This place is a shambles. Absolute chaos. No one seems to know what they are doing. Running about all over the place. Took ages to order. Took ages to get our order. Then they forgot our drinks. Everyone working there seemed to be taking orders, dealing with the orders, taking payments, clearing tables. Chaos reigns. Watching other tables, you could see it was a similar experience for them. Kitchen staff left at 8 on the dot. Shouting cheerio. Have a great weekend to the other staff. Music playing in the kitchen but not in the cafe but loud enough so everyone could hear it. The ice cream is nice but this whole set up should be much, much better. Luca's is an Edinburgh institution. What a mess.

My oh! my! - was this one of the worst places that I have ever been to. It is close to winning that award. It was my husband's 75th Birthday and thought we might go for an ice cream. We decided we might try some food. Yikes! bad mistake. We both ordered what seems a safe bet of pasta with mushroom and garlic. It did come on a large plate - but what it offered in size certainly fell far, far short of quality. It was probably the worst bowl of pasta that I had ever experienced in my life - and of the standard of some slop served at school dinners. To start with it was served cold - cold plate cold food - and it came back lukewarm. I decided at this point not to make a fuss being a birthday. But ugh.. the sauce was all watery - with I expect a over squirting of some garlic paste into the mix - the mushroom with blanched and lifeless. The pasta could have bounced it was rubbery and under-cooked. And a fork and knife to eat the runny and it was very runny sauce. So after asking for it to be warmed - it was then - can I have a spoon? I started not to be enjoying my experience - and started to feel like I was being turned into a problem customer. Well, the spoon arrived .. food was colder again - and the taste - a couple of spoonfuls and I started to feel quite queasy - the plate was pushed to one side - my husband was starving and worked harder at it - he said he felt sorry for me not getting any food. I told him I felt sorry for him eating it. Did anyone ask if we have problems with our food - no! we just got some casual shirking of shoulders with being problem customers. I asked for a box to put the food in - as it was going to go out to the fox and not straight in their bucket .. did anyone ask if there was at this point a problem.. no! so on top of poor food, there was also rather poor service. The place was stinking - and I could feel chips, papers and indeed a pencil moving about under my feet. The floors seem to only have been swept on the areas visble to the naked eye - but not to where sweeping was actually required. We had the ice cream - we really should have left after the pasta and refused to pay for it - it was that bad - but we stuck it out with the ice cream. It was fair - but surprisingly rather bland. But acceptable. So time to pay - I managed to slide out of the booth on the chips on the floor - and when we paid - to add insult to injury - they added extra items onto our bill. Do you think they wanted happy returning customers - I don't think they did. Oh! that's a mistake was bleated out.. aye! only after I pointed out they had added over £10 in extras to our bill. No apology - just three faces with grim stares behind the counter as if we were to blame for the horror of the place. The only mistake that day was us going in there in the first place. It was the pits. So £32.90 for starters - not eaten and as described above, served in dirty surroundings, with a reasonable ice cream in a glass too long for the spoon to reach the bottom - well, - we did feel completely RIPPED OFF. I could have gone to a restaurant and got a lunch for that. I know it was a cafe set up - but it was bad school dinner food. I left feeling that it was a totally unpleasant experience - and one we won't be repeating - god knows what the kitchen was like. Did I leave anything out.. nope! someone in there - needs a good kick up the pants.. it was one of the worst places that I have experienced in a very long time. So well done .. five stars to you for a grotty and miserable birthday experience in a hobbit hole. So much for my treat for my husband's wee celebration .. I still feel nauseous as I write this.. but does S Luca care - do they?

We took away a milkshake (dark choc and coconut) £3.75 and a lemon sorbet cone. Milkshake was good but still had a scoop of ice cream at the bottom so hadn’t been mixed properly, I just let it sit in the sun some more and it was fine though. The lemon sorbet was lovely too. If it’s nice take your stuff to go and walk over the brunstfield links if you can make it last that long!

