Such a shame as it feels you are still operating a limited menu like we are still in lock down (main course all with chips) ) A locals opinion, it feels both the Lion and White Horse are targeting only transient clientele through holiday season and why maybe, they are quieter out of season where public houses with good old ‘English food’ for the local community are a busier. Both great pubs, staff lovely, but the food really needs some attention and love and updating!

This pub does many things well Food staff and drink range are great. But it's not really drinker friendly in comfort terms. Bar trying to be fashionable with perch seating and sofa would do much better if more conventional fixed seating was reintroduced as would create more flexible comfortable and greater number of seating opportunities The former concert room iwhich we were offered is not a drinking environment Garden is great when weather ok but needs desperately some tlc

We often frequent the Lion in Winter, arriving by boat and last year it was a really pleasant experience. Not overly busy but good portions of well cooked food. We decided to pop in for Sunday roast lunch however by 14:00 over half the menu was unavailable including the roasts. Although we hadn't booked, we were given a table in the bar area which was fine with us however the table was sticky. Even after we had asked for it to be wiped down, it was still sticky to the point the sauce sachets and menus needed to be peeled from the table. I did have to ask for service for pretty much everything but can understand that we may have been overlooked as we were not in the restaurant area. I went for a bottled beer so was able to see the glass was pretty water-stained which added to the impression there wasn't much care in presentation. The food from the reduced menu was fine if unremarkable. We will visit again in the winter when perhaps a little more love goes into proceedings. A small footnote for boaters. The dyke is not well maintained with many of the mooring spaces requiring mooring spikes or rhonde anchors as the mooring rings have gone or broken. Fortunately we were there during the 'free mooring' period however if mooring overnight, you could find yourself paying £10 for a pretty shabby mooring.

As the title say, food ok, but the service was terrible, mains ordered but the tables around received their food before us when they arrived after we did, then asked if we wanted desert and after the menu was thrown down on passing by, nobody returned to take the order, I suggest if you are a couple then your not their priority, too busy looking after groups, and before they say they were busy I can assure you they weren't that busy, we were at the ace pub the night before with excellent service and food, I would suggest management go take a look on how its done. not expecting a reply, but I would suggest that they take care of everyone in the same, don't ignore couples. This was one of our favourite places last year, oh how things have changed, probably the worst this year.

Walked to the Thurne Lion from Acle via Weavers way, I was dismayed by the shabby untidy entrance/carpark. I ordered I pint of ale and sat in the beer garden which was equally as shabby as the entrance, the grass was uncut/overgrown and the garden totally neglected, very disappointing. Now is surely there busiest time of year, the place should be sparkling, what is management thinking.

What’s happened to the menu?? We liked eating here in the past , what a surprise to see the minimalistic menu. What if you don’t like burgers or pizza? 5 main courses!!!!! No steak, limited grill, ordered the pie, shop made?????? Awful gravy! If you’re on a boat visiting don’t bother! Needs a complete revamp of the menu and a chef that can cook it! Such a shame that this pub has deteriorated. We used to recommend it But no longer!

Moored up outside (very busy and tight turning space, be prepared!) and went in for our prebooked lunch. Will start by saying the location is lovely. Shown to a very sticky table, right on top of fellow diners despite most of the restaurant being empty, and given adult menus only despite having two children in our group. Had to ask for children’s menus, then ask again for crayons to do the provided colouring. Cheapest plate of food was £12 with most items £15+, no light lunch menu is available on Sundays presumably as they want to push their roast dinners. Anyway, the children decided to share a pizza- tried to order “sorry no pizza bases”. So that wiped out another 20% of their menu choices. So we ordered them a £9 children’s meal each (costing more than a three course children’s menu in Norwich city centre!) and some burgers and other items for the rest of the family. Shortly after we heard them tell the table behind there were no burgers left, so the menu seemed to be shrinking by the minute (perhaps to try and shift more overpriced roast dinners?) Anyway, the food was mediocre at best, burger was cheap, kids meals were far too large and very greasy, should make them a bit cheaper and smaller, ham egg and chips the egg was barely cooked and the ham was fatty. Only nice bit was the chunky chips. Also had 4 meals brought out then nearly a 10 minute wait before the other two were brought out- especially not fair as it was the kids meals we were waiting on. Had to flag staff down for sauce, then the six of us were given a tiny pot of ketchup fit for 2 at the most. I’d never go back, extremely poor value for money. I’m not just about wanting it to be cheap, but wanting it to be good value and enjoyable for the price paid. Unfortunately it was a poor experience that ended up with us parting with far too much cash and wishing we’d packed a picnic. Have eaten at a lot of similar places but this is down there with the worst.

