Having visited this restaurant for over 30 years this last visit was a disappointment The service was good and the staff very apologetic that the food served did not meet expectations The curry was hyper hot and the traditional dishes for which this restaurant is known were poor compared to previous years. To be fair we were not charged for the issues with the food. On so many occasions this location was packed and even difficult to reserve…this time not so..perhaps that’s telling I wish them well but Loon Fung As was it is not.

The service and amazing, above and beyond. The food was the best Chinese I have ever experienced. The manager was most helpful in advising us of the best dishes for our family and describing each dish

Everything excellent. Especially Service! Come to try ~ 5 star We love special fried rice and staty chicken the best. Recommend it!

We ordered a takeout from the Loon Fung Cantonese restaurant, Edinburgh. For starter we ordered Barbecue Spare Rib. The mains included - Lemon Chicken, Mixed Roast Duck and Char Siu Roast Pork. We were asked to pick up the order in 20 minutes. 30 minutes later, I was told the order wasn’t ready. I noticed, when arriving, that almost all the waiting staff has changed yet again! Unpacking the food at home, we the Lemon Chicken was a very bright red colour, while the roast duck and char siu pork was completely unrecognisable! The Barbecue Spare ribs looked very short and gristly, and tasted very dry, with a gluey red sauce! The Lemon Chicken lacked its usual flavours and was significantly more spicy than we’ve tasted in the last 40 years! The Roast Duck and Cha Siu pork looked like dark blobs of fatty and gristly meat. It tasted like highly salty soya sauce and was completely inedible. I called the restaurant and was told there had been a change in the kitchen staff and they were sorry! I asked to speak to the new owner and was informed that they had no idea when he would be in the restaurant! A complete disaster! We won’t be back. The Loon Fung was once a great Edinburgh institution, with people queuing to secure a table. Now it’s a shadow of its former self. Hard earned money down the drain!

I've eaten at many delicious asian eateries and I am sorry to say this one was a disappointment. The service was on the slow side and my wife said the bathrooms smelled and were dirty. As far as the food goes, I did know it was possible to make asian food taste so bland. Four of us in our party, we each has something different and I believe it was an overwhelmong MEH for all of us. While the food was underwhelming the prices were overpriced. Would definitly not recommend this eating establishment. Have a hard time believing they will survive long with the product they offer.

Continuing on the BigBirthday theme , we ordered a take away from here for two of us… We have always had amazing meals here, albeit not for a while … what an absolute , complete disappointment. The food arrived after around 50 minutes, it was so cold, I had to reheat in the microwave. The wafer paper prawns were solid and the lemon chicken , “one of their signature dishes “ came in the thinnest unappetising sauce , ever . At cost of £45 for two starters, two mains, rice and noodles , it was absolutely below par.. and totally not the standard we expect from the Loon FUNG , what the hell has happened here ?

The order was completely wrong. The waiting time was x3 stated. The food was attoricious- really quite disgusting. My friend ordered ginger beef and got a whole fish with ginger beef on top???? Don't waste your time or money.

DO NOT ORDER food from here. Told 60-90 minutes for delivery, called after 90 mins and assured ‘5-10 minutes’. Called after 2 hours of waiting and told food hadn’t left restaurant yet, would be another 30 minutes.. then told it hadn’t yet been made so would be longer. Hopefully the refund will happen - not holding out much hope. Absolutely awful.

Used to eat here all the time late 80s/ early 90s and it was fabulous. Went back recently. Was delighted to see the Fun kor on the menu as that was always my starter all those years ago. Sadly, it was not available when i ordered. The lemon chicken was unrecognisable as lemon chicken - swimming in a red sauce. It tastes ok but nothing like lemon chicken Gone are the prawn crackers and very hot flannels to clean hands with. Gone are those serving things with the candles to keep the food warm. It was just totally different from before. And not in a good way.

We decided to have a lazy night in rather than venture out into a wild storm, so ordered a take-away from the Loon Fung, which has always been our favourite Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh. It was a Saturday night, so we knew there would be a wait - and indeed the lady who took our order explained that they were very busy, so it might be a wait of 90 minutes; we were fine with that but, as it turned out, I didn’t even have time to pour myself a G&T as the order arrived in half an hour (and we live at the Shore). We ordered a few different dishes and all were superb. I’ve visited China a couple of times and know that Chinese food served in the UK is very different from what is eaten in most of China - a country with so much culinary diversity - but Loon Fung is still the place to go for a great taste of Cantonese food.