We visited today without knowing they stopped serving food at 4pm….we were there at 3.30, I placed our order the food came, was decidedly average and before we knew it the spray cleaner was out, the empty tables and chairs were being cleaned and turned upside down and I felt we were under pressure to finish up and move on. Also the desserts weren’t what the used to be and the milkshakes were decidedly bland, as my grandson said Five Guys was definitely better. Will not be back

I’m a big ice cream fan and have tried many spots throughout the city. I decided to try this branch at the recommendation of a friend, travelling an hour out of my way to try it. I was stupendously disappointed, both by the place and the ice cream they are apparently so famous for. I chose to sit in in the cafe upstairs so I could have a more elaborate sundae. I ordered a fudge sundae with some extra toppings. The ice cream itself seemed rather bland. The flavour wasn’t at all noticeable and the toppings were sparse at best. Additionally, there were definite problems going on within the staff. The waiter who served me was very sweet and made sure I had everything I needed, a very young man who was incredibly friendly. But there was a very unpleasant woman who was frequently back and forth throughout the place who I assume to be some form of management. The staff definitely seemed on edge around her and she wasn’t particularly pleasant when I stopped her to ask about the take away tubs - this was only because she was transporting some. Her attitude rather upset me as despite the lacklustre sundae, I was rather enjoying my time there. I had planned on taking some home, hoping the tubs would be better when I could add my own toppings. Although, after this experience I decided to quickly get my bill from the (very efficient) waiter and leave immediately. I certainly wouldn’t wish to return and would recommend others don’t attend either.

My family and I went for a walk and popped into the local institute of Luca’s. You know what you’re getting. The world famous ice cream of many different flavours that you didn’t know existed. It’s on two floors in the heart of Morningside, purple chairs and seats set over two floors. With it being a Sunday it was busy. A queue snakes around form the counter to the bottom of the stairs but things were ran smoothly. The staff are brilliant, chatty and enthusiastic without being overbearing. It’s the ice cream though that sets it apart from other places specialising in desserts. I went for three scoops and could have had more. There’s always the next time!

Gorgeous ice-cream, been here plenty of times before but this was my first visit in a while and my high expectations were certainly met (and then some)! Had banana flavour (one of my favourites but unfortunately underused in British ice-cream & gelato parlours) which as always hit the spot along with being probably the freshest-tasting version I've had, and the Xmas Pudding scoop was also delicious. You could definitely taste some alcohol but it wasn't overwhelming, which it easily could have been. The flavours were all balanced perfectly, yum! I love festive scoops and this was probably my new favourite, it was utter perfection. Must remember to go back for a carton before the season is over! Great customer service and pricing too.

Five of us nipped in for lunch on a quietish Tuesday and got a nice booth right away. The service was quick and friendly as always. Pasta, a burger and panini were served, together with sides, and all were excellent. This was followed by ice creams, which were also delicious. Together with drinks, the bill was £13 each which represents terrific value for money. This family-run business has been providing unpretentious fare at a really good price, combined with friendly service, for years and deserves its success. So skip the soulless Costa next door and give it your support. A couple of points to bear in mind: parking can be tricky (but that affects all businesses in the area); and you may have to queue at busier times as they don't take bookings.

The food is good quality as are the surroundings and service. We had nachos, cheese toasties, burger and pancakes and it was all great, apart from the nachos which were just ok. Ice cream sundaes are fantastic. Pick how many scoops you want and any extras you want. Ice cream is beautiful! My partner ordered sticky toffee pudding. I tried some of it and it wasn't my cup of tea. Bang on for ice cream. Stick to that!

Great choice for a fun cafe menu but leave yourself some space to follow up with the best ice cream sundaes ever! The hot chocolate fudge sauce makes it for me every time. Or simply pour it over a few scoops of fruit sorbet, like lime, mango and raspberry - what a treat!

This may not be the first thing you would think of having at Luca's - after all it is famous for its ice cream. The cafe has been refurbished recently and looks good though rather dark downstairs. Upstairs is bright and well laid out. The staff were very efficient and pleasant. We both had bacon rolls - simply super. Lots of teas and coffees ( with handy diagrams about what all these Italian coffee are). Excellent value. We'll be back in warmer weather to try the ice cream sundaes! Or just buy a tub to takeaway or some of the delicious chocolates they sell...

Lovely cafe - have been going here for years. They service a good selection of ice cream. A personal favourite is their Jaffa Cake ice cream!

We visited the restaurant on Sunday 12th in the early afternoon. It was busy but we only had to wait about 10 mins for a table. The restaurant is similar to an American diner rather than a 'posh restaurant' but it is very clean and fresh with a noisy bustling atmosphere. We had a mixture of main courses and starters along with an ice cream desert and everything was top quality. The prices are very reasonable with meals and drinks for 3 people only coming to £40

I cam here with a friend as we had heard the ice cream here was the best in Edinburgh. The inside is cheerful, with an american-diner feel, and there was plenty of flavours as well as options for sundaes etc as well as savoury food. The prices were great - ~£2.90 for 3 scoops in a tub! As for the ice cream, although it maybe didn't live up to my (probably too high) expectations, it was still tasty and I would definitely return!

