Long Kings in Scarborough

Don’t go there, we have been several times and the quality of food was always good, but last night the food was cold, poor quality. First thing we brought was a bottle of wine that was off, second bottle was cheapest of wines which was just as bad. The duck was cold and tough, the bang bang chicken was also cold, the dumplings were the worst I’ve ever had. Rice was also only Luke warm, vegetable chow mien was not good either. We won’t be going back. It was very pricey for the very poor food.

We enjoyed a really excellent meal, everything arrived quickly and hot, staff very friendly and polite. We would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Whilst on holiday we decided to have a takeaway this evening from Long kings in Whitby. We’ve had a couple before when we’ve been here and it’s always been good. Not tonight however. Not given the meal we ordered, which is bad enough, but it was actually awful. It was supposed to be a chicken dish but had everything in it as well as chicken . Pork, beef, prawns. The chicken was in batter but it was soggy and inedible. We also had a king prawn dish which was bland and tasteless. Not sure what’s happened to the place but read that it has been taken over. Not sure if that’s true but it was awful in any case. Would probably not use them again.

Ordered today for me and my girlfriend, food was poor and also forgot my drinks that I paid for, shame because we use long kings at least once a month and never had a bad meal before.

We had Crispy Lemon Chicken, Shrimp Egg Foo Young, Sweet and Sour Chicken with Egg Fried Rice. It was cooked to perfection and there was plenty of food to share.

Went to restaurant because of good reviews. Husband had chicken and sweetcorn soup and I had ribs in OK sauce. Was fair. I got Sweet and Sour mixed balls and egg fried rice. Couldn't eat it, balls very thick and stodgy and meat very chewy and rice was cold. Husband had mixed chow mein. Sure the left rest in pan, very small amounts. Prawn crackers cold and Fosters lager flat. Plates cold and chipped. In at 8pm and out by 8.30pm. Not cheap and awful. Avoid

I've been to a lot of Chinese restaurants and this must be the worst one.We just got starters (hot and sour soup,salt and pepper beef and salt and pepper chicken).The soup came which was nice,but straight after the next two meals came out which didn't give us chance to finish the soup.The plates were cold so the meals were cold in no time and they wasn't enough to feed a 2 year old

Never had a bad meal from here. Always quick and delicious. Never eaten in but had takeaway and better than any others in Whitby. Good portions and great value. Worth a try if staying in Whitby

Just returned from a stay in whitby at the fabulous morningside hotel on the same road as this chinese restaurant. The food was absolutely fantastic. My husband ordered the Cantonese beef steak hot pot. I ordered the king prawn stir fried cashew nut dish. Accompanied with fried rice and a portion of chips. The prawn crackers were complimentary. We sat in the conservatory overlooking the sea and watching the sun set. The service and the food exceptional, one of the best we have had. They accommodated my gluten-free and allergy requirements with no problem. I will certainly recommend and hope to return when we are next in whitby.

A lucky recommendation by a hotelier on a previous stay lead us to discover this. So this is our second visit. Visited Sunday evening of Goth weekend but was plenty of space despite being busy. The mix of both locals and tourists dining, and what feels like constant coming and going of take away collections, shows how popular this is. Fab food with an equally fab view of the sea. A former hotel building, nicely decorated, and on both occasions been seated in the conservatory, best place as can look out to see whilst you wait. There was just a mistake with our order (chicken rather than prawn omlette). However didn't query it as the order had been read back to us, I hadn't paid attention to my partner's order so couldn't confirm if it'd been our error or the kitchen. And hey my meal was all fine so I was happy ;) Cash only establishment but if in doubt, I believe they have a poster at the till which states the nearest cash points at a few local shops/supermarkets, so you won't be stuck. The cash only part is double checked with you when you arrive so you aren't left in a predicament at the ene of the meal...which I believe many wouldn't do this. Nice staff, we always find the teenage staff very attentive and friendly, an added surprise in this day and age!

