Food’s fab, however wine menu, limited/awful. Restaurant was very boring, however it’s now had a revamp!! Best pl for a takeout :)

Really gone down hill since the new owners took it over. Poor service and the food is really poor. Ordered beef and black bean, which the waitress couldn't comprehend. Was brought a giant bowl of black been sauce 20 minutes after everything else was served. Still charged for it but put it down to experience and won't be returning. Shame, I've been going there since I was a kid.

Return visit as the first visit was fantastic. HOWEVER 4 of us in the party as last time. Starters were The main courses were delivered as follows: 4 portions of rice and one curry main course 10 mins later, 1 portion of Bean Sprouts A while later, 1 portion of chilli chicken and 1 portion of chilli beef Despite chasing the last main course of beef in black bean sauce, it took another 10 minutes to arrive. Sweets were ordered and arrived together after a short wait. 3 people had canned drinks at £2.75 each. I had lime cordial topped up with TAP WATER and a little ice. My drink was £3.55!!!!!!!!!! My total bill was over £140. They have lost my custom, and I will NEVER return there.

1st answered by someone who couldn’t understand my order, then passed to another member off staff who didn’t know the menu, really bad. Got my order wrong, then when I called back it was like mission impossible just to get a straight answer. Very bad. One portion of chicken wings had 3 pieces in it, when speaking to a 3rd person I was getting told you get 2 options small or large but it doesn’t say that on menu. This place used to be the best but gone down hill recently.

First time visiting in a few years. Food was usual great standard however the service was terrible. Group of 4, 2 soups arrived about 20 mins before the other starters then delay in 2 main courses. No member of staff asked if everything was ok with food and no one asked if we would like any desserts, tea or coffee. Was unusually quiet for a Saturday night. Not sure if under new management but we wont be rushing back.

Fantastic take away and great restaurant. The food is amazing, the service is great and they even have the spinny round table thing. Which is great!

Unfortunately a birthday meal for our Mum was chaotic at best. No atmosphere, waiters unable to identify dishes and drinks on menu. One Brother is coeliac and he asked what was available. They were vague and asked how ‘serious’ his reaction would be. Unfortunately not much choice when you are unable to have gluten. Dish arrived bone dry, no sauce, no explanation! Very odd. Always heard excellent things about this place but the standards are low. My other brother’s dish was dropped on the floor and the replacement didn’t arrive until we had all eaten our mains! Everything just plopped onto the table without saying what anything was. Items arrived at the table we hadn’t even ordered and we were interrogated about this! Such a shame. Expected not to be charged for my brother’s dish but no real apology from management. Waiting staff tried their best but lacked understanding and knowledge of menu - not their fault! Management perhaps need to relook at their training standards and place as a whole. Very sad and not exactly cheap either. A real shame!

Do not order from here. (Rude service, food didn't even turn up) We have ordered from here in the past but has really gone downhill and the service is atrocious. Ordered food through their website, waited for 2 hours and decided to phone to get an update. They were a little bit rude and then hung up on me after saying to stay on the line for them to check on the order. Tried to phone 3 more times after that and got no answer. We ended up not even receiving the food..... really hoping we can get a refund going via our bank as no hope hearing from the restaurant

We had , salt and chilli prawns, so overcooked with a hard coating . Very small portion Seasoned pork rib, un attractive grey colour, tough and very small portion . Stuffed aubergine with prawn .. tasted more of the filler, flour than it did of prawn. It was disgusting . Such a pity as this used to be our favourite dish . Used to be good. After a few recent deliveries the standard has dropped so drastically, we won’t be going back . Also £14.50 for 6 overcooked prawns , I don’t think so !

Great food but expensive and terrible service. Table had been booked for weeks but when we walked in it was as if we were not expected and didn’t feel very welcome at all. We were told we had to leave the table in an hour and a half but then food did not arrive for 45 minutes. When the food did arrive it was lovely and a cut above your average. The prices are high though. Just a bit of personal service would improve things

Given that we have been coming here for 30+ years I’ve never had to send my food back or even complain. The experience was awful during our last few visits - Meat was undercooked, rice was stale and service was chaos. Cleanliness has fallen and prices aren’t reflecting the once high standards of produce.

We went here on a birthday night out but I asked for chicken char sui with fried rice but not even the waiter or the other guy who came to the table understood what I wanted and I asked for no peas but got peas but just ate them as it caused too much confusion at first, but never really got what I wanted. We go here every year but will not be rushing back it must be new owners or new people in the restaurant that doesn't know what they are doing I wonder how many other people will get on asking for other complicated dishes. Good luck as some other Chinese places I go do understand when I ask for chicken char sui with fried rice. Wish it could just be simple, in addition to this we were a party off three and the party off two asked for desert but they had only one dessert left so they had to share it. Make sure they have everything you want before you go imho.