Don`t be fooled into thinking that they only serve ice cream, they serve lots of really good home made cafe food which would not disgrace a much larger establishment. Their all day breakfast is ridiculous value, and the soup is really tasty too. As for the ice creams, delicious, and large! £6.75 for a toffee sundae which I struggled to eat half of it! Next time you are in the area, do give it a try, you won`t be disappointed.

Luca's is an ice cream joint. The ice cream is pretty yummy, more milk ice than thick and luxurious cream but nonetheless, the place succeeds in its primary remit to deliver cold deliciousness: coconut and dark chocolate, nutella, white chocolate brownie, and mint were all thoroughly enjoyed.

Back again for an excellent meal yesterday. Good food as usual, good value, and ice cream to die for! We got a particularly warm welcome and the waitress was exceptionally attentive and efficient. The atmosphere is always buzzing here and it is a superb family restaurant.

Sometimes in life you can tell when table staff are just not focused and management are invisible. After impressive previous visits we dropped in for Saturday brunch. Warm welcome on arrival, table quickly secured, clean loo and noted the 'specials' board had some interesting offers.

Luca's ice-cream - I have known for over 40 years - is up there with the best in the world but I am writing this review due to the outstanding service we received at the Morningside store - we attended 3 times during our brief Edinburgh break, always great service. During our last visit, as we were heading home, I managed to flip a pot with 3 scoops and whipped cream on top (going out with a bang!!), onto the floor, before I had even paid for it! The young man who was serving did not flinch, there was no question of my paying for it, he was lovely about it and dished up a repeat in no time, another staff member quickly cleared the mess, I was mortified!! BRILLIANT! What a team!! Well-done! AND MANY THANKS!! I promise I will NOT do that again!! (what a waste!)

We stopped off here for ice cream after dinner nearby, on the recommendation of our Airbnb host. Handy for after-dinner treats as it's open so late at night! We had the mascarpone and cheesecake ice creams and they were delicious. It's a cute place, bursting with temptations of every kind.

I admit to being an all too frequent visitor to this, the best of ice cream parlours. My small daughter calls is "nice cream" and that, in this case is a wonderful understatement.

I tried to book for lunch here. When told they don't take lunch bookings I asked them if they could make an exception. This is because I was trying to organise a 60th birthday celebration for a woman who is recovering from throat cancer and can only eat liquids or ice cream. Surely no-one would be hard-hearted enough to turn that down? I underestimated them. They still refused. Their reason: it's very busy on Fridays! So commerce clearly more important than caring for this so-called "family restaurant"!

We are regular affectionados of Lucas but our recent visit was a disappointment. We could see our lunch wilting at the counter for ages whilst the staff chatted. Less chat, more service, at busy times, would be good.

I am partial to some frozen delights so frequent lucas more often than I care to admit. The toffee fudgy wudgy ice cream is my go to but I've tried lots of the different flavours although it hardly makes a dent in their large variety. The chocolates are nice to look at but really, why spend that much on an edible hedgehog when you can get an entire bar of chocolate and then some at the tesco round the corner? The sorbets and ice creams are fantastic though.

Went tonight and had a cone with 2 scoops. 1 was Nutella, the other was fudge wudgee, it was really good! It wasn't expensive either, only £2.25. They have loads of other flavours and sorbet to chose from and they also have tubs you can buy. If you like my review please give it a thumbs up thanks :)

If you've grown up in Edinburgh then like me you've probably had a lot of ice cream from here!! I have introduced so many of guests to it over the years and they have all loved it! I'm a purist so like to keep into their main flavours (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla), but they have many more daily changing flavours including a few sorbets. The ice cream is fresh, soft and extremely nice. They are great with kids and also have a good bites menu if you're looking for more than just ice cream.

Steht nirgends. Also am Tresen bestellt. Es dauerte 50 Minuten für "fast food". Alles etwas klebrig, keiner hat gefragt, ob man noch etwas trinken möchte. Fish u Chips waren naja, Burger war ok. Insgesamt so gar nicht unser Ding.