The most bizzare Chinese restaurant. In a large building on the seafront with a long conservatory at the front. Flashing lights along the front of restaurant. Did not book bank holiday Sunday. Seated in conservatory. Pink and colourful wall and red plastic table cloths and goldy yellow seats. Service was excellent as they were busy. Girl friendly and helpful. Brought drinks and complimentary prawn crackers. Food was all just ok. We had Chinese chicken curry / chicken with ginger and spring onion ok Chips were hot and ok Boiled / egg fried rice ok Nothing special but not bad 3 /5 about right

We decided to have a takeaway while on a short break in Whitby we had chicken satay , mixed koon po , fried rice , chips. All the food was excellent and very taste would definitely recommend a visit if visiting please remember it is CASH ONLY which a lot of places in Whitby tend to be I went to 3 cash tills to get some cash as 2 had none

Sat in conservatory for our meal. Ordered but from ordering to receiving food a lot had been lost in translation. We had cold food, wrong portions & had to reorder one dish. Having said all that the food was delicious.

Very friendly services, nothing too much trouble. Delicious food and plenty of it. We had a shared platter for 2 and quarter of a crispy duck to start, followed by a special foo yung and a special rice rice. We got a side of chips which we didn't really need

Really expected much better, it looks really good from the outside. Ordered takeout, service was good and collected simply and efficiently. My wife ordered special chow mien which she said was slightly dry but was ok. I ordered special curry and egg fried rice with prawn crackers £21 and cash only as always , slightly dear but restaurant takeaway so to be expected. Special curry meat was good , curry sauce was thin beyond a joke , it wouldn’t stay on my plate, I used an oven dish to serve it. It was water and grease . Egg fried rice was a good portion., I had less than half , it was bland and tasteless. I expected better and was extremely disappointed

First time here and could see it had some mixed reviews. To be honest I rarely rate restaraunts a 5 but couldn’t fault this one. Great service, hot tasty food and a bill under £40 (rare in the current climate). Will defo revisit when next in Whitby. Thanks for a really good meal.

Me and my friend went on NYD for an evening meal. We were quickly seated with menus and drinks order taken. Shortly after our order was taken and complimentary prawn crackers brought to the table. We had 1/4 duck for starter, cooked perfectly accompanied with the salad, sauce and pancakes. Our mains were beef in black bean sauce, crispy shredded chicken in sweet chilli sauce, house special vermicelli, egg fried rice and a side of curry sauce. Brought out to us after a nicely timed break inbetween courses, all the dishes were piping hot, beautiful flavours in each dish and plentiful too. We were given a warm plate each and left to dig in! Around 5/10 minutes later a member of staff came over to check all was good, if we were enjoying to food and to take another drinks order. Table cleared shortly after we’d finished and was asked if we’d like any desserts/coffee. We politely declined as we were full from the starter and mains. The staff worked very hard and made our visit enjoyable. Will we return the next time we’re in Whitby….absolutely!

Got to say we have steered clear of this Chinese with the negative/mixed reviews? Stopping in a cottage close by and the weather was dreadful we decided to give it go. So glad we did. Picked up a takeaway for 4 of us. Guy who served me was polite and very helpful. The food was delicious and very tasty in the dishes that we chose. Portions where ample to feed more than 4 adults. Card payment would be more beneficial to customers and perhaps delivery service would be a bonus. Apart from that no complaints on the quality of the food. Will definitely be going back.

We went for a sit down evening meal here and had one of the set meals for the three of us. I’ve come back home and felt that I had to write a review straight away as we are so impressed. The food was delicious, piping hot and there was plenty of it. The staff were all very attentive and friendly. My family are all big fans of Chinese cuisine so we eat it quite regularly and this is one of the nicest meals we’ve had in years! The one thing I would mention is that it does say ‘cash only’ as you enter the restaurant and there are no cash points particularly nearby. This did almost put us off eating there as we had no cash but luckily the waitress said we could pay via bank transfer to the business account. So we did that and it made it really easy. So don’t be put off if you don’t have cash as they seem to be able to accomodate it. Thanks again Long King!

Very small portions, which came out just cooked, on cold plates. Unable to eat leisurely before it went cold. God knows what temperature the takeaways are when you get them home. However, since eating in, locals have said they would only get a take out, not good value for money eating in. But the score of 1 is for the young staff who were serving on; who were excellent.

Not great. Cash only, which I presume is some sort of tax dodge. The alternative payment method is a bank transfer, but the staff then charge the diner 50p for the facility despite incurring no cost and doing no work. Food was small in size and very average. The restaurant is brightly lit and has all the ambience of an operating theatre.

Visited Long King for the 1st time this evening and would highly recommend. Excellent, friendly service, tasty food and reasonably priced. Only downfall is this restaraunt is cash only.

Take away offered for 3 people. It took only 10 minutes from entering to leaving. For me that’s a little too fast. The portions were small. Not the best Chinese and not the worst I’ve had. But I’d not return because it wasn’t good enough..

