Lon Wah Restaurant in Basildon

I have been going to the Lon Wah for more than 40 years and have always had a great experience, but my most recent takeaway was very disappointing indeed. I went for the Spicy Shreeded Beef and it as very bland with not much sauce. Alongside I chose chicken with pineapple and again that was tasteless and devoid of any real flavour. The portion size is quite small compared to other take aways, and yet they charge quite alot for their dishes. Maybe I chose the wrong things from the menu, but I was expecting alot better.

Had a lovely takeaway from lon wah last nite there were extremely busy last nite but phone me to say it would be it would be bit later than normal very good staff are really friendly would highly Recommend

We just had our first delivery and to say we are disappointed is an understatement. What a waste of money the food was disgusting. Crispy chilli beef was soggy chewy uneatable and just horrible, the crispy squid was also soggy and chewy, and the portion sizes are also ridiculously small. Called to complain customer service is awful! Never again 🤮🤮🤮 Make sure you go across the road to new world you won’t be disappointed !

Just had a takeaway from here and it was absolutely delicious! Couldn’t fault it! The satay chicken was particularly good! Lovely meal!

Waited 2.5 hours for delivery, we called twice and they said it’s on its way. It wasn’t. When it was delivered the food was cold, dry and lacking in flavour. I highly recommend not eating here. Terrible service and terrible food

Fantastic Lemon Chicken and Beef in Black Bean sauce tonight with steamed rice. As always the food was exquisitely flavoured and extremely hot and tasty! Service was great too - only 15-20 mins and very friendly when we picked up the food. Have been back here many times and will definitely continue to do so. Highly recommend. Must have had over 100 meals from this takeaway and never disappointed.

New to area so trying various takeaways. Have to say this was disappointing. Portion of sesame toast small, chicken in the curry tough and dry. Certainly not the best in area and on the expensive side. Shan't use again.

Been going here for years and knew John and his family since the 1970s. The food, cooked by his two songs, is amazing and extremely flavoursome! We had beef in black bean sauce and the kung po chicken - they were very good sized portions and the meat was cooked to perfection in some extremely delicious sauces! The boiled rice was fluffy and just perfect. Will always use this restaurant as we come to visit my Mum fairly frequently and always have a treat by getting takeaway from here! Thanks Lon Wah!

Had a takeaway from here Saturday night. Food was meh at best. There was 3 dishes missing (£130 order) we called them and told them and they just never come! Service was obviously awful but the food was not great bits were nice and bits were awful. Wouldn’t ever go back.

Just collected my order today, everyone was amazing shredded beef, salt and Chilli prawns, everything was hot and filled with flavour, thank you !

We have been loyal customers here for many years and it pains me to leave a bad review....but after 2 bad takeaways recently we are unlikely to have another for quite some time. The food was either dry or very greasy. Lacked flavour and barely any sauce. It’s not the cheapest by far so the standard is simply not acceptable. I will keep an eye on the reviews and will only try again once things are back to consistently good.

I think this is now take away only. Such a shame I had been eating there for 40 years.A family owned a d run. John new mist of his clients by first name.

Ordered a takeaway and picked it up just a few minutes before they closed. Chose sesame prawn toasts, ribs, pancake roll, egg fried rice and sweet and sour chicken balls, and it was all excellent. Portion sizes are just right.

Ordered the set menu for 2 and at £39 not the cheapest but heard it was good. The starters were hard and cold. Nothing nice to say about it sadly. Flavourless and looked unappetising. In the current situation, businesses can’t afford to lose custom and that’s what we tried to support but never again.

Very nice food. Very quick and tasty. Always ate here and never had a bad meal. The staff are super friendly and kind.

This long standing Chinese Restaurant has been a part of the community in Wickford for some fifty years and in all that time the quality of the dishes has been excellent.

Absolutely disgusted, we have ordered from here a few times. Previously found a bit of string in our food! The manager didn't have the decency to call us back and explain what it was or how it got in our food. Missed items on the order numerous times. Expensive for poor quality and the girl on the phone clearly doesn't hear peoples orders correctly and also doesn't read back the order. Will never order from here again as quite obviously no customer care just just money grabbers.

This is a lovely restaurant. The food is lush, the staff are so friendly and helpful and there’s plenty of space between tables so not hemmed in. A very enjoyable and relaxing evening!

This restaurant has been run by the same family for over fifty years,and has been revamped in recent years the food is very good,the staff are friendly and efficient.Its not the cheapest around ,but the food is very consistent.They also do a great takeaway service which is always very good,always manages to get to you piping hot.overall great restaurant.enjoy

WE have lived in Wickford for many years and have visited Lon Wah quite a few times for a meal in the restaurant, but we wanted a bite to eat so I decided to have a take away The Chicken Balls were mostly thick batter which was cooked on the outside but undercooked inside, also the special fried rice was nothing special with just a couple of prawns in the rice and altough the sweet and sour sauce was quite nice it was in a very small container.

