As good as you could expect. Well, Wick is only a few miles from the literal end of the road so temper your expectations for the availability of international hotel chains. To fill the gap thankfully there are a plethora of indie B&Bs and, of course, Hotels like Mackays to choose from. Standards have vastly increased in indie hotels in Scotland over the past two decades. I'm making a generalisation here (so not talking about Mackays) but there was a time in the past when guests in Scotland indie hotels were eyed as unwelcome intruders by hotel patrons, who endured 'service' through gritted teeth to get much needed coin. On top of this in the dark distant past, indie hotels had threadbare, squeaky rooms with rickety steel beds furnished by hopelessly flimsy 70s and 80s cheap furniture. These rooms were notoriously cold where a trip to the bathroom from bed necessitated much prayer and taking a shower was only for those with military training in arctic survival. Patrons got away with this level of service because there simply weren't online reviews warning guests off from the terror. I guess I'm telling you about the dank past to highlight the progress of the present, and to make the point that Mackays was a delightful stay. We journeyed from cold snow and ice outside, to a warm and inviting environment inside. I could tell immediately that the staff cared; they were interested in our journey and made sure that we were warm, well fed and watered - invigorated - for the rest of it. So there you have it. Mackays is a great indie hotel and next time I'm near the end of the road I'll be staying there again.

Stopped by for dinner whilst doing the NC500. Even in the off-season it was advisable to book a table. Friendly service, great food. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to eat out in Wick.

Spent a weekend in Wick. After wondering around on Saturday evening after a very long and eventful train journey, I stumbled across this place. Having no reservation for dinner, I chanced it and walked in. Ritesh on reception was very pleasant and said it was no problem, although they were quite busy. Ordered food… it arrived very quickly, and wow it was good. Three courses later and the best part of a bottle of Rioja later I was completely satisfied. The price was not cheap, but outstanding for the quality of the food and service. Returned again the following evening, again without a reservation, the welcome was warm, and the food excellent. This is certainly a little gem in Wick, well worth a visit.

This hotel has the old school charm, in the best way possible. After so many stays in likes of Hiltons & Hyatts, it's so refreshing to be in a hotel that not just pays lip service to guest service, but actually means it. Hotel is next to River Wick in a very good location, the staff are top notch & attentive, room was very clean (appreciate the complimentary tipple) & spacious. The gulls on river Wick made it their mission to spoil my sleep with their racket but the soothing sounds of river put me to sleep. The breakfast was very good, the staff on service were extraordinary. Thank you for making our trip so memorable.

Can't comment on the rooms. Called in for Sunday lunch, staff were lovely and friendly, I meant to ask your names so I could mention you. The Sunday lunch was perfect! Beef succulent and Yorkshire puddings lovely and fresh tasting. Gravy very tasty. I'm so happy that the vegetables were varied, carrots, turnips, green beans and snap peas, they were fresh and some slightly roasted instead of just boiled boring veg you usually get these days! I'm so happy you realise veg is as important as everything else. I had room for a pudding so I had waffles with caramelised banana, caramel and ice cream, massive portion and enough for two really but I didn't share, it was sooooo lovely! Thank you and highly recommend! An extra star ⭐️

Thought I was in for a disaster here when my train up to Wick was cancelled and I had to get the last one (11pm arrival). But, a quick call and I was assured all would be fine. Indeed, I had a warm welcome when I eventually made it after a long journey. The room was clean and well-appointed. I even had the bonus of being in room 9 which is technically on the famously-short Ebenzer Place. Breakfast was excellent. The staff were very friendly and the selection and food quality were great. Wick isn't exactly a bustling metropolis so hotel choices are fairly slim, but Mackays will provide everything you could possibly be after.

Called in for a meal and to be fair the food was lovely and our waiter was very good, but having a bad day so it did feel a bit like a scene from Fawlty Towers. very good food at a reasonable price

Central location. Street parking. Bistro Bar restaurant entered from shortest street in the world. Bistro Bar is modern and busy and associated dining room is more traditional and spacous. Very helpful friendly staff and excellent food using local produce. Best meal yet in November 2023. Superb! New kitchen team have cracked it. Still great February 2024.

We only ate here, and it was delicious. The staff were very chatty and efficient. They could afford to give a few more peas, not sure why one of your 5 a day are served in the tiniest of ramekins (about 16 peas) 😀

At the risk of sounding pompous,, my family and I have spent thousands upon thousands in this restaurant over the years. We've been going for over 25+ years. Ordered a takeaway tonight and got my usual, Tandoori king prawn for the princely sum of £22.40. What does one get for that? 3 prawns. Yes, THREE prawns. T-H-R-E-E. It used to be 10-12. The other food was just alright. Not bad at all but not what we used to expect under the previous owner. Very oily. It's very disappointing to spend this much at a restaurant we have so many good memories of.
