Busy Saturday night created great atmosphere. Staff friendly welcoming built great rapport with all at the table. Food of highest quality and great value.

Have previously enjoyed many meals here, but they must have had a staff shuffle. Sadly, when calling to book (6 adults, 2 children) just had to deal with an unnecessarily rude man for no apparent reason... I phoned to make it clear that yes it would be a reservation for 8, but this would be 6 adults and 2 children (in case this helped where they'd like to seat us, rather than an online booking where I can't make this clear). From the off set it was like my calling was SUCH an inconvenience, and then for truly no reason he tells me "You have to put 8 or we'll lay a table for 6 and you'll arrive and kick up a fuss" ... right ok, I never questioned whether to put 6 or 8 nor implied I was the 'fuss making' type lol. So I replied that was exactly why I was calling to ensure the restaurant knew the full situation and try to make things easier. I asked if he was alright as he seemed annoyed and he replied "yeah its just you've called us in the middle of lunch service so". Obviously I said ok not to worry, and subsequently will not be going as its a huge red flag for the service I'm worried we'd receive on the day. What a strange and certainly not needed interaction. If you are too busy to take a call politely, don't answer it - seems obvious to me! *Edit after reply* - A phone call IS an experience of the restaurant. The service/attitude I receive while booking is a good indicator of the service I'll receive from the same people when coming in. You don't need to 'establish what happened' as I've laid it out very clearly. Disappointing response and therefore I won't be removing the review.

Excellent food - would have given 5 Stars but was sharing 2 starters & only 3 small pieces of bread came out for the pate so asked for another piece & was shocked to see £2 added on bill which soured the experience a little. Mentioned to manager. Shepherd Pie excellent.

We had celebrated a belated valentine here with perfect choice. Wednesday have Jazz with piano was very relaxing. Food was very fresh and quality. If you are fish people very recommend,fish very fresh. Really impressed. Staff was very nice and friendly. Everything smooth as expected and very happy in the romantic time.

Really pleasantly surprised by this restaurant! Chicken schnitzel was really juicy - all the plates were good. It is like going back in time in terms of decor and service, in a good way! The only criticism is that it was super quiet which does affect the ambience but otherwise will be happy to go back.

The ambience was lively but not noisy. The service was excellent, with attentive and friendly staff. The food was to a very high standard. A very positive dining experience.

This restaurant is OK, but considering its prices, it is expensive for what is being served. The menu was unremarkable and around six different mains no one said "wow". Vegetables and sides are offered as an addition to the set menus.

Lussmans recently hosted my sister's baby shower and the service was exceptional! They helped me set up (I wasn't expecting this), the food was excellent and we weren't rushed at all. Highly recommend.

I used to be a regular at the St Albans branch and returned recently for a family dinner. The food hit the standard I have always expected with good honest grub and friendly service. However, the main courses (times four) were served on stone cold plates, which is unacceptable when paying £25 plus per dish. If the objective of fine dining is to savour the food and enjoy convivial conversation, then all these aspirations are kicked into touch when something so basic is missed. Is it also too much to ask that the waiting staff, after taking the order, know what everyone is eating, rather then turning up with the food and then asking who is having the duck, fish, streak etc...?

Celebrated my mum's 90th birthday here, by throwing a surprise party. They were incredibly accomodating and let mum choose her food on the day, they let us put up some decorations, and even joined in our game of balloon keepy-uppy. The food was delicious, the service was professional, discreet and very friendly. All in all we had a fantastic time, more importantly mum had a vry memorable birthday! Thank you

We travelled down from Carlisle for the weekend. My daughter looked at the reviews and chose the restaurant . She could not have picked a better place. The food was first class . One of our party is vegan and said his food was outstanding. The service from our waiter was also excellent . I think his name was Francesco , sorry if wrong . His attention to detail enhanced a wonderful evening with a great atmosphere. Would recommend a visit if in St Albans. Well done and many thanks to all.

We booked a table for 23 as a surprise for my grandma’s 90th birthday. The food was all absolutely delicious (not a single complaint) and so well done. The meal was well organised and the staff were so attentive. The restaurant (and private room) was beautiful. Everyone was so impressed and the whole experience was perfect. We couldn’t have asked for more and it made it such a special occasion. Thank you!