The Loon Fung used to be one of the best Chinese Restaurants in Edinburgh. Not any more! My family and I went to the Loon Fung on New Year’s Eve and the service was appalling, we didn’t get asked for drinks for an hour from sitting down and the food took ages to arrive at our table. It was so bad it was laughable! We were seated at 8pm and left at 10:30pm, too slow! The manager was useless and there were no apologies for the poor service. The food was good when it arrived, which was a positive note. We thought we would give the restaurant one more chance and ordered a take away for collection on Sunday 14 January , we were given a 7pm collection and were told that the food would not be ready until 7:30pm. Ridiculous, so it’s no more Loo. Fung for me in any way shape or form!!!

I've been going to this restaurant for 50 years. Was taken by my parents and have taken my own children since they were small. Very sad to see the new owners have not maintained the high standard. The food was NOT good and the staff were worse. One guy was leaning against the bar chewing gum and our waiter put the bottle of red wine in a wine cooler! When I complained about the food I was completely ignored. After all this time I'm very sad to say none of us will be back.

The evening started badly when we arrived to find the table we had booked for 9 people had been given to another group. 30 minutes later we were still waiting to be served . Food was dire and to make matters worse when you go downstairs to the toilet you could see that the back of house areas including the kitchen was filthy. A really bad and expensive experience with awful food and terrible service. Nothing would persuade us to return.

After going to Loon Fung since I was 21 years old some 45 years but living North of Perth only special occasions now. I knew immediately walking in something was different different staff! Sammy, Queeny and the usual faces all gone! The tables were quiet, usually difficult even at six to get a table without a booking and place was grubby! Floor needed a good sweep and clean it was just after six. Changed days from que in the street (70s) with your own wine waiting for a table. Service was slow and waiting staff didn't understand menu on asking has it changed hands I was told 2 years ago! Which wasn't true! We were assured the food was the same but alas it clearly wasn't. We started with one iconic dish wafer paper prawns now very small and prawns not chopped or moist over £7 for two balls. My wife wanted golden crispy prawns which were also in a heavy batter and overcooked not like what was served previously in a light cornflower batter dipping sauce was just a vinigary sweet and sour. I love charsui pork and roast duck. But no duck or the waitress didn't understand. The charsui pork was roasted pork more like shredded pork very wet in a sauce. We usually had another dish but I decided to wait and see! Thank goodness. We asked for some toffee banana for dessert but again they don't do them! £60 1 chinese tea and a coke. Expensive for poor food. My personal opinion is, change the name as not the Loon Fung or the same quality food being served in my opinion its a bit of buying the restaurant and name riding on someons hard earnedreputation. Our special place is no longer special. We won't be back! Our local takeaway does better dishes!

Mediocre covers everything unfortunately. I had spare ribs which were fatty and then beggars chicken which was bland. Service was slow although it was lunchtime and the place was quiet. We were left with our dirty plates in front of us for ages which is one of my pet hates.

We visited with family after going to the Botanical Gardens for the illuminations .... found it by chance and phoned and booked a table for the evening. The service was very good as was the food. We went with my brother and sister in law who were on holiday with us. The portions were generous and we were offered bags to take the food we never managed to eat away. If I was in the area again I would go back here.

The service is good. However, the food quality needs to be improved. The meat in the spring roll as well as dumpling should be fresh and we were very surprised that the raw cabbage was used as the spring roll stuff. The warm towel given to us at the end of the dinner have some smell.

I visited the restaurant a few times. The food was excellent and served hot at the table. The staff and the owner were very attentive in ensuring that the food and service were good. I will definitely return.

This is a great place to enjoy dinner, been a few times now and never disappointed with food or service hence why we keep going back!

Loon Fung used to be a GREAT Chinese restaurant serving delicious food with signature dishes such as lobster noodles, crispy duck, lemon chicken and sweet n sour pork. I used to take my out of town visitors here for great meals. Todays Loon Fung under new ownership is an AVERAGE Chinese restaurant serving average tasting food. The other major change under the new management is that they have jacked up the prices combined with smaller portions. No longer the go-to Chinese restaurant for me and I'm now actively looking to find other alternatives in town.

The chili and salt squid was fire. Ice lemon tea was very authentic and refreshing. The portion of the chicken satay was sooooo generous!! Lovely and welcoming staff :) adding to my favorite restaurants list!

After 30+ years of coming here, we were very disappointed. The price increase is ludicrous. The small touches that used to be there now aren't. The quality of food is not the same.

Have just eaten the most fabulous meal here at the loon Fung.. Duck and pancakes were so good! Soft shell crab 🦀 seasonal pork ribs plus excellent service from Alfonso.. above and beyond. We have been coming here for 30 years and it never disappoints..