I have been enjoying delicious freshly made food here since the 1970s. I have never had a bad meal and I go almost every week. They are very accommodating if you tell them about any allergies. The waitresses can sometimes seem a little fierce but if you chat with them they are all very friendly and helpful.

The service was just sad. Have heard for years how good the food is. Waited over an hour for starters before we up and left. Other tables said they’d been waiting even longer. All the while, takeaway/delivery was going out the door.

The food was mostly excellent, but the service was atrocious. They are either understaffed or too concentrated on takeaway.

I visited this place a couple of weeks ago and was disappointed with it. Had booked a table through the website that was fine. Arrived on time and was shown to a table which 2as beside the window. Waiter came to take the order and didn't really understand one of the items we wanted to order. They only had one dessert left as to what we wanted so we shared it which was very nice. They don't have English tea only Chinese tea which might not suit everyone. There wasn't alot of people in at the time we where in so the waiters kept watching what you were doing, I'm not sure if it has changed ownership or not but I wouldn't rush back and it sort of spolit the start of our night.

Historically one of the most renowned Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh, sadly under new owners, a shadow of its former self. The staff are friendly but run about like headless chickens. Very quick to take the order but took over an hour to get our food in a half empty restaurant. Portions were small, food okay but basic and prices are way too high for the quality. We were there on a cold night admittedly but my wife had to put her coat on just to make it through the meal. For the love of god, put some heating on. I hope the owners take in the recent feedback being given and they can restore this place to its former glory. Gordon Ramsay would have a field day in this gaff! 😂

The staff were wonderful and attentive, taking the orders and removing the used plates and cutlery with zero fuss The food is really, really good with all the favourites on the menu and a good list of vegetarian options. Can't say anymore than that. Will definitely be back.

Seems like Loon Fung is a legend in these parts so I tried it for the first time today. Sorry to report my takeaway mango chicken was very disappointing. Cheap, slightly chewy chicken with pieces of tinned mango and a few scraps of red pepper in a rather tasteless sauce. Decent portion and relatively cheap, but nothing that would encourage me to go back. I also note the latest food standards report from Nov 2021 is "Improvement Required". ***UPDATE the restaurant was reinspected on 1 Aug 2022 and the rating was still "Improvement Required". Not a good sign! ***UPDATE in Nov 2023. I just noticed that the restaurant was reinspected on 21 Aug 2023 and it is now rated as 'Pass' (there are only 2 categories in Scotland, Pass or Improvement Required) so it looks like things have improved and I have added one star for this. Afraid I have not been back so I can't comment from personal experience.

My delivery is regarding a takeaway. The food arrived lukewarm for a start and took a long time to arrive. I ordered a crab and sweetcorn soup to start, shredded beef in sweet chili sauce and a side of salt and chili chips. The soup smelled of nothing, and was salty gloop which did not taste like crab (or anything really) at all. The shredded beef was soggy, and the sauce tasted like it was from Uncle Ben's. The beef also had a prominent taste of oil and not meat The chips were soggy, although they tasted ok, and the fried rice was fine. I drank my starter so as not to waste all my money, and threw 3/4 of my main in the bin. Avoid.

Delicious food and very friendly and attentive service. Would recommend the dim sum starters as well as the spring roll (pancake). The restaurant specialised in seafood. The prawns two ways are delicious. Nice atmosphere too. Medium size space but filled up quite quickly when we were there on a Thursday night so would recommend booking.

I visited the restaurant a few times. The food was excellent and served hot at the table. The staff and the owner were very attentive in ensuring that the food and service were good. I will definitely return

Amazing... I placed an order a couple months back and unfortunately I had to give a bad review but everything was resolved. Manager reimbursed the £40.00 plus a £20.00 voucher The curry is to die for, it was lovely. The bbq ribs were full of meat nd sauce was gorgeous. Special fried rice was adapted a bit for me as I like bbq sauce & char sui was put through for me. Manager was lively and delivery driver polite and helpful. Lovely wee gem of a place I have found. This is my new Chinese takeaway.. You must try, you won't be disappointed. Thank you

A once great restaurant, sadly fallen on hard times I think. Food was pretty terrible; an £18 scallops starter which must have had at most two scallops chopped and served in some gloopy MSG soup with lettuce which you had to wrap it in yourself. The almond prawns were deep fried beyond any kind of taste, and eating the sweet and sour pork was the classic "just get it down, don't linger on the texture of the meat" experience of bad chinese restaurants everywhere. It was £100 for two and I got some crisps on the way home because I just couldn't eat it. The wait staff were perfectly nice but the food was bad, and expensive. The place was half empty at 8pm on a Saturday night which I guess speaks for itself.