Not the first time we've met here. Easy access from across Hertfordshire. Easy parking even though Weds is market day. (A tip - the St Christopher Place car park has a valet guy and the car park is free with him!). The restaurant was as good as ever but surprisingly confusing! Constructive criticism: There's a Set Menu for lunch - £22-25, which we all might have chosen...... (No printed Menu available, only give verbally by our Server. There's a Main menu - a good range of meats, fish, vegetarian.... (and one or two from the "Set" menu (??!! why?, why not?!) There's a Festive menu- £36, which none of us wanted and was only found by finding little Christmas Tree symbols on the usual menu. Some dishes had supplements (unwelcome when a premium is being charged). Two of us had starters whilst our ladies decided it was too much bother to choose. So we had 2 Confit Ducks and 3 Cornish Soles, largely because we were confused on what was on which menu! £46ph was fair value. Why make it difficult for the Diners and for the poor Server guy? Simple is better and too much choice sets a meal off wrongly. Management, please get a grip and put yourselves in you Diners' position.

I went on a quiet Sunday evening, and was cheered up by the excellent chestnut mushroom soup, Cornish sole and chocolate mousse. It couldn't have been done better, and the friendly, cheerful waitress made the quietness just fine.

We often go here for birthdays, it's a great restaurant! As a vegan I think their vegan starter and main option(s) are fairly good, however, one small thing that cost this place the 5th star is having pineapple carpaccio as the only vegan dessert. It's a fancy way of saying "piece of fruit" and is a pretty disappointing end to the meal. Otherwise, staff are lovely, atmosphere is great, so really no other complaints!

Nice simple dishes done well. (Dover sole and ham hock. ) Good service. Some nice wines listed.

It's exactly how restaurants should be, offering different dishes which you may or may not like. Definitely worth a visit. Not 5 stars as I think it could be more competitively priced.

Came here for Sunday lunch expecting better. The oil served with the sourdough tasted of nothing; I have no idea what it was and thankfully I have never tasted oil like it before. The greek salad was very underwhelming and expensive at £16.50, especially as the portion was very small. The Chicken Caesar salad was made with free-range chicken and was good. The 'Eton Mess' consisted of a bowl of cream, swirled with a red sauce, with a few pieces of strawberry and meringue incorporated. Essentially, you were eating cream. Very disappointing.

Really loved this place. Super helpful and efficient staff, varied and creative menu. The fooc was really very good all cooked to order too Great value set menu. Non alcoholic drink options delish. Very good with a food allergy. Unusually they actually listened to the person with the allergy which I can tell you is unusual Definitely returning and recommending.

We were placed in the downstairs private room but it was awfully cold and despite many requests to shut the door or adjust the air con we were cold all night. The food, when it arrived on cold plates, was absolutely delicious but we had to stare at out mains for ages until the side dishes arrived. There were a few other service glitches which is such a shame at a nice restaurant serving great food.

We visited Lussmanns as a large party of 11, there was a bit of a mix up with the pre-ordering but Kelly was amazing - she gave us some free sides and was so friendly and welcoming. The food was ok, mine (ham hock terrine and the chicken schnitzel were extremely salty). A few complaints on other food orders too (inedible mustard starter etc) but those issues were mainly rectified. The restaurant is lovely and all the staff were great. Gluten free options available

Just happened to pass after our visit to the Cathedral - we were lucky enough to get a table as this is, quite rightly, a popular place. The ambience is very pleasant with an open, airy feel with staff who are attentive and very welcoming. We enjoyed a smashing lunch - the gazpacho being wonderful, followed by chicken Caesar Salad - huge - and very tasty. Their set lunch menu is such a bargain and the whole experience is to be recommended if visiting St Alban's.

We ate lunch here after visiting St Albans Cathedral - its very close by. We were welcomed by a friendly member of staff and shown to our table. The restaurant was busy with a variety of people, some business people others friends and relatives enjoying a mid week lunch, nice ambience. We both ate from the 3 course set menu which at £23.95 was excellent value. The food was well cooked and nicely presented by friendly efficient staff. A service charge at 12.5% was automatically added to the bill which we were very happy to pay. Would be happy to eat here again.