Two of us spent a week sailing on the Broads and this is a pub that we stumbled on next to the river and what a find. I believe that it has only recently been refurbished and it has been tasefully done out. The staff were pleasant, helpful and efficient. My friend had scampi and I opted for their Lion burger. We had to wait a little while for the food to arrive which is a good thing in my book because it does tend to indicate that everything is being freshly cooked. Now, I am not particularly a fan of beefburgers so when I say one is good, it will be and I have to say that mine was excellent. My friend, who often chooses scampi, said that the scampi there was particularly good. I am not familiar with the local beers but the Adnams I had was very good. All in all, a very good experience and yes I would go there again.

Its a rustic gastro pub vibe, lots of outdoor seating and also greenhouses looked like cosy spaces for food with friends. Will definitely return next time we're on hols. If there was one improvement I could suggest it woukd be to have some 'home-made' puds / desserts.

This was a trip down memory land after last being here some time in the early 90’s. I heard good things about the pub and so we decided to visit unplanned when down this way. This was the first week of inside dining on the roadmap and the pub was really well organised, with staff making it feel relaxed, yet safe. We had a couple of burgers, the Lion Burger and the Chicken burger. Both were excellent, but the coating on the chicken burger was really really tasty. Tables were well spaced, clean and the restaurant was airy. This was a lovely meal out and trip back to the area. Good luck with your summer team.

Booked a greenhouse for my husband birthday and the set menu with ribs of beef. Totally amazing food and the greenhouse is a lovely touch. Everything about the Sunday lunch was perfect. Smoked salmon starter delicious, ribs of beef was succulent and perfectly cooked - medium rare - it just melted in your mouth. Lots of veg - we had carrots and asparagus, and also some gorgeous roast potatoes topped off with a jug of peppercorn sauce. The beef you carve yourself at the table. There was so much meat! We ended up taking a doggy box home! Just managed pudding - my lemon posset was really nice. The greenhouses - there are 3 of them, are all decorated differently. They have fairy lights, umbrellas, a heater and we were given a fan and a blue tooth speaker to use. Service was excellent. Our waiter was really friendly and helpful. One of the best Sunday lunches ever! Can’t recommend this enough.

Extensive range of ciders and beers. Excellent friendly and efficient service, nothing too much trouble! Definitely the best southern fried chicken burger and chilli jam ever had! Good Lion burger too. Friendly and dog friendly. Only criticism would be that quite a wait for food, but could be to do with first day of restrictions lifted so people can eat inside so maybe busier. My husband and I visited the Lion twice during our week on the Norfolk Broads aboard Tower Bridge. This really is a stunning pub, with a wide range of beers, lagers and ciders, many from small producers and independent brewers. The food is always fresh and tasty and the service excellent. The pub is all table service only, (this was before it became compulasey) which is good, and the Staff are all really friendly. All the staff wore masks (as did we until seated). There is a one way system through the pub, track and trace done well, sanitiser at the entrance and the toilets, as well as a one in, one out, system in the toilets. Our first visit we both had the beef Sunday lunch which was to die for. The beef so tender and plenty of it, Yorkshire pudding roasties, and a good variety of veg too. I tried a few of the lagers and beers (in halves as there were quite a few I fancied trying). All were well kept and tasted great, some of which I have never heard of before. Hubby had a couple of pints of ABK and liked that as well. Desert of chocolate orange brownie and ice cream, which was fab too (although a little more expensive than the average pudding, we didn’t mind as we were on holiday). Despite being really busy with every table taken the staff worked tirelessly and efficiently so that no one was left waiting more than a couple of minutes to order or receive their drinks or food. The tables both inside and outside are well spaced and it feels very Covid safe with all the measures in place. Our second visit in a week and I had the cod served on crushed potatoes with greens and a really tasty sauce. Hubby had steak which was cooked to perfection. We even had takeout pizza in the evening which was fabulous too. All the food is freshly cooked and served in a timely manor, the drinks are well kept and from a wide range of breweries. If you in the area it’s a must visit place, but please phone and book a table.