Very nice environment. Service always excellent. One of the few places that offers dim sum in South Essex. Good menu and fast serving. We had a lovely time and everyone left happy, full and satisfied.

Never been a fan of Chinese, but after being invited here for a family do, I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the food was. Friendly staff (unusual for a Chinese restaurant) and very large portions, great value for money. Also there didn’t seem to be the usual MSG sprayed upon all the food, so I didn’t wake up with a headache. All in all, recommended.

My family and I ate here last night as a double birthday celebration. A totally empty restaurant and we were squeezed onto a round table outside the toilets. The restaurant was cold. Both of our senior family members sat with their coats on. The food arrived promptly and looked lovely. Sadly it was ALL bland and tasteless. Even the dishes marked on the menu as spicy. One lamb dish was inedible, being so chewy you could have used it for shoe leather. The drinks are very expensive. The staff were not interested in my complaint about the lamb until I refused to pay for it. Overall a very disappointing meal. Such a shame as we have been going to the Lon Wah for 40 years. We won't be going again.

This used to be a good local Chinese but over the years they have not lived up to expectations. There chicken is compressed, well did taste that way to me, and a lot of there food is not althenic.

We ordered a large selection from across the menu for a take away. The chicken satay was bland and dry, the spare ribs were even drier and the duck was even drier than that! Everything was bland, tasteless and all the meat was over-cooked. A massive disappointment... especially as it was extremely expensive. A complete waste of money, will never order from them again.

We live in Wickford and within walking distance of this restaurant. We have eaten here for many, many years. Service is always good with friendly smiley staff. Food good and reasonably priced.

Ordered a takeaway at 6pm and it took an hour to arrive. Some of the spicy dishes are really bland. It’s one of the best Chinese in Wickford but food and service is pretty average

have been going here for 30 years!! but this week the foods as good as ever, but the service was so slow. 45mins for starters to arrive and then main course my noodles came out a full 15 mins after the main dish, so had to send back as had gone stone cold. always had food in about 5 mins of ordering, so something has changed in the kitchen.

We saw this place on Google maps, and hadn't read a review. The food was fantastic. I had the set lunch menu. The beef was perfect and was cooked in red chilli which was a most pleasant surprise. The flavour of the food was exceptional.

Always come to this restaurant, enjoy the meal thoroughly. Service is fantastic, recommend a visit!!

Newish to the area & within a 5 minute walk the Lon Wah is our favourite restaurant in Wickford.

So pleased we tried this place as we hadn’t been able to find a decent Chinese Restaurant since moving here 3 years ago. Food lovely just what you would expect and staff very attentive, friendly and welcoming. Remembered our names from our first visit. Had the set menu this time and all was hot and very tasty. Went here tonight with my family and was blown away by the food and service they provided. The prawn sizzler dish was lovely! The staff were very attentive and hats off to the chefs. Would recommend to all.

Having just dropped my wife and daughters to a local venue in Ben fleet I decided to try a new Chinese restaurant. Not that many left in my area so thought I would experience one on the way home. Ended up here and to be honest, I'm so pleased I did! I always order things that are not quite as described on the menu and these people were extremely obliging! Had four courses and I'm stuffed! Every one was better than I have had elsewhere recently and again the staff could not have been more welcoming!

Ordered a Takeaway here for the first time (usually order from Billericay), I can honestly say it was one of the best Chinese takeaways i have had. The food was great, easy to order, good delivery times. All round good experience! Would highly recommend!

Visited here last evening with a friend, it was not busy but it was Wednesday, the staff are all so friendly and helpful and gave a choice of tables, the menu is extensive and clear, we decided to try the set meal for 2 which had a good variation of dishes, all the food was nice and hot, and served in a professional way and without ny hurry they always confirmed if we were ready for the next course.

Decided on Siu Mia Dum Sum and wasn't disappointed. Fresh and steaming hot.

Lush family meal staff are amazing with children we went mid week, non rushed, have had take Away’s which have been great as well.

When we fancy a good Chinese restaurant to dine in then we go to the Lon Wah. We have visited this restaurant many times & have always found the staff there to be very friendly & helpful. They have a good & varied menu to suite all tastes, they can also provide you with a takeway service if you prefer & all their food can be purchased for a very reasonable price.

Seems to be mixed reviews here. We had a family takeaway and must say the food was very nice. My only criticism would be the vegetable spring rolls, the portion was tiny and not worth the money. Best takeaway I’ve had in Wickford.

Love love love this restaurant. The people are fabulous, the food is far superior to any other restaurant close by and the surroundings are modern, clean and provide a pleasant place to dine and socialise. The food is tasty, the atmosphere friendly and welcoming. Can’t keep away we oreder take always for h9me delivery which always arrive hot and well packaged as well as dining in the restaurant. You won’t find better Chinese food any where.