Collected a large order for 8 people on a Saturday night. Various dishes. None of which anyone of the party enjoyed. My Kung Po chicken was salty and dry. My Singapore noodles were more like a beef chow mein and were also extremely salty. I was unable to finish either ( and these are not LARGE portions). My wife chose Orange Chicken that she says was tasteless and the only indication of Orange was an anaemic sliver of Orange added to the serving. Again it went unfinished. Our family was equally unimpressed. More went in the bin than went in the various mouths.

Went for a takeaway meal with the family and the staff were polite until I had to return a dish which looked a mess and enough to feed a 2 year old . When I asked to have it replaced I got back chat so asked for my money back. So I won’t be going there again terrible customer service in every way possible. Needs a shake up inside. Terrible!! At first the lady took our order and seemed very nice .We ordered Kung Po Chicken and Crispy Duck in a Plum sauce with fried rice .When it came it looked ok then we tasted the Chicken dish , it was hot spicey and it stank the chicken smelt and tasted rancid .So we called the lady over and she then started arguing then a young lad who may have been her son started shouting and going berserk over the Chicken dish saying its ok , its the chilli powder !. So we left All the Food after an argument Paid the full price of £24.60 , both the mother ? and her son ? did not want to know or sort the rotten food complaint . Please don't bother because for £24 .60 there are some wonderful places in Whitby to eat that will be only to happy to serve and feed you ,tasty fresh food , with a smile .

Chosen because it has a great seafront view and was very handy for my hotel. It’s quite a sizeable place with decor that is quite old fashioned by today’s standards.I ordered crispy aromatic duck to start which I suspect had been pre prepared some time considerably earlier. It was neither crispy nor aromatic and was disappointing.My main was sweet and sour crispy prawn balls. The prawn element was fine however the sauce was lacking any depth and was far from freshly prepared with no fruit or vegetable content.I am not a particularly fussy eater but my overall feeling about this meal was one of disappointment.What a shame for the location is great and the staff were attentive and pleasant. I probably won’t revisit.

We went on a cold Tuesday night so didn’t expect it to be buzzing. The restaurant is in part of an old hotel in a very dated high ceilinged room. The whole room was deadly quiet, only 1 other couple in. No music playing, no atmosphere at all, it was dreary. But on the plus side the food was very good and the waiter was execellant. A very strange place altogether.

Why do Chinese takeaways and restaurants anglicise the food adding gloopy, sweet sauces and frying things in thick batter. It's not very pleasant and we won't be back. Add a few authentic dishes to your menu and if they don't sell, take them off.

We went for a meal , the food was fresh and very hot, we had a starter the pastry was very fresh and crunchy . The spring rolls were lovely.we crispy fried beef ,it was a little over cooked but tasted nice. Also beef with cashew nuts, it wasn’t the best beef but tasted nice. If your at that end of town and want a Chinese it’s well worth a visit.

We always visit this place when we holiday in Whitby and the food is always very good. We must have been eating here about 11 years. We have never had a complaint regarding food or service. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Superb views from a very tired restaurant badly in need of decoration.

Four of us visited on a weekday evening. We had a selection of starters and main dishes, and almost all were extremely good. Very tasty, well cooked, and not at all greasy.

We ordered a takeaway from this restaurant whilst on holiday in Whitby. The order was ready in 15 minutes, the food was lovely and large portions. We would definitely eat from there again.

We were stopping above in an apartment went down for some tea to takeaway one of us was gluten free very helpful guy advised which they could do we only here a week and went 2 times all enjoyed plenty to eat and nice to pop next door to the pub for a pint while u wait well done

We returned after 10 years or more, and found the service quick and friendly. The menu is extensive a d all four meals were good. The only negative is the tired decor. We will return again.

I have just realised there are 2 Long Kings in Whitby and I have reviewed and done an injustice to the wrong one. This West Cliff one is the restaurant I want to comment on. Veg Spring Rolls were delicious but the main chicken cantonese style wa disgusting in that it had no chicken whatsoever inside the deep fried batter. On complaining the server made no comment whatsoever and returned with the bill, still without opening his mouth to even apologise. We wondered if we would have been within our rights to withhold some of the payment but decided to just give a bad review instead and never grace its doors again. Last year we were pleased with this restaurant, thus the reason for our return. I wonder whether it has new owners as it is now called New Long Kings, not Long Kings as stated above.