Having lived just south of Norfolk for 19 years we had never ventured out for food here before and only did as we were meeting up with family who were in holiday . We will be coming back but maybe on a more pleasurable evening wether wise .The pub has embraced the changes required for Covid safety and the menu had a good choice to suit all the family from children , to veggies, to meat lovers.A great choice of beers especially supporting local beers and breweries. 3 of the group had the pork belly and no-one could fault it . They said the cracking was perfect as it was crackly but not too firm .The pie was packed with meat and the kids loved the pizzasThe sticky toffee pudding was great but good have done with a little more sauce and the salted Caramel cake was lovely . I always worry with salted caramel items that you get that salty flavour but this had it in every bite The only issue we had had , and this could be because of the sudden change of weather and the restaurant is vey big and open with a high roof was that it was quite chilly . We all kept jumpers or coats on . We will be coming back as really enjoyed the food and overall experience

We live within 10miles of The Lion at Thurne and visit at various times over the year. If we lived within walking/biking distance, we would be classed as a regular for sure. Its easy to get side-tracked on the reviews below and I hope my review is looked at within the context of someone who has both eaten and drunk in the pub on more than one occasion.Firstly, the beer, cider spirits range the Lion at Thurne will not be beaten on unless you’re prepared to go into the City of Norwich. As a country pub I very rarely see such an amazing selection of ales anywhere else in the country and I travel extensively choosing to stay in pubs wherever possible. The fact that they are prepared to go out on a limb and stock such a variety of keg and cask beers tells you all you need to know about their passion for championing small breweries and great tasing beer. By far the best pub for variety and well looked after beers on the broads and certainly in East Norfolk. On the food we recently ate (in August) and had a sub standard meal. After bringing this to the attention of the management over an email we were very pleasantly surprised in how they dealt with our complaint. The fact that we have since been back and eaten there again hopefully will give you confidence in how seriously they take their customers feedback and the standards the aspire to. Our complaint was well looked after, and we were satisfied with the outcome. I should also say that the wood fire pizzas we had on our last visit were very good and certainly hit the spot. For me, The Lion wouldn’t be my number 1 place to eat if your looking for gastro pub grub but certainly if your looking for honest pub fare or pizza then stick to the basics off the menu. As for the appearance that’s been mentioned in some of the comments below, it’s a charming pub that’s managed to retain the original charm of the area and original building as well as taking into account careful consideration to modernisation, more so inside. If you want something that’s stereotypical and over gimmicked, then you probably need to go find yourself a Green king pub or similar chain.Enjoy the beers and the great hospitality on offer and make sure your not driving!!!!

Went here on our recent holiday to the broads. The Lion is a nice enough looking pub and is ideally situated on the River. I must say it has a great selection of beers and ales which is always nice to see. Also, great to see many smaller brewers being represented. The biggest let down though is the food and slow service. We went on a reasonably quiet day and had to continually wait for table service, the staff appear to be young and not very enthusiastic and compared to other pubs on the broads very slow. The food was pretty poor, in fact would say it was the worst we had on our holiday. Food was just chucked on the plate and was really poor standard. Finally the beer garden grassed area again is shabby, everything has that “cant be bothered feel to it” such a shame as it wouldn’t take much for this pub to be more of a positive focal point on the broads.Good for a drinkers but avoid for the kitchen and outside appearance.

We ordered the Lion burger and the pork and apple burger, followed by the salted caramel cake and everything was delicious. However, the service was absolutely hopeless. The waitresses were rude and unhelpful, and service was slow despite only a handful of tables being full. The beer menu was also severely limited. Would not eat there again.

Lovely location. Efficient service and covid aware. Easy to Moor (we arrived by boat). We were a fairly big party (10) but drinks and food orders were taken quickly and both arrived quickly. The food was decent. I think it might have felt a bit overpriced had we not been part of the eat out to help out scheme but kids menu was great and the food was tasty (most of our party had burgers of some kind).

Had lunch before we left on out boat, 25th aug, hadn’t booked so sat outside took advantage of eat in deal as in August, had 12 inch pizza and chicken strips with chips and peas and a coke for my son. Came to just over £10, also as it was started to rain they actually brought the food in take away boxes so went back to the boat to eat.

