Stayed here previously in the stable conversion and this time in pub itself. Personally love the place- it’s not the ritz but it hasn’t got the price tag either. Landlord and lady are both lovely, my son and I adore the good food - nothing pretentious just yummy!! Still boxed cider is a huge bonus - look forward to returning soon

What has happened to this pub. Christmas Eve, ordered gin and tonic, asked for lemon. We don’t have any, there’s a shop just up the road. Second visit at 8.30pm. Ordered gin and tonic, again served without lemon with flat tonic and piece of ice size of 1 pence coin. On both occasions the place was almost empty. No fire just a dirty plastic sack on the floor with a few bits of kindling in. Use to be a lovely pub used by all the villagers, not any more.

Great friendly village pub, If you are travelling up North or coming South its a great stopover on the journey, just 2 minutes from the A1, Excellent local ales & cracking food & breakfasts. The steak & ale pie is made in the village & is the finest you will eat anywhere. Rooms in the old stables & smithy, clean & lovely. And if you walk 50 m from the pub to Far Holme lane it is a short walk to the meadows of Far Holme & the river Trent where you can walk miles. Definately a must if you need a stopover. We will be back.

Where to start? The dirty room perhaps? Thick dust on fittings. Coffee stains on the furniture. A shower curtain that looks like it's growing cultures? Or perhaps the skylights that have no blinds so that at 4am the room is full of light? Oh and don't forget that when you walk in to try and book in you go through the public bar and the piano stops playing! The hills have eyes? Don't try and get something to eat after 7.45. I thought I had asked for a fried kitten judging by the response I got! This was literally 5 minutes after the kitchen "closes". And there's no breakfast. Apparently no one eats it during the week! And if you are in the courtyard rooms forget having an early night. The locals will be out there until closing time having a grand old noisy time. It seems to be a very half hearted attempt at a hotel. Never again....

We stayed at the Lord Nelson when attending the Cereals 2023 exhibition at Thorsby. The pub was excellent with great staff and a warm welcome by both the team and the locals which created a great impression. Aylish (sorry not certain how to spell your name) was good company and very personable and even showed another guest how to change a barrel and pull a proper pint! Martin should be very proud of his brilliant pub and team and the food was great. I have no problem recommending this establishment and look forward to returning.

The Lord Nelson Inn is in an excellent situation to break one’s journey if travelling on the AI. When we arrived we had a friendly greeting from the owner and the staff and were shown the rooms available for an overnight stay. Staying at the Lord Nelson is no more than a very basic experience and the price reflects this. We were shown a room which was very adequate, two single beds pushed together and an en-suite bathroom. The bedroom block is located at the rear of the Inn so there is no road noise by the walls are paper thin and every movement from those in adjoining rooms could be heard. We enjoyed a good fish dinner before retiring to bed, there is no breakfast availability. The next morning we stripped back the bed to aid the cleaners and were horrified to find that both mattresses were in a disgusting state. Stale dried urine was obvious on one, over the centre of the mattress, the other had dried dark brown body discharge over a large area. We showed the lady in charge before we checked out and she did agree that it was unacceptable. I left my telephone number with her for the owner to contact me and I also left him a message, I am still awaiting a response. Whilst the Lord Nelson represents good value for money when compared to the cost of other overnight accommodation, there is a considerable health risk to staying here.

Slept really well in spacious room and loved the proper coffee in the morning, great touch. Didn't get up in time for breakfast but experienced the lunch roast. Again great home made food. The Lord Nelson pub, restaurant and B&B is a fabulous and welcome place to eat at and to stay in. I booked two nights in a double en-suite room for a nearby event, and it was just perfect. Plenty of space to park car, comfortable room with smart tv, kettle, Tea, cafetiere, ground coffee, glass bottles of water, etc. Good hot shower. Nice firm bed. Excellent menu and breakfast was pretty damn good. The staff were attentive and went the extra mile ( or two ). Just lovely all round. I would highly recommend.

Went with friends for a meal we have bit been in a long time so was excited to go. we all wanted to order steaks the most expensive item on the menu, they had one left there were 8 of us ! So we had to choose other dishes, My friend wanted a chicken supreme they had none, she had a beef burger . I ordered a chicken burger, the presentation was lovely and impressive. The burger tasted ok but the bacon was very very salty and too much cheese. The onion ring batter wasn’t cooked well and still raw, The chips had been cooked in old oil they were very dark and they do not have Heinz ketchup in the Heinz bottles it is very runny, hopefully they will have more food in stock if we go again. The staff were great, and the pub is lovely just lacking in the restaurant department. They really need a great chef who can take ownership and create beautiful food that is in stock.