Had previously dined in at Lon Wah and had been satisfied with the food, so last week decided on a takeaway. I can only describe it as terrible and will definitely not order from there again. We only wanted a snack so ordered mixed starters and a ‘special fried rice’. Seaweed was ok, smoked chicken was soggy and not a great deal of taste, and the ribs were just lumps of fatty grissle. The rice was awful, I can’t understand how a Chinese takeaway can get rice so wrong. It was tasteless and had the appearance and texture of packet rice, a very weird soggy clumped together mess. There wasn’t any whole grains of rice to be seen my husband thought it was cous cous. We took one mouthful each of this and threw it in the bin. Total waste of money.

If you visit the town of Wickford & fancy some Chinese food then make your way to the traffic lights & you will find this restaurant on the left up London Road. The staff there are very nice & the restaurant itself is well laid out. They have a good menu which caters for all tastes, all their food is freshly cooked to your requirements & can be purchased for a very reasonable price. `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

Enjoyed a lovely meal here a few months ago and really enjoyed it even though Chinese and Thai are not my favourite eats. Glad we booked though because it gets very busy. Lots of seating though easy parking round the back. Most enjoyable night.

Whilst we have only used this Chinese Restaurant for a takeaway service only, as the main restaurant is always full to the brim which only emphasises how popular this place is. We believe that Saturdays are always the busiest and you need to book well in advance. The food is always excellent and always piping hot, (served up in those microwavable plastic containers) we have never had to reheat anything. We as a Family would recommend this to anyone.

We had a delivery tonight and I have got to say we were very disappointed. The mini spring rolls were inedible and had a texture of cardboard, the salt and chilli chips were undercooked and extremely soggy and in general the meal was cold. Safe to say we won't be eating from here again. Such a shame

Myself and my wife went on a saturday night 7pm and it soon filled. The portion sizes value and service was excellent

We have been using the Lon Wah for take aways for the past 20 years and up until the last month or so always had really good food, but I'm sad to say today will be the last time we order from here. The last time we ordered a take away the food was cold, greasy and tiny portions, we wrote it off as being just a one-off bad take way but tonight proved it was clearly not. My husband's Singapore noodles were bland and tasteless and there was very little meat in the Kung Po chicken as for mine, I had the duck in honey plum sauce well I struggled to find any meat that wasn't gristle or bone and a strange watery sauce. The special fried rice consisted mainly of rice and peas, what is special about that apart from the extortionate cost of rice and peas! Have a look at photo and judge for yourself.Needless to say we won't be returning in a hurry.

I had read that this restaurant is the best Chinese Takeaway in Wickford so you can imagine I had pretty high expectations. I have happened to order a takeaway twice from Lon Wah in the last two weeks. The first time the noodles really lacked flavour and the meat dishes were dry with no sauce. We had ordered on a Saturday and the restaurant was but still no excuse. We ordered again today, after a family member suggested trying again. The food was much better this time, we had the chicken satay and Kon Po chicken which was nice. The Singapore noodles still lacked flavour and the smoked shredded chicken isn't the best I've had. Overall the takeaway is average, I can't recommend nor complain about the food because I've had very different experiences. The staff however are always friendly.

My wife and I visited the Lon Wah on Saturday 21st January for my birthday lunch. Had a really nice meal. We had the lunch menu choosing a starter and main. We both had the chilli rib starter and the sweet n sour chicken with rice. The service was fast and efficient and food was excellent. We haven't been there for a while., but have had the takeaway service, this is always good too. Will recommend it to friends.

Had a few takeaways from here now and every time food has been really good with normal size portions. Super friendly staff and speedy delivery service. Used to frequent restaurant as a youngster but not got round to eating in the restaurant again yet. Definitely on our list to try.

Just had our first take away at the Lon Wah as the Jade palace was closed !I have paid about £7 more than I would at the jade for the same dishesAnd I have to say that the portions were half that of the Jade, absolutely disgusted, what a total rip off. I spent £40 and the four of us had to spread it out on our plates.And the food wasn't even worth the extra money either, we struggled to tell what dish was what, very blandTotally disappointed, you had the chance to get new customers and now I see why the Lon Wah always seems empty

Following lots of local recommendations on local community facebook page we thought we'd give this a try for a takeaway. Service fine, delivery fine, price fine. But we found the food just really really bland. We had crispy chilli beef and sweet and sour chicken hong kong style and if I'd have had my eyes shut I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between the two. Won't be trying it again.