We booked a table a couple of weeks ahead as we suspected it would be busy during our planned visit to the area, especially with the Eat Out offer available. On the day it was very wet and windy due to storm Francis which made the outdoor tables less desirable, though some were braving it.We managed to get a space by being early, but the car park is quite small and inadequate for the size of the pub with some double parking or leaving their cars out in the street. Many arrive by boat. The Covid arrangements made the place look a bit untidy with barriers everywhere out front as if you were queuing up for a concert. There were some 'greenhouse' tables though a couple of the greenhouses were empty, so it wasn't clear if they were in use. There was a bit of confusion about where to sit at first, and service was a bit slow. We were given a food menu, which seems to be cut down for summer, which we had seen online, and a beer menu which was useful.A good choice of ales and real ciders and their cask 'own brew ' was nice. I was tempted to take some away but the containers were quite expensive to buy on top of the cost of the beer.Inside the pace if like some old country house with wooden panelling everywhere (I guess that's what it was originally). The tables and chairs seemed to have come from an old chapel and had hymn book racks on the back. It made it all feel a bit 'odd'.Not much choice for vegetarians but my wife opted for the meatless burger. The food was disappointing with the main thing appearing to be to pile lots of chips on your plate. I don't recall there being any peas with my fish though there were supposed to be. The burger was very plain, sparse and simple with little effort to 'dress' it.We had a desert to share but that was very expensive for what it was, with two upside down ice cream cones - thankfully it was almost half price due to the offer.I've had better and wouldn't rush back....

Called for a couple of afternoon drinks.Sat in the garden, it’s got potential but looks a bit threadbare currently. We were brought out a paper list of beers/lagers. Never heard of any of them. We asked the lady if they had any of the more well known lagers not being a big fan of the “real ale” type. No they didn’t. Tried a couple of the real ales, they were not for any of us I’m afraid. We all left pretty underwhelmed to be honest.

We ate here whilst on a boating holiday and stopped for a late lunch in the garden. Super selection of beers and ciders and we ate from the daytime menu. Food: burgers were great, chips hot and crispy. Scampi was generous and tasty. Onion rings were great! Staff: Particular call out to the great staff who were very polite, friendly and attentive. Environment: this pub has clearly invested during lockdown, track and trace by phone, immaculately clean toilets(they looked new).Would visit again without hesitation.

Decent place with good service. Order “nibbles” which on the whole were nice. Wings could do with coating before frying and then saucing as done at sister restaurant in Neatishead. Whitebait not remotely devilled and lacking in seasoning and sauce. Everything else good. Would return

just nowNice pub and managed to get seated in the garden for an early evening meal which was a result in the current lockdown climate. Unfortunately shouldn't have bothered, should have gone to the chip shop. The food was mediocre at best, inedible at worst. The "specials", though sounding great, were not that special. The Korean spiced chicken wasn't too bad, though the lukewarm rice let down what was basically an on-bone chicken cut slathered in BBQ sauce. One word....dry. The pork belly looked quality when it came out but the first cut into it was tricky given the fat content and soggyness. Sadly the crispy puffy looking crust was neither crispy nor puffy. It was pork though. Soggy pork fat. And the mash was good so well done there. Onto the pizzas. Not bad. Although the processed ham and soggy middle let them down. So how about the acclaimed Lion Burger? One word: rank. Billed as 100% aged chuck burger. I don't know how long it had been aged for but it was long enough to literally make my son cry. I thought he was being over dramatic until I tasted it myself. Chargrilled to a perfect black, it tasted nothing like a burger. It didn't even taste like food. Needless to say we sent this back and it got taken off the bill. We paid for the rest of the food, though to be honest it was out of pity for the waitress and not wanting to have too much of a pop as it was not her fault. The beer was good though. Go for the liquid lunch if you visit...the food is a huge let down and I was embarrassed to bring a group here off the back of the positive reviews I'd read. Poor show Lion, you should be ashamed.

After spending a couple of hours on the Broads, The Lion was such a welcome sight. Not only did it have a great outdoor space, with both sunny and shaded tables (thank goodness - it was a very hot day), it also had a great Ale and Cider menu (as good as I've seen and I love my real ale pubs!!). On top of that, we also shared a couple of pizza's (2 x 12" for a group of 7) - it was more than enough for snack. In truth we could easily had another 2 or 3 as they really did taste amazing - some of the best Pizza's I've tasted outside of Italy. Can't recommend enough - stop and enjoy a lazy lunch / couple of beers / the shade.

Thurle is a small waterside hamlet with riverside walks.. Popped in for a late-ish lunch and had very attentive service; including bowl of water for my dog. Wide range of choice on the menu for lunchtimes; I opted for the homemade pizza with goat's cheese, spinach and red onion. You can choose the size too.I would imagine that the Lion is absolutely rammed at busy times as suggested by their efficient queuing and booking in service.Well done to young and very competent staff.

