely little town, busy as it was a Saturday, called into this tea room with the family as they had empty seats , ( now I know why!) Various meals were ordered, the food was very mediocre, I left half of my cheese of toast, very soggy, I suspect the bread was not toasted prior to adding the topping. However the real issue was the chicken burgers which were served up raw on the inside. Obviously deep fried from frozen, which was confirmed by the serving staff upon enquiry. See the photographs below……..When we asked to speak with the management on this issue , no one was available! Since then my partner has tried to contact the owner, telephone number supplied by the on-site staff several times to no avail. The issue has been reported to the Durham CC Environmental Health Department for them to take this issue up with the management. We had a two year old eating chicken with us I dread to think of the outcome should she had eaten any of this chicken. Not , I stress NOT a place to go to if you do not want to risk Salmonella ! The on-site staff could not confirm if the cooking staff had received any food hygiene training. Please note this cafe is displaying a five star food rating on the door…..

Came here with family for tea and cakes. A lovely little place, nice art on the wall. Welcoming and friendly staff. Lots of choice on menu. The cakes ordered were very tasty and no one had any complaints. Would go again. Only negative, was that the place was quite small and so we could not all sit together (there were 5 of us) so we had to sit separately which was not ideal.

As I’m a big fan of Alice in Wonderland I dined at this wonderfully quirky cafe with my two vagabond companions Secret Dave & Naughty Neil. Whom ordered treacle tart & sausage, egg & chips whilst I ordered a bacon bun accompanied by a refreshing pot of tea without the traditional dormouse inside. Our tea & meals arrived reassuringly promptly & my bacon bun was delicious but my friend found his chips slightly undercooked but said everything else was fine. However the proprietor also kindly & proudly explained why he chose the unusual name & style of his cafe & as we vagabond loonies evidently fit right in we shall certainly consider dining at this establishment between coffee time & too late during our next visit to Bernard Castle.

Really can't see what all the moaning's about, been coming here for years and have never had anything wrong with any of my orders yet? The food - drinks - ice-creams, everything always is spot on! The reason why they have plastic covers over the tables is to protect them for when they have kids' craft parties to minimize the mess all over the place. I suggest the scones, or even the ice-creams - delicious! My dad always has the omelette here and he loves it. Washed down with one of their gorgeous cappuccinos. He has this habit, albeit strange, of dipping his ice-cream into it to melt it. All the best to everyone at the Mad Hatters for 2023. Keep up the good work. See you in the New Year.

However, it took 10 minutes before anyone approached us for our order and another 10 minutes before we received it.Keen to quench our thirst at this point, the cappuccino was OK but the tea was absolutely disgusting- no taste or colour. Drinks order was taken quickly - Mocha for me, peppermint tea for my wife (though I was somewhat bemused that the waitress asked if she wanted milk in that - ew! :) ).I had the Yorkshire Rarebit, and my wife had the chicken burger. Lovely little cafe that appealed to us when we drove past. Nice welcome form chef and sat quickly.Ordered as direction set by staff in line with regulations however we were missing an item off the order. I asked if we could have said item and after the rest of the family had near enough finished, the ice cream turned up. The lady stated we would need to pay for the item as it had not gone through on the order and stated that my husband and daughter had not ordered it. Did not think her manner was very professional, borderline rude! I checked our bill against the menu to find out that we had in fact already paid and therefore had now paid twice. Checked and double checked before telling her to which her reply again was condescending and challenging.I simply stated that I understood that she may not of written it down however we had been charged for an extra item. Left feeling disappointed. Will not be recommending to anyone on the basis of her attitude. Very nice cakes not so nice staff member.

5 of us tried to go for lunch, after one member of staff seated us at the table the manager stormed across and rudely announced we couldn’t sit together because of Covid regulations, none of the staff wore face coverings or gloves, didn’t distance and there was no hand sanitizer on offer, we didn’t appreciate being aggressively embarrassed in front of the other patrons when simple conversation would’ve sufficed. It seems counter intuitive to lecture customers on regulations that the staff themselves won’t follow, including said manager entering our ‘bubble’ to complain about 2 metre distances. Mad Hatter is rather fitting. Suffice to say we won’t be returning.