Relaxed, friendly and nice. Yes - I said 'nice'. I like this place. I don't visit too often - the menu changes from time to time and I enjoy variety; therefore I like to pace my visits! The food is cooked and presented well and I like the fact that Lussmans is built around sustainability. The atmosphere is light and airy too. Definitely recommend.

Tucked away in St Alan’s is a diamond! When we stepped in we were immediately greeted by friendly and professional staff. The food was excellent, everything really fresh, high quality and tasted incredible. It might be the best fish and chips i’ve ever had in a restaurant. The space is welcoming and clean and comes with Air con which was very welcomed on such a hot day! Have relatives in the area so will definitely be back next time!

We came for our second visit and yet again, did not leave disappointed. We were sat on a surprisingly busy Wednesday evening. There was also live jazz, which helped make a lovely atmosphere. Our food was outstanding once again. The chefs here clearly know what they are doing, as our fish was cooked to perfection yet again. I must admit I did have a sneaky nose through the kitchen window just to watch for a little bit, and both chefs were flat out busy, which was good to see. Our service, also impeccable. I believe our waitress was Sam? (Sorry if I’ve got that wrong!) and she was so attentive, and gave the impression she really cared if we enjoyed our evening, such a nice change as a lot of high street places can feel very robotic? Their service was good, waitress was attentive and could anticipate our needs well. We ordered the spaghetti with tomato sauce (which was so-so), the fish and chips (a specialty on Friday) and the cod. The portions for the fish and chips was big and could be shared with two people. The taste was just ok. We also tried the Cornish sole which was also ok. The ham hock terrine was also ok.

Superb food, really best I’ve ever eaten in St Albans. Building designed nicely giving pretty views of cathedral area. Unfortunately raucous private lunch in downstairs area slightly spoilt our visit. Staff friendly and efficient, though rather too informal in my view. But highly recommended place to eat.

Bright, airy restaurant with modern decor. Felt comfortable as a lone woman diner. Warm welcome and attentive service. Good range of options on set menu. One star deducted as the steak was not cooked entirely as requested. Liked the ethical, sustainable and seasonal ethos. Recommended.

Nice food, cheesecake was the highlight. Love the sustainable and local focus. Only criticism I have is that there wasn't an absolute wow course. Feels like excellent home cooking, would go again. Staff were really attentive and friendly. Recommend.

Perfect for a leisurely lunch in a good peaceful location not on the main street. The set menu was very good value and staff helpfully advised that sides had to be ordered separately. The salad was interesting and tasty....great! Fishcake was delicious with good amount of smoked haddock in it. And to make it the visit so enjoyable was the professional and friendly attention throughout. What's not to like?

We ate at Lussmanns St Albans with our 1 y/o daughter and had a fabulous experience. The food was delicious and the service from Abi & Kelly was superb - they made such an effort to keep our daughter happy, including bringing her an unordered chocolate pudding on the house; it made for a thoroughly enjoyable lunch! Will definitely be coming again and recommending to friends!

Really enjoyable meal - Cornish sole and Moussaka were great as was the wine, but disappointing cheese plate. No grapes or celery, 2 of the same cheddar, and meagre amount of the blue cheese. Waiting staff also had no knowledge of what the cheese was. Andrei should pop into Bishops Cave round the corner for some inspiration!

Excellent service - the right level of friendliness and attentiveness - and delicious ethically-produced food in a delightful setting. Special sing out in praise of the terrific “house chips”. Lussmans delivers every time.

Arranged a special event lunch for 12 here last week and we had a great meal. Ilona in the reservations team sorted out the booking with great efficency and Kelly, the restaurant manager, arranged everything locally just as we wanted it. Our waiter, Sheldon was great, as was the rest of the team. I was anxious that everything would go well but I needn't have worried - the team made sure it did. The food was great and was served impeccably - not easy with a larger group. Great food, lovely atmosphere and friendly and efficient staff - what more could you want!

We didn’t have a table booked, but were lucky to be seated on a Saturday night. It was our first visit here, and certainly won’t be the last! All the wait staff were very polite and diligent without being remotely over bearing. All our food was beautiful! Everyone raves about the posh places, but I think Lussmanns hits their niche perfectly. Their fish in particular is beautiful. We shall definitely be returning sooner rather than later. Thank you!

