Lion & Lamb in Uttlesford

Saw this pub come up on Google search as we were staying in a b&b not far from this place. We didn’t think to book, but when we walked in was seated straight away. Warm welcome from what I assume was a manager. Table was set out lovely, although didn’t think much of the green cups on the table which would have 2 mouthfuls of water if used. Menu has a large variety of items. One of the girls seemed nervous to take our order, as she explained a new till system had been put in place and to bare with her, she did very well. She was very chatty which is nice to see in a hospitality setting. My husband was amazed at her eyelashes haha. Food service was great, I had the chicken trio which was excellent ! Food arrived quickly, and it certainly went down quickly! We passed on desserts, went for a coffee instead, although they were lukewarm and was more of a cappuccino than a flat white. Slightly disappointed with an added service charge on the bill, we prefer to tip when we feel it is right to do so, but food and our waitress was amazing so we didn’t mind on this occasion. If we return to the area, we will happily return!!!

We have visited a few times over the past few months for both Sunday lunch and evening meals and have found it to be excellent. Some of the staff are quite young but they are friendly, hard working and professional. The food and service has been very good every time and the prices are reasonable. There is a good selection and choice on the menu and the portions are a good size. We definitely recommend going here.

Had a wonderful Sunday roast . The waitress that served us was great very friendly and attentive. Lovely food we all enjoyed it and they were able to cater for my daughter’s gluten and dairy free diet. We will be back soon !

We came in for Sunday lunch today, on what turned out to be a very busy Sunday, all areas of the pub were packed! We were greeted by lovely friendly staff, everyone was really helpful. We had a roast sharing board which was divine! We don’t generally eat out for Sunday lunch as find it disappointing at most places, however this was not the case at The Lion & Lamb, everything was absolutely delicious! I’d have added a photo but we dug in too quickly. The only thing I regret is being too full for dessert. Thank you for making our Sunday, we will see you soon xx

Amazing food, beautifully presented, staff very helpful and delightful. I would higly recommend steak dishes. If you have a layover at the Stansted airport and looking for nice place to eat, would 10/10 recomend.

My first visit to the Lion and Lamb following a positive recommendation. Initial impressions were good. Nice décor, warm ambiance, friendly staff - After a drink in the bar area, when our reservation was due, we asked to be shown to our table in the dining area. After being asked if we required any additional drinks, we were then left to consider the menu for about 10 minutes, which given its limited content was more than adequate. (We chose fish and chips, burger and fries, sausage and mash and a short rib option, none of which are particularly complex or difficult to prepare.) Conscious that it would obviously take some time to prepare our food, I asked a passing waitress if she would like to take our order, to which she said that the kitchen was busy due to staffing problems and that she therefore wouldn't be able to take the order for a further 15 minutes...! Why this was helpful I don't know, as presumably the order could have just been put through to the kitchen to wait its turn irrespective of staffing issues - however after a further 20minutes our order was eventually taken. Running out of small talk around 50 minutes from being seated, I asked a waiter how much longer our food might be. He said he would find out. A short time later someone, whom I presumed to be a manager arrived to say our order would be about another 8-9 minutes (i.e. an hour after being seated) In the event however the food didn't arrive for a further 20 minutes meaning that from the point of being ushered to our table we had had to wait for our food for nearly 1 hour 15 minutes. How is this acceptable when a reservation has been made (?) and why did no one try to mitigate the situation by offering us complementary nibbles/bread/olives or a drink when they realised that our service would be compromised due to (presumably) unexpected staffing problems? If we had been treated with some respect in this regard, the evening might well have been a pleasant one despite the inordinate delays, as it was, myself and my friends were left feeling disappointed and upset by the casual way in which we were so easily forgotten from the time we sat down to dine. It would be tempting at this point to say that the food when it eventually arrived was poor- but that would be unfair - it was Ok - not gourmet standard or particularly generous, but as basic pub food, OK, albeit quite expensive for basic pub food. Given the time we had already spent at the table we decided against desserts or coffees and when the bill arrived with optional "service charge" shown as an addition, most unusually I asked for this to be deducted (I generally tip generously in restaurants but on this occasion decided it was simply wasn't merited) Fair to say I don't think the manager was surprised or particularly bothered to be honest - which is a shame, as its this approach which has prompted this review as well as the less than positive feedback about the Lion and Lamb that I shall be sharing with local friends and neighbours. Pity that the client care was lacking when we visited, as I was genuinely looking forward to a great dining experience with overseas friends at the Lion and Lamb and might well have returned regularly had my experience last night been better.... as you can imagine I wont be returning for food, any time soon, sorry!!

Absolutely delicious, we had the the salmon and pork belly and i am still talking about it now! Followed by a banana cake, home made marshmellows! Truly a gem, cannot wait to return, nice olive trees.

Food was outstanding. We shared the sharing platter for two. Beef was 10/10 … the Turkey was a bit dry, but when is it not? Service was brilliant. Everyone was very attentive. Shame to have no room for pudding. Not much room in the drinking side of the pub so take a coat you might have to sit outside.

Ok for pub grub but not a Christmas dinner.one 1/4 of a carrot sliced long ways is not a portion.4 bullet hard Brussels two thin slices of turkey and an oxo cube size piece of stuffing. The final straw was a slab of bread pudding served up as Christmas pudding which i didn't eat, I won't be back..

A pleasant venue and friendly staff. However, we ordered 3 portions of salt and pepper chicken wings (£9 for 4 wings in a breadcrumb finish). Sadly they were awful, I think we each managed one before giving up. The only thing they tasted of was old cooking oil.

Staying nearby for a wedding, we visited on a Friday night and were seated straight away despite not having booked and the pub being busy. Cannot fault the service, all staff members were super helpful and attentive throughout the evening. We had the duck and a burger, both of which were good, and the triple-cooked chips were exceptional! Blackberry Bakewell tart was also delicious for dessert. Would absolutely visit again if in the area.

We visited for dinner @1930 on a Friday night. I ordered the halloumi fries and the 30oz Tomahawk Steak. My other half the nachos and Seabass/prawn dish. Starters- best halloumi starter I’ve had anywhere (and we eat out A LOT). Chilli nachos were lovely too and the chef resisted the urge to cake the plate full of nachos cheese and all the other rubbish that often makes nachos too large a starter. They were precise, classy and tasty!! Mains- seabass and prawns were very good by all accounts. The 30oz Tomahawk Steak was incredible, it was better than the £75 Tomahawk steak I have had in STK London, and 1/3 the price. Simply amazing taste (see photo) Service was very attentive and both the girls were very friendly, attentive and polite. Even wrapped the Bone up for our dogs!

Me and my wife visited recently for some dinner. The food was good, although our mozzarella bite starter had mayonnaise with it rather than chilli jam, altough we didn't realise until it was too late. The service was a bit strange. Despite booking a table for 8pm, we were rushed through the starters and mains as though they wanted to get rid of us. After our mains we were told we had 5 mins to order desserts before the kitchen closed which was frankly ridiculous. We were put off and opted for coffees instead. Overall nice food but the service needs to be improved.

"Good Food Served Seven Days A Week" , or words to that effect, it says outside and on the website...except it doesn't on Mondays!

It might be after closure while I am writing this but they are probably too polite to tell me. I've had the swordfish which is extremely good (I've never had swordfish before but if this is the reference level I dare people too come close). The hosts are very friendly and like too strike up a conversation. If you want to go to an English pub go here