Looked so lovely from the outside but unfortunately I won’t be coming back. Plastic table covers, place stank of chips and cafe was full of haze from the fryer. Chefs came out and clearly noticed this and turned the extractor fans on but these were really loud. As other reviews have mentioned, lots of flies flying around. Also as other reviews have said, the pot of tea was served with strange small cups, not tea cups, more like a large expresso cup. When I left I noticed the charity shop a few doors down had some lovely tea cups and saucers in the window, I would advise the owner to get some of these, far more in keeping with the Alice in Wonderland theme. Also I really felt that having the radio on playing rap music wasn’t really what I want when I sit in a quaint cafe. Such a shame, so much effort has been put into making the place look pretty but it failed to live up to expectations in a number of ways. Sadly I wouldn’t come back.

Visited here on a Sunday afternoon, called in because it looked like an interesting place. Sat down at a table that hadn't yet been cleared (not a problem, we even stacked up the crockery). The lady eventually came and cleared the table and told us she'd be back to take our order. We watched while orders were taken from people who arrived after us, again not a massive problem, it's hard to know in which order people arrive. But after another 15 minutes we simply got up and left. I didn't feel inclined to remind the lady we were there, after all she had already spoken to us. So sadly I can't review the food, the drinks or the service as we simply didn't recieved any of them. Thankfully we wandered further up the street and had a lovely cuppa and cake at a different establishment.

We had business to do in Barnard Castle today so decided to get there early and have breakfast in the town, Mad Hatters was the first cafe we passed so called in on spec. Pleasant enough welcome but the cafe was very cold. We ordered eggs on toast and tea for two. The tea pot was really small, suffice for one person really but we did get a refill of hot water. After a wait our food arrived, we couldn't tell if the eggs had been poached or fried ! greasy bases but watery and uncooked on the top. The toast was cold so the very hard butter couldn't even melt on the warmth of it. As we were in a rush we didn't have time to send the breakfasts back and have to wait again so just had to scrape the raw bits off and make the best of it. All this was done while listening to a woman in the cafe who seemed to be looking after a baby~not sure if she works there or not~ with a very loud voice telling the people on a nearby table and the staff all her family issues. Boy can she talk.. In a town where there are a lot of cafes you need to up your game.

Nice cafe we had sandwiches cake and a pot of tea only bug bear was the 40 minute wait. Tea was served quickly but cold by the time our sandwiches arrived. I'm sure I could of had a fresh pot but I can only drink so much tea

We enjoyed visiting here, partly to use their outside toilet and then to return for hot chocolates and cake. The staff offered good service and the children helping out were a credit to them.

On first entering all seemed ok, the lad serving on seemed pleasant. Then, we sat for a good ten minutes before he approached us to take out order, not such a problem we are on our hols so pretty chilled. Order taken and then we sat and sat, to be fair it was getting busy and he had no help, but he stood at the counter oblivious to his customers, it was table service and everyone had to approach him to get served. We sat and sat, we only ordered two drinks and a scone. The couple who came in a good ten mins after us made their order and they sat, eventually he made two drinks and the anticipation as he walked towards us our drinks were on their way, but he slumped past us as we saw the drinks being placed on the table of the couple who came in after us. So we politely got up walked to the door and my hubby asked him to cancel our order, no great response, so my hubby explained that we had waited long enough and the couple got served before us, his response, “really” aaagh, so unconcerned, he needs to learn to speed up and brush up on good manners. Never again. We walked further down the street went. Into another tearoom, different again, good food, brill service and much cheaper.

Stopped briefly in Barnard Castle and came across this quirky little tea room with lots of things regarding the mad hatters tea party and Alice in Wonderland to look at. Great service with a smile and very helpful. Gluten free cake was simply delicious and also recommended is lemon and elderflower cake. Coffee came in a large cup and again was faultless. Would definitely go again, if in the area.

Went there for food but after seeing the place decided to stick with coffee. The waiter serving me, had his under pants visible. So off putting... The place looked dated and odd. The concept of mad hatter was poorly executed.

Needed a place to escape from the cold and stumbled upon this little cafe. Me and the Mrs got a latte each and a slice of cake each as well and it was all really nice. We came during a really quiet time so it was blissful and they have a nice selection of cakes if you love to indulge. Overall it was a really pleasant experience.

Got this for 7.70 and it might be the worst fish and chips I’ve had, barely any fish at all with burnt batter on the outside

Bliddy useless on way back now got the order completely wrong inside the bag even though it's right on the sticker. Check your order before you leave as someone there can't read n just chuck anything in
