This little diner was okay, the staff were friendly but openly talking about their life story and I could smell cigarettes from them. The table and condiments wasn’t wiped down at all as I could feel it was really sticky. There was dead flies around the windows and spider webs. I ordered a breakfast but the potatoes were so stale and dry. Go at your own risk.

Friendly staff welcomed us in and served a lovely full English breakfast cooked fresh and was reasonably priced. So much better than any chain restaurant. Definitely worth checking out if you like a proper English.

I had a ham Salad here. And nearly choked on a bit of plastic left in the salad! I'm glad I'm a slow eater and felt it in my mouth

So friendly and helpful. Really tried to help make my friends birthday surprise special. I ordered a dessert to be delivered over the phone for a friend's birthday, they even offered to pop a candle and a note in for me. Thank you!!!

I dont know who the people were but when I called in mid afternoon I was the only customer - however 2 staff were discussing business and people - as if I wasnt there. Please - don't do that. Its just plain rude. Food was nice. Furniture dated. Not sure if I would go back.

Looking for something to eat on a Sunday morning and stumbled across this lovely family run cafe. The breakfast was the best I have had for a longtime. And the staff were so friendly. Well worth a visit. 5 stars.

Ignore the negative reviews. A great breakfast. Fried potatoes! Friendly service in a cafe that feels like a transport cafe. Which is no bad thing.

As a family meeting we had to be in Colchester, I needed a breakfast before. We started the day. I noticed a place which was open and walked in, we had a very pleasant greeting from a young lady, which is always nice when you walk into a place. I ordered breakfasts and tea, the tea came in a teapot & not a bag in a cup, as this seemed to happen in most places. The breakfast came out within ten minutes all freshly cooked, and I will say it was one the best breakfast I have had in the last 5 years, and I have had quite a few all around the world in hotels and restaurants & cafe’s. The price is good and the staff are good and look after you. The place is a bit tired, but that does not stop good food. Thank you. So if your in Colchester shopping or just visiting the oldest town, Find it, and try it you may be surprised. Alan G

Terrible staff, they were throwing jokes about us and said they didn’t want to serve us so we left. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, we didn’t feel welcome at all.

A very dark and dingy establishment. A feel of an old persons living room. Decor just wasn't nice and could do with a good clean. Food was bland and nothing special as was the service. Doubt I'd go back again to be honest

Food hot and well cooked, reasonably priced! One of the waitresses needs to work on her people skills! But the owner much more approachable and friendly. Would recommend. Decor does need improving. This could be as simple as removing cobwebs and old sticky tape complete with past years tinsel. Along with a bucket of hot soapy water and elbow grease.

The food is ok for the cost. The staff could do with some customer service training. I did not expect to have to chase down the waiter because he walked away part way through my order.

This place is a little diamond, against all the big guns of other chains the staff are always helpful, food is plentiful total value for money. Lots of regular customers, who have probably been going in there since they were youngsters.decor is a little worn, but it kind of adds, a nice family feeling to the place.

Spa day for Mothers' day. Lucky that the beauty therapists were so good because it saved the day. Pool area looked very good but the aromatherapy room had nothing of aromatherapy about it and the pool itself was icy. The relazing pool was also too cold to sit in but the jacuzzi was warm: unfortunately the bubbles were absolutely violent and because so much chlorine had been used in the water, it was spat in your eyes and we had to get out, eyes streaming. So we went to get our afternoon tea: what a disappointment! When we got to the café area we were left waiting for quite some time with no one to seat us. The room was in a mess: tables covered with detritus. They only managed to clear up by getting a beauty therapist to come and clear the tables! We settled in for tea.5 minutes later we had eaten it! We each had the equivalent of 2 slices of bread cut into 4 little sandwiches. Only 2 fillings: cheese and tomato and egg mayonnaise. Usually if you go out for afternoon tea you have double this amount and are then offered more. At Ballentynes you had a couple of mouthfuls and when we asked for more were told we would have to pay for them! The one scone each was actually very nice but the cake selection was dismal, with a small piece of chocolate cake that we had to cut to share ourselves and another that looked so amateurish that neither of us wished to sample it. Absolutely nothing special about this "special Mothers' Day" event. As is often the case in hospitality the management is trying to increase the profit margin by cutting back on the quality of the offer once payment has been taken and cutting back on staff so that staff, who were, I should add, all very pleasant, are rushing around and unable to provide the expected level of service. The place is definitely not meeting it's potential. We will not be visiting again.

Excellent pub with fine selection of real ale. We received a warm welcome and were served quickly and professionally with our drinks. On a whim we decided to have lunch which was superb: I enjoyed the home made mince and onion pie in suet pastry with beautifully cooked vegetables, and my husband enjoyed the Vegetable and Quorn curry. The pub had a good crowd of regulars which made for a happy and community atmosphere. The pub is old style- just as we like it; spotlessly clean and traditional in all regards. Highly recommend this pub and look forward to visiting again when next in Bures.

***** NO WONDER THIS PLACE IS CLOSING DOWN ***** Paid for a taxi to have breakfast only to find they have no chef and no staff and greeted by an unapologetic receptionist. Can’t find this anywhere on their website, met another gentleman standing in the Carpark after also booking a taxi for breakfast. DO NOT BOTHER WITH BEEFEATER AS A WHOLE COMPANY IF THEY HAVE SUCH LITTLE REGARD FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS.