Cooked from fresh, beautifully presented and tasted even better than it looked. I tasted my partner's chicken breast wrapped in bacon and was very impressed.... lovely moist chicken stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in a very tasty bacon with a very flavoursome sauce. Very reasonably priced, all cooked from fresh ingredients and served by friendly, attentive, professional staff. I definitely recommend the Lord Nelson.

Stayed for 1 night on Friday 28th Aug on the way back up from Woodbridge to our home in Kilmarnock to break the journey up. We stayed in the Blacksmiths outside room. Absolutely amazing, Lizanne uses a wheelchair, the room was do big , the wheelchair wasn't a problem. The only negative point, Lizanne can't manage a bath, a wet room with a shower only would have been the icing on the cake. Regarding the food, out of this world, it's the best chilli & pizza & gammon steak we've tasted in years, huge compliments to the chef. The cooked breakfast was just as nice. The Lord Nelson is dog friendly which is a big bonus as we had our wee pomeranian, Coopie. We'll definitely be returning in the near future

I picked this pub due to its central location to meet some friends considering we were travelling from Ipswich and our friends from Durham. First impressions were of a nice local pub that had a good selection of beers, ales, ciders and most other things. The pub was nice and chilled and it had a nice vibe about it. The staff were great and very helpful and friendly. The food was good and the portion size was decent. We did have to wait a while for this but this was explained to us and wasn't an issue at all. All prices were reasonable and nothing was over priced in my opinion. There is a small garden area out the back that has seating. This has a kids play area within it and is aimed at younger children. This isn't an all singing and dancing play area but suited our 3 year old down to the ground. If you're passing this place is worth a visit. All in all a very nice day in a nice pub. We got there at 11.30am left at 17.00. Very nice indeed

Nothing fancy, but spacious and clean, with all amenities you could need. The bed was so comfy and had good quality linen. We were allowed to check in early to get ready for the wedding and were able to get our breakfast when we checked out at 11am. Which was perfect, as we usually miss the breakfast curfew. I feel we did well finding this gem, as we were close enough to walk to the wedding (saving on taxi fares) and it was cheaper than where our friends were all staying in Newark.

It didn't have the same friendly feel that it had when I went in with the last owners, I will remain going to the old plough at egmanton as the service and food is Devine. Our family of 8 will not be walking through the doors of the nelson again

My husband ate here this week. Baring in mind the kitchen only opened a few days before, we had a lovely meal. Nice choice of food and good choice for children to. Good food, nice wine and all at a very reasonable price. We will be back soon.

This was my 2nd annual stay here for the Christmas market. My husband and I love it here. Such a cosy wee inn with friendly staff. The rooms are very comfy and the food (both pub and breakfast) is wonderful! Will definitely return next year again. Would recommend. :-)

Visited this traditional pub a number of times over the years as have family near by. This was first time we stayed here. We stayed in one the stable block rooms. The accommodation was clean, tidy & spacious. It was perhaps a little tired but for the extremely reasonable price we paid very good value. I know the owners have done up the rooms above the pub but we chose to stay in the stable block. We had breakfast in the pub both days - this is a massive cooked breakfast with a fair bit of choice I couldn't finish mine as filled up in the free toast & juice. Most nights we visited the pub which was busy & friendly. I would stay here again. It's not the flashiest hotel but it's good value clean, serves breakfast & is attached to avert nice pub

Everything about the Lord Nelson was top rated. The beds are very comfortable, the room and ensuite bathroom were great and the food in the restaurant was of extremely high standard.

Absolutely awful. The worst hotel experience I've had, still frustrated we actually stayed there. Rude and unfriendly staff, disgusting rooms with no heating, bricked walls with no insulation, dirty duvets covered in rips and holes, ridiculously loud, people banging from 5am, by that point we'd had enough and left. Not forgetting the awful smell of grease throughout the hotel, receptionist wasn't helpful at all and didn't want to change our room even though she gave us a different one to what we booked. I'm covered in bites from bed bugs, disgusting. Easily the dirtiest and worst hotel I've ever been to.

Had been meaning to give this place a go for weeks, as we constantly drove past the sign. Never got the opportunity for one reason or another. So we took a chance and gave it a whirl on a weekday. It was very nice, welcoming, etc, etc. However, the prices did seem way off the scale for what appeared when the order arrived. It was very expensive and not THAT good to be honest. You don't mind paying a premium when the quality is top notch, but this really wasn't. No better than what you would expect to find in a supermarket and twice the cost. We left bitterly disappointed and still a bit hungry.