I had heard good reviews about this pub, we are local to the area and seeing as the weather has been so lovely we decided to pop down and have a drink. It all looks a bit unfinished and messy from the outside, the garden has so much potential but is just grass and benches, it needs some flowers.! We ordered some drinks which we couldn’t fault, the staff were nice and polite and did well and what was a very busy night. The food was a huge disappointment, my husband had a Lion burger which was super pink, and lacked flavour. He had 2 bites and decided to just eat the chips. I had a piggy pizza that I had 1 slice of and left, seriously salty and the ham looked really dodgy, almost Grey in colour!! No one came and checked back on our table so we just drank our drinks and left feeling very hungry. I work in the hospitality industry and I applaud them for putting in the effort in this crazy time BUT they need to have a long hard look at the quality of food they are serving, and maybe limit covers so they can successfully deliver a good service on a smaller scale.

We started coming here more during lockdown for takeaway cider and food. The choice of drink is excellent! Plus they serve and sell bottles of their local Pell and Co gins and vodkas which are lovely. The food is amazing and they are always adding to and changing the menu so you don't get bored if you're a regular. Lovely friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, great food and drink, beautiful location by the river. Also dog friendly. Just a few pics from our various visits over the past few months!

I chose this pub because it had a more extensive menu than others in the area (many are doing reduced menus). Plus the weather was awful and they were allowing people to sit inside with stringent safety measures (one way system, hand sanitiser on arrival, distanced tables). There were a few specials and my husband chose pork loin and I had the seafood pie both came with wilted greens. Both were excellent, good portions and my pie was mighty fine packed with mussels, prawns, salmon, shrimps amongst others. We shared a passion fruit and mango cheesecake for pudding. Prices were average. It felt so good to sit in an actual pub, especially one as lovely as this with dark green walls, simple wooden seating and an authentic, pub atmosphere. It’s a free house and my husband was very happy with the choice of ales. Do book in! These pubs need your support because although they had several bookings, business is not at the same level as last year. If you want good pubs like this one here in year to come then get booking! They couldn’t have done more to address safety concerns. We’ll be back on further trips to Norfolk which is my husband’s childhood home.

Chef needs to refine his methods and present better dishes and trust his ingredients. Camembert starter didn’t contain the herbs it was supposed to and was bubbling at the table so needs to be better with timing. Pizza was overloaded with mozzarella and drowned all other ingredients which meant unbalanced cooking. Meaty pizza might as well have been a cheese and onion pizza for all I could taste. Couldn’t finish it. Really not well later that night either, which I put down to the dodgy grey (pork?) meat on the pizza. That said, service was good and the drinks were fine. A relaxed pub atmosphere, wife’s gammon was met with approval so not all bad. Chef needs to stay sharp in future.

We booked a table for my wife, myself and our 2 Briards for our one and only night out over the festive season and were given a good table out of the way so we could get the dogs settled. Lots of good beers on offer and a decent menu. We sat down at our table and ordered food and all was well until an unexpected coach party turned up and suddenly the place went from being nice to nightmare. The bar was suddenly packed with people shouting and bawling with the worst offenders deciding to sit at the table next to us. Unfortunately they decided to order food and so all way through our meal we were subjected to foul language being shouted to and fro with their mates. I am medium to severely deaf and wear hearing aids but in the end I had to remove them as the background noise was really bad and I couldn't hear a thing my wife was trying to say to me.In the end we hurriedly finished our meal and left.I know it's not the pubs fault when something like this happens and they coped with it magnificently.Anyway, other than that I can't fault the food, the beer or the staff and we will be back again when hopefully a coach party won't turn up!!

We had booked an evening meal at the Lion and arrived in good time to sample some of the beers before dinner. There's a three beer paddle option which is great for sampling some of the numerous beers available. The ladies tried some of the flavoured Gins which they thoroughly enjoyed so tried some more.We were then shown to our table in the 'no dogs allowed' section. There are two areas available if dogs are brought (they asked whether we were bringing any when booking).I went for the fish burger and the others went for the beefburger and fish and chips. The fish burger was superb with three large pieces of battered haddock and almost had as much fish as the fish and chip plates. The fries were tasty, but they always go cold too quickly and I should have asked for chips instead. I tried a few of the chips and they were excellent. We all very much enjoyed our meals and decided to try the desserts. I had chocolate cheesecake which was very rich and not what I expected. I was going to have the apple crumble, but when one of the others received it I was glad I didn't as it looked huge. He did say it was too much, but had to finish it as it was so nice.We all had a very enjoyable evening and will definitely return to sample some of the other beers, Gins and dishes. The Lion is a bit out of the way if travelling by road, but well worth the drive.