Terrible. Just terrible! I ordered for our family for Mother’s Day. We live just round the corner from the restaurant and an hour later after ordering had heard nothing. We called the restaurant who confirmed our food was there and had been for a while and was waiting for the delivery driver to collect it. My stepdad ended up walking round to the restaurant and collecting it himself. Shockingly there was over 20 orders just sitting on a table going cold waiting for a delivery driver to collect them. The restaurant only had ONE delivery driver and simply couldn’t meet the demand. My mum ordered a ‘vegetarian special’ of vegetable Singapore style noodles which came laced with prawns and meat. Pics attached. I mean come on- imagine this had been an allergy issue! This could cost someone their life!! Secondly - the food was obviously freezing cold and we had to reheat at home. For the prices charged you expect much better service and food quality for your hard earned money. Please never give this place your money - there are far superior takeaways in the area. Poor show.

As another long-standing customer of Loon Fung - more than thirty years - it was disappointing to read some of the reviews since the restaurant changed hands. However, we needn’t have worried: we decided to have a lazy evening and order a take-away, which was as good as ever - still the best in Edinburgh and full of flavour - and it arrived in about 40 minutes, which was impressive given that we live at the Shore (although admittedly it was a Monday evening). We’re looking forward to visiting the restaurant again in-person next time.

This review relates to a delivery order placed on Sat 3rd December 2022 for a friend and me. He grew up in Edinburgh but now lives elsewhere, so a Loon Fung meal is a rare treat, or at least it used to be. We’ve ordered deliveries for years and even before the change of ownership, the restaurant was renowned for being laughably late, with their drivers frequently becoming lost, often phoning for directions. After waiting over an hour, we made many calls which went unanswered. We finally got through an hour and three quarters after ordering. We were spun the old “it’ll be five minutes” line, which we didn’t believe or accept. To cut a very long story short, the food arrived two hours and four minutes after ordering. Yes, we were timing them. We had demanded some form of compensation and were given a £20 rebate by the person at the restaurant. They didn’t let the driver know, but he accepted our word for it. He wasn’t in the least surprised and admitted the new management hadn’t a clue. As for the food, it was okay, but not up to their previous standards. The wait was completely unacceptable. Especially so, as my address is less than a mile from the restaurant. My advice if you want to order a delivery is, phone your order in ahead of time. You may then get “lucky,” assuming they can find you.

We had a Christmas night out here today. The food was good but there was no heating on - which is fine if you are wearing layers of clothes but it was FREEZING! Such a shsme as this restaurant was well known for being one of the best in Edinburgh. Certainly wont be going back.

I ordered take-away at 18.05, and by 19.20 when nothing had been delivered I elected to check that there was no problem (lost driver etc). No answer. Between 19.20 and 19.50 I phoned another 32 times and the phone either rang out or was picked up and put down without a word spoken. As a minimum they could have set expectations when I called and my wife would have taken her insulin at a later time than she had. If they had answered the calls I would have found out that they could not fulfil the order in a reasonable time and taken action such as some sugar to see her through. The lack of customer-focus is staggering and I'd strongly suggest that people read this and boycott this place (once a good operation now a joke). They should not offer delivery if they put service that far down the agenda. To top it all, the food was crap. The chicken as tough as old boots, the sui mai now bland and lacking flavour. All over a sad outcome for a once first rate establishment but the new owners have really dropped standards.

I have been to most of the Chinese Restaurants in Edinburgh and I rate Loon Fung the BEST of the lot. The quality of their food is first class. I especially love their Lobster Noodles, Sweet n Sour Pork and Barbecued Spare Ribs.

Visited as a group of 8, and went for the easy option of just ordering the banquet. Some items were great, some were good, and some were not so good. Overall, it was decent. Nobody left hungry, but nothing was amazing.

Came here over Christmas resturant was really busy. Food was not the best my shrimp curry was overflowwing in the bowl - was overfaced by this very salty and not anywhere as good as Rubys in Worcester. Some staff friendly others not so.

Food quality was great, service was fast, staff were polite and attentive, and knowledgeable of the dishes. Only one disappointment was the glass of (French) house wine that I had, did not taste that good ....... not sure if due to the quality of the wine or maybe a bottle that had been open for too long. Pity that only one wine is on offer by the glass, as we and I am sure many other wine lovers would like to see a wider selection by the glass. Another suggestion is the option of another beer, several lagers on offer but only one beer.