Dinner last week and Lussmanns didn't disappoint. The onglet steak bruschetta is a revelation as a starter, and the oyster mushroom on flatbread as a main was great. Try the pineapple carpaccio as dessert - delicious. Good service and reasonably priced wines. Andrei deserves the success of his restaurants!

The food was nice but the portions were inadequate. Had an evening meal, fairly pricy, nice food nicely presented, but so inadequate I needed supper when I got home .

In celebrating the 80th birthday of a special person, all 19 guests have said how much they enjoyed our long lunch. Choosing our 3 courses from the party menu meant the timing was perfect, the food delicious, fizz and wine plentiful and the service was outstandingly friendly and professional. Thank you Lussmanns for making our day so smooth and successful. Definitely the best resturant in St Albans.

Fish courses were excellent, lamb moussaka was v good, the King oyster mushroom souvlaki was awful and was sent back. No better second time round. Interesting that the owner did not know what ingredients are listed on his menu!

I had been following Lussmams for a short while on Instagram because of their sustainability and amazing decor shown in their photos. I decided to visit our nearest one which was at St Albans, about an hour and 20 minutes drive away. I brought my mother in law who appreciates fish dishes over meat and I suggested we stay overnight to relax and enjoy the jazz on offer this particular Wednesday. So, booking two days holiday from work, paying for two rooms at the Sam Ryder hotel and driving a round trip of 3 hours was totally worth it! Bravo Lussmans! The staff were amazing, Kelly absolutely made this experience next level, you could clearly see that the staff are destined for hospitality and knew exactly how to engage and when to leave us alone. Perfect! The food was incredible. The onion rings to die for! Bob the pianist was brilliant. We sat next to another table that was about 2 foot away from us and I was a tad worried that we’d hear each others conversations but the way the way the restaurant was designed and the soft furnishes completely diluted any noise. Very clever. We will be back!

We visited for an evening meal and the restaurant was busy. Nevertheless, the service was very professional and the interior of the restaurant very clean and stylish. The food was a bit of a mixed bag, however. For the price paid, I would expect a consistently good experience. The sardine starter with potato salad was ok, though not amazing - the dressing was beautifully punchy with mustard, but the potatoes were undercooked. Main courses were, again, mixed. The slow cooked beef, in all honesty, was actually quite dry and slightly tough - which was very surprising considering it was slowly braised. The side dish of vegetables were nicely cooked and seasoned. I had the halibut main course. The fish was beautifully cooked, but was under-seasoned. I know this is a personal thing, but it rendered the fish quite bland. The accompanying creamed spinach and sauce were lovely (and well seasoned). Desserts were lovely, particularly the orange brûlée. This was well-balanced and not overly sweet. The chocolate mousse with hazelnut crumb was also tasty (although parts of the crumb were too hard). All in all, I was slightly disappointed by the experience, especially given the price paid. The food was not ‘bad’; it was simply underwhelming to us. A few tweaks would really transform the dishes.

Birthday meal for three. Running late due to accidents on the surrounding roads. Kelly was very understanding and accommodating (we weren’t the only party to have people arriving late) and offered several alternatives depending on what time we finished. Alex was just brilliant - very friendly, personable and efficient. The food was very good; my halibut was beautifully cooked. We couldn’t have asked for a better birthday experience.

Only wish there are more restaurants that served sustainably sourced food around! Also, the lunch set is at a unbeatable price/quality. Do make sure to book ahead!

I had an amazing birthday lunch at Lussmanns in St Albans. Everything was fantastic from the moment we were greeted to the moment we left. The menu has a really nice variety of different options. The food was great and came out quickly. The service was really excellent. The wait staff were happy to help with any questions and they took the time to wish me happy birthday and add a candle to my dessert which was really lovely and appreciated.

lovely evening here for dinner. we had the private room downstairs and it was great - there was a lot of us so we weren’t worried about noise and our servers were super attentive. plus the food was wonderful - wouldn’t hesitate to visit again!

Great food at great value and very helpful staff.

We had a family meal here last Thursday evening. The atmosphere and food was good (even if the steaks were a bit tough) and the service was efficient and polite. What made it great was the phone call that we received the following day to say that some keys had been found underneath the table where we sat. It turned out that our son had dropped his jacket and the keys had slipped out so I collected them without any fuss. Thank you so much to the staff member who found them and bothered to call us. Brilliant service.