We were a group of 11 for a 60th Birthday, quite disappointed, all the food came out at very different amounts of time not all served together, food was OK but not worth how expensive it is, all ordered individual rices but they put all the rice in one big bowl?! would rather have just got a take away from somewhere closer to home...Only one person serving all the tables in the restaurant, probably won't go back due to the over pricing for average food.

Been here many times over the years for Takeaway and sitting in ,never Disappointed , but now service was absolutely terrible, staff looked past you instead of serving you,Food was flying out the door for Takeaway but no food for sitting in customers ,when we eventually got our food it was very good but to wait over an hour is not good service, at one point we thought about phoning an order in so we could get our food quicker,sorry I won't be back ,a great place run by people have not the experience.

my family and i came here for my dad’s birthday and had a GREAT time!!! the food was authentic, fresh, and delicious. the service was even better - the head waitress was attentive, professional, and incredibly kind. the owner came out to speak with us and we had a great, meaningful conversation with him! great people, great ambience, great food! definitely recommend :)

In my short stay in Edinburgh, I've eaten here twice. Once on my first day and once on my last. The food here is excellent, presentation and flavourwise its all there. The service is very good. They make you feel like honoured guests and will keep your water filled. Furthermore they are very personal. I definitely recommend their Lotus bun dessert, it is so good.

Went here with my Mum, her cousin, my sister, brother in law, niece, and nephew. We ordered a number of dishes to share. There was a big lazy susan (revolving tray) in the middle of the table so everyone can easily share and grab what they want. We had a big circular table since we had 5 adults and 2 children. The smaller tables didn't have the lazy susan. You should call ahead to rsvp if you have a big party and want that table. My niece is 3 (about to turn 4) and is in that picky eater phase, but she did very well here. She tried things that we didn't expect that she would so her parents were very pleased that she felt bold enough here to try new things. I think the fact that she could turn the lazy susan and take what she wanted helped her feel like she had more of a choice over what she ate. My niece and nephew loved the prawn toast and they ended up ordering more for the kids. We ordered several dishes including crispy aromatic duck with pancakes, soft shell crab, lemon chicken, Singapore noodles, satay, dumplings, squid, crispy almond king prawns, prawn toast, prawn crackers (kids loved). Everyone enjoyed their desserts at the end. There's many different flavors of ice creams that weren't too much after that big meal.

A lovely, understated dinner spot. Service is good with a very cosy, intimate setting. Dim sum selection was tasty. I would definitely visit again.

Supposedly one hour delivery time. 90min max. Ended up taking 2:15. Rang them at the 90min mark for an update they said the delivery driver had already left (it’s a 5min drive to the restaurant). 15min later I called again and got hung up on. No apologies when the driver finally arrived. Food is not up to the same standard as previous owners. Unfortunately this happened to us last time we ordered from there and gave them the benefit of the doubt and made the mistake of ordering again. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

The owner of this restaurant is a really kind and helpful person. We weren’t able to locate a taxi, so he called us into his restaurant. He called a taxi for us and in the meantime arranged some water and beer for us, and insisted us to not pay for it. He even offered all of us ice creams. It was a pleasure to meet such a humble person. We will definitely come to this place again for lunch/dinner in the foreseeable future. Thank you so much!

THE. BEST. RESTAURANT. IN. EDINBURGH. The food here is incredibly flavorful which can be hard to find in Scotland haha. The inside is beautiful and the staff here are SO kind and welcoming. Please come eat here!! The owner Alfonso is extremely humble and hardworking guy!

This place is amazing, food is so worth it. We tried beef, chicken, rice and noodles and everything was on point. The atmosphere is great and the staff are so friendly and respectful. I highly recommend this place. We also met the owner, who welcomed us and was really friendly and welcoming!!

Customer service were fine. But the ingredients were low quality. They tried to maximise profit and therefore resulted in pretty terrible food. There are many better Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh.

Been coming here for years. Orginal owners recently retired. Went for evening dinner at 6pm (29/4/2023). Took them an hour to serve the 'Starter' course. A further 30 mins to serve the next course and almost the same amount of time to finally serve us the 'Main Dishes' (3) that we had ordered ! No longer providing 'heated bases' in order to keep the food warm,but now rely on 'warmed up' plates,which means by the time you are getting to the end of the dish the food is tepid at best or cold! Due to the lengthy delays in serving the orginal plates they gave us for the food ,had gone cold and had to be changed (twice) ! The food is still of a high standard, but the service is appalling. What a shame, and so disappointing as this was one(as far as I was concerned) of the best Chinese Restaurants in Edinburgh.

I've eaten there for over 40 years, and always found the food excellent, which is why I keep returning, for both dine in and take-away. Obviously the spend per person has changed over the long period of time, but it's always been good value.

Excellent food, great staff and service, and a perfectly pleasant place to sit and enjoy all that. We're not talking super luxurious here, but we were certainly happy. Surprisingly quiet considering it's New Year's Day, but that just means other folks were missing out, and we weren't. It's a 👍 from us.