Ordered a delivery of a pork curry as well as some other items. The curry had prawns in it which I am allergic too. When I called the restaurant to complain I was told that I should have told them I had allergies. I was then told the chef sometimes mixes up the orders. I find this to be extremely poor allergy and cross contamination control. No offer of replacement or refund or even a simple apology

I was just 8 when my mum and dad first took me to the Lon Wah, their favourite Chinese Restaurant, and nearly 50 years later it continues to be ours - it is still the most welcoming and consistent restaurant we have ever been to - even better following a recent facelift - and the legacy of great food and great customer service carries on through the generations - and the price is still such great value too. Thank you Lon Wah!!

Given the list of great reviews and the fact I have never been impressed with the takeaways in Wickford I thought I would give the Lon Wah a go.The staff are friendly and efficient and had the food ready in a jiffy. I had a special curry and fried rice on a week night. Unfortunately, I was not impressed when I got home. The curry had little taste and was full of onion. The chicken had no taste and appeared to have been added to the sauce after being boiled. The 2 containers were small and just over half filled. The fried rice was also bland. Given this is probably the most expensive takeaway I have tried in Wickford it fell well below my expectations and was even worse that the others I had tried. I am not a big eater but the portions were so small I need a desert after!If I have a bad experience I normally try again but due to the price and the total lack of taste I do not feel I will return. A real shame as I was looking forward to something much better.

Visited on a busy Saturday night. Staff were friendly and very efficient, no request being a problem. Food was good quality, well cooked and presented. Portions were large and if sharing then one dish serves four people. Prices very reasonable. Only an occasional visitor to Wickford but would definitely return.

We went to lon wah for the first time in June although we have lived here for 10 years. I wish we had gone sooner it was a lovely meal with wonderful friendly and quick service . We will defiantly go again .

I've visited this restaurant numerous of times and have never been disappointed. Staff are really friendly and helpful ,and the food is delicious.

We went Saturday night with family and friends for my birthday.It was a very disappointing meal indeed. The ribs were lovely followed by the duck which was cold and not enough pancakes. The phone for the takeaway did not stop ringing so we could hardly hear each other speak. The main meal was rubbish. Beef uneatable and chewy and the portions very small. We thought overpriced too. We definitely will not be going back. Although the staff were very polite it didn't save the evening.Very poor.

We have visited this restaurant a number of times in the past, always evenings, and always been very happy with the menu choice, food and service. Today was our first lunch time visit, and so we selected from the set price lunch menu, which offers a choice of about 6 starters, 6 main courses (all served with a choice of boiled or fried rice) followed by an ice cream. All up to usual standard and very good value.

Best take away Chinese I have had in Wickford. Not eaten in myself but have heard it is good. I would consider eating in.

Had a lovely meal once again. This restaurant reminds me of the first time l had a Chinese and it never changes a great deal. You can ask for variations and they are only too pleased to help you the food is so well cooked and the presentation is lovely. Staff are really very helpful and l just enjoy my time in there eating and talking. Very well done for everything lovely friendly restaurant and staff and great cooks also.

We went to this resturant for a family meal with my niece and her boyfriend. The staff were very friendly and attentive but the food was ridiculously over priced and lacking in quality. We ordered two set meals, 4 beers and 1 bottle of wine and the bill came to £180 ! The food in main consisted of pork and lacking in flavour. As this is the only Chinese Resturant in Wickford it does get busy, I think it needs some competition to raise its standards and lower its price !

We enjoyed a good meal in very welcoming and smart surroundings. The restaurant has recently been refurbished and the décor is now very nice. The staff are extremely accommodating and friendly so all in all a very pleasant place to eat.

Although the food has always been consistently good, the restaurant was well overdue for it's refurb. Now it looks really nice inside.

I've eaten in and had takeaway countless times from Lon Wah and never fails to be delicious. The restaurant is probably the nicest Chinese restaurant in Wickford and the takeaway always arrives hot and in decent time. Highly recommend.

My other half and I spontaneously visited Lon Wah for dinner last night. My Grandparents live in Wickford and we used to come here for Sunday buffet when I was a child. I haven't been in about 10 years, but I remember my family always saying how good it was. I had to write a review because we had such a lovely evening! The customer service was excellent, the food was tasty, quick and fresh, the restaurant was lovely, we were so pleased with our meal and so glad we randomly chose to visit Lon Wah! We will definitely be returning.

We have been here several times the most notable my birthday in November, this restaurant has the most comprehensive menu for a Chinese restaurant that I have seen in all my years, better I must say than a lot of the top China Town establishments in London.We go with my niece and nephew and always have the very best food and along with the wonderful banter with the staff makes it for us just perfect.The prices are very good and reasonable for such top line dishes, I hope anyone who goes there has the same experience as we do

We recently revisited this Chinese restaurant, as we have never been disappointed with their food. As well as having a well furnished restaurant, they also have a very good takeaway service. Their food is freshly prepared & well cooked & very tasty, all at a very reasonable price.

Service was excellent. Food scrumptious. New refurbishment of restaurant very tasteful. We can't wait to return!