5 of us went for an evening meal. Very friendly and helpful staff. Sadly I thought the quality of the food was average.The pork was tough and far too salty. The crispy beef was drowned in a very sweet sauce. Monk fish was coated very heavily and it drowned the fish (can fish drown?). The duck and pancakes was good but it is at most places. I tend not to choose this but my friends wanted it. The Won Ton soup was below average with no delicacy in the taste at all. We went to Loon Fung because Karen’s Unicorn was fully booked. Never been disappointed at KU, my favourite Chinese.

My first visit to this restaurant was in 1974 and it was a favourite even then . Over the years it has never disappointed. My recent visit was the first for a while but whilst the menu may have changed , the quality of the food produced is still superb. We stuck to dim sum this time and it did not disappoint. Washed down by some reasonably priced quality wines too. Just love the place still. Only thing this visit --the gents toilet needs a right good tidy out.

Mi esposo y yo solíamos comer en este restaurante cuando vivíamos en Edimburgo. No habíamos estado por un tiempo, pero lo reservamos para una fiesta familiar de cumpleaños el pasado fin de semana. Fue absolutamente maravilloso. Teníamos dos mesas redondas para diez con centros perezosos de Susan para que todos pudieran alcanzar fácilmente los platos que querían. Elegimos una variedad de platos por adelantado que funcionó muy bien, ya que podíamos asegurarnos de que hubiera algo para todos. Paul, Irene y su equipo elegantemente vestido eran de primera clase: asegurarse de que cada invitado tuviera un vaso de champán al llegar y mantener la comida para que siempre hubiera mucha comida caliente recién preparada. Los panqueques de pato como parte de los entrantes y la carne crujiente de chile como plato principal fueron mis favoritos, pero también tuvimos gambas y otros platos y todos estaban encantados. El personal fue muy rápido y discreto al encontrar platos, cuchillos y tenedores para aquellos que se sentían menos seguros con los palillos. El restaurante ha sido redecorado desde la última vez que estuvimos allí y ahora tiene un interior moderno y elegante con secciones gruesas de bambú suspendidas del techo, lo cual es muy efectivo. El restaurante estaba lleno y había un gran ambiente. Una noche fabulosa. Completamente recomendado.

Tienes que probar este plato para apreciar realmente lo buena que puede ser la comida china vegetariana. Es absolutamente fabuloso. Y lo que es más, puedes agregar tofu si quieres. Lo hago, así que desde que el personal me lo mencionó, he comenzado a agregarlo.Y las camareras siempre son muy serviciales, señoritas encantadoras.

Después de leer algunas buenas críticas sobre este restaurante, decidimos almorzar aquí durante las vacaciones en Edimburgo. Chico, fue una gran decepción. El servicio era deficiente: el hombre de traje, presumiblemente el gerente, y una de las camareras se veían muy amargas y poco acogedoras. La comida, por decir lo menos, fue una de las peores comidas chinas que hemos tenido. Estábamos ansiosos por probar su dim sum, pero la selección era limitada y poco interesante, así que al final, pedimos solo 3 artículos: el "siew mai", "har kow" y su bola de masa de Loon Fung que resultó ser una especie de pau que sabía sosa y horrible. ¿Por qué lo llamaron una bola de masa en primer lugar? ? Los otros 2 artículos no tenían mejor sabor. En general, decidimos pedir solo un artículo ya que estábamos escépticos sobre la calidad de la comida, que era el pollo y el arroz del mendigo. Era completamente diferente de lo que esperaba, ya que resultó ser una especie de salteado de pollo con verduras. El brócoli estaba poco cocinado, el pollo estaba duro y la salsa era almidonada. Eso definitivamente no es un plato de pollo de mendigo ya que los que he probado antes no se cocinan de esta manera. Deberían darle un nombre diferente, ya que es muy engañoso. La tetera que nos sirvieron al principio no estaba caliente, solo tibia y suave. No entendemos por qué algunas de las críticas de este restaurante dicen que la comida es buena, o no han probado la auténtica comida china o hay un nuevo chef trabajando allí ahora. Sospechamos que es lo último, ya que una de las críticas dice que la comida era buena antes pero no ahora. Si ese es el caso, por el bien de su negocio y reputación, deberían considerar reemplazar al chef por uno que realmente pueda cocinar una buena comida. Para un restaurante que ha existido durante tantos años, este no es el tipo de calidad de comida y servicio que se espera. Viajamos bastante lejos de nuestro hotel para probar el dim sum y la comida en este restaurante, pero fue una pérdida de tiempo y dinero. Necesitan mejorar su servicio y decirle a su personal que brinden servicio con una sonrisa. Habiendo dicho eso, una de las camareras era alegre y amigable. Lamentablemente, eso no es suficiente para volver a este restaurante nunca más.