Disappointing food. All the fish was overcooked, the poached egg was hard boiled, and nothing was seasoned. Such a shame as this place seems highly recommended. Overrated in my opinion.

Love coming back to this place whenever I m in town. Fresh, varied menu with seasonal flavours and excellent ingredients. Service can be a little slower when it's busy, but staff are always pleasant and responsive. Cocktails are good too :)

Delightful in every sense of the word.

We had a warm and bubbly welcome from Kelly F., who was thankfully there to guide us in through the voluminous folds of the heavy curtains which were doing a good job of keeping the February evening chills at bay. The food was delicious, lovely and hot and Hannah and Sheldon who served us were quietly attentive, warm and respectful. All four of us really enjoyed our time there and would be happy to return.

A lovely venue for a special lunchtime family event. We were so pleased to have a reserved space on the top mezzanine, this was perfect for the number of guests we had. The serving staff were efficient and organised and the food was mostly tasty, although unfortunately the vegetarian option was rather bland and greasy. The children were served promptly and the food from the children's menu was mostly good, although the chips were covered in salt and my toddler was unable to eat the rather fiery kids Linguine Fiorentina due to the amount of chilli! Unfortunately one member of the management seemed less than keen on our party being there, she didn't hide that she wasn't keen on the presence of our children, was eager to get their desserts sent out before the adults had received their mains and was most certainly pleased to see us leave. Such a shame as we otherwise enjoyed the experience.

This restaurant is easy to reserve online, which was definitely necessary on the Friday night we visited. It has a large and pleasant interior, which was nice and warm on a very cold evening. We decided on two different fish dishes and both were excellent. The staff were professional and friendly. We definitely would definitely visit again.

Wonderful restaurant, with superb food and an original menu, using locally sourced produce. The service was second to none and and the team at Lussmanns could not do enough for us. I would highly recommend.

We had booked for our anniversary meal (had made aware in the booking), however didn't feel the service lived up to its expectations. Everyone was extremely polite and friendly, however service did drag a little too much for our liking, making us feel forgotten at times. The food was decent, but not outstanding. We both chose the lamb, which was cooked well, but we unfortunately found it to lack in real flavor. The menu mentioned it would be accompanied by a red wine jus, but the limited amount on the plate made it almost negligible. This could also be said for the rather small serving of mint sauce atop the protein. On a positive note, the dessert was quite tasty and I would recommend the chocolate mousse!

Lussmans is an outstanding restaurant in St Albans. I have been visiting for several years, taking work colleagues here many times. This visit was our team Christmas meal, in the private dining table on the ground floor. The choice of food on the menu changes constantly, as the restaurant has a policy of sourcing fresh, local produce in keeping with the season; and this is just one of many treats as it’s always full of choice and a range to suit many. I’m a vegetarian, and was delighted by the chicory salad starter and the battered cauliflower for the main. My colleagues all were equally satisfied by their choices and we all felt the food was delicious and well portioned. We were served by a very friendly, attentive and excellent waiter; and the atmosphere was great as always. The private dining area is such a cosy nook, and it feels like you have the place to yourself. I know we will be back again in the spring, and to have many other work outings.

Tried the Bombas and Hunters Bruschetta for starters. Overall they were ok, there was very little mutton taste in the bombas, bruschetta was good with some nice flavours coming through. The duck leg confit for mains was quite nice, if there was no gravy, the duck was pretty dry. Tried the orange brûlée, which was ok. The layer on top has the orange bitter flavour. The Americano (coffee) was unfortunately terrible and had the most bitter taste. Was not a great end to the meal. Overall, the food was decent however nothing exceptional. They are sustainable and the food you are eating is organic and healthy. I think a few adjustments could make the taste slightly better.

Overall good value, attention-to-detail service, friendly staff. If I knew the Manager's name I would thank her personally. She made our evening special just by her nature, thoughtfulness and consideration. Lussmans is a restaurant that I've enjoyed every single meal and never been let down by. It's one of my go-to places in St Albans.

We went to Lussmans for my Birthday lunch with friends. The waiting staff are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We all had the 3 course set menu and it was delicious. I was given a bunch of flowers and they even gave me some water to keep them in until we had finished our meal!