Never again, service terrible waited an hour for 4 starters which 2 were inedible. Mains finally can Salt & Chilli chips sent back to greasy, sizzling chilli beef big disappointment, duck dish to salty. More focus was paid to take away orders. Staff said kitchen really busy but restaurant was half empty, we deducted 4 items from our bill. No management in to speak to. Table of 4 next to us walked out after waiting so long and table of 3 next to us waited 2 hours for food. This used to be a great restaurant but not anymore will never be back.

Me and my family have been going to the Loon Fung for well over 30 years and it is by far the best Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh if not Scotland. Everything is outstanding! (Love to Paul & Family ❤️)

Amazing meal again. Food is so tasty. Dim sum to start followed by sizzling hot beef. Beef was really tender. My husband had szechwan beef, again beef was so tender. My daughter had Satay chicken. Chicken tender and best satay sauce I have tasted

Had quite the feast and it was rly good. The woman who served us was so quick and professional, she never let our glasses get empty. The hot towel at the end was a really good addition to the experience.

Good food excellent service, though loud telephone bell kept ringing throughout our time in the restaurant during our meal and was very intrusive.

So disappointed with my delivery. Firstly it arrived within 20 mins of ordering, it was look warm. The Singapore noodles was mostly pepper & onion noodles & the only thing I could taste was oil. I would never normally do a review but think twice before you waste your money. Absolute waste :-(

I give 5 stars to restaurants when the experience is flawless: service,food,ambience. That’s what Loon Fung delivered. Came here after strolling through the Botanical Gardens. We did not have reservations but were able to secure a table. For appetizers, we ordered their special dumplings, vegetarian(chives) steamed dumplings, and hot and sour soup and for mains, we ordered the seafood basket and the Singaporean style rice noodles. We asked for no MSG and they complied.The dumplings were well seasoned and flavorful. The soup was hot and tangy. Set us up perfectly for the mains. Our plates were pre warmed so amazing touch. The noodles were not oily and stringy packed with flavor with a little not overpowering heat. The seafood is supposedly their specialty and it was fresh and light. The basket was made of hash Browns that soaked up the sauce so it was amazing to eat at the end. Their chili oil also is homemade and made of whole chilies, soya, and oil.. amazing. Their dessert of fresh coconut ice cream in a coconut shell was unique and probably the best coconut ice cream I have ever had. It tasted like shredded coconut and mildly sweet.. just like having fresh coconut meat at the beach. They wrapped up the meal experience with hot towelettes. These additional services mean nothing if the food is not great, but to have everything come together perfectly is a recipe for 5 stars.

Menu was not so clear and attenders/the servers didn't understand English as such so communication was a little bit difficult. In the end, we had to look for another place to eat. Plus, it was a pricey place compared to other Chinese restaurants in Glasgow /Edinburgh

For the past 30 years our family have ordered and been to this restaurant and today has helped us to decided never to go there ever again, the food is definitely not the same, portion size is half the size, a group went there tonight for food and got a takeaway and it’s completely changed, absolutely terrible!!

Amazing food, great service, lovely and clean restaurant. Veggies lovely and fresh in the dishes and great portion sizes. Their aromatic duck looked amazing, will be trying that next time around. 10/10 will visit again.

After almost 50 years frequenting this restaurant whilst the food was up to its usual excellent standard it is grossly overpriced and a 500% mark up on wine is totally unacceptable sorry will never be back

We had an excellent Chinese lunch here on Friday. We had a set meal as we were part of an organised group. All of us had lived in Hong Kong previously and consider ourselves experts in Chinese food and I thoroughly enjoyed the varied meal. We had Dim Sum and several other courses and the food and service were excellent. Highly recommended

Bad service. There are many dishes on the menu but only few of them are available. Food has really weird smell, it is not fresh. When we complained to the manager, all they did was blaming the chef. Spent quite a lot of money on a few dishes but ended up could not eat anything. Overall unhappy experience

😢 been going loon fung for about 20 years with my husband and kids had some amazing meals and takeaways the owners sam & paul just amazing food but now unfortunately they have sold the restaurant and quite simply the food is just not the same infact its below average the quality of the ingredients are definitely not the same dont think i would go back now for a meal there spoke to a few of my friends who all so enjoyed meals there and there saying the same 😢

I've been enjoying the Loon Fung since it first opened, probably about 40 years ago. The menu is varied and enticing, you'll have difficulty choosing your meal. Don't worry you'll not be disappointed with your choice. The decor is very pleasant, it's undergone expansion and several refurbishments over the years. You'll likely appreciated the quality of service.

Excellent food and great service. Had the banquet for 8 of us good selection of dishes and more than we could eat. Would highly recommend it.
